1978 Giants call-ups

I discovered when reading through my 1978 Sporting News collection that when the Giants made their September call-ups, they included 5 guys who didn't get into any games (including 3 that never made it into any ML games). Images of them in Giants garb would be fantastic:
Joe Strain (have his 1981 baseball card image, but would prefer something better)
Greg Johnston
Mike Glinatsis
Mark Kuecker
Mike Rex

Many thanks!

1972 California Angels

I am looking for an image of Alex Johnson in the 1971 uniform lower case "a"on hat and jersey, and Andy Messersmith wearing the 1972 uniform. See attached photo. The Angels only wore this style for one season. Note the capital "A" on the hat with the lower case "a" on the jersey. Anything color would be helpful. Thanks!

Alex Johnson was traded to Cleveland in October 1971, so I'm thinking he never would have worn the '72 uniform.

Are you sure that these guys were actually called up to the major league club and brought with the team? I haven't been able to confirm them using historical newspapers or the listing of "Sharman Society" players on baseball-reference.com (the website doesn't use that term).

The attached article is from the Arizona Republic of October 27, 1978, and pertains to Mike Glinatsis. It still considers him to be an AA level player, but implies plans for him to be on the San Francisco Giants 1979 spring roster. I'm wondering if that's what you picked up. The move for these five guys onto the 40-man winter roster which would carry over into the spring.

Cusick is correct. This was a common practice in the 60s and 70s. Players would be "called up" in September--in that they were added to the 40-man roster for the winter--and instructed not to report until the spring. A good sportswriter would note the distinction...."Joe Blow was called up and instructed to report to the team in February"...but a Transaction report would just note that they'd been called-up. In these cases, they are generally not accepted as having been on the major league roster unless they appeared in a game or were listed as active in a game program.

That said, there could still be images of them in team garb if they remained on the 40-man roster into Spring Training the following year.

Are you referring to the files linked in my signature? If so (and presuming you're using a Windows machine), right click on the file and select "Extract Files." Then just specify the folder where you want the images to land.

You've missed the date on this. It's reported in the October 21, 1978 edition of The Sporting News and refers to these players being added to the San Francisco roster after the 1978 season ended (see screen grab of the page from SABR's TSN archive below). Given the lag between the "close" of each TSN issue and the publication date, these moves were probably made around October 6 or 7. The Giants' regular season ended on October 1. None of these five players were on the Giants' active roster during 1978, sorry.
