Really? A Marlin is a giant fish with a sword for a nose. That's badass.

Reds were originally Red Stockings and got shortened to Reds. Red Sox honored that. I don't know when SOX become an actual word, but Sox of course shortened stockings and White honored the original name of the Cubs. I am biased of course being a White Sox fan.
What else would you have the Houston club be named?
Stupid sports names to me:
Redskins
LA Lakers
STL Cardinals - state bird of MO is a Eastern Bluebird, State bird of IL is the Cardinal.
LA Dodgers
Utah Jazz
Rays should be Sting Rays
KC Royals - dont hate the name just there are better names for KC

thought this was interesting:
The temporary decision by the Boston National Leaguers to drop the color red from their uniforms led to a history-making decision:
"Red Stockings had been part of all Boston National League teams up to 1907, but Fred Tenney, manager in that year, told Peter F. Kelley, the Boston Journal's baseball writer, he would abandon the red stockings tradition in favor of white stockings, because of the danger that colored stockings might cause leg injuries to become infected. Kelley wrote a story condemning Tenney for parting with the Boston National League club's tradition. The next day, John Irving Taylor, Boston American League club president, told the Boston Journal writer, 'Here's a scoop for you. I am going to grab the name Red Sox, and the Boston American League club will wear red stockings." (BBG)

There's two different levels of "silly" names, in my opinion - those that don't make sense for the city/state (Lakers, Jazz, Dodgers), and those that are simply silly concepts (Red/White Sox, Phillies, and Dodgers, actually). The former usually arises from relocation, and though it would have made sense to re-name the team upon relocating, I don't mind them all that much. The latter are usually old, traditional names that the teams can't bring themselves to part with. I also don't mind those. Silly names don't bother me, but I can at least admit that they're silly.

EDIT: The Tampa Bay Sting Rays doesn't sound right to me. I like the name "Rays," but I think they need to re-incorporate the stingray back into their design - along with the current sunburst. They could keep both.

EDIT2: The Redskins really need to go. In the same vein, the Blackhawks should keep their name but change their logo.

I can not disagree with that and yes i would love to see both Sox names changed but to what? My choice for Chicago would be Hitmen, honoring the Sox and our mafia past. Boston Strong is the 1st name that comes to mind. Fightin' Irish is a name i use in my ABF so I am partial to that. We can not get the Redskins to change their name which some deem offensive, theres no way the Sox will change their names.

Eesh, let's not be quick on the trigger with the Boston Strong stuff. Like I said, I'm fine with the Red Sox, even if it is silly.

I like the Chihuahua name. It's all a matter of opinion. El Paso is a good baseball town too. I saw Pedro Martinez pitch in a minor league game there way back when.

Charlotte has changed their logo:

As have the Arkansas Travelers:

Arkansas Travelers Release New Identity, All-Star Game Logo |

It's not pining, it's passed on. It has ceased to be. It's an ex-space program!

Back on topic about the name given to the El Paso team:

You guys DO realize, don't you, that the name of the Mexican state just across the border from El Paso is "Chihuahua"? So perhaps that "silly" name doesn't ring quite so silly in Spanish and in Mexico. Maybe there's method in their madness.
