I love this game BUT
It has crashed more then ANY version I have ever played. And that's almost all of them. Doesn't seem to be any pattern other then when I HAVE NOT saved after a month or so(OOTP world) of play. I hope these bugs get fixed. It wont stop me from playing its just a pain in the butt.
edit- set game to auto-save after each week of play so most problems will be avoided. Last edited by mm7607; 06-18-2012 at 12:13 AM. |

I crash at least twice every in-game month. It says Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error (I have that memorize by now). I've tried fixing it myself every few (real-life) weeks, but nothing I have tried so far has had any effect.

I'm having the same problem with my league that I put my most time and love into. I had been planning this league for months, trying to work out the perfect settings for it. I also wrote pages and pages of back story in preparation for the league to take shape. In the end, I probably have made the file too big. I have four major leagues from around the world, and I have been incrementally adding on independent leagues to become my minor league system. With approximately 60 major-league teams, I think my file may be too much for ootp to handle.
That's my theory since I have not had the same problem with my historical replay nor a smaller fictional league I made with only 16 teams and one level of minors. |

This is my first version and I play on the Mac OS. It crashes on me once or occasionally twice a week. Usually it's early in a game that I'm managing and it displeases me greatly if we're good and ahead, pleases me greatly if we're good and behind.
It hasn't really caused me to lose any progress because I save like a maniac. That comes from 20 years in the newspaper business, where I hit Apple-S practically as often as I breathed, because redoing an entire newspaper page -- or newspaper -- on deadline, is nobody's idea of fun. So in OOTP, it's play a game, save. Forward the day's progress, save. Check my farm teams' games, save. Shuffle farm team lineups, save. Check the waiver wire and put in a claim, save. Shop three guys for trades, save. The only real inconvenience is in restarting, because I'll usually reboot the whole system just to feel like we're getting a fresh start and thus it'll be a longer time between crashes. |

though i have not used this version as much as others, mostly due to time and not waning interest, I would have to say I don't think I have crashed yet.
Win 7, one computer is 32bit, the other is 64. One has 8gb ram, the other has 12gb. |

I hate being a wet blanket but I would think that if game crashes were a common problem, we would be seeing much more activity on these boards about it. FWIW, I too have yet to have one crash with this version. As a matter of fact, the game's been quite stable for me for the last few versions.
You know the drill.

I'm having similar issues. This is fresh version of windows and install of OOTP since my hard drive crashed a couple of weeks ago.
It seems to happen when I hit the Manager news button on the toolbar. I've gone to weekly Auto-saves and since most news messages are at the end of the week when the auto-save happens, I rarely lose any results. |

I have seen people talking about crashing, but my current laptop nor desktop have ever had the game crash. Laptop is pretty cheap piece of equipment (though clean).

I haven't had a crash yet. Intel i7, 8GB, Windows 7 Home Premium.

Have you made a support ticket? I don't think they can fix your problem from here so if you havn't already it might be a good idea to create one, if you want the problem fixed and all

Other than a corrupt converted (v12-v13) league I've had zero crashes in v13. Many more in v12. Zero crashes in v11.
The inevitable conclusion seems to be that the computer is the likely source of crashes. With no conclusive evidence I do recommend meticulous defragmenting activity and driver updates. I'd also recommend not leaving an unsaved league open for hours without activity. No crashes, but it can take five minutes to exit. I also purge my league (box scores logs replay messages) each Jan1 (game date), after generating the almanac. Then do a full backup, rename ie league x Jan 1, save it externally and backup the slimmed down folder as your lifesaver for the new season. The size of the league folder goes way down to about 600MB from 1.7GB. A few thoughts FWIW.

I've run this on a crappy laptop in linux and a gaming beast with windows and haven't run into any problems. As an "IT Professional" (my actual title, no joke) I'd recommend uninstalling, removing everything (except your league backups), restarting, installing, and playing a fresh league for a bit before going back to the backups.

I suspect that having a fairly clean system helps out a lot as well.

How do you "purge your league"? Is it just the files in documents/OOTP/OOTP13/myleague/news/html/boxscores and ect? Thanks for the help by the way (I checked and disk defrag was at 0%, I defrag every Wednesday). |

I'd have to dig it up, but I think it's in the game preferences somewhere to purge the league files.

Could be the game, hard to know for sure It is as likely to be a Windows problem as it is an OOTP development problem.
But working in the technical field as long as I have, Microsoft has been on a downhill skid for a long, long time now. They don't have too many turns left in this game before becoming obsolete. The tablet PC arena has already passed them by, how long before the operating systems on them become powerful enough to work on laptops and desktops? Simply put, EVERYTHING crashes in Windows, even the most perfectly coded software imaginable. Too much leftover code from previous versions. Too much building on flaky architecture. Too much bloatware. To put it in OOTP language: If he was a rookie just called up from the minors in Windows 95... He's been an All-Star most of his career... His best year was in Windows 2000... He's got 17 years of Major League experience... That means he's about to retire. In fact, it is amazing he's made it this long. No one reading these forums doesn't trade that guy away. For what its worth, I've been playing on Linux Mint 12 (Lisa). The game will occasionally crash, but not so much that I've concluded the game is poorly written (at least in the Linux version). But then again, there is that nagging Licence problem PISD has with Linux. |

Use at your own risk. Backup before doing this. After running the batch file manually delete the messages.dat file. Otherwise the deleted messages will be regenerated. Quote:

I've never had a crash in 7 versions of this game. I've had 2 in the last month. A little frustrating but I keep coming back for more. I just save more often and back up all the time now.
