Dynasty: The Islanders

Version 2.0, Build 1
Injury Frequency 1.25
Injury Frequency Training: .75 (adjusted from 1.25)

August 2015

Bigby Wolf has been named as the new General Manager and Head Coach of the New York Islanders. All assistant coaches have been retained. With the coaching staff in place for the upcoming season, Bigby turned his attention to the scouting team - several scouts were bought out of their contracts, and then replaced with newer, and hopefully better, scouts from around the world.

Season Objective: Make the playoffs.

September 2015 - Around the League

To Ottawa: Kevin Klein
To NY Rangers: Andrew Hammond, Cedric Desjardins

To Calgary: Eddie Lack
To Carolina: Deryk Engelland

To Anaheim: Dave Bolland
To Florida: Simon Depres

Bigby Wolf spent the month contacting several of his colleagues, and opened up trade talks with some of them. Officially, Kyle Okposo and Marek Zidlicky have been placed on the Trade Block. The team currently has over $7,000,000 in cap space remaining for the season, so the goal will be to acquire a top 4 dman. In the case of Okposo, GM Wolf held an exploratory contract extension discussion with the player and it was immediately determined that a settlement would not be agreed upon.

To Islanders: Patric Hornqvist
To Pittsburgh: Kyle Okposo, 2016 7th round pick

To Islanders: Trevor Daley
To Chicago: Thomas Hickey, rights to Mitch Vande Sompel (3a//4a), Jake Bischoff (2.5a//3a)

In acquiring Hornqvist, the Islanders have secured a top six forward who’s currently signed to a 3 year contract at a very reasonable $4.2M per season. The Trevor Daley negotiation was much more complicated, as the Blackhawks were adamant that (quality prospect) Mitch Vande Sompel be packaged as part of the return.

October 2015

The Islanders made two separate waiver claims - Jamie Oleksiak, who was demoted by the Dallas Stars and goaltender Eddie Lack, who Calgary had recently acquired via trade. Both players offer minor upgrades to the current roster. To make room for the new acquisitions - Brian Strait was sent to Bridgeport.

Additionally, Frans Nielsen and Brock Nelson both went down with injuries during the pre-season. As a result, Kirill Petrov and Steve Bernier will make the opening night roster. On defense, rookie Ryan Pulock outplayed the veteran Zidlicky during the pre-season so he’ll start the season patrolling the blue line with Calvin de Haan, on the third pairing. Thomas Greiss, who was signed as a free agent, to assume the back up role to Jaro Halak, has found himself sitting in the #3 hole to start the season. Eddie Lack’s casual demeanour and infectious personality could be a hit in the Islanders locker room.

Opening Night Lineup

Lee - Tavares - Hornqvist
Bailey - Strome - Bernier
Petrov - Grabovski - Kulemin
Martin - Cizikas - Clutterbuck

Daley - Boychuck
Leddy - Hamonic
de Haan - Pulock

Halak
Lack

After starting the season with three consecutive victories (including back to back wins over the Chicago Blackhawks), the Islanders ran into some hard luck during game four, against Nashville. Newcomer Trevor Daley was attempting a wrap around, in the offensive zone, when he was tripped up and sent crashing into the goal post. The result - Daley has fractured an elbow, recovery time is projected at 7 months. Ouch.

The team had a good first month, with 7 wins 3 losses and the 1 shootout loss. John Tavares earned himself the Player of the Month honour, as he and his linemates Anders Lee and Patric Hornqvist dominated.

With no real weaknesses to deal with - onto November!

November 2015

Another solid month of hockey from the Islanders as they went 8-4-1, scoring 36 goals and allowing 28 goals. Breaking that down some more, the Islanders averaged 2.8 goals per game - the same goal scoring average that they had in October. Defensively, the Islanders allowed 2.15 goals per game during the month - up from a 1.92 gaa in October.

The team’s penalty killing dipped this month, hence the bump in goals allowed. The team currently kills 84% of its penalties, good for 20th in the league. The power play is converting on 14.7% of its chances, that places them 17th in the league. Tactical changes will be made to both of the special team units. The Penguins are currently clipping along at a 25.7% success rate (wow!) and the New Jersey Devils lead the league in penalty killing with a 90.5% mark (another wow!).

Patric Hornqvist has been moved to the right side on the second line, and Ryan Strome will slide into the RW1 slot. Brock Nelson and Josh Bailey both struggled to find the net in the last month, hopefully Hornqvist will be able to help get them going. Nelson is averaging a game rating of 71, Bailey’s game rating is 64. Long-term, perhaps its time to find an upgrade for Bailey. Injuries allowed Kirill Petrov to play a half dozen games with Tavares and Hornqvist - but he only managed a single assist. Petrov’s game rating of 54 suggests that he may be in over his head...

