After one month of baseball, we are 13-10, good for second place in the NL Central and still within striking distance for everything. The Central has been quite competitive in April and it took us some hard fought games and some great offense provided by Vargas to get three over .500 so...

Our pitching has been great despite Cliff Lee... and we got rid of this problem quickly... tho not really the way I wanted this one to end. But... I'd rather give Jungmann a roster spot and Nicasio a chance to start than wasting my time on a 37-year old hurler who throws BP fastballs out there...

While Cliff Lee was a mistake costing us $6M, Josh Johnson looks like a bargain, which is exactly why we locked him up for two more years with a team option. Thorny looked solid but didn't get the run support in his first three starts while Peralta was faltering here and there... but at least is healthy. Juan Nicasio will start for now in place of Cliff Lee... Ronnie's team...

PS: Jose Berrios won the AA PotM Award.

Losing O'Flaherty meant we had to call up Smith and add a lefty for depth. Rosscup has a 6.75ERA in 20IP in the majors, but Logan liked him and I hope we won't need him here... Apart from our closer(off all guys) this pen resembles more of what I call a rock solid pen and we are 2nd in pen ERA in the National League... keep going guys!

This must've been Lucroy's best month with me at the helm and I hope he continues that pace... Maldonado didn't get alot of AB's and why should he as defensive replacement. Federowicz cleared waivers and is hitting bombs in AAA... but for now I like Maldonado where he is.

While Kennys Vargas has been sensational and Sardinas has done his job wherever he has played... the rest of this infield is still a mess. Inagaki has been pretty bad and I we will play Sardinas/Segura more... which won't be the perfect solution... Oswaldo Arcia in AAA is doing fine but not yet ready to play out here... and Hector Gomez has simply not impressed me...

So many outfielders... no production. We demoted Logan Schafer just to make sure I don't try to bury him alive and I told Roenicke he should start Taylor in center... If this group picks up the slack... we could finally get some offense going. Manuel Margot would've been our first choice... but he is on the DL with a minor injury and we will give him some more time to develop anyways...

2016 Week 5

Week 5: 3vs Pittsburgh Pirates, 4vs St. Louis Cardinals

May 2nd

Pittsburgh Pirates - Milwaukee Brewers 7-6
MIL SP Josh Johnson 5IP 7H 5R 5ER 1BB 6K
MIL RF Ryan Braun 2-5 2RBI
MIL LF Khris Davis 1-3 R RBI
MIL CF Tyrone Taylor 1-3 R RBI BB TP
HR PIT: Carlos Moncrief(1), Jarrod Saltalamacchia 2(5)
HR MIL: none
W: Francisco Liriano(3-1 4.78) L: Josh Johnson(3-2 3.15) SV: Mark Melancon(5 4.82)
Our offense was alive today, collecting 11H and 3BB and started to rally down 7-2 with Tyrone Taylor collecting a RBI-triple for his first MLB hit in the 8th.

News:
Pirates C Jarrod Saltalamacchia lifted two over the fence in a 7-6 win against the Brewers, going 2-3 2R 3RBI BB 2HR today. After winning the 2013 World Series with the Red Sox, he signed a big contract in Miami, disappointed and was dealed to Pittsburgh for two prospects. He is batting .222-5-15 .786 in 24 games.

Cubs SP Ian Kennedy(31, 4*) pitched a complete game 2-1 win over his former team, the Padres, going 9IP 6H 1ER 2BB 1KK, paying some dividents on his big 6y/$91M deal. Originally drafted in the 1st round in 2006 by the Yankees, Kennedy ended up with the D'backs where he won 21 games in 2011 and later with the Padres. He is 1-2 3.86 43K in six starts this year.

Braves SP Alex Wood(25, 4.5*) pitched eight innings of three hit ball, opening a set against the Nationals with a 1-0 win and walking two while fanning seven. The left hander won 17 games last year and is 2-3 2.70 33K in six starts this year.

The Cardinals will be without RF Jason Heyward(26, 4.5*) for 2-3 month with a broken hamate bone in his wrist. The star outfielder was batting .356-7-24 1.033OPS in 25 games.

