No. Although the first few years were a bit more random so I can't remember when I instituted this process and range. But hey, close enough.

But for statistical modifiers I decided to pick a 20-year major league span (I settled on 1972-1991) and just prior to each WPK season (day before Opening Day) I roll a 20-sided die which dictates which MLB season to base statistical modifiers upon.
So I got curious about just when I did switch to the method I currently use for statistical modifiers. And the answer I found in this thread was, well, I don't know.
I didn't find mention of it in any detail until a post from 04/05/2019 (the relevant section quoted above.)
Going back through (quickly) the entire thread, starting in OOTP 19, it is clear that 1965-1967 just used the statistical modifiers for those MLB seasons. And then in 1968 I intended to use 1973 (but that might have just been an attempt to jump past the pitching dominated years) but messed it up and ended up with the Year of the Pitcher anyway. I find a quick note saying that 1969 was using 1986 modifiers (just like 1975 is) but after that no more indicators until the quote above.
Guess I should have kept track of all of this better, but I also sort of like the mystery and pretending as much as possible that the WPK is a parallel baseball universe with no knowledge of the MLB we know and love.

Bird,

I must have been mistaken then. I could have sworn you had stated 70-89 but it's not that big of a deal, 72-91 is just as good. Whatever works for you!

Berserkers sign McNeil

The future Hall-of-Fame reliever, Jamel McNeil, who is also considered one of the most hated men in the WPK, was signed to a 1-year deal by the Boston Berserkers which was announced on Opening Day.

Boston is generally considered the favorite to win the SJL this season and McNeil certainly strengthens their bullpen. But it will be interesting to see if the always contentious superstar creates dissension in the clubhouse and if so whether that will negatively impact the Berserkers' pennant hopes.

Travis Johnson collects 2000th career hit!

Los Angeles Spinners veteran superstar left fielder Travis Johnson is off to a terrific start in the first week of the 1975 season and it took him no time to reach a career milestone that only two other players in WPK history have: 2000 hits.

With Johnson's help the Spinners have gotten off to a good start, having won five of their first six games this season.

Johnson joins Felix Lopez (2068) and Josh Jenkins (2020) in the 2000 hit club.

Week 1- April 14-19, 1975

Brewers record: 3-3 (week and season).

April 14-16, at Oklahoma City: 1-5, 4-5, 8-6.
The Brewers get off to a slow start in Oklahoma City as Cheol-han Lee has a tough first start, allowing 5 runs on 11 hits over 6 innings to drop game 1. Catcher Kirk Patnode and outfielder Ryan Rodgers each went 2 for 4 in the loss.
Sadahige Kawasaki was pitching pretty well in game 2 and the Brewers held a narrow lead but his manager kept him in one batter too long and paid the price when Kawasaki allowed a 2-run HR off the bat of left-handed hitter Kevin Reed. Bobby Erbakan was 2 for 4 in the loss.
Steve Green was then brilliant in his first start of 1975, lasting 7 innings, giving up just 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 6 and walking one. The bullpen tried to give his win away but in the end Jaden Francis came in and got the final 2 outs for his first save of 1975. Andrew Kennedy went 4 for 5, hit his first double of the season and drove in 2 runs. Joe McPhillips was 2 for 4, scoring 2 runs, driving in 2 and hitting his 1st double. And Green himself reached base 3 times (2 walks and a single) and scored 3 times.

April 17-19, versus San Francisco: 7-12, 10-1, 14-9.

The Brewers lose their home opener after jumping off to a 5-0 lead after 1 inning. Erik Sloan was not sharp, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits in 6 innings pitched. And the bullpen continues their pretty horrible start. John Flores was good though, going 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, and hitting the first HR of the season for the Brewers.
With the team looking a bit flat early on, Joe McPhillips (with some help from Harry Lyerly) took the club on his shoulders and led them to their first easy victory of 1975. All the reigning MGL MVP did was go 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored, 6 RBI, and hit for the cycle! Lyerly, meanwhile, lasted 8 innings, giving up the 1 run on just 5 hits while striking out 5 and walking 5. Chad Brown went 3 for 5 and scored 3 runs in the easy victory.
The Brewers held a 9-2 lead in the final game of the series going into the 6th inning but then the Velocity plated 5 runs in the 6th off starter Matt Helm and reliever Ben Flynn. Fortunately the Brewers offense, led once again by Joe McPhillips (.385/.448/.808) was able to pile up enough runs to overcome the poor pitching. McPhillips hit his 3rd double and 2 HR of 1975 and threw out a runner at 3rd base for his 2nd assist of the year. And while Matt Helm did not pitch very well, he did contribute his 1st HR of 1975 (5th of his career.)

