OOTP on Steam? A Moral Story.
Listen to my tale of woe with a silver lining.
Last year, Cablevision installed a new buried Internet/TV cable from the curb box to the house. That was after several weeks of having the cable running above ground and mowing around it. OK, it was worth waiting for, providing a strong and reliable signal. A day or two before Hurricane / Tropical Storm Irene hits here (Long Island), my electrical line fails. I am EXTREMELY LUCKY that this happened BEFORE the storm because, being a single house problem, it might have taken weeks for them to get to it after the storm. The pre-storm electrical repair guy spliced us into the power line of the house next door. Both meters on the ground, dormant! Hooray! (Though I bet dollars to doughnuts that they come up with a way to bill us anyway). Storm comes, winds blow, trees sway, limbs fall, power goes out for hundreds of thousands for a week or more. Yet we have power the whole time. Finally, last Thursday, the electric company comes to install a new power line to our house. Dig they must, right through our Internet/TV cable. No Internet, no TV, for THREE AND A HALF DAYS. Several long conversations with the wife, however. My reaction: "It's all right, I guess, but I wouldn't want to do it all the time." At about this time, moderators are saying to themselves "What the heck does this have to do with OOTP?" I'm getting to that. Kindly forbear from punitive action. My point goes back to this thread: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ely-steam.html Specifically when I said this in the final posting: Quote:
Cable just having been restored late this Sunday afternoon, I reflect back on these harrowing days. Internet? NO. TV? NO. OOTP Baseball? YES, because it resides on my PC and does not require Internet access to play (aside from an occasional license check over the Internet). My sanity preserved! (Conversations with the wife notwithstanding.) |

If OOTP was on Steam and the internet goes out, then you can run Steam in offline mode and would still be able to play said OOTP game.
Thus rendering this entire thread pointless. |

Just keep Steam in offline mode until you are ready for updates.

I have 223 games on Steam, offline mode works like a charm. Enjoyed gaming during internet outages and whatnot.

I'm quite addicted to it, hence all the games I own. Their sales and packages are really addicting. I think I bought my first version of OOTP through Steam, but I've been buying it right from the site here since.

You need to be online in order to go into offline mode.

I used to be 1998 Yankees. Aside from my forum name, a lot has changed since I started this thread over four years ago.
Let me just say these two things:
I'm NOT saying that I want OOTPB to be exclusively on Steam. I prefer downloading the game from OOTPD. It's just that I am no where near as angry and adamant on this topic as I was four years ago in this thread. * The purchase has to be recent and you cannot have played the game too long; both are reasonable conditions for receiving a refund.

I really don't play any games besides OOTP except for The Sims 4, so Steam is kind of a pointless waste of space for me. But I had it at one point, and didn't have any issues with it. Other folks' mileage may vary, I guess.

Yes, I guess what I was worried about four years ago was service and continuity. Well, little by little they have impressed me with their service and, four years later, the concern about continuity seems less important than ever.

How are the caves standing up to bigger fires in your increasingly modern world?

It's remarkable that I have had any time to play my 30 Steam games!
