Always one of my favorites. He had substance to go with the style. RIP.

My favourite player growing up. And I got to tell him that in person a few years ago too!
I hope and imagine he had a great life despite not living to a ripe old age. |

RIP "Cabeza". You were truly great on and off the field. Absolutely, fully, completely, and totally shameless plug here:
https://www.jaysinthehouse.com/2020/...smooth_15.html Finished it about two weeks ago, and left the death date blank, hoping against hope that he'd somehow be able to pull through. He managed to have an impact on sooo many people in his brief 57 years on this planet, and I suspect the tributes that will come out over the days and weeks to follow will reflect that. Gone too soon.

Also had one of the biggest postseason home runs in franchise history for my Tribe in the 1997 ALCS.

And then there was the 1993 World Series when he knocked in nine, including five in the huuuge Game 4, 15-14 win for my team. That game was an all-timer, not just for the Blue Jays, but in baseball history, and his fingerprints were all over it. I don't think it's a stretch to say that, most of the time, he was at his best when the lights shone brightest. Then there's the person he was off the field. I have no personal knowledge of that, but the tributes that are coming in are demonstrating how special he was as a human being. As a baseball fan, I was sooo lucky to be able to watch him come to the big leagues, dazzle in the field, and constantly confound defenses with his line to line spray hitting. He could also pull off slug bunts over the heads of charging infielders, and bunt the ball to the SS instead of to one of the corner infielders. He was special, and will be greatly missed. The world needs more Tony Fernandezes, particularly now.

With Polycystic Kidney Disease, it's really only a matter of when. Unless he'd gotten a new kidney, he was in big trouble. Even if he'd gotten a new kidney, the illness could've begun the process of riddling that one with cysts again. At least it would've bought him time, but that's a horrible disease.

Actionjackson, you reminded me of some memories. I loved him not only due to his amazing defense, but also because he was a doubles and, especially, a triples machine.
I remember, when he got traded with McGriff for Alomar and Carter I was so upset. Of course pretty much no one really knew how good Alomar would become (Carter was by far the bigger name at the time) and while McGriff was possibly the headliner leaving, I was far more upset about losing Tony. I remember being sad, upset, angry, all the emotions. But then when we got him back and he won a championship with us, all was forgiven. I wish he had been a Jay his entire career, but then again we probably wouldn't have experienced those championships without what we got for him. Thanks, Tony. You gave us so many great memories. |

Yeah, I was genuinely shocked when I heard. It doesn't seem like all that long ago that he played. Time is going by too fast. RIP, slug bunt master.

Such a smart, smart player. As I've said elsewhere, he used his brain to beat your brains in. Baseball needs more Tony Fernandezes, and the world needs more Tony Fernandezes. He will be missed tremendously.
