Walkers news: Sept. 5 -- St. Louis 9, Green Bay 5

Record: 75-59, 1st, 4 GA Des Moines
(Note: This was my second attempt to finish this game. In the first, it played out to 14 innings, when St. Louis scored five runs in the top of that inning to win 11-6. However, I walked away from the game for 15 minutes and while I was gone Microsoft started a Windows update, wiping the game out).
Tied 5-5, St. Louis exploded for four runs in the top of the eighth innings to defeat Green Bay 9-5 at War Memorial Stadium (Buffalo).
Vidal Brujan led off the inning with a home run off Long Haulers relief pitcher Luis Angel Medina.
After an out, Larry Ernesto and Johan Comargo followed with single, which led to Medina's exit in favor of Rodolfo Martinez.
Carlos Vidal greeted Medina with an RBI double.
Rhys Hoskins duplicated that hit, except his double scored two.
It was a back and fourth game.
A three-run homer from Green Bay's Ruben Villanueva off St.Louis starter Jason Froehlich had put the Long Haulers up 3-1 in the bottom of the first.
The River Walkers scored three times in the top of the third against Green Bay starter Michael Wacha - Jared Thomas drove in one run with double while Brujan had an RBI single -- to go up 5-3.
The Haulers tied it in th e bottom of the fifth against Froehlich.

Bobby Bradley tied it with an RBI single which scored Andrew Lee.
Froelich lasted five innings, allowing five runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked four.
Luis Palomo, Ricky Cisneros, Derek Gordon and Argenis Batista all worked an inning of relief.
Cisneros (2-1) earned his second win of the season.

Record: 76-59, 1st, 4 GA Des Moines
Starting pitcher Steven Brault allowed one run over seven innings and St. Louis completed a three-game sweep of Green Bay with a 5-1 win at War Memorial Stadium (Buffalo).
An RBI single from Bobby Bradley in the bottom of the first inning led to the only run Brault would allow.
Over his seven full innings, Brault (9-9) allowed the one run on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.
The River Walkers seized the lead with a trio of runs in the top of the third off Long Haulers starter Coleman Williams
Carlos Vidal got it started with a one-out walk, and he quickly scored when Rhys Hoskins followed with a double.
Hoskins, who had taken third on the throw to the plate, soon crossed the plate when Williams threw a wild pitch.
Andrew Benintendi scored the inning's third run.
He singled with one out, stole second and scored on a single by Clay Owens, as the rookie collected his first RBI in the majors.
Owens would later score the Walkers final two runs of the game.

The eighth inning saw Owens lead off with a single, move to second on a Vidal Brujan bunt and scored on an Americaan single.

Walkers news: Sept. 7 -- St. Louis 6, Chicago 0, Game 1

Record: 77-59, 1st, 5 GA Des Moines
Jimmy Lambert and a quartet of relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as St. Louis downed Chicago 6-0 in the opening game of a doubleheader at Busch Stadium (1997).
The contest was the makeup of a rain-out earlier in the season at Wrigley Field, making the River Walkers the visitors despite playing at home.
Lambert (6-8) allowed three hits over 5.1 scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked one.
Lambert exited the game in the sixth with runners at the corners and one out.
John Curtiss took over and got the only batter he would face, G-Men clean-up hitter Cruz Calderon, to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Williams Jerez got the first two outs of the seventh inning, before giving way to Angel Tiburcio who struck out Michael Mateja with two runners aboard to keep it scoreless.
With the Walkers up 6-0, Argenis Batista needed just six batters to get through the final two innings to end it.
Facing one of the top pitchers in the MBL in Shohei Ohtani, St. Louis got the only runs it would need in the top of the third when Carlos Vidal hit a three-run homer.
The Walkers chased Ohtani in the fifth after JT Schwartz led off the inning with a homer.
St. Louis added two insurance runs in the eighth against the Chicago bullpen. Jared Thomas drove in the first run with a double. Vidal Brujan plated the other with a sacrifice fly.

Walkers news: Sept. 8 -- St. Louis 6, Chicago 1

Record: 79-59, 1st, 6.5 GA Des Moines
Adonis Medina didn't match the back-to-back shutouts St. Louis posted in the previous day's doubleheader sweep of Chicago, but he came pretty darn close limiting the G-Men to a single run over seven innings of a 6-1 win at Busch Stadium (1997).
An RBI groundout from Cory Acton scored Nolan Jones to end a 21-inning string of scoreless innings for Chicago in the top of the fourth, however by that time the River Walkers already led 5-0.
Medina would end up allowing the one run on seven hits in his seven innings. He struck out three and walked the same number.
Argenis Batista kept Chicago off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth to complete the win.
St. Louis struck early against G-Men starting pitcher Josh Hader.
Hader hit Bo Bichette with a pitch to begin the bottom of the first.
Carlos Vidal moved Bichette to second with a bunt and Rhys Hoskins chased him home with a single.
That lead grew to 5-0 in the bottom of the third.
An RBI double from Andrew Benintendi made it 2-0. The next hitter, Fernando Tatis Jr., quickly expanded it with a three-run homer off Brian Keller, who had just relieved Hader.
Tatis collected a fourth RBI in the eighth with a run-scoring sacrifice fly.

Alex Faedo limited Chicago to two runs over seven innings to collect his 16th win and St. Louis completed a four-game sweep of the G-Men with a 4-3 win at Busch Stadium (1997).
The victory extended the River Walkers win streak to eight games.
Chicago did get single runs off Faedo in the first and third innings, but that 2-0 lead was wiped out when St. Louis scored three times in the bottom of the third.
Carlos Vidal got it started with a one-out single off G-Men starting pitcher Luis Ramon Silva.
The rest all happened with two outs.
A wild pitch moved Vidal to second and he scored when Andrew Benintendi doubled.
Fernando Tatis Jr. then chased home Benintendi with a single, Tatis Jr. taking second on the throw to the plate.
That paid off when Chicago left fielder Jared Kelenic dropped a fly ball hit by Jared Thomas, as Tatis Jr. scored from second.
Tatis Jr. scored again the fifth after he doubled off reliever Jon Gray with one out.

A Thomas single moved him to third.
Tatis Jr. then was granted the plate when Gray was called for a balk.
Faedo (16-5) allowed the two runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one.
Williams Jerez did allow a homer to Luis Tejada while pitching the eighth, which allowed Chicago to pull within 4-3.
