He is out of options but that is not a problem after September 1 as long as a 40-man spot is available.

I just did that this off season, and forgot, completely. Wondering why when I was looking at all these players they all said "ok"?
Then I looked at a FA I had signed, very few had interest in even though he plays exceptional defense at every single position, and was a former #1 pick, and it was because he was insanely injury prone.

So you've got a Daniel Hall-type player there. You can have TONS of funs with those.

Unless they've pulled their back in the first game back from the DL *again*.

I'd grab him. I love my Daniel Hall.

You have to love these close finishes at the end of the season. I love the excitement and feel that we will see Louisville in the playoffs. Once there I will be making my travel plans to cheer them on.

Once upon a time, a greenhorn GM facing his first trade deadline ventured into the deep end of the pool:

The All-Star Game brings all of the key executives together in mid-season with the trade deadline looming in the near future. Many discussions start there and continue through the end of the month. My conversations all start with the same name: Alfredo Gonzalez. Is he really available? Everybody needs pitching.

Bill Carter is the GM of the New York Monarchs. He is 61 years old and we really don’t have a lot in common. The guy lives in the past and relies on the wisdom of a bunch of tobacco-chewing rednecks for his baseball decisions. He doesn’t have much respect for a 26-year-old Bill James disciple like me. Frankly, I didn’t have much respect for his way either until I hired Fernando Candelaria and realized how valuable the advice of a good scout could be. But I digress. The point is that Bill Carter and I don’t have a relationship.

So I was quite surprised when Carter called to invite me to dinner on Wednesday night. We barely had our salads when Bill got right to the point. He started with a little history lesson, which he assumed to be necessary for a young greenhorn. I already knew all of this information of course, but I didn’t want to offend him so I let him spin his yarn.

Carter took over as GM of the Monarchs prior to the 1998 season. His first three years were losing seasons, but the team improved a little each year. Alfredo Gonzalez was New York’s best pitcher in 1998-99, but that is not saying much. Gonzalez was a combined 19-33 with a 3.98 ERA during the final two years of a 7-year, $112 million contract. Carter played hardball with the 36-year-old prior to the 2000 season, and signed him to a one-year deal at $4.5 million. It was a hometown discount from a player that had been with one team for his entire career and desperately wanted to retire there.

Gonzalez resented the heavy-handed negotiations and turned the tables after a 15-13 season in 2000, refusing all extension offers from New York. He became a free agent for 2001 and Louisville won the bidding war for his services at $9 million. Carter didn’t see a big problem because he had gotten the milestones (200 wins, 3,000 Ks) already and the Monarchs didn’t figure to be a contender. He was fooled when his young team jumped out to a 53-35 start, and he suddenly realized that he might be one pitcher away from a playoff berth. And thus here we are, talking about his old friend Gonzalez.

I may be young, but I understand how to deal with people. I value my credibility, so I had to be straight with Carter. I told him the truth. “Bill, I have been offered a lot for Gonzalez, and believe me it has been tempting to move him. But we continue to play well and I have to consider the opportunity to win a championship this year as the #1 goal. Therefore, I have decided to keep Gonzalez. I would really regret trading him if we have an injury to a starter and we lose a playoff series because of weak pitching.”

Carter seemed to appreciate the honesty but he couldn’t resist one last attempt over dessert. “It’s too bad Gonzalez is not available”, Carter said. “I was ready to part with Bland.” I tried hard not to choke on my crème brûlée.

Catcher Duncan Bland is the #12 prospect in the CBA and has “can’t miss” stenciled all over him. Candelaria drools at the mere mention of his name and gives him a five-star potential rating. Bland was the Monarch’s #1 draft pick in 1998 out of high school. He is 21 years old and currently playing at AAA, where his stat line is .312/.382/.465. He was the all-star catcher for his AAA league. He is a good defensive catcher with a strong arm. He is durable and has enough speed to steal a few bases. He is smart with a high work ethic, and is viewed as a team leader with strong loyalty. Financially, he has zero major league service time and is not on the 40-man roster.

“That’s a great offer, Bill, but it would take more than Bland to make me part with Gonzalez right now. I am not just negotiating. I really don’t think I can trade Gonzalez.”

Carter nodded as he paid the check. “I understand. Just do me one favor… if you change your mind between now and July 31; please call me first to see what else I could include in a package with Bland. We want Gonzalez and we will beat any offer.”

I went back to my office instead of going home. I wanted to look over those scouting reports on the Monarchs minor league system. I was just curious, of course. I have no intention of trading Gonzalez.

In the end, I did trade Gonzalez for Duncan Bland, and he became one of the all-time great players in the history of the Louisville Colonels. Bland is the franchise leader in games played, at bats, hits, runs scored, runs batted in, total bases, and walks. The 6-time all-star catcher is third on the Colonels career list in home runs, second in triples, and third in stolen bases. He has played over 1800 major league games, all of them in a Louisville Colonels uniform. And, above all else, he has six rings and was a key player on all of those championship teams.

Bland’s most recent contract, signed with Chris Porter in March of 2013, called for a vesting option of $16 million in the final year (2017). The hurdle for vesting was 480 plate appearances in the 2016 season, and it was clear that would not happen as early as last season when Bland became a bench player. The veteran accepted his new role like the class act that he is, and we never heard a peep out of him about the lack of playing time that would ultimately cost him millions of dollars.

We had not discussed his future plans until yesterday, when Bland and his agent met with Gordon Cooper and I over lunch at Gordon’s club. Both sides had obviously been thinking about the subject. Bland laid out his plans and I made a proposal. It was well received and we had a press release ready before we finished our steaks.

