Boston Bruins (28-19-4) at Montreal Canadiens (30-20-2)

We are going head to head with the team we are fighting for 3rd and the final guarenteed playoff spot in the Atlantic. We have played the Bruins twice this year and have won both games by scores of 3-1 and 3-0. Montreal sent back R Richard Day to the AHL due to the back to back situation. Montreal has been getting pretty good production from LD Yegor Berestnev recently. He has points in 5 of his last 6 games for 11 points, all assists. On the season he has 6 goals and 38 points in 52 games.

The Boston Bruins are real tight defensively, they have allowed just 26 shots per game, 2nd only to Montreal. The Bruins give up 2.18 GAA per game good for 3rd.

RD Gerald Lowe leads the Bruins with 40 points, including 1st on the team with 25 assists. The 32 year old 1982 Conn Smythe Winner is primarily a defensive defenseman with superior checking and shooting skills. In 215 career NHL games with the Bruins he has 41 goals and 150 points with 217 PIMs and a +76 rating.

C Andrew Carylyon is 2nd on the Bruins with 34 points, including 14 goals. The 38 year old two-way forward has great speed and is a good stick checker. In his 3rd season with the Bruins, he has 42 goals and 99 points with 42 PIMs and a +73 rating in 142 injury reduced NHL games.

LW Danny Clair leads the Bruins with 17 goals, he also has 31 points in 51 games. The 20 year old two-way forward is strong in his defensive positioning and physical strength. In his 2nd year as a Bruin, he had 6 goals and 27 points in 82 games as a rookie last year. The former Kamloops Blazer (WHL) selected 89th overall by the Bruins in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

The Bruins will start G Jerry Welch, he has 22 wins in 37 starts with a .916 save %. Montreal starts G Mike Blackshear, he has 25 wins in 42 starts with a .895 save %.

Montreal gets an early 1-0 when they score on a 5 on 3 at 1:41. LW Lorenzo Bocci pots his 20th of the year. Shortly after that, LD Yegor Berestnev leaves the game with a wrist injury. The period ends with the Bruins out shooting Montreal 11 to 9.

Boston ties the score 1-1 at 16:18 of the 2nd period when RW Kelly Russell gets his 13th of the year. Montreal out shoot Boston 11 to 6 in the 2nd period. Montreal is 1 for 3 on the PP, Boston is 0 for 3.

Boston outshot Montreal 11 to 8 in the 3rd period and the shots are tied 28 to 28 just like the score. Both teams had 2 PPs in the 3rd but they solved nothing. We head into overtime.

Montreal gets the only 2-shots of overtime, RW Al Ladd had the best opportunity 45 seconds in, but he was stymied.

Boston outscores the Habs 2-1 in the shoot out for the extra point and the win.

Boston RW Kelly Russell is named the 1st star with his goal, but what was remarkable was that he had 11 shots on goal. The 20 year old now has 13 goals and 25 points in 52 games. In his 2nd season as a Bruin, he had 25 goals and 45 points in 82 games last year in his rookie season. The former Niagara IceDog was the Bruins 1st round, 29th overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

The Jets currently sit 7th in the Western Conference with 59 points, 25 behind the West leading Oilers. The Jets do put a lot of pucks on the net averaging 31 shots per game or 11th in the NHL. But the Jets do struggle on the PP, ranking 24th in the NHL with a 12.5% success rate.

Trade Deadline Analysis Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens get ready for the stretch run with 28 games left in the schedule and the trade deadline set for February 1st. Montreal is really a bubble team, currently holding the 1st Wild Card Spot in the East, a point ahead of the Lightning who have a game in hand. The Capitals would be next with 60 points in 53 games. But what motivates me to get to the dance is that we were an 8th seed less than 24 months ago and won it all with some incredible playoff performances by guys still in the line-up.

Atlantic GP W L OT PTS DIFF

G Mike Blackshear was 16-5 in the playoffs that season with a 1.62 GAA and .934 save %. LD Marc-Andre Berube had 10 points in 21 games with a +14 rating. LW Lorenzo Bocci had 7 goals and 18 points with a +9 rating in 21 games. C Chris Hughes had 8 goals and 18 points in 21 games with a +10 rating. C Dave Wright had 7 goals and 16 points with a +8 rating.

