question about replay league setup
I just downloaded the game and want to set up a replay league beginning in 1993. When I get to step 4 in the setup, it asks about player development and recommends I use "disable player development"
What are the pros and cons of that versus the other two options which are recalculating rating before each season using stats or using talent ratings and the OOTP game engine? This is just a league I am setting up for single-player play. I am going to try to take over the Pirates when their losing skid began and steer them in a different direction. |

If you turn on the development engine, then you're not doing a replay league. That means that player ratings may begin to fluctuate or change during the season and from year-to-year based on OOTP's own developmental and aging algorithms. Your game will take on a life of its own and because more fictional in this regard.
You can combine the development engine with recalculating ratings for each year, but that still means you could see player ratings change during the season. For the kind of project you're doing, I highly recommend using the 3-year recalc, turning off scouting and coaches, turning off development, and sticking to the core aspects of the game engine. If you want to take a more strictly 'replay' approach with player ratings based only on each real life season, then you can use 1-year recalc instead. But keep in mind that 1-year recalc means that some players will suddenly have major changes in things like pitcher endurance, for example, because the pitcher was converted from starter to the bullpen from one year to the next in real life. Field players changing roles or their starting/bench responsibilities from year to year in real life can also have a huge impact. I do a lot of the sorts of leagues that you're planning, so feel free to send me a private message if you have other questions or wants some good recommendations for historical play. Here are my official recommended settings for historical games. These are based entirely on my personal preferences with a view toward keeping the game simple and fairly true to real life while also leaving some opportunities for deviation and variation from reality.
Global Setup Use Complete Scouting System: UNCHECKED Use Complete Coaching System: UNCHECKED Enable Drug Suspensions: UNCHECKED for leagues before 2000's Player Personalities: UNCHECKED Injury Frequency: NORMAL or LOW Delayed Injury Diagnosis: NEVER Ratings/Potential/Other Ratings Scale: 1-10 Show Potential < Actual: YES Overall Based On All Players, Not Positions: CHECKED (usually) Enable Storylines: UNCHECKED Save Box Scores and Logs: ALL MAJOR LEAGUES (for all settings) Player & Picture Options Disable Player Development: CHECKED Show & Use Player Personality Ratings: UNCHECKED Show & Use Player Morale System: UNCHECKED AI Options Ratings Weight: 40 Current Year Stats Weight: 40 Previous Year Stats Weight: 15 2 Years Ago Stats Weight: 5 AI Trading Frequency: LOW Trading Difficulty: VERY HARD or HARD League Setup - Names and Affiliations Award Names Setup: CHANGE TO REAL LIFE AWARDS WHERE POSSIBLE League Setup - Rules Secondary (40-Man) Roster Size: 40 Reserve Roster Size (if not using minors): 15 (discourages player hording) Waiver Period Length: 3 DAYS DFA Period Length: 10 DAYS Disable Right to Refuse Minor League Assignment: CHECKED FOR MOST YEARS Rule 5 Draft: CHECKED Allow Trading of Recently Drafted Players: CHECKED 10/5 Rule: UNCHECKED Allow Draft Pick Trading: UNCHECKED Amateur Draft Date: December 15 Amateur Draft Number of Rounds: 4 Amateur Draft Pool Reveal Date: 15 DAYS BEFORE DRAFT Enable Advanced Draftee Signing: UNCHECKED League Setup - Financials Enable Reserve Clause Era Rules: CHECKED FOR SEASONS BEFORE 1976 Draft Pick Compensation for Lost FA's: UNCHECKED National Media Contract Fixed? YES, SAME FOR EVERY TEAM Team Owner Controls Budget? NO, ENTIRE REVENUE AVAILABLE Revenue Sharing: NO (NOTE: I also tend to adjust market sizes so they match real life. OOTP bases initial market sizes on the size of the team's payroll based on player ratings.) League Setup - Options Allow Incomplete Minor League Rosters (Ghost Players): CHECKED (if using minors) (NOTE: I do not use fictional players in any historical leagues. Also, I rarely use minors for historical leagues unless ) HOF Requirements: ERA 3.50, SAVES 250 or 300 Schedule Spring Training: UNCHECKED Playoff Options: ENTER REAL LIFE PLAYOFF ROUND NAMES League Setup - Historical Retire Players According To History: CHECKED Ratings Recalculation Base: 3 YEARS Double Weight of Current Year Stats: CHECKED Base Potential Ratings On: REMAINING YEARS OF CAREER League Setup - Strategy Typical Starting Rotation Size: 5 MAN ROTATION (NOTE: The 5-man rotation is accurate for almost the entire history of baseball dating back to the end of the deadball era. Teams have almost always used 5 starters, but sometimes the 5th starter only pitched about half the time because the top two would often be used on short rest for important games.) Starting Rotation Mode: STRICT ROTATION, OCCASIONALLY START HIGHEST RESTED Last edited by Charlie Hough; 12-07-2012 at 05:49 PM. |
