Historical League Replay

The National Hockey League is coming into it's 15th Season when the NHL Board of Governors thought something had to change. Now leading up to the off-season, new players would be drafted into the league rather than just signed by teams. This would give teams who are not doing so well in the standings a chance to get better by next year. All stats leading up to this season were wiped from the record books as this is the "New" NHL. The team owners also agreed to have all the players be put into an Inaugural Draft. 401 players will be put into the draft. Now, I Shawn Howard, was hired as GM of the Montreal Canadiens. Leo Dundurand moved on to bigger and greater things in the NHL Head Office.

The Inaugural draft order was released today. Montreal Canadiens will pick 1st followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, New York Americans, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Maroons, Detroit Falcons and finally the New York Rangers. It is a snake draft so it will go in reverse order from there.

GM Shawn Howard was very excited to realize he would be awarded the 1st ever draft pick in League history. "I never dreamed I would be able to choose from such stars today. Now I have to plan my draft because as great it is to have the 1st pick I will not pick again until 16."

1st Overall - Montreal Canadiens: Center Howie Mornez

GM Shawn Howard could not pass up to bring back beloved fan favourite Howie Mornez. So far in his NHL career he has 207 goals and 85 assists for 292 points in 297 career games. He was the only player we had on our radar for Number 1.

2nd Overall - Toronto Maple Leafs: Defenseman Eddie Shore

Toronto Maple Leafs management went and picked top defenseman Eddie Shore with their pick. He will join Toronto after a 5 year career with the Boston Bruins. In 208 games with Boston, he scored 62 goals and assisted on 54 goals for 106 career points.

3rd Overall - Boston Bruins: Right Winger Charlie Conacher

Boston just lost the best defenseman in the league to Toronto so what do they do? They select rising star Charlie Conacher from the Maple Leafs. In his 2 years he played in 75 games scoring 51 goals and assisting on 21 for 72 points.

4th Overall - New York Americans: Left Wing Hector "Toe" Blake

The New York Americans are going to build around youngster Toe Blake. He has yet to play a game in the NHL so this a quite the gamble.

5th Overall - Chicago Blackhawks: Defenseman King Clancy

Chicago went with 10 year NHL veteran King Clancy. He had played 9 years with Ottawa before leaving for greener pastures with Toronto. In his 10 years he played 350 games scoring 91 and assisting on 83 for 174 points.

6th Overall - Montreal Maroons: Center Bill Cowley

Montreal surprised a few teams by selecting the young Bill Cowley. He has yet to play a game in the NHL so we will see if this moves turns out for the team.

7th Overall - Detroit Falcons: C Frank Boucher

Detroit came up to the podium to select 6 year vet Frank Boucher. He had a very solid career up to this point but is 30 years old so how many good years does he have left? In 242 games, he scored 92 goals and assisted on 108 for 200 career points.

8th Overall - New York Rangers: C Auriel Joliat

With the last pick in the 1st round, Rangers selected Joliat to be their number 1 center. He has played a great career so far but just reached the age in which players might start to decline. He is 30. In his 9 year career he has put up 160 goals and assisted on 88 assists for 248 points in 324 games.

The Montreal Canadiens opened up the pre-season with a home and home series against the Boston Bruins. The 1st game was held in Boston with the return game being played in Montreal.

Montreal @ Boston

Montreal went to Boston Garden with hopes of getting at least a draw. They did not expect to win and not to win big like they did. Montreal won 6-3 in the pre-season opener. I was very proud of my team going into the hostile territory and coming way with a win. Scoring Summary:

1st - (BOS) Hooley Smith - Charlie Conacher, Harvey Rockburn
1st - (MTL) Cecil Dillion - Hec Kilrea
2nd - (BOS) Larry Aurie - Glen Byrdson, Marty Burke
2nd - (MTL) Red Horner - Cecil Dillion, Howie Morenz
2nd - (MTL) Hec Kilrea - John Gallagher, Howie Morenz
3rd - (BOS) Hooley Smith - Baldy Northcott, Glenn Byrdson
3rd - (MTL) Hec Kilrea - Slyvio Mantha, Howie Morenz
3rd - (MTL) Rabbit McVeigh - Howie Morenz, Alex Smith
3rd - (MTL) Butch Keeling - Vic Ripley, Frank Finnigan

Howie Morenz proving his worth as the 1st overall pick in the draft with 4 assists. He was selected 1st star, Hec Kilrea was selected 2nd star with 2 goals and 1 assist, 3rd star was Cecil Dillion with 1 goal and 1 assist. Montreal also had 52 shots to Boston's 20. Boston goalie Benny Grant saved 42 of 48 for a save percentage of .875 but Paul Goodman came in for garbage time saving 4 shots. Tiny Thompson had an ok game saving 17 of 20 for a save percentage of .850.