May 3rd

Pittsburgh Pirates - Milwaukee Brewers 2-5
MIL SP Taylor Jungmann 5IP 3H 1R 1ER 3BB 5K
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 2-3 R SB(10)
MIL RF Ryan Braun 1-4 R RBI HR
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 1-3 R 2RBI BB HR
HR PIT: Alen Hanson(2), Andrew McCutchen(6)
HR MIL: Ryan Braun(3), Kennys Vargas(11)
W: Taylor Jungmann(1-0 1.80) L: Jameson Taillon(0-3 4.54) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(6 3.07)
Ron made up his mind and started Jungmann and he went five strong while Vargas bombed us ahead 2-0 in the 1st and we never looked back.

News:
Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw(28, 5*) went the distance in a 9-1 win over the Rockies, allowing 5H 1ER 0BB 10K. The 4x Cy Young winner and 2x MvP is 3-1 3.07 37K in six starts this year.

Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin(26, 3*) collected a complete game 6-1 win over the Giants, going 9IP 3H 1ER 1BB 5K today. After returning from Tommy John last year, Corbin won 10 games with a 3.31ERA and he is 4-2 3.24 25K in six starts this year, working off his pinpoint control.

Twins 1B Joe Mauer(33, 2.5*) collected a perfect 5-5 day in a 5-1 win over the Tigers, scoring twice while hitting three doubles. Mauer has won three batting titles and five Silver Slugger Awards over his career and he is batting .387-0-14 .944OPS in 26 games once again.

Astros RF George Springer(26, 4*) helped his team to a hard fought 12-10 win in Yankee Stadium, going 4-6 3R 5RBI with a 3-run home run. Springer collected his first All-Star nomination for his first full year in 2015 and is off to a cold start, batting .228-4-11 .755OPS in 27 games.

May 4th

Pittsburgh Pirates - Milwaukee Brewers 6-5
MIL SP Wily Peralta 5.2IP 9H 6R 6ER 6BB 2K
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 1-4 R BB
MIL RF Ryan Braun 1-4 R 2RBI DB
MIL 3B Matt Reynolds 1-4 R 2RBI HR
MIL SS Jean Segura 2-4 R DB
HR PIT: Andrew McCutchen(7)
HR MIL: Matt Reynolds(7)
W: Vance Worley(3-1 4.82) L: Wily Peralta(0-3 4.54) SV: Mark Melancon(6 4.35)
Peralta was missing the plate all game long and after loading the bases in the 6th, McCutchen made him pay with a grand slam that we never recovered from. Series loss...

News:
Giants SP Madison Bumgarner(26, 4.5*) pitched a complete game 5-hitter in a 4-0 win over the D'backs, walking two and striking out eight and avoiding a sweep here. Bumgarner, the 2014 World Series MvP, is 4-3 2.15 41K in seven games for the 15-13 Giants.

Marlins CF Marcell Ozuna(25, 1.5/2*) drove in five in a 10-2 win over the Mets as he went 4-5 2R 5RBI DB today. Coming off a 19HR season, the kid out of the DR with a cannon of an arm is batting .313-5-20 .880OPS in 28 games in 2016.

The Phillies pulled the trigger on a deal that will add C Tom J. Murphy(25, 1* HS, 2/2.5*, .222-0-4 25G) from the Rockies to their roster. The Rockies get RHRP Luis A. Garcia(29, 1.5*, 1-1 6.00 12IP) and #85 prospect C Lucas Herbert(19, 1* HS, 4* OSA, R) in that deal.

May 5th

St. Louis Cardinals - Milwaukee Brewers 0-7
MIL SP Tyler Thornburg 5.2IP 3H 0R 0ER 4BB 5K, 1-2 RBI
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 3-5 DB
MIL CF Tyrone Taylor 1-3 R 2RBI BB
MIL C Martin Maldonado 3-4 2R RBI DB
MIL SS Jean Segura 1-4 R 2RBI TP
HR STL: none
HR MIL: none
W: Tyler Thornburg(2-4 3.46) L: Lance Lynn(2-2 3.18)
Thornburg pitched his heart out and gave 1-0 lead to the pen who kept the zeroes coming... and then we broke out for 2-run 6th and a 4-run 8th.

