Happy New Year: Dexter Astros By Request

Here's why most of the negatives need professional handling and color correction. These are interim postings (via light board) of Jim Landis (1957) and Aaron Pointer (1967) and they will be off to the photo place this week and I'll repost them when they're back.

More later.

Happy New Year: Dodgers By Request

Here's the late Leon Everitt (1969) and Jim Hickman (1962) in the 1967 Dodger camp - again with much better copies to come in a couple of weeks.

I'm not planning on turning this into a jukebox, but if there are other requests I can throw a couple into the pile to be professionally scanned. Two requests: A) remember these are from spring training 1967 (a handful 1966, some 1968) and none are from midseason, and b) presume that if the really tough guys haven't been posted already, they don't exist.

Happy New Year #4: Don Lock 1962

Not impossible to find in color with the Phillies, but I'm sure this is the first publication of the 1967 Dexter portrait of Lock, and I know this is the first time the shot they took of him in 1968 has surfaced.

Happy New Year #5: Bill Murphy 1966

He's popped up in a couple of venues (including ours) but I'm not sure we've been able to see one that can be precisely dated - this is from Spring Training 1967 and unbeknownst to a man widely praised for his work in centerfield the year before, his major league career is already over.

Happy New Year #6: Vern Handrahan 1964

There are a couple of Topps images from this tough two-season reliever from Prince Edward Island in Canada, in the black-and-red uniforms from spring training 1965 but I think this Dexter is the first we've seen of him in green-and-gold (and looking a little Ferris Bueller-ish, I might add).

Happy New Year #7: Bob Lee 1964

Perfect storm for a bunch of Angels players: the team switched identities - and caps - from "Los Angeles" to "California" at the very end of the 1965 season, then unloaded literally half the 40-man roster by midseason 1967.

There are a lot of L.A./California Angels who are not known in color in the "CA" cap other than in the Dexter 1966 team postcard set - and one of them is Lee (they also got him in spring training, 1967, before his five-game stint with the Dodgers, and that one will go to the photo place on Tuesday).

Dexter Braves Scarce?

Thank you for your generosity in asking. Any images in your stack of Tommie Aaron, Bob Uecker, Ed Rakow, Walt Hriniak or Mike Page?

Yours has been a great holiday gift to the board.

Happy New Year #8: Ed Bailey 1953

And here's something even scarcer: Dexter caught six-time National League All-Star Ed Bailey during his five-game swan song with the '66 Angels.

The Harts image (not that exact same signed one) has been kicking around since at least 2013. I forget who spotted it first (might have been me). I think it was David who cleaned this one up as best he could (at Baseball-Birthdays). It is, other than yearbook tiny inserts, the only color image of Harts in circulation, though Topps must have caught him at some point.

Topps did NOT photograph Harts - or at minimum, if they did, did not put him in their files. I searched long and hard for him!

Don Wilson 1966

My apologies. I thought I had posted this more than a year ago. It's the late, star-crossed Astros' pitcher from that collection I had described in the autumn of 2015. It's from spring training, obviously, and from 1967.

As to early Dexter replies, forgot also to mention that there are images from all teams except St. Louis (which was not included in the 1967 series and clearly was never shot) and Baltimore (no explanation, there just aren't any). There are only a few of some teams (Boston) and in the case of California, there's a bunch from 1966, none from 1967, and a few from 1968.

As to the team requests, none of the Braves are included, and of the A's, Donaldson is already in the pile for processing (most of the other guys were not in spring training that year).

I have to confess...I do get a chuckle out of seeing the players holding the name slates.

If I'm reading this correctly then the top photo of Don Lock is from 1967 and the bottom one is from 1968. Were the Phillies experimenting with different shades of red in their uniforms and caps back then?
The top one ('67) is sort of a maroon shade, while the bottom one ('68) is a bright Scarlet.