An area of concern for Montreal based on their defensive style, is the lack of shot blocking. Montreal uses the "Collapsing to the Net" defensive style and it requires good shot blocking. This is supported by the fact the many of the goals against this season have been scored from the point by defenseman. The Top forward shot blockers in the NHL are currently around 50 or more including the NHL leader Winnipeg Jets LW Will Newby with 87. Montreal's top forward at shot blocking is "captain" C Chris Hughes with 56.

Montreal Canadiens Rankings

PK % 82.5% 23rd
FO % 51.9% 5th

So the hunt will start for a shot blocking forward, hopefully one that likes to give out the occasional hit.

Montreal Canadiens
(30-21-3) at Calgary Flames (28-21-4)

The Canadiens held a news conference earlier today to announce a trade. The Montreal Canadiens have traded 19 year old LW Petr Svestka to the New York Rangers in exchange for 23 year old RW John Herrod.

Svestka has played 7 games with the Canadiens since being called up and has 2 goals and 2 points. In 35 AHL games this season he had 18 goals and 31 points. Svestka was Montreal's 117th over all pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

Montreal gets a two-way forward in Herrod, he has 13 goals and 45 points in 55 games this season. Herrod has 78 shot blocks already this season, an area Montreal wanted to improve on. He also had 62 hits which would place him 5th on the Canadiens forwards. In 219 career NHL games, all with the Rangers, Herrod has 43 goals and 164 points with 139 PIMs and a -12 rating. Its expected Montreal will play Herrod on the 1st line with C Hughes and LW Bocci. RW Ladd will drop to the 2nd line with C Wright and LW Bohm while RW Ronov will drop to the 3rd line with LW Vanoosten and C Marvin.

The Flames find themselves in the final playoff spot in the West with 60 points, a mere 24 points behind the rivals from the North the Oilers. The Flames play a pretty sound defensive game, giving up only 27 shots a game or ranked 8th in the NHL. The Flames are ranked 17th on the PP at a 15.0% success rate.

C Clinton Antkowiak leads the Flames with 39 points, including 15 goals in 53 games. The 24 year old from Coquitlam, BC is a two-way forward. The Senators traded Antkowiak to the Flames on September 16th, 1981. In 214 career NHL games, he has 53 goals with 130 points and 464 PIMs with a +54 rating.

LW Pier-Olivier Chouinard is 2nd on the Flames with 37 points, but leads the Flames with 19 goals in 50 games. The 21 year old offensive forward was a rookie last season, scoring 21 goals and had 60 points in 81 games for the Flames. The Wild have the 1st ranked PK at 90.3% and the 3rd ranked PP at 20.2%. An area to exploit with the Wild is that they give up 32 shots per game ranking them 21st in the NHL.

Before the game, Montreal made a roster move. Montreal sent LW Daniel Mikulecky to the AHL Ice Caps and recalled C Jim Rutgers. The 28 year old Rutgers has 4 goals and 9 points in 20 AHL games. Just a small shake up to hopefully help us down the stretch. Montreal is hoping to get RW Yevgeny Ronov going again. The 21 year old has only 2 assists in his last 5 games with a -1 rating. The speedy Russian maybe feeling the effects of the 3rd line role change.

The Islanders currently sit in the 5th spot in the East, and 2nd in the Metropolitan Division. They don't give up many goals, but they don't score alot either.

Last year in his rookie season, he had 13 goals, 56 points, 52 PIMs and a -12 rating in 82 games. Hull was the Islanders 110th overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

Montreal finally breaks the goose egg at 5:41 of the 2nd period, RW John Herrod scores his 17th of the season to make it 1-0. We mentioned earlier we would like to see RW Yevgeny Ronov find his game, well he finds the net at 8:44 with his 10th goal of the year to make it 2-0. The shots in the 2nd are tied 11 to 11.

The Islanders get on the board at 3:11 of the 3rd when LD Jesse Murray gets his 5th of the season to make it 2-1 Montreal. Vancouver Canucks (24-30-9) at Montreal Canadiens (36-23-3)

The Canucks come to visit the Bell Center and the Montreal Canadiens today. Montreal played Vancouver in Vancouver and came away with a 3-2 win in there only meeting this season. The Habs have just resigned LD Marc-Andre Berube this past week, but find him struggling a little Not that he is expected to light up the lamp, he has gone 12 games without a point and is a -2 during those 12 games.