Notes from around the league: The L.A. Spinners jump off to the best start in the MGL at 5-1 while the Milwaukee Cadets also get off to a 5-1 start to lead the SJL.

It is the 12th cycle in WPK history and the second by a Brewer. (Mike Foster accomplished the feat during the 1972 season.)

Spencer Wilson SJL Player of the Week

Former Brewer backup catcher Spencer Wilson is off to a great start in the 1975 season and was named the SJL Player of the Week for the first week of the season.

Wilson had a really solid 1974 as his 4.2 WAR was a bit better than the 3.8 his Denver counterpart Zacarias Martell accounted for.

Setback for lefty Hector Hard

The Brewers will be without the services of left-handed starter Hector Hard a bit longer than earlier expected. Hard is battling with biceps tendinitis and it is now believed that he will need at least 2 more weeks of recovery time before he is ready to return from the IL.

Schardein shuts down El Paso Dawgs

It's always nice to see one of the old warriors of the WPK capture a bit of their past glory, however briefly.
Name: Capture 347.PNG
Views: 198

Jaime Schardein, two-time Pitcher of the Year award winner and the author of the first perfect game in WPK history, has had two fine starts in 1975 for his new team, the Milwaukee Cadets, and in his most recent he got the complete game shutout, allowing just 3 hits to the El Paso Dawgs, while striking out 3 and walking none. At age 39, Schardein's glory days are well behind him but occasionally he will hurl a gem to let everyone know he is still the great Jaime Schardein.

McNally tosses 1-hitter

Looks like last year's MGL Pitcher of the Year and pitching Triple Crown winner, Aaron McNally, is picking right up where he left off. He is off to a 3-0 start with a 1.13 ERA and his most recent victory was a 1-hitter over the Oklahoma City Diamond Kings.

Week 2- April 20-26, 1975

Brewers record: 3-2 (week), 6-5, 4th place, 2 1/2 gb (season).

April 20-22, at Portland: 7-4, 8-1, ppd (rain).

Cheol-han Lee was a bit better in his second start, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits while working 8 2/3rds innings. He improves to 1-1, 5.52. Chad Brown was 2 for 4 and Joe McPhillips hit his 4th double of the season and drove in a pair of runs, though that was his only hit.
In the second game, Sadahige Kawasaki showed why he was so sought after in the off-season. He hurled the complete game victory, giving up just a single run on 8 hits (1 HR), while striking out 6 and walking 1. He improves to 1-1, 2.16. Andrew Kennedy went 2 for 4 but the big offensive production came from the 7th and 8th slots in the lineup as Jonathan Koch went 2 for 5 and Zacarias Martell was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, and hit his 1st HR of the season.
The final game of the series was rained out and will have to be made up later in the season.

April 23-25, versus Charlotte: 3-9, 3-5, 8-4.

The Brewers come home to face the Sting and in game 1 get humiliated by former Brewer Justin Peacock, who gets the complete game victory. Steve Green, who pitched so great in his first start, was horrible in this one. He gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in 6 IP. He drops to 1-1, 4.85. Rodrigo "RodRod" Rodriguez was 2 for 5 in the game and hit 2 doubles, his first 2 of the season.
In game 2 it was Harry Lyerly's turn to follow a great first start with a weak second start. Lyerly gave up 5 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings and drops to 1-1, 3.60. Andrew Kennedy, one of the few hot hitters for the Brewers in the early going, was 2 for 4 in the loss.
The Brewers largely used the long ball to win the final game of the series. John Flores hit his 2nd of 1975, Bobby Erbakan and Jordan Stephens each hit their 1st. Cheol-han Lee pitched well enough to get the victory (2-1, 4.98)- he gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings. The Brewers bullpen continues its early season struggles as Jordan Stephens gives up a run in his inning and two thirds and sports a 9.00 ERA, which is sadly better than 3 of his bullpen mates (Jaden Francis, Liann-wei Hua, and Jeremy Walker). But he more than made up for it with his 2-out, 3-run HR.

