Bullpen strategies
I'm curious what other people's bullpen strategies are on building it? I'm having a hard time putting together even an average one and am not sure how to improve it. I've tried putting starters that aren't good enough for my rotation but that doesn't seem to work too well for me. I have a pretty neutral ballpark with only BA for LHB set to 1.1.
The one guy I have that's worth a damn is a 78 OVR Tom Burgmeier. I also have a gold Keone Kela who has been awful for two seasons now. |

I have a closer, two strikeout guys (left + right) as setup men, two guys with balanced ratings, i.e. good movement and control, as middle men, and one starter with balanced ratings as the long reliever.

I've been fairly successful with this setup:
- Closer (9th) - Setup (8th) - Stopper, LH (7th & Close) - Stopper, RH (7th & Close) - Middle Relief, best of the rest (Use more often) - Middle Relief (Normal) - Middle Relief (Normal, unless they deserve Avoid High Leverage) Typically for the Stoppers I like to use Closers, creating a Fireman strategy where my best pitchers are always coming in for high leverage & late innings. I'll shuffle different guys through the Stoppers until I find the ones that do well in Inherited Runners Score %. EDIT: Three affordable, mid-level Gold guys I have played and can see in league stats do well in IRS% are Felipe Vasquez, Jose Alvarado, & Adam Ottavino (bonus: he'll strike out Babe Ruth 100% of the time). I do similar. I have invested lots of PP into my pen (mostly gold and I have a couple starters swapped to relievers) but for the most part it's been reliable.
Top guy as closer - 9th Righty setup - 7th Lefty setup - 7th (and 2nd role lefty specialist) I usually run everyone else as middle, with whoever is on a cold streak or not performing generally I'll change to avoid high leverage. I have fiddled with setting a converted starter in as long relief but I find they sometimes get used in strange ways. I set the global strategy up to hook relievers a little more in the middle-late innings and not as much in the 9th. One guy who seems to outperform his numbers for me has been Ken Giles, and you can often grab him in the AH for a hair over 1k. |

I was sick of having poor results from my closers so I just stuck Patrick Corbin as my Closer for 8th or later. He's been a gem. I haven't checked my team yet today, but should finish the season with 100+ IP

I'm trying out a completely different approach. I have multiple LH/RH specialists with great splits and 2/3 guys with fairly even splits in traditional roles (closer/MR/LR). I'm doing this on three teams, so each has a little different twist right now (one uses stoppers, one a closer, one has three traditional guys as MR).
Small sample size, but so far it's been good. The box score looks like a spring training game with 4-5 pitchers, but the AI seems to be doing an okay job of using the specialists. In fact, 100% of the bullpen blowups so far have been from my balanced/traditional role guys. Not sure if it's viable, but thought it was worth a try. There are some cheap RP/CL available with ridiculous splits, but they don't work very well in traditional roles. Last edited by Weaseltail; 12-15-2018 at 01:51 PM. |

I just bought a Will Smith for 1200 and a Giles for 1299 to help. I have Smith as the closer, with Burgmeier and Giles as stoppers and Kela as a setup. Also have David Cone and Jonathon Niese as MR and Porcello as long/emergency SP.
So far so good. Thanks for all of the suggestions. |
