WBL - Grand Championship League

The following preview was written by the WBL team representative.

The WBL has been running for almost a year now in real time and we are headed into our 4th season. The WBL started with a World Cup style feel to it with 30 teams but they are divided out into 6 groups of 5 teams. The top 2 teams in each group move on to the playoffs where they have a standard playoffs. The league's teams have countries as their team names along with the national teams nickname for the teams.

Opening Statement

As a GM I am always “pitching first”. You can see this with the staff I have here. With a short season and a long playoff system, I picked 3 guys that could essentially be a dominant 3-man rotation and 2 guys that could win druing the regular season.

With the bullpen we have, we will likely put Chad Morgan and Zach Campbell on low pitch counts and let the pen handle the load at the end of the game. On offense, we didn’t go for raw power, but rather chose high average and OBP guys. We are looking at a more station to station style offense than a big fly club, but I believe we should be one of the better offenses out there. But for this team to win, we really just need the offense to be in the top half of the league, as the pitching should be near the top

5 Keys to Winning:

Starting Rotation. Given the budget constraints, we believe these are the 5 best pitchers a team could put together. The big 3 of Roy, Price & Hall all had WAR of 6.5 or better. Campbell and Morgan are solid back end guys for the 62 game grind

Bullpen. This bullpen is built to shut it down. The middle relievers are solid, though unspectacular, but Ramos and Hanson would be closers on most teams. Ramos has an incredible 6.9 K/BB ratio, and Hanson is nearly as good at 6.2. Even as good as they are, Wright had an astonishing 8.2 K/BB ratio, 35 saves, and a WHIP below 0.85.

The top 3 of the order. Mike Bergeron leads off and has been a solid leadoff hitter in each of the last 3 season, hitting no less than .302 with 199 or more hits each of those years. Warren Bascombe is the perfect number 2 hitter. His last 2 years have seen an average OBP over .400 and he struck out just 47 times last year. He always puts the ball in play and will do a great job moving Bergeron over. Batting 3rd is Smith and there isn’t much that needs to be said. 25+ HR power with the ability for a .400 OBP season and a strong glove in CF, the guy is just amazing Félix Serrano.

Serrano is not your typical cleanup hitter. He hasn’t even hit 15 HR in the last 4 years, but he is a phenominal hitter (200+ hits in the last 3 seasons) and is a very difficult out (less than 40 K’s a year on average). Serrano really can keep doing what he has been doing to be successful, though a HUGE bonus would be to see him crack the 20 HR plane

The defense. This team is not built around defense so they will all need to raise their game some to help out this great pitching staff. That said, the bench is filled with defensive replacements so that when the offense gets early leads, the defense is there to shut it down at the end