The Brewers are tied for 7th in the league in runs allowed. Their starting rotation is 6th in ERA (4.31) while the bullpen is dead last in the same category (8.24). While the offense has been uneven, we are still 2nd in runs scored and batting average (.294).
Individually, Eric Marino is the only reliever who hasn't been hit hard yet and Sadahige Kawasaki the only starter with an ERA below 3.50. Ryan Rodgers (.423/.595/.462) and Andrew Kennedy (.438/.438/.469) are hot at the plate, with Kennedy currently working on 12-game hitting streak. Zacarias Martell (.333/.385/.500) is off to another good start. Joe McPhillips has been inconsistent, swinging between amazingly good and pretty poor. But many Brewers are off to very poor starts, including Bobby Erbakan, Mike Foster, and Jonathan Koch. Considering the Brewers have faced quite a few left-handed starters thus far and some of their most important right-handed hitters are in a bit of a deep freeze, it isn't a surprise the team is under-performing.

Notes from around the league: The Brooklyn Aces are off to a 9-3 start and lead the MGL. The surprising Detroit Falcons are tied with the L.A. Spinners at 8-4. In the SJL, Milwaukee still leads with a 9-3 record. Jacksonville and Columbus are tied at 8-4. Philadelphia's veteran right fielder Nate Bennett is off to another great start, leading the SJL in batting average (.442) and RBI (14).

April's Top Pitchers

Matt Armstrong of the Milwaukee Cadets as named the SJL's Pitcher of the Month for April of 1975. Armstrong was the second player taken overall in the 1965 draft but has never reached his full potential, partly due to a propensity to suffer injuries but some also think due to his very poor attitude. Many around the league consider him one of the most disruptive clubhouse influences in the game. But at least for the month of April he was the best in the SJL.

April's Top Batters

A pair of great WPK veterans took the honors in their respective leagues as the Batters of the Month of April 1975.

Nate Bennett of the Philadelphia Mud Hens is the greatest power hitter of his generation and although he has only hit 2 homers yet this season he is off to a great start at the plate and earned the Batter of the Month honor in the SJL.

And Los Angeles' great left fielder Travis Johnson just keeps chugging along at age 36, on his way to the Hall of Fame, and hustled his way to the April MGL Batter of the Month honors.

Injuries befall two MGL key players

The Los Angeles Spinners, off to an 11-7 start in 1975, lost a key player today when catcher Greg Foster, one of the better hitters at his position in the WPK and the Gold Glove winner in the MGL the past two seasons, will miss at least 3 weeks with a fractured rib.

And the Brewers see their star center fielder, the reigning MGL MVP, Joe McPhillips suffer a knee sprain making a terrific diving catch in yesterday's game against the Phoenix Speed Devils. McPhillips was initially listed Day-to-Day but with the Brewers training staff estimating that it will take a least a month for him to be fully recovered, the front office decided not to take a risk of this becoming a more serious injury and he was put on the 10-day IL.

To complicate things for the Brewers, they also saw Ryan Rodgers go down with an injury a few days before and are still waiting word on a final diagnosis and will likely need to put him on the IL soon too. For now, Zach Cook has been brought up to help out in center field. (Hector Hard, meanwhile, is on his way to AAA Chester for a rehab stint, having just come off the IL.) Depending upon what happens with Rodgers, it is very possible that the Brewers top prospect, Jorge Gonzalez, will get his first crack at the big league club soon. Gonzalez (.398/.436/.641) is off to a tremendous start this year at AAA Chester, but questions remain concerning his temperament and work ethic (Selfish player.)

Rodgers out with herniated disc, possibly up to a month

Over the course of his career, Ryan Rodgers has been an iron man, never having suffered an injury that required he be put on the IL until 1972 (and that was a freak injury in which he hurt his elbow while arm wrestling in a bar.)
But he is 36-years old and I guess some aches and pains are going to start to manifest themselves late in a career.

Unfortunately for the Brewers Rodgers injury comes at the same time that they are without the services of fellow super star outfielder Joe McPhillips.

I guess this is where it is good that outfield is an area of relative strength for the Brewers. It appears that we will get to see what the kids can do: Zach Cook is already on the team and had a nice first game (more soon) and it appears Jorge Gonzalez may be called up next.
In addition, right fielder Josh Schaefer is all of sudden red hot at the plate and will certainly be getting more AB's in the absence of Rodgers and McPhillips.

Week 3- April 27-May 3, 1975

Brewers record: 6-1 (week), 12-6, 2nd place, 1/2 gb (season)

Now this is more like it!

April 27-29, at Baltimore: 1-6, 6-0, 11-0.

