Preview of series with Cubs
Back when this season started, it would not have been a surprise that the 2004 Cardinals and the 2016 Cubs would be battling it out for the NL Central title.
A little less than halfway through August, the opposite is true, they are fighting it out for the basement as they begin a three-game series at Busch Stadium. |

August 14: Cubs 7, Cardinals 3
Game 115: Cubs 7, Cardinals 3, at Busch Stadium, St. Louis
Rec/Std: 52-63, 4th (tied/w. Cubs), 12 GB Pittsburgh W: Wilson 3-4, 9.35. L: Romero 0-1, 15.00. HR Rizzo 19. Player of the game: The Cubs' Anthony Rizzo was 1 for 4 with a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 3-3 tie. Note: The Cardinals' Chris Carpenter, who finally pitched decent after five straight horrible starts, tossed six shutout innings before giving up a run in the seventh. The Cubs then battered the St. Louis bullpen for six more runs to win the game. Rizzo's grand slam came off Jason Isringhausen, who like in real life, does not pitch well unless he comes into a game with a one-run lead to open the ninth inning. Cards notes: Thomas' tenure in St. Louis doesn't last long
Just three games into his stint with the St. Louis Cardinals, first baseman Frank Thomas has suffered a strained oblique injury that will sideline up to five weeks.
This means he will probably not return this season. His replacement on the roster has yet to be determined. Note: OOTP has shut down its server so I cannot add anything more a this pt. Last edited by rink23; 03-12-2018 at 02:50 PM. |

Cards news: Morris called up for emergency start
RHP Matt Morris will get the callup to replace the injured Frank Thomas on the Cardinals' 24-man roster.
Morris, who opened the season in St. Louis before struggles sent him to AAA Chandler, will be starting for Jeff Suppan in the finale of the Cardinals' three-game series with the Cubs at Busch Stadium, Suppan was pushed into relief duty in the Cardinals' 11-inning victory on August 15 because of lack of rested bullpen pitchers. Morris went 3-5 with a 6.18 ERA before being demoted to Chandler on June 30. He had gone 1-3 with a 2.68 in eight starts for the Centaurs. Last edited by rink23; 03-12-2018 at 06:16 PM. |

Preview of Pittsburgh series
Coming off a series win over the Cubs at home, the Cardinals remain at home as they welcome the NL Central leading Pittsburgh Pirates.
At 65-52, the Pirates own a 3.5-game advantage over the equally surprising Milwaukee Brewers in the division. |
