1972-1973 Season Review

The WHA arrives. Pro Hockey now has 32 franchises with 18 in the NHL and 14 in the WHA.

The NHL allows the WHA to play for the Stanley Cup in hopes of embarrassing them. They play in self-contained separate conferences only meeting in the final.

Boston and Kansas face off and Boston wins 4 games to 1.

Pittsburgh's Mike England sets a new points record at 112.

26 year Winnipeg Jets defenceman Robert Kraus wins D-man of the year and rookie of they year scoring 80 points tying a rookie record.

and thus, the hockey wars has begun.

(insert star wars music here)

actually surprised that Kansas city became the inaugural WHA champs. what arenas do the WHA teams play, and what's their attendance figures?

I like the second option. But here are my revisions:

New England (Boston later Hartford)
Atlanta
Orlando
Miami (Replaces Ottawa)
Quebec
New York

Winnipeg
Houston
Los Angeles
Calgary
Alberta (Edmonton)
Seattle

i'd love Houston. possibly as a WHA expansion. however, I don't want too many teams either...would be interesting to see what we can do come merger time.

We're at 32 teams now and the max is 36. So during the WHA wars we can expand by 4 more then vote who survives the merger?

1974 NHL or WHA expansion

VOTE

1. Should we expand by 2 teams? If so is it NHL or WHA?

2. Candidates:

Houston - had a WHA team in 72 almost in 6 team merger with NHL that fell through.

Cincinnati - Was passed over in 74 NHL expansion but "promised" they would be in for 76. That never happened so went to the WHA in 75 and was almost in with Houston in 6 team merger.

Indianapolis - Indy almost had the Seals in 74 but the NHL nixed the deal. Had an WHA team as of 74. Where Gretzky started as a pro - ruining his chance at NHL rookie records.

Dallas - Applied in 74 to NHL

Phoenix - Applied in 74 and was seriously considered. Went to WHA in 74

Portland - never applied to either league but was a strong team in the WHL.

Orlando - just because nemolee threw them in his WHA suggestion.

why not both leagues getting 2 more teams?

as for who...man, that's a tough call...i definitely want a team in the West and a team in the east...

- definitely put Houston in the WHA. they are one of the iconic teams of this league.

-portland for the NHL...though, honestly, I don't think there was an adequate arena ready in this time period...do you want to wait until the MODA center gets build in 1995?

-as for cinci and Indy, I'm torn...ideally, I want both of then in the WHA, but, since you specifically said 2 teams, I dunno which one of them ends up in which league...

If both leagues get 2 teams now we max out at 36 teams

Can I jump in on this? Great idea by the way, loved catching up through it.

I would like to see Houston & Cincinatti get teams...probably to the WHA

The two cities with the best chance are Houston and Pheniox. I don't see Indianapolis hosting a pro hockey team.

Houston joins the WHA. Phoenix joined the NHL. Cleveland moves to the WHA and Winnipeg moves to NHL.

Also! Baltimore and Hartford switch leagues.

1973-1974 Season Review

Boston and LA topped the NHL divisions and Miami and KC topped the WHA divisions.

Boston again defeats KC in the final

Steve Hart of Cleveland is the all-time leader in wins (385) and shut outs (37)

Kirby Myers of KC sets a record for goals (61) and points (127) is a season. NHL old-timers note he played exclusively against WHA competition.

1974-1975 Season Review

Philly and Vancouver topped the NHL Divisions

Milwaukee and Colorado topped the WHA divisions.

Boston have won their 3rd straight cup and 8th overall, defeating Milwaukee.

San Diego in its 3 years of existence has never won more than 10 games in a season. Attendance has dropped to 9,605 a game only edging out Hartford.

Winnipeg ROOKIE Jessy Lamoureux set a new point record at 134 points and new rookie records of 55 goals, 79 assists and 134 points. He won MVP and Rookie of the Year.

Is he a super-star or a fluke playing in the weaker WHA?

Charlie Sheppard of Vancouver set a new Assist record at 91.

Tommaso Botticelli who formerly set a number of goalie futility records in his rookie season with Buffalo (1 win 38 losses, 5.67 GAA in 1970-1971) has won Goalie of the year with Milwaukee and took his team to the cup final.

1976 EXPANSION

This will bring us to a maximum of 36 teams.

Candidates:

Cincinnati - Home of the Stingers and almost home to the NHL twice

Phoenix - Home to the WHA Roadrunners and future home of the Coyotes

Birmingham - Home to a new 16,000 seat hockey arena and home to a WHA franchise

Portland - Long running WHL team, never an NHL or WHA city.

Dallas - had actually applied for the 74 NHL expansion but didn't apply again for 1976. Future home of the NHL.

hey have you ever thought of adding custom players? for example the people who follow along could create a rookie for an upcoming draft and see how their careers unfold? just a thought that i would be interested in joining!

edit: also i vote for portland and dallas
