1999 MLB Draft
Benny Mueller was drafted first overall and signed quickly with the Expos. He has elite range in centerfield and tons of power potential. Dexter Rivera was the first high schooler off the board. He has balance on offense and good speed but may end up at second base instead of shortstop. The first pitcher was Australian Ryker Parker who was originally drafted by the Phillies out of high school but chose instead to attend the University of Kentucky. |

Records fall
A few records on offense fell this year -
The longest-standing record to fall was most runs in a year. Salvador Feliciano crossed the plate 149 times, three more than Johan Velez in 1931. Vern Yepsen took 164 free passes, 8 more than Sean Burks in 1950. Woody Shaw set the new mark for slugging percentage, beating out Aaron Purves and Benjamin Aguirre from the last few years. |

1999 Hall of Fame
Jake McCallister, SS McCallister was a doubles machine and slick-fielding shortstop for the better part of a decade. He was still able to hold onto some value into his mid-to-late 30s, even putting up a 3 WAR season at age 37. He finished second all-time for shortstops in doubles, just between Lester Taylor and Matthew Jiles. His overall value was just around Dodger great Jiles as well. Initial Acquisition: Number 7 overall pick by the Rockies out of Iowa MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, Paul Vines Slugging Awards - 3, All-Star Appearances - 3, World Series Championships - 1, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 9262 PA, 2248 H, 100 HR, 8 SB, 0.319 wOBA, 101 wRC+, 100.9 ZR, 56.4 WAR, 46.3 JAWS Walton Turner, LHP Turner begins a group of four very strange pitching Hall of Fame cases. Turner had an incredible peak with seven seasons of 4+ WAR, but almost nothing else in his career. His JAWS score is acceptable for a pitcher but his overall WAR total does not even come close. Initial Acquisition: Number 205 overall pick by the Giants out of Steele Canyon MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, J.P. Avila Awards - 1, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, All-Star Appearances - 5, World Series Championships - 0, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 2249.2 IP, 849 BB, 1674 K, 3.68 FIP, 88 FIP-, 43.2 WAR, 55.9 JAWS Rick Nelson, LHP Nelson has solid JAWS and WAR numbers, but doesn't have anything that sticks out as a Hall of Fame pitcher. He just pitched a lot of games for 17 years and only finished in the top-3 J.P. Avila voting once. He started 30+ games 13 times, maxing out at 37 games started three times. Initial Acquisition: Number 15 overall pick by the Diamondbacks out of Michigan MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, J.P. Avila Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, All-Star Appearances - 3, World Series Championships - 1, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 3836 IP, 1016 BB, 1889 K, 3.98 FIP, 95 FIP-, 59.5 WAR, 53.2 JAWS Tommy Butler, RHP Butler is in a somewhat similar boat to Turner, but somehow different. His JAWS numbers are fine for the Hall, but total WAR is much too low. He does seem to actually have a better case than Turner, even though his numbers are worse. He had consistent 4-5 WAR seasons over 8 years but didn't provide enough value otherwise. Initial Acquisition: Number 10 overall pick by the Orioles out of Buford MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, J.P. Avila Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 1, All-Star Appearances - 5, World Series Championships - 1, Playoff MVPs - 1 Career Stats: 2911.2 IP, 1140 BB, 1946 K, 3.99 FIP, 95 FIP-, 44.5 WAR, 50.3 JAWS Solomon Davis, LHP Despite having some of the worst value stats of the group, Davis almost has the best Hall of Fame case. He did win the J.P. Avila award and had six seasons of over 5 WAR, but again didn't provide much value otherwise. Initial Acquisition: Number 15 overall pick by the White Sox out of Wichita State MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, J.P. Avila Awards - 1, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, All-Star Appearances - 6, World Series Championships - 3, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 2765.1 IP, 749 BB, 1873 K, 3.58 FIP, 85 FIP-, 56.2 WAR, 47.3 JAWS Winston Cruz, RH Reliever Cruz almost seemed to be a lock as the next Hall of Fame reliever behind Tim Beckman, but somehow decided to retire at age 34. He won Beckman's award four times and was a yearly all-star. He actually finished in the top three of the J.P. Avila Award twice. But again, not enough total value there to warrant induction as a reliever. Initial Acquisition: Number 256 overall pick by the White Sox out of Apopka MLB Awards: Tim Beckman Relief Awards - 4, All-Star Appearances - 7, World Series Championships - 2, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 782.1 IP, 340 SV, 181 BB, 840 K, 2.5 FIP, 58 FIP-, 27 WPA, 28.8 WAR, 26.3 JAWS Merlin Wallace, SS Initial Acquisition: Number 2 overall pick by the Yankees out of Allatoona MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, Paul Vines Slugging Awards - 3, All-Star Appearances - 1, World Series Championships - 0, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 7798 PA, 1968 H, 185 HR, 69 SB, 0.342 wOBA, 113 wRC+, -80.1 ZR, 35.7 WAR, 30.7 JAWS Silas Rascon, 3B Initial Acquisition: Number 48 overall pick by the Astros out of Central Catholic MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, Paul Vines Slugging Awards - 2, All-Star Appearances - 2, World Series Championships - 0, Playoff MVPs - 1 Career Stats: 6096 PA, 1612 H, 170 HR, 13 SB, 0.337 wOBA, 110 wRC+, -41.9 ZR, 27.6 WAR, 25.6 JAWS Johan Ruvalcaba, RHP Initial Acquisition: Number 226 overall pick by the Rockies out of New Mexico State MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, J.P. Avila Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, All-Star Appearances - 1, World Series Championships - 1, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 2782 IP, 1496 BB, 2285 K, 4.41 FIP, 104 FIP-, 30.2 WAR, 24.3 JAWS Ethan Laurence, RH Reliever Initial Acquisition: Number 92 overall pick by the White Sox out of Buford MLB Awards: Tim Beckman Relief Awards - , All-Star Appearances - 1, World Series Championships - 1, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 813.2 IP, 195 SV, 308 BB, 608 K, 4.18 FIP, 100 FIP-, 5.8 WPA, 4.2 WAR, 14.7 JAWS Ethan Shaw, RH Reliever Initial Acquisition: Number 46 overall pick by the Mariners out of Hortonville MLB Awards: Tim Beckman Relief Awards - 0, All-Star Appearances - 2, World Series Championships - 1, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 725.1 IP, 231 SV, 326 BB, 643 K, 3.8 FIP, 91 FIP-, 8.2 WPA, 7.7 WAR, 14.5 JAWS Nathan Harrison, LHP Initial Acquisition: Number 475 overall pick by the Indians out of Walton MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, J.P.