And finally - Matt Martin has signed a 3 year extension. He’ll earn a little over $1.7M per season.

From around the league;

Martin Jones (knee), Jake Gardiner (knee) and Ryan Getzlaf all suffered serious injuries, and all three players will miss at least 9 months. If that wasn’t bad enough, San Jose traded the injured Martin Jones to the Calgary Flames for Andrej Meszaros. Classy move Doug Wilson.

The Washington Capitals are off to a terrific start. Check out their (GF//GA) goal differential.

December 2015
(updated with the 2.1 build 4 patch)

With a record of 8-4-1, the Islanders continue to rack up the wins and pile up the points. Over the 13 games played this month, the Islanders scored an impressive 45 goals - or about 3.5 goals per game! While happy with the surge in goal scoring, the goals allowed took a hit this month - with 36 goals against, or a 2.77 gaa. The PP units showed a marginal improvement, and they are now successful on 16.5% of their opportunities. The PK unit dipped a bit, with a kill rate of 82.9%.

The goaltending has been solid, although Eddie Lack had a couple of bad games last month, but Jaro Halak continues to play very well and his stat line confirms that. On the blue line - with the recent trade of Jamie Oleksiak, Brian Strait has been recalled and inserted into the lineup. The third pairing is probably in need of an upgrade - although Marek Zidlicky has played decent.

To Detroit: Jamie Oleksiak, 2016 6th round pick
To Islanders: Darren Helm, 2016 2nd round pick

To Vancouver: Josh Bailey, 2016 4th round pick
To Islanders: Radim Vrbata, 2016 2nd round pick

Trading Bailey wasn’t as easy as you might think, as he led the team in takeaways. Forwards with more takeaways than giveaways are tough to find but the acquisition of Vrbata gives the team more scoring punch. Darren Helm has been brought in to help out the penalty killing unit, and while trading Oleksiak wasn't ideal, the 2nd round draft pick will be a good asset for the second half of the season.

From around the League

No major injuries (4+ weeks) to report, and there were only a couple of minor trades. Newsflashes out of Colorado and Vancouver suggested that Patrick Roy and Willie Desjardins are both on the hot seat, and unless things turn around for their respective teams - they may soon find themselves unemployed. Perhaps the most surprising development however, was the rumours surrounding Ken Holland in Detroit.

With the league almost at its mid-way point of the season, here are the league leaders in various categories.

January 2015

A 4-4-2 month saw the Islanders drop a spot in the standings. Goal scoring isn’t a problem but the goals against continues to creep up - as the Islanders goals against totals continues to increase in each month of the current season. Not good.

In an effort to shore up the defense, GM Wolf sent promising youngster Ryan Pulock to the San Jose Sharks for veteran Marc Edouard Vlasic. Vlasic recorded 6 assists in his first 7 games, and while the PK unit didn’t improve during the month, the PK unit also didn’t bomb. Hopefully, the PK unit can start to improve.

To the Islanders: Marc Edouard Vlasic, 2016 4th round pick
To the Sharks: Ryan Pulock, Taylor Cammarata, Devon Toews, 2017 6th round pick

This was a real, real tough trade as Ryan Pulock was considered a future anchor of the Islanders defense core. The addition of Vlasic has allowed the Islanders to demote Brian Strait to Bridgeport of the AHL. There is no doubt that Vlasic has upgraded the talent level of the defensive core but team cohesion may have become an issue with the hockey club. In 10 games this month, the team allowed 31 goals. Again, not good. Perhaps most disturbing - the giveaways continue to hurt the Islanders. What’s a coach to do when his best d-man has developed a tendency to play hot potato with the hockey puck?

Contract News

Frans Nielsen has re-upped for another 3 years at $4,833,334 per season. Even at the ripe old age of 31, Frans continues to produce offensively but perhaps more importantly, his play away from the puck remains sound. A true pro.

Eddie Lack has signed a 2 year extension worth $3.1M, or $1,500,000 per season. Lack has stabilized the backup goaltender position for the Islanders.

Ryan Strome has agreed on a 1 year bridge deal, worth a reasonable very $3,000,000.

Kevin Poulin has agreed to a 2 year, two-way contract. Poulin’s signing gives the team depth at the goaltender position.

Negotiations continue with Casey Cizikas and minor leaguers Alan Quine and Scott Mayfield. The management team is currently having in-house discussions on the futures of Radim Vrbata, Kiril Petrov and Darren Helm.

From Around the League

Bryan Little blew out his knee, expected rehab time will be 12 months. Ouch. This is the worst injury of the season, thus far.

For the second consecutive month, rumours continue to circulate out of Vancouver - as Willie Desjardins is still on thin ice.

Jim Rutherford of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the latest executive to find himself on the hot seat...

