Montreal Canadiens (49-29-4) at Buffalo Sabres (48-26-8)
Buffalo leads series 1-0.

Well the old adage is that if your the road team, you need to split the first two games to take away home advantage, and thats what we need to do tonight. Montreal had a terrible night on special teams in game one, giving up 2 SH goals and 2 PP goals.

RW Ronnie Marvin has indicated that he will check the market and become a free agent. The 28 year old has 4 goals, 13 assists for 17 points this year. The two way forward has been splitting time between 3rd and 4th lines for Montreal. Against Buffalo he centered the 3rd line, they were a -1 in game one. Marvin did get some playoff experience in the Habs Cup run in 80-81 where he played in 21 games, had 3 goals and 6 points with 31 PIMs and a +5 rating. Marvin has 22 career NHL goals in 212 career games.

Both Montreal and Buffalo will start the same goalies for game 2. It's Mike Blackshear for Montreal and Aleksey Zhavronkov for Buffalo.

Montreal came out of the gate strong they had 14 shots on goal before Buffalo got their 1st, but Buffalo scored on it. LW Reece Fraser scores at 9:50 of the 1st and its 1-0. Montreal does get it back quickly as C Dave Wright gets his 1st of the playoffs at 10:04 and its 1-1. Montreal continues to put pressure on the Sabres but the period ends 1-1 with the Canadiens out shooting the Sabres 29 to 6.

Montreal goes up 2-1 at 3:03 of the 2nd when C Dave Wright gets his 2nd of the night. But like Montreal's 1st goal, the Sabres answered back quickly at 3:18 when LW Bubba Penn gets his 1st of the playoffs and its now 2-2. The scoring parade continues, Montreal takes a 3-2 lead at 5:01 when RD Marek Bartolcic gets his 1st career playoff goal. Montreal goes up 4-2 at 17:09 of the 2nd, RD Matej Ouhrabka gets his 1st of the playoffs. Montreal gets one more before the end of the 2nd, LD Marc-Andre Berube gets his 1st of the playoffs at 19:34 to make it a 5-2 lead. The shots were 16 to 12 for Montreal. Both teams are 0 for 1 on the PP.

Buffalo closes the gap to 5-3 as LD Jonathan Boily gets his 1st of the playoffs at 3:55. Montreal gets some breathing room back at 11:04 when RW John Herrod gets his 1st of the playoffs to make it 6-3. Montreal does a much better job staying out of the box and on special teams. Both teams were 0 for 2 on the PP, Montreal out shot Buffalo 8 to 3 in the 3rd.

Montreal's C Dave Wright was the 1st star, he had 2 goals and an assist. The 27 year old now has 2 goals and 4 points in 2 playoff games this year. He played 21 games in the Canadiens Cup win in 1980-81. In 23 career playoff games, he has 9 goals, 20 points, 14 PIMs and a +9 rating. Series is tied 1-1.

Buffalo Sabres (48-26-8) at Montreal Canadiens (49-29-4)
Series tied at 1-1.

Montreal comes home to the Bell Center and are tied in the series so mission accomplished in Buffalo. The Canadiens threw pucks at the net like crazy in game 2 and hope to find a way to win in game 3.

RD Matej Ouhrabka is on our top defensive pairing with Yegor Berestnev. Ouhrabka's main role is to play a two way game and he can do a great job of crease clearing. Offensively he is a capable point shooter as well. The birthday boy turned 25 today, had 6 goals in the regular season, he has 28 career goals in 221 NHL games. In the playoffs this year in 2 games he has 1 goal and 1 point. He was part of the Cup winning team in 80-81 and has played in 19 career NHL playoff games, got his 1st goal and has 8 helpers for 9 points. He has a +9 rating in the playoffs.

The goaltenders will be the same for game 3, G Aleksey Zhavronkov is 1-1 in the playoffs with a 3.50 GAA and .916 save %. Montreal's G Mike Blackshear is 1-1 as well with a 4.00 GAA and a .855 save %.

Montreal scores on the 1st shot of the game, RW Yevgeny Ronov scores his 1st career NHL playoff goal at 1:01 to make it 1-0. Montreal makes it 2-0 at 5:34 when LW Batsaikhany Vanoosten gets his 1st of playoffs. Buffalo makes it 2-1 Montreal at 8:48 when LW Anthoni Moreau gets his 1st of the playoffs. Buffalo ties it up at 2 moments later when RW Wilfred Caldwell gets his 2nd of the playoffs at 10:08. So far there are 4 goals on just 8 combined shots. The periiod ends with Montreal out shooting the Sabres 11 to 4.

Buffalo takes a 3-2 lead at 2:49 when LW Anthoni Moreau gets his 2nd of the game. 3 goals on just 5 shots for Buffalo. Montreal makes it a 3-3 game when LW Tom Gaskell scores his 1st career playoff goal at 14:49. The period ends with Montreal out shooting Buffalo 6 to 4 in the period. Both teams are 0 for 1 on the PP so far.

Buffalo goes up 4-3 at 3:26 when RW Wilfred Caldwell scores his 3rd of the playoffs on the PP. Buffalo now has 4 goals on just 10 shots. Montreal poured it on to try to tie it up, but fell short. Montreal out shot the Sabres 14 to 8 in the 3rd period. Buffalo was 1 for 3 on the PP, Montreal was 0 for 3.

Buffalo's LW Anthoni Moreau was the 1st star with 2 goals. The 21 year old is playing in the NHL playoffs for the 1st time, he has 2 goals and 3 points in 3 playoff games. He had 27 goals in his rookie season this year.

