Yesterday was Joe Abram's 27th birthday!

Also yesterday, we sent SP Leon Hermosillo (25-L) back to Daytona Beach (A) and recalled SP Cody Jacobus (29-L).

We are back home for the next two weeks! The Charlotte Hornets are here to play a 2 game set. They were swept in 4 games at home by the lowly Providence Steamrollers over the weekend. We are 3-2 against them on the season and this is their first trip to Jacksonville. They are tied for 9th in scoring with 4.03 runs per game (Jacksonville is #12 with 3.83). The Hornets are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.08 per game (Jacksonville is #4 with 3.81). Their run differential is -3 and ours is +1.

Charlotte Hornets (30-32 .484 6.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (31-32 .492 6 GB tied for 3rd place in the Southern Division)

CHAR: Dusty Peer (26-L 4-6 3.51 ERA 95 IP, 93 H, 5 HR, 21 BB, 43 SO) vs.
JAX: Eddie Basset (30-R 2-0 3.20 ERA 19.2 IP, 21 H, 1 HR, 4 BB, 5 SO)

Basset allowed 8 hits and no walks in CG shutout in his last start.

Peer gave up 2 hits and 1 unearned run in 7 IP last time out, but that was enough to get him a loss. We have faced him once this year and beat him, scoring 4 runs in 6 IP.

The Orlando Juice are in town to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just shut out the Robins in Richmond on Tuesday. It appears to have been then only game of the series scheduled. I can find no record of another game being rained out. We won 3 of 4 in Orlando, May 17-20. The y are 15th in scoring with 3.66 runs per game (Jacksonville is #12 with 3.82). They are last with 24 HR and we are 2nd to last with 26. Everyone else has at least 32 and 6 teams have more HR than us and Orlando combined. The Juice are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.33 per game (Jacksonville is #4 with 3.85). Their run differential is -43, worst in the South and 2nd worst in the League. Ours is -2.

Orlando Juice (24-40 .375 13 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) at

Down on the Farm: The Daytona Beach Islanders (A) won at Montgomery, 5 to 4, to end a 12 game losing streak. No one down there is doing much of anything good, except RP Adrian Myers (22-L), who has an 0.47 ERA in 38.2 IP with only 18 H, 1 HR and 51 SO, but has walked 26.

SP Josh Spence (24-L), the #2 prospect this Spring, has healed up and it is time to work out a trade for him, because I am afraid he is injury prone and will not be worth much in the long run. I was hoping we would get enough interest in him that we could get something useful in return. There was a lot of interest in acquiring him, but not a lot of interest in giving up good players to do so...

Trade #14

SP Josh Spence (24-L) to Birmingham for RP Cody Shaw (27-L).

Shaw has a 2.27 ERA in 31.2 IP with 21 H, 2 HR, 13 BB and 22 SO. He has started 2 games. He can hit 100 MPH on the radar gun with consistency and keeps the ball low in the zone, but his control has been a problem in the past.

Now, acquiring Shaw means we have 3 lefties in our Pen and no one who should be sent to the minors, because they are all doing fairly well, so we had to make another trade to make room:

Trade #15
RP Jose Rubio (32-L) to Columbus for RP Josh Rigby (30-R)

There was not much interest in Rubio, even though he was probably going to be the only Jay to make the All-Star team this year. Rigby used to be a lot better than he has been this season. He is making $352,000.

And acquiring Rigby makes Billy Boone superfluous, so....

Trade #16

RP Billy Boone (38-R) to Buffalo for RP Todd Lum (30-R).

Lum has a 5.66 ERA and is out of options. He will be waived and designated for assignment. He is not much, but he is better than any reliever we currently have in Dayton Beach (A), other than Adrian Myers (22-L), the #10 prospect.

Editor's Note:
These were all of the 'shop and take a player at random' variety of trades and I am not very happy with any of them. The Bullpen was the one area of the team that was above average and did not need reinforcements, at least for this year. The Bullpen WAS very old, and these trades make it more viable for future seasons, but I would have much rather gotten a starting pitcher or a hitter for Josh Spence.

The Ottawa Otters are here to finish out this miserable home stand with a 4 game series through the weekend. They just won a pair of games at home against Buffalo. This is our first meeting with them. They are 14th in scoring with 3.69 runs per game (Jacksonville is #13 with 3.75). How we have scored more runs than they have is a mystery, since we both have the same BA (.248), but they have a lot more HR and BB. The Otters are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.61 per game (Jacksonville is #8 with 4.03). Their run differential is +5 and ours is -20, 13th worst in the League.

CF Kaleb Diehl (remember him?) is finally ready to play.

Ottawa Otters (34-36 .486 8 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (32-39 .451 9 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division)

OTT: Alex Medina (23-L 2-0 2.22 ERA 28.1 IP, 29 H, 1 HR, 5 BB, 20 SO) vs.
JAX: Joe Abram (27-R 2-2 3.99 ERA 47.1 IP, 49 H, 4 HR, 13 BB, 22 SO)

With Wiley Ruffo (33-L) out for the season, Medina has been installed as their #1 starter. This will only be his 5th career start. He was the #1 prospect this Spring. He gave up 1 run in 6 IP last time out in a no decision and pitched a 7 hit shutout the time before that.

Abram gave up 4 runs in 7.2 IP in a no decision last time out.

We put CF Kaleb Diehl (28-L) on the DL and recalled CF Jeremy Herman (22-L) from Daytona Beach (A). Herman has only hit .259 with a .646 OPS since being sent down, but no one down there is hitting much.

Ottawa Otters (35-37 .486 8 GB in 6th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (33-40 .452 9 GB tied for 6th place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Cody Jacobus (29-L 1-1 4.56 ERA 25.2 IP, 26 H, 4 HR, 13 BB, 9 SO)

Murphy gave up 2 runs in 6 IP last time out in a no decision. He is the 4th straight lefty we have faced.

Jacobus gave up 6 runs (4 earned), in 1+ innings last time out in a loss. If he gets shelled again, we will send him back to Daytona Beach (A), but there is no one else who is an obvious choice to replace him.

SP Cody Jacobus (29-L) was sent back to Daytona Beach (A). SP Dale Gerace (27-R) was called up. We do not have a lot of confidence that he will do much better than Jacobus. He was 7-6 with a 2.87 ERA for the Islanders.

We are in Louisville to play the Colonels a 2 game set. They just lost a pair of games in Orlando after winning 5 in a row before that. We are 2-2 against them on the season and this is our first trip to the Bluegrass. They are 14th in scoring with 3.71 runs per game (Jacksonville is #13 with 3.74). We have scored 6 more runs than they have, but have played 1 more game. The Colonels are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.50 per game (Jacksonville is #7 with 4.03). They have allowed the fewest HR, by far (27). 2nd best Richmond has allowed 37. We have allowed 59, tied for 10th best (and it is getting worse all the time). Their run differential is +16 and ours is -22.

Jacksonville Jays (35-42 .455 9 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at

LOU: Chris Tyler (31-R 7-5 3.80 ERA 111.1 IP, 108 H, 6 HR, 40 BB, 50 SO)

Basset gave up 3 runs in 7 IP last time out in a no decision.

Tyler has won 6 of his last 7 starts and the only one he did not win, he left the game after getting 2 outs in the first inning with an injury. He gave up 1 run in a CG win last time out. He has pitched 51 innings in those 6 wins with a 2.29 ERA. He is 1-1 against us this season with 1 very good game and one decent game.
