1 out, man on 2nd: pitcher bunts

I thought this got fixed? I'm hard pressed to think of even the bunt-happiest of real life managers who would do this.

I just had this in my last game I played. I loved it. I was winning 5-2 and their leadoff hitter is hitting .089 (probably less then 10AB's) My pen blew the lead in the next inning 7-5 though and the guy I traded a whole bunch for (clone of Strawberry) hit a walk off 3 run HR 8-7 and unlocked some other Bronze achievement.

John Farrel the Media's current genius did that with the Jays last year. Not even a pitcher batting.

Harper did it last May. And he's not a pitcher either.

I was going to say, I'm pretty sure Tony La Russa has done this on many occasions. There's a lot of ways a runner can score from 3rd that he can't score from 2nd on, even with 2 outs. Since the pitcher is almost an automatic out anyways, might as well make their bat useful.

Actually, I cant remember a single time with the pitcher batting in this situation, the pitcher DIDNT do this.

This isnt a glitch, ALL managers do this nearly all the time.

I thought all these bunting frequencies in OOTP were based on retrosheet data from real baseball games. At the very least, I know people on beta have compared what the OOTP AI does in-game with real baseball data to confirm most of AI behaviour corresponds fairly well with real life managerial behaviour. There may be some exceptions though.

Perhaps I'm overreacting.

Managers call it and players (like Harper) sometimes do it on their own. Logically OOTP's AI should do it now and then.

I would not do it in a potential game winning situation, however, it does get your runner one station closer, and a passed ball would likely get him home.

The primary reason it took me by surprise was that I could have sworn I'd seen it mentioned that this behavior had been tweaked in OOTP 14.

EDIT: found it:

I think Erik may have the key. The AI might be comparing the pitchers contact and bunting skills and it figures having him bunt the runner over to third is more logical than expecting a hit from him.

Yeah, I think there may be something like that going on, because now that I think about it I've witnessed at least one situation where a pitcher swung away when I would have expected a bunt. If true, it's a nice change overall.

Not necessarily, if the pitcher really stinks swinging the bat but has decent bunting skills.

Even I don't do that. I have 1 sp with a .148 career avg (actually not that bad) but my leadoff hitter is a career .379 hitter. So if I still have a runner on 2nd and 2 out after the pitcher struck out or grounded out. I have this guy to drive him in. he has the most career RBI for a leadoff hitter in my league. Also my team is special.

Have you ever watched baseball? If there's a man on 1st and/or 2nd with less than 2 outs, the pitcher bunts.