And the League Standings

In an effort to shake up the team, after their sub-par month of January, the coaching staff adjusted their tactics and the lineup. Cal Clutterback found himself sitting in the press box, and watching the game as a healthy scratch. Not only did the Islanders win that first game of the month, but they started dominating games. For the month, they went 10-3-1. Once again, they averaged 3 goals per game but the real improvement was on the defensive side as they only allowed 28 goals in 14 games. Much better.

With the team playing better, Clutterbuck was deemed expendable…

To Dallas: Cal Clutterbuck, rights to Eamon McAdam, 2017 7th round pick
To Islanders: Stephen Johns

Very happy with this deal, as we managed to shed some salary and at the same time - we managed to re-stock the prospect pool. Johns should make the team at next season’s training camp. It should also be mentioned that Darren Helm has been playing well, and without his steady efforts, we wouldn’t have been able to trade Clutterbuck.

The special teams units both improved a little bit, the PP guys are at 16.2% and the PK boys are at 83.4. Both units will be tweaked slightly before simming the set of March games.

Contract News

Prospect Scott Mayfield signed a 3 year, 2 way deal. Our scouting team currently views his ability as a 3a, and his potential is 3.5a.

Casey Czikas and Alan Quine did not sign new deals with the team. The Islanders did however, qualify both players. Czikas was asking for $3,000,000 over two years - while the Islanders were offering $2,400,000 over two years,I don’t see a deal getting done unless the player lowers his demands. As for Alan Quine (3a ability, 3.5 potential), we were offering $750,000 a season on a 2 year deal and Alan wants over $1.1M per season, on a 2 year deal. Again, I don’t think a new deal can be reached.

Bigby Wolf recently told the media that he was pleased with the 1 year extension (worth $3,000,000) that Ryan Strome signed. Well, imagine his shock upon learning about the new contracts that Filip Forsberg and Nate McKinnon just signed…

Filip Forsberg: $7,440,000 over 4 years, or $1,860,000 per season.
Nate McKinnon: $7,650,000 over 3 years, or $2,550,00 per season

From Around the League

Lots of minor deals occurred this month, here are a few of the bigger ones:

To Chicago: Mattias Ekholm
To Nashville: Andrew Shaw

To San Jose: James Reimer, Sam Carrick
To Toronto: Logan Couture, Aaron Dell

To Boston: Craig Smith
To Nashville: David Krejci, Tommy Cross

On the injury front, Florida lost their prized d-man - Aaron Ekblad, who will be out for 4 months because of a concussion.

With the league gearing up for its stretch drive, the teams that are having disappointing seasons have started making organizational changes. Two coaches lost their jobs this month, and according to the league’s rumour mill - several other coaches and GMs may not finish the season. The fired coaches are Mike Yeo of the Wild (replaced by Ron Rolston) and the other coach shown the door was Jon Cooper of the Lightning (replaced by George Gwozdecky)

March 2016

Easily the worst month of the season, as the Islanders posted a 6-7-2 record. With 42 goals scored and allowing 46 goals against. The team ran into some injury problems within their blueline. The lack of defensive depth will need to be addressed during the off-season.

After the trade deadline, a few teams placed decent players on the waiver wire, but we couldn't claim any of those players because we are currently at the maximum contract limit of 50. Again, this will be dealt with during the off-season.

Despite the disappointing month, we have already qualified for the playoffs.

Contract News

Radim Vrbata, after registering only 4 points in his last 15 games, has been approached about a contract extension - turns out he's seeking a contract of $6,000,000 for one year. That would be a significant bump above the $5,000,000 that he's making this season. No thanks.

Stephen Johns - despite not having even played a single NHL game in his career, Johns has signed a 3 year contract worth a total of $4,500,000. Fortunately, it is a 2 way deal.

Brian Strait - if anyone benefitted from the blueline injury bug of this month, it was Strait. Not only did he manage to get some games in but he also signed a two year contract extension worth $950,000 per season.

Two way deals were also signed with James Wright (C), Chris Gibson (G) and defenders Tom Nilsson and Kevin Czuczman.

From Around the League

Shocking news out of Nashville as rookie Kristian Nakyva's career came to a sudden end, as he suffered a career ending concussion. The rookie managed to score 10 points in 42 games this season.

And everyone's favourite borderline lunatic - Steve Downie - will be out for six months as he suffered a scary neck laceration.

GM Jimmy Rutherford, who has been on the hot seat in Pittsburgh, fired his head coach Mike Johnston, and replaced him with recent (Minnesota) cast-off, Mike Yeo.

Don Maloney, the general manager of the Arizona Coyotes has dismissed the rumours of his impending firing by firing his head coach Dave Tippett. Micheal Stewart has been hired to lead the rebuild in the desert state.

John Hynes, the coach of the Devils is also on the hot seat as are GM's Jarmo Kekalainen (in Columbus) and once again, Jim Benning of the Canucks is desperately fighting to keep his job.
