Trade News

10/28 The Boston Braves sent 28 year old 2B Jim Lefebvre and 18 year old SS Sergio Manuel to the Philadelphia Athletics for 34 year old CF Robin Yount. Yount hit .291 12 HR's and 50 RBI's in 137 games while Lefebvre hit 278 with 4 HR's and 17 RBI's in 30 games of a late season call up.

10/29 St Louis Browns send 28 year old SS Melvin Mora to the Cincinnati Reds for 25 year old RP Martin Glendon and 22 year old P prospect Manny Rodriguez. This deal essentially moves Mora back to the Reds where he was at the start of the season before being dealt to St Louis with Jose Chavez, for SP Charlie McDaniel.

Trades, signings and off season stuff through the winter meetings

11/8 The New York Giants and Boston Braves made a pretty big trade today. Giants send 25 year old OF Mike D Young (acquired from the Cardinals and hit a combined .265-26-92 in 139 games, 12-37 in 70 games with STL and 14-55 in 69 games with NY) to Boston for 35 year old journeyman C Mike A Gonzalez and 24 year old 2B Ruben Rodriguez, a 3.5 star prospect.

11/8 The A's trade 29 year old Warren Cromartie (.286-11-88) to the White Sox for 30 year old RP Johnny Murphy and 24 year old OF prospect Juan Gutierrez. Murphy was 2-2 3 Saves 3.81 in 49 games over 52 IP. Gutierrez is a 3.5 star OF prospect who can run and defend.

11/11 The New York Giants send 33 year old Myron Allen (.364-3-14 as a pinch hitter in 70 games) to the World Champion Tigers for 26 year old minor league C Justin Phillips and 24 year old minor league reliever Bill Gould. Both prospects are potential 4 star guys.

11/14 NL Champion Cincinnati sent 28 year old Russ Derry to the St Louis Cardinals for 23 year old CF Earl Naylor and 30 year old 2B Bill Stein. Stein hit .305-5-23 in 61 games for Cincy while Derry hit .277-15-42 in 103 games for the Cardinals.

11/16 The Brooklyn Dodgers sent 31 year old OF Matt Lawton to Philadelphia for 27 year old SP Bill H James. Lawton hit .266-14-53 for Brooklyn while James was 4-9 4.64 in 13 starts for the Phillies. James missed the last few months of the season with elbow and shoulder issues.

11/23 The Boston Braves sent 39 year old Closer Joe A Berry and 22 year old OF Jose Santiago to the Cardinals for 31 year old Brant Blake. Berry was 4-9 22 Saves 3.78 in 48 games for Boston.

WINTER MEETINGS
11/28 The Boston Braves have dealt 28 year old Scott Podsednik to the Chicago White Sox for 27 year old RP Willlie Blair and 19 year old P prospect Bobby Martin. Podsednik hit .286 6 HR's 60 RBI's in 151 games between the New York Giants and Boston Braves last year, leading the NL in SB with 21. Blair is 2-3 5.04 ERA in 45 games with Chicago. The White Sox will now feature a top 3 in their lineup of Podsednik, Ray Durham and Jacoby Ellsbury.

FREE AGENT SIGNINGS
12/7 The New York Giants managed to retain one of their own. Signing 30 year old Hugh Duffy (.311-9-83) to a 3 year 111,600 dollar deal, with a player option for the '54 season at 37.2K.

TRADE NEWS
12/8 Brooklynhas traded CF Torii Hunter to the New York Yankees for 22 year old minor league 2B Juan Lozano and 27 year old SP Jim Owens. Hunter hit .228-3-23 in 87 games this year while Owens was a combined 10-14 4.17 in 39 games, 26 starts with the Braves and Yankees last season.


12/12 The World Champs dealt a piece of their rotation away today. Sending 26 year old Erskine Mayer to the St Louis Browns for 25 year old 1B Russell Knox and 24 year old RP Edgar Fernandez. Mayer went 11-14 between Brooklyn and Detroit in helping the Tigers win the 1950 World Series. Knox and Fernandez are both 4 star prospects according to the MLB scouting bureau.

FREE AGENT SIGNING
12/16 Slugger Cliff Johnson (.274-30-89 with the Cubs in '50) settled on a 1 year 32,000 dollar deal from the Indians for the 1951 season. The 35 year old figures to hit 5th in their lineup, providing protection for the 3-4 combo of Aaron and Agee.

