Live: Join Rufus Snackbar for tonight’s exciting game six of the league championship series between the defending champion Magpies and the Rattlesnakes.

Preview: The Rattlesnakes looked dead and buried heading into the 9th inning of game five, but showed real guts to respond and win a sensational victory. Can they square the series with another win tonight at Iowa Ballpark, or can the Magpies get the one win they need to reclaim their Western League crown and return to the Cup Final Series? Ace Luis Vélez will face the Rattlesnakes’ former first round pick Ramón Hinojosa.

1st inning: A stunning start for the Magpies! With 2 outs, back-to-back doubles from Earl Becker and Ángel Márquez score 3 runs, and then Márquez himself scores on a wild pitch from Hinojosa that got away from Rattlesnakes catcher Michael West. It’s 4-0 already!

2nd inning: The situation is looking critical for the Rattlesnakes now. 3B Michael Ross fumbles what should have been a routine groundball from Rob Crawford, and Bob Ayers comes home. That’s 5-0 Magpies.

4th inning: Surely Carson City won’t be able to launch a comeback this time! A struggling Hinojosa opens the inning with 3 straight singles before being pulled. The bases were loaded and the Magpies didn’t miss out, scoring 2 more runs. 7-0!

5th inning: It’s all over! The Magpies will be heading back to the Cup Final Series. And it’s that man again! Crawford homers for the fourth consecutive game, and it’s a 3-run shot. 10-0 Magpies. What a way to respond from the disappointment of failing to close out game 5.

7th inning: The merest hint of a glimmer of hope? Vélez has been excellent until now, but the Rattlesnakes finally have some joy, scoring 3 runs before reliever Ramón González finally closes out the inning.

9th inning: González is rumoured to be the Magpies’ likely closer next season if they do trade Ken James, and you can see why on tonight’s performance. He completes 2.1 super innings to see out the game. The Magpies win 10-3 and are Western League champions for the second straight year and the fourth time in franchise history!

Stage set for titanic Cup Final Series battle
Magpies favourites to beat Tennessee and retain title

By Tim Curtain, 10:12AM, 19 Oct 2053

And then there were two. It’s taken 2,430 regular season games, 2 wildcard matches, and 28 division and league championship series games, but now 28 teams have been eliminated and just two remain standing. Reigning SCL champions Des Moines will face Eastern League pennant winners Tallahassee in a rematch of the 2046 Cup Final Series. That time, GM Billy DePodesta’s first season in charge, the Magpies triumphed. Can they repeat the trick again this time?

They will certainly begin the series as hot favourites, after winning an SCL-leading 103 games and, relatively speaking, cruising through the playoffs so far. Tallahassee, on the other hand, have endured a far more tortuous route. Inconsistent for much of the season, they finished at 83-79 in a three-way tie atop the South East Division with Montgomery and Atlanta, and only made the postseason by winning the hastily-arranged playoff. They then slugged out an epic duel with Augusta in the division series, finally winning in the 9th inning of the deciding fifth game. The 4-1 league championship series win against Columbus was admittedly much more comfortable, but will forever be remembered for the remarkable second game, where Tallahassee surrendered a 9-3 lead in the bottom of the 9th inning, only to score 6 runs of their own in the top of the 10th.

Des Moines Magpies Finance Department
FINANCIAL PROJECTIONS REPORT

This note provides a summary of the club’s financial projections for the next two seasons, 2054 and 2055. The owners have confirmed that the club’s budget for player payroll next season remains at $230m. We are currently projected to be considerably under budget.

From our current payroll of $136m, our latest projection for next year is $161m. This reflects agreed contractual increases to several players, including Ken James ($4.2m to $11.5m), Rob Crawford (salary minimum to $5.5m), Tadamichi Hamada (minimum to $11.0m) and Ernesto Solís ($5.5m to $9.0m). Pitcher Cody Thomas will be leaving to free agency. The only uncertainty is Marv Lewis, who, while still injured, is a candidate for super-2 eligibility for arbitration.

The budget could be under more pressure in 2055. After the 2054 season, a number of key players are scheduled to hit free agency, including Ray Parker (2054 salary of $15m), Ángel Márquez ($15m), Gonzalo Torralda ($7.5m), Pedro Soto ($13m), Tom Hart ($9m) and Jesús Benítez ($3.2m). I assume you will want to negotiate extensions with at least some of these players, and all are expected to seek salary increases to remain with us. Several players will also become arbitration eleigible for the first time after the 2054 season, including David Gaines, Robert Terry and Ramón González. If you do not sign any free agents this offseason, I think we would be able to afford to retain all these players through into 2055, but trading one or two of the bigger contracts would provide you with a more comfortable cushion to accommodate salary increases.

