Then I looked at a FA I had signed, very few had interest in even though he plays exceptional defense at every single position, and was a former #1 pick, and it was because he was insanely injury prone.

Unless they've pulled their back in the first game back from the DL *again*. I'd grab him. I love my Daniel Hall.

You have to love these close finishes at the end of the season. I love the excitement and feel that we will see Louisville in the playoffs. Once there I will be making my travel plans to cheer them on.

Once upon a time, a greenhorn GM facing his first trade deadline ventured into the deep end of the pool:
Quote:
In the end, I did trade Gonzalez for Duncan Bland, and he became one of the all-time great players in the history of the Louisville Colonels. Bland is the franchise leader in games played, at bats, hits, runs scored, runs batted in, total bases, and walks. The 6-time all-star catcher is third on the Colonels career list in home runs, second in triples, and third in stolen bases. He has played over 1800 major league games, all of them in a Louisville Colonels uniform. And, above all else, he has six rings and was a key player on all of those championship teams. Bland’s most recent contract, signed with Chris Porter in March of 2013, called for a vesting option of $16 million in the final year (2017). The hurdle for vesting was 480 plate appearances in the 2016 season, and it was clear that would not happen as early as last season when Bland became a bench player. The veteran accepted his new role like the class act that he is, and we never heard a peep out of him about the lack of playing time that would ultimately cost him millions of dollars. We had not discussed his future plans until yesterday, when Bland and his agent met with Gordon Cooper and I over lunch at Gordon’s club. Both sides had obviously been thinking about the subject. Bland laid out his plans and I made a proposal. It was well received and we had a press release ready before we finished our steaks. |

Subject: Louisville Legend Will Retire Louisville Colonels star Duncan Bland announced today that this will be his final season as an active player. The 36-year-old catcher has played 14 seasons with the Colonels and was selected to the Federal League All-Star team six times. Bland has a .267 career batting average with 286 home runs and 1,000 RBIs. The Colonels announced that Duncan Bland has accepted their offer to be the manager of the Evansville Aces (Class A) for the 2017 season. The contract of current Evansville manager Carlos Ordonez will not be renewed. The terms of Bland’s contract were not announced, but it is believed to be a five-year deal at above market value for a minor league skipper. Colonels GM Otto Orcin said, “We are delighted to have Duncan Bland remain in our organization and excited that he will be working with our best young talent. There is no one better suited to teach Colonels baseball to our young players. Duncan Bland is a consummate pro and his leadership will be a valuable asset to our player development program.” Bland joins Silas Campbell, hitting coach for the AAA Lexington Legends, as former Colonels stars now in the personnel ranks for the organization. Note: I will post the player card for Duncan Bland with his final career stats after the regular season ends. |

The truth is coaching is Duncan Bland's second choice. Mr. Bland approached Sal with an offer a couple of months ago. Mr. Bland wanted to buy into Sal's business and perhaps open additional locations in neighboring municipalities.
Sal had to turn him down. Mr. Bland insisted on changing the name of the Sal's shop to "Bland Cuts." Sal gives no customer a bland cut. Never. |

Brooks and Young have performed well for Baltimore. Merced, Gentry, and Cruz have done just about what you could expect from them. Ray Alexander’s comeback season was pretty good for his minimum salary. Trauttmann did not have a good second half without our defense behind him. Mazzone and Franchitti have poor records but they threw a lot of innings for bad teams. Spencer has really under-performed his salary level. Bennett struggled as a platoon-regular in the Big Apple. Valdez was hurt and his performance declined (as predicted). |

CBA STANDINGS – 2016 FINAL
Fans of the Indianapolis Indians have a legitimate beef with the league office. They split the final four games with us, yet we go to the playoffs and they stay home. Providence pulled away during the last week to take the final Patriot playoff spot. |

LOUISVILLE COLONELS – 2016 REGULAR SEASON FINAL STATS
We set up a very unusual rotation for the playoffs because of rest. San Francisco is very good vs. left-handers, so Yang will pitch out of the bullpen for this series. That could be different next time if we advance, but Bowles has a better chance of a dominating start. The batting order shown was used down the stretch, but we only scored 3 runs per game in September and a shuffle might spark the offense. I plan to bat Gillespie fifth, behind Martinez, to give him more RBI opportunities. McConnell will be dropped to sixth with hotter hitters Harmon and Castro moved up. Gillespie and McConnell can use their speed if they get on base ahead of the bottom of the order. The top pitchers will need to perform if we are going to go deep into the post-season. We especially need strong starts from Longoria and consistent stops from the back end of the bullpen. Offensively, we need to get the timely hits that eluded us so often down the stretch. Most Popular Players: 1. SS Luis Vargas 2. SP Jerome Clark (I don’t understand this one.) 3. SP Edgardo Ordonez 4. CF Bryan McConnell 5. C Duncan Bland |