The Brewers uneven start continued in the first game in Baltimore as the offense could only manage 3 hits off Sako Zakian (3rd pick overall in the 1972 draft) and Erik Sloan (0-1, 6.94) gave up 6 runs on 10 hits in his 5 2/3rds innings pitched.
And then in game 2 the Brewers got the kind of start from Sadahige Kawasaki that they were envisioning when they signed him this off-season. Kawasaki gave the beleaguered bullpen a break as he got the complete game shutout, allowing 6 hits, striking out 3 and walking just 1. He improves to 2-1, 1.40. He got some help from Joe McPhillips (.273/.322/.582), who went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and hit his 6th double and 3rd HR of the season. And Andrew Kennedy (.447/.462/.500) remains hot with a 3 for 4 game and hit his 2nd double.
And then the Brewers kept it going with another complete game victory (Matt Helm, 2-0, 3.21) and a 5-hit game by Josh Schaeffer (.379/.471/.448). With Schaeffer's performance, Andrew Kennedy's 4 for 5 day was nearly lost in the shuffle. Bobby Erbakan is not off to a great start (.233/.300/.372), but he did hit his 3rd HR of the season in this one.

April 30-May 2, at Phoenix: 5-2, 6-4, 7-2.
The starting rotation continues its resurgence as Steve Green works 8 1/3rd in game 1, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. He improves to 2-1, 3.80. Oscar Vargas got a start at shortstop and went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI on his 6th inning 3-run HR. On the less happy side, Ryan Rodgers had to leave the game with an injury suffered in a base-path collision.
More of the same in game 2, as Cheol-han Lee (3-1, 3.99) gave up just 3 runs- 1 earned- on 6 hits in 7 2/3rd innings. John Flores (.367/.355/.700), who should be getting a lot more playing time with injuries in the Brewers outfield, went 3 for 5, hitting his 2nd double and 1st triple of 1975.
And in the final game of the series, Erik Sloan finally has his first good start of 1975, going the distance for his 1st win, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits. Joe McPhillips was lost to injury in this game, but the guy who came in to replace him in center field, John Flores, ended up hitting a Grand Slam HR in his first plate appearance. It was Flores 3rd HR of the season.

May 3rd, versus Brooklyn: 9-2.
In the first of three in Denver against the first place Aces, Harry Lyerly keeps things going for the rotation and Josh Schaeffer shines again at the plate. Lyerly (2-1, 3.27) lasted 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on just 4 hits. Schaeffer (.405/.490/.595) was 4 for 4 at the plate, hitting 3rd double of the season and his 1st HR and driving in 4 runs. Bobby Erbakan (.263/.313/.439) went 2 for 5, hitting his 3rd HR and driving in 2 runs.

So, what happened this week? First of all, the starting pitching, which was horrible in the first few weeks of the season, was fantastic this week. The bullpen was pretty good but mostly very little used. And then a few hitters got red-hot- particularly Josh Schaeffer, Andrew Kennedy (remained hot), and John Flores.

Notes from around the league: The Columbus Whalers are en fuego, having now won 12 games in a row, and lead the SJL with a 15-4 record. The Boston Berserkers and Jacksonville Wolf Pack are tied for second place with 12-7 records.
Brooklyn barely leads the Brewers in the MGL now with 13-6 mark. Andrew Kennedy leads the MGL in batting average at .439.

May 5th, 1975: McNally vs. Kawasaki

As it turns out, the second game of the three game series in Denver between the two top contenders for the MGL crown- the Brooklyn Aces and the Denver Brewers- features a match-up between the reigning MGL Pitcher of the Year, Aaron McNally, and the hottest new pitching import, Sadahige Kawasaki.

When facing McNally you have to assume that you will need to hold the Aces to as few runs as possible as it is highly unlikely McNally will allow even an offense as great as the Brewers to cross the plate too many times.

In their first match-up, of what will likely be many, Kawasaki was unable to do that.
He gave up 7 runs in the first two innings combined and although Sadahige settled down quite a bit after that the damage was done and McNally cruised to his 5th win of the season. The only run McNally would give up before the 9th inning, when he was clearly gassed but insisted his manager leave him on the mound, was a first inning lead-off homer off the bat of the red-hot Josh Schaeffer.

Week 4- May 4-10, 1975

Brewers record: 2-4 (week), 14-10, 4th place, 1 1/2 gb (season)

And then things started to slip again.