Live: It’s here! Game one of the 2053 SCL Cup Final Series! Morgan Climax is in the hot seat at Iowa Ballpark to bring you all the action as it happens, as the Magpies host the Islanders.

Preview: Both the Magpies’ Cup Final Series triumphs have gone to a seventh game showdown. That includes the classic 2046 win against the Islanders, and many neutrals will be hoping for the same again. The bookmakers, however, view this series as an easy win for the Magpies, who won fully 20 gams more than their Floridian opponents during the regular season. The Magpies will have experienced starter Tom Hart on the mound today, while the Islanders begin the series by giving the ball to their 23-year-old starlet Francisco Padilla.

3rd inning: The Islanders strike first. Hart was perfect through the first 2 innings, but ran into trouble here, allowing an RBI single before loading the bases. But a crucial strikeout of DH Jason Lewis strands the runners and ends the frame without any further damage.

4th inning: What a hit from Gonzalo Torralda! 442 feet over deep right field! We’re tied at 1-1.

7th inning: Islanders reliever Matt Wright gives up 3 singles to load the bases with 2 outs. A wild pitch allows Tadamichi Hamada to put the Magpies 2-1 ahead, but a crucial strikeout of Ángel Márquez ends the inning. A missed opportunity to put the game to bed for the Magpies.

8th inning: Hart has been superb tonight. He leaves to a standing ovation after giving up just 1 run on 4 hits over 8 innings. This postseason he’s now 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA. But the Magpies lead in the game remains just the 1 run.

9th inning: The Magpies hang on! Closer Ken James nearly makes a complete hash of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. But 2 vital strikeouts followed by a flyout somehow extricates him from the jam and wins the game! What a finish! Magpies win, 2-1.

Late comeback puts Magpies in charge of Cup Final Series

By Maggie Pye | 21 Oct | 43,919 comments

Over 44,000 fans packed into a chilly Iowa Ballpark for game two of the 2053 Cup Final Series. And they went home happy after postseason specialist Earl Becker delivered the coup de grâce on a stirring Magpies comeback.

The game had started so well for Tallahassee. Carlos Rosales’s 2-RBI single in the top of the 1st off Israel Padilla gave the Islanders an early lead, which they stretched to 3-0 in the top of the 4th when Júlio Robles beat the throw to home plate and scored on Cris Espinoza’s bass hit. The Magpies responded immediately, Becker’s triple was followed by Ángel Márquez’s single to make it 3-1.

The Islanders looked in control still, but their lead evaporated in the 7th. Gonzalo Torralda homered for the second straight night to reduce the advantage to 3-2, before back-to-back doubles from Ernesto Solís and pinch hitter Dave Plummer tied the scores at 3-3. The stage was set for a hero to emerge, and who else should it be but that man Becker. He launched himself into a 2-1 fastball from Tallahassee closer Steve Jones, and that was that. The crowd was cheering long before the ball finally cleared the center field bleachers and disappeared onto the streets outside the stadium.

Live: Game three of the Cup Final Series, from Tallahassee, Florida. Oliver John is your host. And now, this.

Preview: The Islanders must make home advantage tell tonight and get the win. A loss, and a 3-0 deficit to a powerful Magpies team, will be a mega mountain to climb. Magpies GM Billy DePodesta sticks to his policy of playing only fully fit starters, meaning that Robert Terry gets the nod over Luis Vélez to start.

2nd inning: Just what they needed! Islanders first baseman Miguel Medina’s RBI single puts them in front.

3rd inning: Terry is pitching well again, but he left one over the middle of the plate and Jason Lewis absolutely crushed it. A superb solo home run! Tallahassee lead 2-0.

5th inning: Pedro Soto smashes a home run to cut the lead to 2-1, but Lewis’s second RBI, a double, re-establishes the Islanders’ 2-run advantage.

7th inning: Ka-boom! Magpies cleanup hitter Ray Parker has been subdued in the Cup Final Series so far, but springs to life with a huge 2-run homer, measured at over 400 feet, to tie the scores. Then Pedro Soto wallops one even further and the Magpies lead 4-3. The Islanders need to make something happen, and fast!

