Developmental Minor Leagues
How many players do you typically keep within each developmental league roster?
This would be the three leagues below Short Season A. With each draft, 35 additional players are added to the lowest level and cause playing time issues. Prospects I would rather see play and develop miss significant playing time in an already short season. |

before i place draftees, i look into promotions/demotions. also, the college kids can usually go in short-a and sometimes a-ball right away. once i get all the 'better' talent situated, i'll place the newly drafted. only after everything is situated i will cut players, if needed. alwys have an eye to future - never short-suit yourself on the rosters. playing time can be influnced by using the play higher potential regardless of ratings setting. you can also 'force start' players in the player strategy page. editing depth charts is another way. so, even if you have 4 SS, you can keep them. especially if 2 of them are good prospects and will be moving on shortly. that way at midseason after they are promoted you are not short on SS. |

I'll keep 25 players on two rosters and 50 on the third (to account for the inevitable injuries). I'll release the lowest-potential players I have to make space.

I appreciate the insight. A few different strategies here to think about.

I usually tend to go with six starting pitchers at every minor league level (using the six man rotation), as well as usually seven relievers, and one closer. Of the seven relief pitchers, I will stash a starter who will serve as a spot/emergency starter. Usually, I will rotate my starters in and out of the rotation.
Watch closely how often your relievers pitch. If you sim several games without checking, it seems that the same three or four relievers are used over and over. You will wind up with two or three relievers who might only pitch a couple innings a month. I change the settings "use more often" and "use less often" frequently to keep innings fairly balanced Position players, I usually keep two for every position. Occasionally, I might keep a third catcher. Higher rating players usually get more playing time, but I have had players with lower ratings put up superior numbers It takes a lot of time to do rosters and make roster adjustments, but in the end, you have a better grasp on players to keep and players to cut/trade. |