Subject: Louisville Legend Will Retire

Louisville Colonels star Duncan Bland announced today that this will be his final season as an active player. The 36-year-old catcher has played 14 seasons with the Colonels and was selected to the Federal League All-Star team six times. Bland has a .267 career batting average with 286 home runs and 1,000 RBIs.

The Colonels announced that Duncan Bland has accepted their offer to be the manager of the Evansville Aces (Class A) for the 2017 season. The contract of current Evansville manager Carlos Ordonez will not be renewed. The terms of Bland’s contract were not announced, but it is believed to be a five-year deal at above market value for a minor league skipper.

Colonels GM Otto Orcin said, “We are delighted to have Duncan Bland remain in our organization and excited that he will be working with our best young talent. There is no one better suited to teach Colonels baseball to our young players. Duncan Bland is a consummate pro and his leadership will be a valuable asset to our player development program.”

Bland joins Silas Campbell, hitting coach for the AAA Lexington Legends, as former Colonels stars now in the personnel ranks for the organization.

Note: I will post the player card for Duncan Bland with his final career stats after the regular season ends.

The truth is coaching is Duncan Bland's second choice. Mr. Bland approached Sal with an offer a couple of months ago. Mr. Bland wanted to buy into Sal's business and perhaps open additional locations in neighboring municipalities.

Sal had to turn him down.

Mr. Bland insisted on changing the name of the Sal's shop to "Bland Cuts." Sal gives no customer a bland cut. Never.

LF Joe Young, BAL 50G, .250/.353/.483, traded for Santiago Flores
SP Wallace Trauttmann, PHI 10G, 3-7, 5.60 ERA, traded for Nathan Graves
2B Jonathan Kelly, PHI 30G, .277/.351/.373, traded for Nathan Graves
SP Ben Gentry, CIN 14G, 4-2, 4.22 ERA, traded for Chao Yang
SP Marcos Maestas, CIN 10G/7GS, 1-4, 6.29 ERA, traded for Chao Yang

LF Dennis Bennett, NY 58G, .202/.276/.384, traded for AA SP Dean Daniels
SP Pippino Franchitti, SAC 20G, 7-12, 4.22 ERA, traded for Francisco Longoria
SP Edison Mazzone, SD 24G, 7-14, 4.70 ERA, traded for Jose Martinez
CF Jose Cruz, SD 94G, .279/.329/.464, traded for Jose Martinez
INF Shane Plumbly, DEN 146G, .286/.360/.413, traded for Holcomb/Jennings
SP Will Spencer WAS 32G, 10-13, 5.45 ERA, traded for Morales/Bustamante
2B Jason Searles WAS 143G, .246/.296/.331, traded for Morales/Bustamante
SP Ray Alexander WAS 25G/17GS, 7-9, 4.45 ERA, Rule 5 draft pick
CF Ray Banks CLE/PHI 126G, .263/.318/.443, left as free agent
1B Mike Guy PHI 136G, .286/.370/.518, left as free agent
CF Rafael Valdez SEA 87G now on D/L, .261/.355/.385, traded for AAA CL Ray Forrest
RF Fernando Chavez, CLE 130G, .241/.327/.390, claimed off waivers 2015 by CLE
SP Mike Anderson, PIT 32G, 10-13, 5.45 ERA, traded for Diaz/Polk
RF Eduardo Sanchez, CHI/DET 127G, .223/.310/.314, traded for Bowles
CF Rafael Vasquez (not Valdez), SAC 136G, .276/.339/.413, traded for McConnell

Plumbly and Guy have enjoyed very successful seasons. Brooks and Young have performed well for Baltimore. Merced, Gentry, and Cruz have done just about what you could expect from them. Ray Alexander’s comeback season was pretty good for his minimum salary.

Trauttmann did not have a good second half without our defense behind him. Mazzone and Franchitti have poor records but they threw a lot of innings for bad teams. Spencer has really under-performed his salary level. Bennett struggled as a platoon-regular in the Big Apple. Valdez was hurt and his performance declined (as predicted).

Like I said, the Colonels always find a way into October baseball, one way or the other.

CBA STANDINGS – 2016 FINAL

Fans of the Indianapolis Indians have a legitimate beef with the league office.
They split the final four games with us, yet we go to the playoffs and they stay home.

Providence pulled away during the last week to take the final Patriot playoff spot.

LOUISVILLE COLONELS – 2016 REGULAR SEASON FINAL STATS

We set up a very unusual rotation for the playoffs because of rest. San Francisco is very good vs. left-handers, so Yang will pitch out of the bullpen for this series. That could be different next time if we advance, but Bowles has a better chance of a dominating start.

The batting order shown was used down the stretch, but we only scored 3 runs per game in September and a shuffle might spark the offense. I plan to bat Gillespie fifth, behind Martinez, to give him more RBI opportunities. McConnell will be dropped to sixth with hotter hitters Harmon and Castro moved up. Gillespie and McConnell can use their speed if they get on base ahead of the bottom of the order.

The top pitchers will need to perform if we are going to go deep into the post-season. We especially need strong starts from Longoria and consistent stops from the back end of the bullpen. Offensively, we need to get the timely hits that eluded us so often down the stretch.

Most Popular Players:
1. SS Luis Vargas
2. SP Jerome Clark (I don’t understand this one.)
3. SP Edgardo Ordonez
4. CF Bryan McConnell
5. C Duncan Bland
