Ratings Scale - 2-8 vs 1-100
I see a lot of people using 2-8 over 1-20, in fact wouldn't 1-100 give you a much higher accuracy on the actual ratings?
What are you guys using and why? Just curious as to the logic of why you picked a particular rating scale over another one. |

I wouldn't say higher accuracy, because scouts factor in, but yes, 1-100 gives you a much finer view of a player's abilities.
But that's why I use 2-8 (if I use ratings at all). I want fog of war. |

Ahh ok, you want the challenge. That makes sense. I wouldn't be able to play with anything else than 1-20... for 20 years I've been playing Football Manager and it has the 1-20 scale which I got used to, however I also like 1-100 for finer comparisons.

I've always used 1-20 but oftentimes I found myself too focused on ratings that may or may not be accurate instead of focusing on performance. I thought about doing stats only for a while but it was too difficult to set up. I'm in the middle of simming through 10 years of a fictional league where I'll have potential ratings on a 2-8 scale and current ratings will be hidden. So far just looking from afar I like it though I haven't gotten to any player management yet so we'll see.

As far back as I remember, every sim I have played had rating scales of either 1-100 or 0-99. That is just what I am used to. Only sim series I that I played that didn't use this was Pursue the Pennant/Diamond Mind Baseball that had ratings like Ex, Vg, G, Fr and Pr. Just a creature of habit. No other reason.

I use 1-5 in order to fog up the fine differences seen in 1-100. I don't use scouts.

Not as hardcore as stats only. The game is much tougher to dominate.

I used and loved 1-100 for a long, long time. Even in other games. Eventually, I got tired of it. Needed more of a challenge. Went to 1-10+ for a couple of seasons, then to 2-8. I found I was too hung up on a guy that was 75/100 over a guy that was 74/100.

I use 1-100, it's much easier to go "50 is average, 75 is super, 90 is a star" as opposed to 20/80 where a 60 is "75", etc...

For my personal games I use 20-80. At times, I've adopted other scales for my dynasty reports based on what I see a lot of people use just to have things have a "common base" -- but I think I'm going to stop doing that.
I've also looked into "stats only" but I've got to read more on it. I always use a full scouting system, so... Here's a really good article from BaseballNewsHound... a lot of why I use the 20-80 scale is dictated in there. The Scouting Encyclopedia

My favorite is still 1-10. Decent fog of war and easy to understand at a glance. The only one I'd ever potentially switch to would be 1-5.

I used to use 1-10, but 2-8 is the best fit for me. Like others, I need to have that 'fog of war'. 1-100 feels like cheating to me.

2 - Terrible 3 - Poor 4 - Sub-Par 5 - Average 6 - Good 7 - Great 8 - Outstanding 1-100 muddles that up with needless distinctions between, say, 71 and 75. They're both good, what's 4 points of difference, right? But like Rizon said above, I tend to get hung up on that minor difference and see Mr. 75 as being head and shoulders above Mr. 71, when in reality, both players would be pretty much the same. |

Another reason why I prefer the small scales is that it makes viewing things in the game much nicer. When you're creating a custom view that has a dozen or more ratings on it, it sure is nice to only be looking at single digits. Double digits can get very busy, and very cluttered in a hurry.
