Singing the Blues (NHL 1947 St. Louis expansion)

The National Hockey League has been around for thirty seasons heading into 1946-47, with this year being the 30th season. The league consists of six teams currently, the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings.

With the growth in population in North America there has been genuine interest in an expansion to a seventh city. Previously, Montreal had a second team called the Maroons, and Philly had a club. Over half a dozen cities have shown interest, including Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Buffalo.

The tight six-team travel schedule provides for fans to easily know everyone, but as the season has been expanded from 50 to 60 games in 1946-1947 now every team plays each other 12 times a season which is a lot when you consider the distance between Chicago and Montreal.