After a 6-3 win in Boston Garden the return leg was played at the Forum in Montreal. 10,905 crammed into the forum for the pre-season home opener.

1st - Howie Mornez (1) - Hec Kilrea (2)
1st - Butch Keeling (2, PP) - Frank Finnigan (2)
2nd - Hap Day (1) - Harvey Rockburn (2), Charlie Conacher (2)
3rd - Nels Crutchfield (1) - Rabbit McVeigh (1), Bert McInery (1)
3rd - Tommy Filmore (1) - Hap Day (1), Larry Aurie (1)

The Candiens just squeaked by the Bruins in the 2nd game of a home and home. I gave George Hainsworth a start in the back to back to keep Tiny Thompson fresh, he wasn;t very impressive though. Howie Mornez keeps impressing in the pre-season with his first goal. Benny Grant stopped 51 of 54 shots and was very solid on the night. Hainsworth on the other hand stopped 17 of 19 and was ok.

1st - Nels Crutchfield - 1 G, 1 P
2nd - Hap Day - 1 G, 1 A, 2 P
3rd - Butch Keeling - 1 G, 1 P

In our next pre-season adventure we travel to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks then on to New York to face Rangers in 2 away games back to back

Montreal @ Chicago

Montreal travelled to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks in pre-season action. 11,563 fans came out to watch at Chicago Stadium.

Montreal jumped out to a quick 3 goal lead. Goals came from Howie Mornez, Alex Smith and Sylvio Mantha. Each scored their 2nd, 1st and 1st goal of the pre-season. Cecil Dillion assisted on 2 of the 3 goals while Howie Mornez also had 1 assist. It looked all but over after 13 minutes. At the 14 minute mark though, Bun Cook scored to make it a 2 goal lead. Assists went to Pit Lepine and Jim O'Neil.

It wasn't looking good into the 3rd period for Chicago. They had to make something happen fast if they wanted to make anything out of this game. Georges Mantha made it a 1 goal game with assists going to Ebbie Goodfellow and Babe Siebert. Chicago had all the momentum and it looked like we would go into the 3rd period with the score 3-2 until King Clancy scored with 28 seconds left in the 2nd. Well it was a new game.

The 3rd period was all evens until the 13th minute when Red Horner and Bun Cook decided to drop the gloves. It seemed to change the momentum in Montreals favour as they scored the game winner just a minute later. Hec Kilrea scored the winner with Howie Mornez and Heldge Bostrom getting assists.

Earl Robertson made a start making it the 3rd different goalie in 3 games to start for the Canadiens. He made 26 saves on 29 shots while Lorne Chabot made 28 saves on 32 shots.

Howie Mornez was 1st start with 1 goal and 2 assists, Bun Cook was 2nd star with 1 goal and Cecil Dillion was 3rd with 2 assists.

Next we travel to New York to face the Rangers

Montreal @ New York

Montreal travelled to New York after a hard fought victory over the Blackhawks. Due to this hard fought victory some top players were pretty tired. 4/5th of the top line was given the day off. Howie Mornez and Cecil Dillion were notable omissions from the team sheet. The Canadiens however, started their number 1 goalie in this game after he was on the bench the last two backing up the two goals battling for the right to be the back up.

Hec Kilrea opened the scoring just 4 minutes from Sylvio Mantha and Frank Finnigan. It didn't take long for Andy Blair to tie the game up as he scored at 5:20 for the Rangers. That was all the scoring in the 1st.

Rabbit McVeigh who came in for the resting Cecil Dillion scored his 2nd goal of pre-season. Ted Graham also got an assist as a fill in.

Nels Crutchfield scored his 2nd goal of the pre-season as he came in for Mr.1st Overall Mornez. Red Horner got an assist. Red Horner had a busy 3rd period as he got into a 2d fight in a row. He fought Ching Johnson. Rabbit McVeigh put the nail in the coffin and the assists came from Nels Crutchfield and another fill in which was John Gallagher.

Tiny Thompson showed no rust after 2 games off by saving 28 of 29 shots. Alec Connell had a rought go making 18 saves on 22 shots.

Rabbit McVeigh was 1st star for his 2 goal performance. Bert McInerny was 2nd star with 1 assist. Tiny Thompson received 3rd star for posting a 0.966 save percentage in the game.

Chicago and the Rangers come to Montreal for a back to back in just 2 days time so stay tuned to see if we can keep out undefeated run going .
