I've spent $0 and am having a lot of fun being terrible last season and decent this season. I have 1 diamond, 5 gold, 8 silver and the rest bronze.

Yay!

If your heart desires sitting on 27 Ted Williams cards of which you can only ever play one… you're talking to someone who believes in a free market, though, so I can only wrinkle my nose in disgust.

Then nobody will buy your cards. The AH prices are already going down because the big spenders have bought their teams and the rest of us are not going to pay the exorbitant prices of these first couple of weeks. So go ahead if you can afford it. I will watch you eat your big investment buying them over a couple weeks of your price fixing and laugh my rear off.

Just playing devil's advocate...I spent $20 total so far and it helped me win the WS. It's possible for small injections of cash to have a big impact. And that was with zero perfects/diamonds. Just a couple nice gold and silver cards that were good fits.

Exactly what I mean by a "crap shoot". You have 1 more diamond than I do and I spent $50 to your $0.

I was stupid though. I spent money to buy packs thinking I would get a reasonable return on them. Boy, was I ever wrong.

I think what some people actually want is to turn commissioner mode on for PT but they're afraid to admit it to themselves or others.

Poor me, I have a really good team and I will have to face these guys every week. Your team will find its own level in 2-3 more weeks and you will be competing against teams with like talent.
Theoretically, you’re right. But we won’t know for sure for a few more weeks if promo/relegation works as intended. I’m prepared for a rough week this week. With just 4 golds, I won 99 games last round. But the competition is much stiffer in the silver bracket. I’ll be lucky to play .500 ball.

Throwing money at players won't get you far. Making smart purchases will. Some players underperform and others overperform. Find the "overs" with research. I think the further we go if people spend wisely, the more the over players will stay at or go up in price while the unders drop in price since nobody will want them. No matter how much you pay a wonder, they aren't going to magically play good on a consistent basis.

Looks like you were really unlucky. I probably got more out of it than I deserved (1 perfect, 4 diamond in about 40 packs?), but I was also dumb-lucky enough to jump-start the whole thing by drawing Fergie Jenkins as my initial gold card and moving him for 20k on Day 1. I also made 10k from a Herb Score card and 5k from Manny Machado more recently in addition to buying $20 worth of points.

I am playing it all packs; I just like opening them too much. After PT went live, I only bought six cards off the market. Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Martinez, and Yoenis Cespedes with my initial Fergie loot (actually 5,900 total), and since then spent less than 200 points combined on '99 David Cone, Jake Lamb, and Clyde Milan.

It was already starting to work by the end of Beta.

Absolutely. I've learned my lesson about packs. I admit to being romanticized by the idea of pulling Babe Ruth and Sandy Koufax in packs. But seeing how incredibly rare these kinds of cards really are, its stupid in actuality to buy packs past a certain point.

I'm currently saving all PP to buy difference makers and taking my lumps with the current team I have.

P.S.(It is interesting how my 95 win team from last year has started out 1-8 so far...)

Just a cold streak maybe. Last season, I won 106 games with a disastrous 12-17 August. For my team that was a deep nose dive

I think there are a lot of reasons to not buy packs, but then I wonder if the AH would dry up of quality and/or new and rare players if not for those who do buy packs. This morning I decided to buy packs with one team and use the AH for the rest. The result was that I got two highly rated players in the same pack. The downside was that though they were highly rated (Jose Altuve and Jose Ramirez), they are close to being over-valued players. I can easily find players with much lower ratings that get better stats for a reasonable amount on the AH.

Can I, like.... get you to buy me some lottery tickets sometime?

Edit: Aaaaaand I see in another thread that you just pulled Trout. I'm definitely going to need you to buy me some lottery tickets...

Regarding the lottery, I am batting 0-for-148 on that one, so you might want to reconsider.

I couldn't disagree more. It's been a week and a half since Beta, and in that time, I've bought maybe 7 or 8 packs. Not counting my starting Gold card, I have pulled exactly 1 Gold, 0 Diamonds, and 0 Perfects. That one Gold (Patrick Corbin ftw) was placed on my roster, not sold.

And yet, before this most recent season, I was able to buy Severino in the AH and still have PP to spare. He's not the best of the best, obviously (he's not even best of his class), but he is a good, solid, Diamond card that I was able to outright buy with the PP I earned over just a week and a half of play, without spending a dime.

I don't think I got overly lucky, either. My starting Gold was Johnny Bench, who did well for me but not spectacular. I was definitely lucky to have an amazing season from Johnny Mize (also a starting pull), who earned Batting Champion in my league, but beyond that, almost all of the top performers on my team were Bronzes, Silvers, or low Golds that I targeted in the AH. And I wound up the "whale" in my division (104 wins).