May 4-5, versus Brooklyn: 3-9,4-2.
The first game has already been reported on, in which we were bested by the best: Aaron McNally.
In the final game of the series the Brewers got a solid start from Steve Green (3-1, 3.62)- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R- and probably the best game from the bullpen this season as three relievers- Ben Flynn, Liann-wei Hua, and Jaden Francis combine to hold the Aces hitless and scoreless for the final 2 innings. Zacarias Martell (.375/.444/.542), once again having a great start to a season, went 3 for 4 in this one, driving in 2 runs, hitting his 2nd double and 2nd HR of the season.

May 6-8, at Detroit: 1-3, 5-3, 2-4.
The Brewers head to Detroit and drop 2 of 3 against the surprising Falcons.
The recent trend of good performances from the starting rotation continues, though, as in game 1 Matt Helm (2-1, 3.00) allows just 2 runs on 4 hits over 7 innings. Andrew Kennedy (.420/.437/.478) went 2 for 4 and hit his 4th double in the loss.
Cheol-han Lee got the win in the middle game of the series to improve to 4-1 with a 3.47 ERA. He gave up just a single run on 5 hits over 7 innings. Josh Schaeffer (.404/.493/.719) continues to be the Brewers MVP in the early going and he went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and hit his 4th double and 4th HR. Oscar Vargas contributed with his 2nd HR of the season while playing superlative defense at shortstop. And Bobby Erbakan (.284/.321/.432) showed some signs of coming out of his early season slump when he went 3 for 5 with his 2nd double.
Erik Sloan deserved a win in the third game, as he struck out 8 batters while walking just 1 and giving up 1 run on 5 hits over 7 innings. But he didn't get the run support and the bullpen blew the lead, with Eric Marino (0-1, 8.10) giving up 3 runs in 1 inning pitched to take the loss. John Flores (.390/.409/.805) did his part, going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and hitting his 4th HR of the season.

May 10, versus L.A.: 2-5.
In the final game of the week, the first of 3 against the red-hot L.A. Spinners at Centennial Stadium, the strong starting pitching continued as Harry Lyerly (2-1, 3.10) allowed just 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 9 batters and walking 2 over 7 innings of work, but so did the poor bullpen work Liann-wei Hua and Ben Flynn combined to allow the Spinners to break a 2-2 tie with 3 runs in the 9th inning. Josh Schaeffer went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI, 1 walk, and hit his team-leading 5th HR in the loss.

Brewers trends at this stage of the season: The starting rotation is looking quite solid since the disastrous first week of the season and surprisingly Harry Lyerly leads the team in ERA at 3.10. The bullpen continues to be in a shambles (6.18 combined ERA). Several left-handed hitters are off to great starts: Josh Schaeffer, who leads the MGL in batting WAR with 1.5, Andrew Kennedy, who leads in batting average at .416, and Zacarias Martell, who is 4th on the team among position players in WAR at 0.7 due to both his hot bat and his good work behind the plate. One right-handed hitter is also doing well- John Flores, who is tied with Andrew Kennedy for 2nd in WAR at 0.8 in spite of playing far less than the other top hitters on the team. But several key right-handed hitters are struggling: Bobby Erbakan (.268/.303/.402, 0.2 WAR), Jonathan Koch (.253/.298/.291, 0.1 WAR), Mike Foster (.227/.306/.273, 0.0 WAR). And switch-hitter Chad Brown, who is generally best from the right side of the plate, is off to another abysmal start (.226/.261/.250, -0.3 WAR). To make matters worse, there is a perception on the scouting staff that Brown has lost a step and his normally very fine range at short has been compromised. When you add to that his propensity to make errors (he has made 8 in 19 starts this year), there is much talk about the Brewers needing to make a change at this position.
And for awhile the answer was to play Oscar Vargas more. Vargas himself is not a very good contact hitter, but he has some pop, can draw a walk (unlike Brown) and remains a superior defensive infielder at three positions.
And that was all fine and good until Oscar suffered a concussion on a hit by pitch in the final game of the Detroit series. He is expected to be out 6 weeks. Joe Willemse was recalled to the big club.

Notes from around the league: Columbus remains hot and is off to a tremendous 20-5 start to lead the SJL. The Boston Berserkers have moved into second place, 4 games behind, at 16-9. In the MGL, the Brooklyn Aces and L.A. Spinners are now tied for 1st with 16-9 records. Detroit and Denver are tied at 14-10, 1 1/2 off the pace.