12/24 Tiger OF Gavvy Cravath, who hit .273-17-68, has decided to help the 'other guys' out. Today signing a deal with the team he helped beat in the series, the Cincinnati Reds. The 36 year old signed a 2 year 116,000 dollar deal with a vesting plate appearance option of 520. Cravvath is expected to play RF and hit 4th for the Reds, between Jimmy Walsh (335-36-107) and John E Briggs (309-30-101).

12/29 The Boston Braves have sent 27 year old 1B Brad Wilkerson to Cincinnati, along with 19 year old 2B Bobby Martin, for 29 year old Ivan Goodman. Wilkerson hit .262-17-62 for the Braves while the 29 year old Goodman hit .312-16-61 in 132 games.

Pre Spring Training activity..

1/16/51 The World Champion Tigers took a step towards defending that title by inking superstar OF 30 year old Von Hayes to a 6 year 384K contract. Hayes hit .302-28-92 in 136 games for the White Sox in 1950. The deal will pay him 64,000 a year through 1955 with a player option of 64k for the 1956 season.

1/16/51 The Cardinals have dealt SS John Rainey (.261-4-31 in '50) and 23 year old P prospect Jesus Gonzalez to the Boston Braves for 27 year old OF Chief Wilson. Wilson hit .319-5-10 in 20 games with the Braves after missing the seasons first 4 months with a torn labrum. Wilson will move into the Cardinals cleanup spot behind 21 year old slugging 1B Ike Davis, and ahead of 27 year old catcher Lance Parrish who slugged 38 HR's last year.

2/17 The Tigers continued their free spending ways, this time adding 33 year old SP Bucky Walters for a 4 year deal that will pay him 44,800 a year. Walters went 16-13 4.02 in 39 starts for the Dodgers last season.

Heading into camp, and off season summary..

Of who got better, and who got worse. Feels very much like the have's and have nots as the 2 world series contenders appeared to also be the 2 teams that got better than everyone else, but Detroit by a landslide over everyone else.

1951 Sprint Training happenings...

3/22 Cleveland will be without SS Jimmy Dykes for 3 months with a fractured leg.

3/23 Chicago White Sox will be without SP Lady Baldwin for 3-4 months with a torn triceps.

4/11 Philadelphia A's will be without SP Wayne Lemaster for 4-5 months. The 31 year old (11-11 3.56 '50) suffered a rotator cuff injury.

Standings and Players. A 3 team race, nice, I expect Detroit to crush this league but also Cleveland with Aaron and that lineup, could be awesome.

1951 Season opens, first few weeks.

4/17 J.R Richard opened Detroit's title defense with a 1-0 opening day 5 hitter vs. Cleveland. An Andrew McCutcheon 3rd inning sac fly was all the scoring as Richard went 9-5-0-0-2-3 and loser Curt Schilling (0-1) went 8-5-1-1-2-4 in a complete game loss.

4/19 Clevelands Ryan Bowen returned the favor 2 days later, tossing a 2 hitter over Detroit going 9-2-0-0-1-4.

4/21 Chicago Cubs SP Sidney Ponson will miss the next 5 months after being diagnosed with a torn rotator. Ponson was 18-9 4.16 last season for Chicago.

4/21 21 year old ace in the making Bert Inks, of the Phillies, will miss the next year after having ulnar collateral replacement surgery yesterday.

5/2 Cleveland's Curt Schilling tossed a 5 hitter, striking out 10, in a 5-0 win over the Red Sox. Bob Rhoads tossed a 5 hitter as well, leading Detroit to a 10-0 win over the A's.

5/4 Rube Oldring went 2-5 to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.

5/5 Pedro Martinez (PIT) tossed a 4-hitter to beat the Giants 3-0.

5/6 NYG 3B Willie Greene will miss the next 3-4 weeks with plantar fascitis. Terry Larkin (A's) shut out the White Sox 3-0 on a 2-hitter. Perry Werden (CHI) shut out the Phillies 5-0 on a 5-hitter. Rube Oldring's 22 game hitting streak was stopped.

6/1 Pittsburgh will be without slugger Sam Thompson for at least June, and likely early July. The 36 year old broke his finger in a game today.

6/1 Terry Larkin (PHI) tossed his 4th shutout of the '51 season with a 5-0 1 hitter over the White Sox.

6/2 The Red Sox lost RP Don Kirkwood for the season with a torn labrum. The 29 year old was 1-0 4.78 in 18 games.

7/2 TRADE NEWS In a pretty big deal Cleveland sent 31 year old 3B and gold glover Frank Malzone to the Yankees for 29 year old reliever Bill Chappelle (1-2 3 Saves 1.78 in 18 appearances) and 21 year old IF prospect Ryan Wells. Chappelle moves into the Indians pen and Malzone will start against LHP for the Yanks for now.