9th inning: Oh. My. Goodness. Ken James’s dog of a postseason continues. He gives up back-to-back home runs to José Hernández and Gabriel Brown, and the Islanders have a walk-off win. The crowd volume is deafening as Brown gets mobbed at home plate. The Magpies still lead in the series, but now it’s 2-1.

Vélez dominates Rattlesnakes to put Magpies on brink of glory

By Maggie Pye | 24 Oct | 68,634 comments

Held back from yesterday’s game to ensure he was fully rested for his start, right-hander Luis Vélez was in sparkling form as he led his team to a narrow victory that puts the Magpies 3-1 up in the Cup Final Series. Manager Johannes Kepler said after the game: “In my view, there is no better pitcher in baseball right now.”

Over 44,000 spectators were packed into the tight confines of a chilly Island Stadium, many of whom arrived a couple of hours before the first pitch. They were treated to fine pitching performances from Vélez and Tallahassee’s young star Francisco Padilla, who was making his second appearance of the series. The Magpies took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, Ángel Márquez’s single bringing home Earl Becker, who had led off the inning with a triple. Tallahassee levelled the score in the fourth when Carlos Rosales’s sac fly scored Hayden Newsome from third base.

The decisive score came in the 7th. Padilla was pulled after giving up a lead-off walk to Becker, but Ernesto Solís’s sac fly off reliever Matt Wright brought Becker round. Vélez eventually left the game after 8 fine innings, concluding with a line of 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Ken James’s 1-2-3 9th inning secured the decisive win.

Live: Welcome to game five of the Cup Final Series. The Magpies lead 3-1, but the Islanders have home-field advantage tonight, and must make it count. Brian Doorknob brings you the action.

Pre-match: For the Islanders, the equation is simple: win or bust. That means they need to beat Magpies starter Tom Hart.

2nd inning: The Magpies start well, opening the scoring on Earl Becker’s solo homer, his 4th of the postseason. But then the crowd are on their feet as it all goes wrong for Hart in the bottom of the inning. 2 walks, 2 singles, a double and a sacrifice fly later, the Islanders lead 4-1. Boy, did they need that!

6th inning: This game is over! Tadamichi Hamada’s RBI double temporarily cuts Tallahassee’s lead to 4-2, but then their lineup jumps on Hart again. Four straight Islanders hitters get on base, and they cash in to the tune of 3 runs. That’s 7-2!

7th inning: Gonzalo Torralda’s solo homer makes it 7-3. Then Ernesto Solís and Bob Ayers get on base and suddenly the Magpies have hope of getting back into it. But Islanders starter José Márquez strikes out Pedro Soto to end the threat.

9th inning: Ángel Márquez’s solo HR is too little, too late for the Magpies. Solís flies out to center field to become the 27th out. Tallahassee win 7-4, and the series is poised at 3-2 as the two teams head back to Iowa to conclude this exciting battle.

Sluggers lead Magpies to superb Cup Final Series triumph

By Maggie Pye | 27 Oct | 145,871 comments

The Magpies are the 2053 State Capitals League Cup Final Series champions! They have beaten the Islanders 8-2 in tonight’s game to take the title for the second consecutive year and the third time in franchise history. General manager Billy DePodesta, who has masterminded all three triumphs, said after the game: “This is a dream come true.”

The team’s fabulous rotation was their driving force during most of the regular season, but the lineup has been transformed since the mid-season arrival of Ray Parker and slugged the Magpies to victory tonight.

Rob Crawford got the ball rolling with a 3-run blast in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Islanders pulled 2 runs back off Israel Padilla in the top of the 4th inning, but two more home runs, both solo shots from Gonzalo Torralda and Pedro Soto in the bottom of the inning, restored the 3-run lead. The Magpies added a further run in the 5th to stretch their lead to 6-2, but finally killed the game off in the 7th. Earl Becker’s 2-run homer, like Crawford and Torralda his 5th of the playoff run, was the crucial hit. Manager Johannes Kepler turned the ball over to homegrown young lefty David Gaines to finish the game. Gaines started this season in the minor league team, but his strikeout of Chung Yang to complete the victory will go down in club folklore.

