Player Ratings

I am trying to get a better grasp on player ratings, mainly how they affect the potential of the player and the difference in ability/potential based upon number of stars.

For example, Mike Green on the Red Wings is only 1 1/2 stars which seems very low for a guy who scored 31 goals at one point as a defenseman.

What is the average rating, what is the low rating, and what is considered a superstar rating?

* = below average?
** = somewhat below average?
*** = average?
**** = above average?
***** = superstar?

Is there a higher rating than 5 stars?

Any clarification would be helpful, as this is one of the areas I was often confused with in FHM2.

The manual gives a decent breakdown of it.

Won't retype it all, but 1 star is the minimum for an NHL player to be considered an 'NHL' player.

Adjusting your chart with my own interpretation:

1 star - replacement level player
2 stars - contributes to the team, but nothing to write home about.
3 stars - solid player, not an all star, but capable of occasional greatness
4 stars - players who perform at an allstar level more often than not
5 stars - dominant players in the league

Also from the manual.. "Considerable differences can exist between the way teams, scouts, and popular opinion rates an individual player."

Also from the manual: "The stars shown are always relative to the league you are currently managing in (or, if you are unemployed, the NHL or the top-level league in a fictional game) - if you are in a very low-level league, most players at the top of the hockey world will look like five-star players to you, since they would dominate your league if they played in it."

Thanks for the info. I haven't looked at the manual for FHM3 yet, and I felt like the FHM2 information was vague at best. This definitely helps me though.

Green's probably due for a bit of an offensive ratings increase, he's off to a decent start this year. But he's a long way removed from that 31-goal season, and the defensive side of his game is always going to drag the overall rating down.
