A Lovely PT Baseball Universe
Today I tried M. Rivera as an opener (rather than closer)...
The plan was to have him pitch to 3-7 batters & hand the ball off to Christy Mathewson. Instead... He pitched 6-1/3 innings. He allowed only 3 hits but 2 of them were home runs (Snider, Piazza got him). Both of them were Solo Jobs, Tim Lincecum did fine after him allowing just 1 more run. Flyers only put up 1 run on a double early in the game, though. 3-1 loss.

Did you set a pitch limit?

Only the 2nd time I've intentionally set an opener...
See, last time the plan was more like for the starter (a traditional starter) to go about 6 but he only went 1-2/3rds or something... So I set up Mariano the same way but he stayed in longer. I may have had my global strat setting changed to long hook on starter vs. the other game or it may have been something else. On another occasion I wasn't trying to do anything in particular & was happy with how the AI used the pitchers for about a couple weeks. IN other words it was the same kinda deal where I wasn't exactly sure but I didn't get the backwards results I got in this case. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised with how intelligent the artificial intelligence was.

Goddarn, how did the AI let him stay so long?! What's your strategy setting? I am intrigued because the AI manager keeps pulling my opener early.

Well, he only threw 66 pitches to the 23 batters he faced. Very economical...
I watched the replay before I looked at the boxscore and he just kept coming out...for the 3rd, then 4th, then 5th, then 6th, then 1 batter in the 7th. 3 hits, 2 HR, 1 K, 1 BB. He had an extended leash, no pitch limit, from a spot in the starting rotation. I'm sure of that much.