Magnificent Magpies repeat!
Postseason favourites deliver and bring home franchise’s third SCL crown

By Buster Oldknee, 9:24AM, 28 Oct 2053

The Des Moines Magpies are our SCL Cup Final Series champions for 2053. Their 8-2 victory over plucky challengers Tallahassee means they have retained the title they won last year. It’s the franchise’s third triumph and arguably their best.

The Cup Final Series was certainly more competitive than many pundits had predicted. But after losing the first two games at Iowa Ballpark, the Islanders always faced a steep uphill battle. Their dogged postseason journey finally reached a barrier they could not surmount.

Magpies GM Billy DePodesta lavished praise on his staff and players. “It has been an incredible year, and full credit goes to everyone involved with this team and this organisation. We were starved of success for so many years, but now here we are, the dominant force in the SCL. We’ll have to see if they can do again next year.” Only a handful of watching fans registered that last sentence.

So another SCL season is in the rearview mirror. It will feel like an age until the next one begins.

The Des Moines Telegraph

DES MOINES IN SHOCK AS DEPODESTA ANNOUNCES SURPRISE RESIGNATION

The Magpies organisation and the city of Des Moines were left in shock last night, as news emerged of the unexpected sudden resignation of general manager Billy DePodesta. DePodesta attended a meeting with Magpies owners Chris Rueda and George Sonos yesterday, and the statement announcing the departure of the club’s most successful executive was issued shortly afterwards.

“I have enjoyed every last second of my time at the club”, DePodesta’s statement read. “I was hired to bring this club some long-awaited success, and I feel like I achieved my objective. But we all must recognise when the time comes to move on. I’ve put every drop of energy I’ve got into this job since I walked in the door here. This club gave me my start in the game, and I hope I’ve repaid that faith.

“But now is the time to turn the reins over to a new leader, someone with new energy and new ideas. The club is well set for the future. The roster is strong, the finances are healthy, and the farm system is bulging. I feel confident that further success awaits. I’ll be watching with interesting and cheering them on.”

Magpies fans, who had never seen an SCL trophy victory until DePodesta took the GM role, poured onto social media to pay tribute to their former general manager. We can only echo their sentiments. On behalf of the citizens of Des Moines, we thank you Billy, for everything.

(Extract from “Des Moines Dreams: A History Of The Magpies” by Lewis Michael)

Chapter 20

Billy knew he had nothing left to give. He had led the team to the pinnacle of the sport. Not once, not twice, but three times now. The energy had gone. And the franchise deserved a general manager who would give blood, sweat and tears to the cause. He had once been that man. But no more.

He had arranged to meet Chris and George at the diner just around the corner from the ballpark. It was his favourite eating place in the city, and they ate together their regularly. When he arrived, he could tell that Chris and George knew something was up: they were there early. They were never there early.

Billy felt he owed them the respect of telling them his decision straight out. “I invited you here tonight because I need to tell you something”, he began. “I wish to tender my resignation as general manager of the Des Moines Magpies with immediate effect. It has been the greatest honour and privilege to lead this wonderful organisation, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me this opportunity. I can never fully express the extent of my gratitude. But I need a break, and it is someone else’s turn to deliver our next SCL trophy.”

Chris nodded knowingly and smiled at Billy. “I can tell from the look on your face that we won’t be able to talk you out of it. It’s that decisiveness and clarity of thought that has brought you so much success here, and why we hired you in the first place. I anticipated when I hired you that your time with us might be limited. You’re one of those people who’s always looking for the next challenge, the next mountain to climb. Like everyone else, I was desperate for us to win the Cup Final Series again this season. But I kind of guessed that if we did, one of the consequences might be that you feel you have nothing left to prove here.”

He stood up and offered Billy has hand. “Congratulations, and thank you, Billy. You’ve demonstrated innumerable times that hiring you was the best decision I ever made. You leave with our very best wishes. Before you go, I would like to confirm that you have indeed achieved your objectives in the role. And then some!”

“So, what are you going to do next, young man?” asked George, who had been quiet up to that point.

“I haven’t had a holiday for eight years now. So that’s task number one!” said Billy. “After that, I don’t know. I’ll probably collect together some of my diary notes and some press cuttings, make myself a nice little momento to tell the story of my time here.”

“A noble endeavour”, chuckled Chris. “Something tells me that before long you’ll be looking for that next mountain again, though. I’ll watch the next step in your career with interest.”

That’s all, folks! Thank you for so regularly coming over to this quiet backwater of the forum and reading along, despite the big break in updates at the end of the summer. I hope you enjoyed it.