Buffalo Sabres (48-26-8) at Montreal Canadiens (49-29-4)
Buffalo leads series 2-1

Montreal are in a must win situation as they do not want to go back to Buffalo down 3-1. Montreal need G Mike Blackshear to step up and be more like the guy that won 16 games and a Cup in the 80-81 season.

LD Ashton Miller is in his rookie season with Montreal and will dress in the playoffs for the 1st time tonight. The 20 year old played in 29 games for Montreal getting a goal and 10 points with a +7 rating. Millers role will be as stay at home defenseman. Montreal drafted him 83rd overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft, he has limited playoff experience, just 3 games with the AHL IceCaps last year.

Buffalo will start G Aleksey Zhavronkov, he is 2-1 with a 3.33 GAA and .912 save %. He is playing his 11 career playoff game. Montreal goes with G Mike Blackshear, he is struggling so far these playoffs with a 1-2 record, a 4.00 GAA and .831 save %.

Montreal dominated the 1st period out shooting Buffalo 20 to 4 but could not beat Zhavronkov. Buffalo was 0 for 2 on the PP while Montreal was 0 for 3, but Buffalo had a 5 minute PP when the very quiet C Chris Hughes got a major for head contact.

Although Montreal was gaining momentum throughout the 2nd period, Buffalo took a 1-0 lead at 8:34 when LW Anthoni Moreau got his 3rd of the playoffs. Shortly after that Moreau got his 2nd of the game, 4th of the playoffs on a PP and its now 2-0 Buffalo. Montreal out shot Buffalo 11 to 4 in the 2nd, but trail 2-0.

Buffalo goes up 3-0 as RD Gabriel Jalbert gets his 2nd of the playoffs on the PP at 4:42. Montreal fans and management sensing that this could be the last home game of the year. Montreal do get on the board, RW Rob Lynch gets his 1st of the playoffs to make it 3-1 at 14:15. The building is rocking when extra attacker Lorenzo Bocci gets his 1st of the playoffs at 19:05 to make it 3-2. Montreal cannot get the equalizer and fall 3-1 in the series. Montreal out shot Buffalo 20 to 9 in the 3rd, Buffalo was 2 for 4 on the PP, Montreal was 0 for 5.

For the 2nd straight game, Buffalo LW Anthoni Moreau was the 1st star with 2 goals. The 21 year old now 4 goals and 5 points in 4 playoff games.

Buffalo 3 Montreal 2
Buffalo leads series 3-1.

Montreal Canadiens (49-29-4) at Buffalo Sabres (48-26-8)
Buffalo leads series 3-1.

Well its do or die for the Canadiens as they must win 3 straight games to continue in the 1982-83 Stanley Cup playoffs. Some concern for Montreal is that the 1st line LW Bocci (-3) C Hughes (-4) and RW Harrod (-4) are a combined -11 with just 2 goals in 4 games.

RD Andrew Rickford became a regular on the defense this season. The 20 year old is currently on the 2nd pairing with Marc-Andre Berube. Primarily a two-way, stay at home defensman Rickford had 5 goals and 22 points in 57 games this season. This is Rickford's rookie season, The 107th overall pick by Montreal also played in 18 games in the AHL this season. So far in 4 games, he has 1 goal and is a +2 in the playoffs.

The goaltending will remain the same for both teams, G Aleksey Zhavronkov is 3-1 with a 3.00 GAA and .927 save % in the playoffs. G Mike Blackshear is 1-3 with a 3.77 GAA and .830 save % in the playoffs this year.

Montreal's RD Andrew Rickford gets his 2nd playoff goal this year at 6:50 to make it 1-0 for Montreal. Montreal goes up 2-0 at 12:15 of the 2nd when LW Al Ladd gets his 1st of the playoffs while on a 4 on 4. Montreal out shot Buffalo 14 to 6 in the first and held most of the momentum.

Buffalo makes it 2-1 at 2:53 of the 2nd when RW Wilfred Caldwell gets his 4th of the playoffs. Buffalo out shot Montreal 14 to 5 in the 2nd period but Montreal holds the lead 2-1.

Buffalo ties up the game 2-2 at 2:22 of the 3rd when RD Gabriel Jalbert gets his 3rd of the playoffs on the PP. Montreal scores a late goal at 18:57 to take a 3-2 lead, LD Marc-Andre Berube gets his 2nd of the playoffs. Montreal holds on for the win and now trail 3 games to 2. Montreal out shot Buffalo 12 to 3 in the 3rd. Montreal was 0 for 3 on the PP and Buffalo was 1 for 4.

Montreal's Marc-Andre Berube was the 1st star, he had a goal and an assist. The 33 year old now has 2 goals and 6 points in 5 playoff games. For his career, Berube has played in 26 NHL playoff games, he has 3 goals and 16 points with a +19 rating.

Buffalo leads series 3-2.

Montreal lives to fight another day and that day is today. G Mike Blackshear was himself and the first line all got a point in the win. Can Montreal force a 7th game?

RW Yevgeny Ronov is a former Sabre and would love to be a deciding factor in a series comeback against Buffalo. Ronov signed with Montreal as a free agent on July 10th, 1982 after splitting the previous season between the NHL Sabres and AHL Americans. This year Ronov had 15 goals and 42 points with an impressive +26 rating. Ronov is part of the 3rd line with LW Vanoosten and C Marvin. And it looks like we got a bug............

After game six Montreal lost the series 4-2, but a game 7 was scheduled anyway. When to last 2 series had a game 7, Montreal and Buffalo played anyway and Montreal won 4-0. Now the playoffs are stuck with all the other series done, but Buffalo and Montreal showing a 1-0 series lead for Montreal.
