Shemar Myrie, RHP
Myrie is another pitcher whose career was overshadowed by Cabedo and Avila. He was their contemporary, but just slightly below their level. He finished 2nd or 3rd in the Pitcher of the Year voting 5 times and was selected to 5 all-star teams. He was the AL division series MVP twice, but unfortunately never won a World Series title. Shutouts were no stranger of his, having thrown 34 of them in his major league career.

Kevin Kramer, SS
Kramer retires as the best shortstop in Major League history, or at least the best of his time. He won the 1905 NL MVP, the 1900 World Series, was a 4-time all-star, 5-time gold glover, and one-time silver slugger. Defense was certainly his strong suit, but he could hold his own as an average bat as well.

Roberto Castellon, LHP
Castellon was a well-known name around the league in its first 5 or 6 years, but he sharply dropped off his low-30s age plateau. He was a 2-time all-star but could never push into the elite starting pitching group.

Ben Schmidt, LHP
Schmidt's career was very similar to Castellon's. He had 3 very good seasons and 4 well above average ones. However, he never broke into the elite starters and didn't hold his longevity quite enough. He was a 2-time all-star and finished 3rd in the Pitcher of the Year award once.

Gelacio Arcos, CF
Arcos is the CF equivalent of Lazalde last year. He is right on the cusp of the Hall of Fame, but he's going to stay out. He had the peak necessary - two years of over 7.5 WAR, including an MVP in 1902. He was a three-time all-star, two-time gold glove, one-time silver slugger, and one-time World Series champion. In the years of stolen base frenzy, he was right at the top, finishing his career with 809, currently 3rd all-time. His 152 stolen bases in 1902 may stand as a record for a long time, and of the top SB leaders, he is the only one to have positive baserunning run value.

However, his value dropped precipitously in 1908 when he turned 32 after a fractured ankle and was never quite the same.

Esteban Villegas, LHP
Villegas was slightly different from the other good starters in that he was more consistent but had a lower peak. His best year was in 1906 with 4.5 WAR, but he stayed in the 2-5 WAR range from 1900 to 1907. He never made an all-star team, but he did win the World Series in 1904 with the Pirates.

Luis Navarro, LHP
Navarro was one of the better closers in the beginning years of the league, making three all-star teams and winning two reliever of the year awards.

Jaheim Ausberry, LHP
Ausberry had a few good years as the Mets, Tigers, and Devil Rays closer, making two all-star teams. He tried to resurrect his career as an Indy league starter at the age of 39 and even pitched a shutout. He must have rethought his decision as he retired at the end of the year.

Jon Wilbur, RHP:
Was drafted with the 22nd overall pick in 1901 to the Houston Astros out of Sachem East High School in New York, where he was the pitcher of the year and MVP. He was a top 50 prospect before making the Astros rotation in 1905 and has been above average every year since.

Geraldo Morales, CF:
4th overall pick in 1906 out of the University of Miami. He became the Mets starting CF in 1907 and has won 4 Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger and has made 3 All-Star teams in 5 years. He was born in Barnstable Town, MA.

Tristan Hunsinger, 1B:
16th overall pick in 1903 out of the University of Florida and moved immediately after one game in Rookie ball into the Twins starting lineup. He has made two all-star teams and won two silver sluggers. He led the league in home runs in 1911 with 11.

Lochlan Collyer, RF:
3rd round draft pick in 1903 from the Indiana Hoosiers. He spent a year and a half in the minor leagues and then debuted with the Athletics. His career changed drastically in 1907 where he went from replacement level player to MVP candidate. He has made three all-star teams and has one gold glove.

Tomas Reed, SS:
Reed needs no introduction and he certainly belongs on this list after three straight MVP awards before the age of 25. He was the first overall draft pick in 1908 out of Oregon State.

Trevor Ziliak, 3B:
56th overall pick out of Arkansas in 1903. He was primed for a very good...prime, but he lost weeks and months to thumb, thigh, shoulder, and back injuries.

J.P. Avila stayed in the American League and signed with the Texas Rangers. He'll be 41 at the end of the contract.


Fowler originally signed with an Independent League team but then had his contract purchased by the White Sox. That is very common in this world as it seems that the Indy teams seem to be more aggressive or capable of signing some players.

The top prospect list has returned to its normal form - the top 10 are hitters and only 20-30 are pitchers.


Kyle Matthews is the top prospect. Where did he come from? He was a 15th round draft pick in 1908 out of an Illinois high school. Over the course of three years, his overall potential increased from 25 to 50 to 65 to 80.


The top pitcher is Del Ayling, who is somewhat unknown but less so as Matthews. He was a 2nd round draft pick in 1909 after finishing 2nd in Pitcher of the Year award in the Georgia high school league. He was part of the trade that sent Josh Fowler to San Diego.

Top Prospects:
Lester Barlow - The top prospect in 1907 has not played according to his potential. He has been hitting pretty well but his defense at shortstop is absolutely atrocious, taking away all of his value.

Jack Gilkey - The top pitching prospect and he has been a slightly above average player for 6 years.

Chris Spinner - He has been back and forth between AA, AAA, and MLB but hasn't really stuck, he has instead been a replacement level player.

Draftees:
R.J. Taylor - The top draft prospect has been at the top of prospect lists for quite a few years and finally got a good chance in the major leagues in 1911. However, he had an elbow strain in 1912 that stopped his forward momentum and will look to play better next year.

Bobby Cattouse - The top college draftee made the 1911 All-Star team and Silver Slugger in LF.

Andy Goodell - The top pitching draftee in 1907 had a career-ending injury in 1909.

Steve Rennecker - He was the first college player off the board. He got to the majors in 1909 and has been an average RF player.

Award Winners:
Lou Thornton - The AL Rookie of the Year has won three silver sluggers and two all-star teams.

Alec Bagby - The NL Rookie of the Year has won three gold gloves and one all-star team.

Other:
Shane Romo - He pitched a perfect game in college and was drafted in the 7th round. He cracked the Dbacks rotation in 1912 for 10 games after three full seasons in the minor leagues.

Antonio Tosi - He gave up 29 runs in 3 innings in a high school game. He was drafted in the 29th round in 1911 and spent the year with the Tigers rookie and low-a teams.

Woody Vasquez - He pitched a perfect game in AA but only has two career MLB games.

Kristian Steele - He also pitched a perfect game, but in A+. He has made it into 14 MLB games, all as a reliever.

Dana Clavez - We haven't heard much from him the past few years. He has had injury problems which might end up holding him out of the Hall of Fame, as his mid-30s have not been very productive.

Derek Abraham - He was drafted 2nd overall in 1907 but didn't sign. He was then sent to the Missouri Tigers for three years, drafted 1st overall in 1910, and has been a top 10 prospect in both 1911 and 1912.
