$0 money for extensions...not always the case?

we have a team in our league that has a terrific young player when is about to become a free agent (5.120 MLS as of now, but will go over 6.000 by season's end).

his current team is extremely far in the hole financially. $0 for free agents, and $0 for extending current players. seriously - the team is about 5 times the normal budget in the red right now.

the GM of the team tells me that he was able to submit an extension request from the player.

we use the 'No, entire revenue available' options under the financials. in using this, it has ALWAYS been a fact that $0 is $0. if there is no money, then THERE IS NO MONEY. the option to submit has never in 16 season been available under these constraints.

so what gives?? will an owner occasionally just forget about the math and allow it in the case of a top player?

projected budget: $2,640,000
cash +/-: ($3,808,719)
projected payroll: $3,248,075
proj. misc. exp. $855,800

so, the projected payroll is already over a half million above the budget, then they are four million in the red, and then there is another million bucks almost in further expenses...that is over five million below the $0 line for money for extensions. how can he make an offer of an extension?!

good thinking.

i asked him if he logged in as the commish, and was told 'no'. i don't want to log in as him and mess with attempting to make an offer because i don't want to mess things up with his offer, etc.

Use a copy of the league. Nothing will get messed.

My best guess.

As he's still under the free agent threshold for service time, the projected payroll is still seeing him as an arbitration eligible player for the upcoming season and is including his projected arbitration reward into the future budget calculations.

When attempting to extend a player in this situation you're able to offer up to that projected arbitration reward in the first season of the extension as it won't increase that projected payroll figure.

This. I have had this happen many times as well.