7/4 Bob Stanley, the Cubs Closer is asking out of Chicago. The 32 year old is 1-1 3 Saves 3.86 in 24 games after a 6-4 19 Save 3.22 '50 season. George Winter (WAS) shut out the Yankees 4-0 today.

7/5 The New York Giants lost 24 year old SP Pat Combs for the year with a torn UCL. He was 6-7 2.85 in 17 starts this year.

7/5 TRADE NEWS The New York Giants sent OF Wally Berger to the St Louis Cardinals for 21 year old 3B Drake Owens and 19 year old 1B Buck Jordan. The 32 year old Berger hit a combined (between the Braves and Cards last year) .311-16-60 in 116 games last year, and was hitting .328-6-18 in 38 games this season.

7/6 Cards prospect and #1 pick (5th overall) Michael Pineda tossed a 3 hitter yesterday in AA, and is 3-5 2.39 after a brief 0-3 6.15 call up to the big club.

7/7 Leon Roberts, Yankees RF, will miss the remainder of the season after he suffered a ruptured disc. The 24 year old was hitting .326-6-31 in 47 games.

7/7 Bill Steen (BRA) threw a 3-0 shutout over the Giants, yielding just 2 hits. He's 10-7 2.45 on the year.

7/7 TRADE NEWS Boston Red Sox send 26 year old RP Jim Brosnan (8-6 20 Saves in Boston last 2 seasons) to the Yankees for 24 year old IF prospect Sam LaRocque and 23 year old IF prospect Wendell Harris.

7/8 The Chicago Cubs will be without MLB's highest paid player for the next 5-6 weeks as CF Bernie Williams injured his shoulder. The 31 year old is hitting .305-7-41 after a .304-18-80 1950 season.

7/8 TRADE NEWS The Yankees have sent 26 year old Catcher Johnny Blanchard and 23 year old IF Herb McKenzie to the A's for 26 year old OF prospect Lenny Green. Blanchard hit .209-10-30 in 278 AB's last year, and was hitting .270-7-38 in 215 AB's this year. Blanchard will be the A's primary Catcher now, and Green will take over in CF for NY and hit leadoff.

7/8 Cubs 20 year old SP Bill Burbach tossed a 1-hitter at the Reds today, moving to 2-6 5.52 on the season. Christy Mathewson (PHI) the 18 year old phenom threw a 2 hit 5-0 shutout in Brooklyn today. Mathewson is 7-12 3.40 on the year in 21 starts.

July, the race and OH MY the trades!

7/13 Chris R Young (CLE) tossed a 6 hitter vs the Yankees in a 3-0 win. Reggie Smith (STLB) is finally healthy,and playing. He went 5-6 with 6 RBI's in a 17-15 win over the A's today.

7/15 Warren Cromartie (CWS) went 1-4 to extend his streak to 20 straight games with a hit. Newly acquired Bob Muncrief (PHI) tossed a 6 hitter, beating the Cardinals today.

WEEK 13 AL POTW-Reggie Smith (STLB) 6-16 3 HR's 8 RBI's (.239-10-49)
WEEK 13 NL POTW-Juan Samuel (CHI) 11-26 2 HR's 3 RBI's (.278-14-47)

7/16 Indians #2 pick Jorge Posada won the Short Season PotW this week and is hitting .374-8-25 in 27 games. Erskine Mayer (STLB) has taken to his new team, tossing a 6 hitter over the Red Sox for a 1-0 win to move to 4-1 3.33 since the trade.

7/18 Archie Stimmel (CWS) tossed a 6 hitter to beat the Yankees and move to 9-9 3.80 on the year. Claude Richey (NYG) went 5-6 in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs today.

7/18 TRADE NEWS Bob Stanley finally got his trade today. The 32 year old was sent from Cubs sent him to Brooklyn for 22 year old 2B Norbert Tate and 27 year old LF Alex Gordon. Stanley was 1-1 3 Saves and a 3,72 on the year while Gordon was hitting .304-6-25 for the Dodgers.

7/18 TRADE NEWS The Cubs traded 36 year old RP Darren Holmes to the Yankees for 21 year old P prospect Dick Donovan and 20 year old IF Enrique Rojas. Holmes was 3-2 6 Saves 4.18 in 43 appearancess.

7/19 Red Ames (NYY) shut out the White Sox on 4 hits in a 1-0 win. Ames is 13-10 2.47 on the year. Mike LaCoss (PIT) beat the Dodgers 10-0 to move to 4-5 3 Saves and a 4.23 ERA.

7/19 TRADE NEWS The Yankees have sent 31 year old Damaso Marte, reliever, and 18 year old IF John Cote to the Cubs for 25 year old OF Guy Zinn. Zinn hit .283-13-51 last year for the Cubs and was hitting .298-9-37 in 75 games this year. Marte was 0-5 with 9 Saves and a 3.54 ERA in 44 games this year after a 3-6 19 Save 4.31 1950 season with New York. Zin will move into the Yanks 3 hole vs RHP and play RF.

7/20 Brooklyn RF J.D. Drew will miss the next 3-4 weeks with a bad shoulder. He was hitting .277-14-48 after his monster .354-31-95 '50 season.

7/20 Steve Rogers (NYG) tossed a 3 hitter in a 4-0 win over Cincy today to move to 11-9 3.90. Warren Cromartie had his 23 game hitting streak end in a 4-3 loss to Washington.

7/21 Cole Hamels (STL) shut out Brooklyn on 4 hits with 3 K's in a 2-0 win.

7/24 HUGE TRADE NEWS!-The Pittsburgh Pirates have shipped 26 year old All Star 3B Scott Rolen, 24 year old IF Barton Davila and 19 year old OF prospect Denny Palmer to the New York Yankees for 25 year old All Star Pitcher Roscoe Miller and 22 year old 1B Vincente Gonzalez. Rolen, the NL Gold Glove winner last season and 1951 NL All Star was hitting .284-22-75 this year while Miller, a 2 time All Star was 12-5 2.38 and leading the AL in ERA. Miller was 22-9 3.26 in 1950, in 38 starts. Rolen will play 3rd and hit 4th for the Yanks while Miller will slide in behind 15-6 Pedro Martinez in the Pirate rotation. The Bucs are 58-44, a 1/2 game in front of Cincinnati in the NL.

7/24 TRADE NEWS The St Louis Cardinals have traded 29 year old Closer Jeff Reardon to the cross town St Louis Browns for 19 year old OF Prospect Luis Perez.

AND! In a 2nd trade between the same two teams, the Cardinals have sent 28 year old slugger Lance Parrish to the Browns for 24 year old RP Bill Meehan and 18 year old SS Orlando Cantu, and 19 year old OF Ken Cooper. Parrish hit 38 HR's and drove in 116 last year, and was hitting .258-18-62 so far this year.

7/25 Brooklyn OF Adam Lind went 5-6 in a 11-8 win over the Cubs today. Lind is hitting .375-2-9 in 36 games off the bench this year.

7/25 TRADE NEWS The St Louis Browns make yet another trade, this time sending SP Bob Muncrief (7-11 4.79 in 24 starts) to the Phillies for 20 year old IF John Meade.

7/25 HUGE TRADE NEWS And in what appears to be a complete make over, the St Louis Browns made yet another trade. Sending 21 year old OF Paul Fletcher, 24 year old P prospect Lee Hunter, 20 year old OF Evan Barnes, 23 year old C Dave Whitfield and 20 year old 2B Pedro Barrera to the Cardinals and receiving All Star 1B Jeff Bagwell in return. Bagwell hit .330-28-90 last year and was hitting .271-3-15 in 64 games a part time role after Ike Davis had taken the Cardinals 1B job. Bagwell adds to a now explosive Browns lineup that features Ian Kinsler, Bobby Bonds, Dwight Smith and newly acquired Lance Parrish.

7/26 Bill Wise (CHI) tossed a 2-0 3-hitter over the Dodgers today. He's 11-8 3.73 on the year.

7/27 TRADE NEWS The St Louis Browns continued to completely overhaul their team, sending 24 year old P prospect Phillip Robinson to the White Sox for 28 year old SP Archie Stimmel. Stimmel was 9-9 3.80 in 22 starts for Chicago this season.

7/27 TRADE NEWS The White Sox then sent 27 year old RP Adrian Nelson to the Phillies for 17 year old C prospect Doc Bushong and 24 year old C prospect Matt Jones. Nelson

7/28 Max Butcher (STL) tossed a 4-hitter in a 1-0 win over Brooklyn today to move to 6-7 3.98.

7/28 TRADE NEWS The Phillies dealt 28 year old SP Fred Burchell to the Senators for 22 year old OF Gene Hermanski and 21 year old IF prospect Bruce Spencer. Burchell was 5-7 4.26 in 16 starts for the Phillies this year.