News:
Braves SP Matt Wisler(23, 2.5/3.5*) pitched eight scoreless in a 4-3 win over the Nationals... as his pen allowed three runs in the 9th. Wisler allowed 6H 0BB 6K and after spending most of his rookie season in the pen, is 1-1 2.58 34K in six starts.

Marlins CF Marcell Ozuna(25, 1.5/2*) stayed hot today and hit two home runs in a 8-3 win over the Phillies and Cole Hamels, going 3-5 2R 4RBI 2HR today, improving him to bat .325-7-24 .945OPS in 29 games.

Rangers CF Delino DeShields Jr.(23, 2.5/*) went deep twice in a 7-5 win over the White Sox today, going 3-3 3R 6RBI BB 2HR with a stolen base. DeShields Jr. stole a league high 68 bases last year and is .216-2-9 15/21SB in 28 games this year.

May 6th

St. Louis Cardinals - Milwaukee Brewers 1-8
MIL SP Jimmy Nelson 5IP 0H 1R 1ER 5BB 5K
MIL RF Ryan Braun 2-5 RBI
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 3-4 2R DB
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 3-5 R 3RBI DB
MIL SS Jean Segura 3-4 2R 2RBI DB TP
HR STL: none
HR MIL: none
W: Jimmy Nelson(4-0 0.51) L: Michael Wacha(1-3 4.39)
Nelson had a no-hitter going after walking in a run in the 2nd... but the dream of a combined no-hitter was broken up by Carpenter in the 8th...

News:
Marlins 3B Martin Prado(32, 1.5*) collected six hits in a 15-1 rout of the Phillies that saw them score 10 runs in the first inning. He went 6-6, all singles, with 4 runs scored and an RBI and is the first player to collect six hits in a 9-inning game. Prado is batting .230-1-7 .525OPS in 30 games...

May 7th

St. Louis Cardinals - Milwaukee Brewers 1-8
MIL SP Josh Johnson 8IP 4H 1R 1ER 0BB 5K
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 1-4 R 2RBI HR
MIL LF Khris Davis 2-4 R RBI HR
HR STL: Stephen Piscotty(4)
HR MIL: Kennys Vargas(12), Khris Davis(3)
W: Josh Johnson(4-2 2.81) L: James Shields(1-4 4.78) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(7 3.45)
Johnson rebounded nicely and two longballs were enough today... but we maybe payed with health today as Luis Sardinas left the game with an arm injury...

News:
Cubs SP Ian Kennedy(31, 4*) followed up a complete game with a complete game 4-hit shutout against the Reds in a 4-0 win, walking one and whiffing seven. He improved to 2-2 3.18 50K in 7 starts.

Tigers SP Justin Verlander(33, 4.5*) delievered a vintage start against the Astros today, winning 7-0 while pitching 8IP 4H 0ER 2BB 10K. The 2011 AL Cy Young + MvP had a couple of bad seasons but is 3-2 3.35 36K in seven starts for 2016.

The Athletics have added AAA CF Andrew Aplin(25, 2.5*, .317-0-6 AAA) from the Astros in exchange for #63 prospect SS Niko Navarro(19, 4*HS, 5* OSA, R).

Cleveland added an arm in RHRP Eddie Butler(25, 3/3.5*, 1-1 1SV 4.05) from the Rockies today, a team in a clear cut rebuild mode. They get back prospect SS Dawel Lugo(21, 2* HS, 2.5* OSA, A).

May 8th

The Brewers got news that 2B/SS Luis Sardinas(22, 3/4.5* HS, 3.5* OSA, .289-0-5 10/16SB) will be day-to-day for five days with a sore back.

In other news, they announced that they have claimed RHRP Angel Nesbitt(25, 4*, 0.00ERA 2IP) off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. Nesbitt, a fastball(15) and slider(18) hurler was 1-1 1SV 3.38 in 18.2IP last year and has one option left and one option used this year... He has 82 days of service time.

St. Louis Cardinals - Milwaukee Brewers 8-5
MIL SP Taylor Jungmann 3.2IP 6H 6R 6ER 2BB 1K
MIL RF Ryan Braun 2-4 2R 3RBI 2HR
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 2-4 R DB
MIL CF Tyrone Taylor 2-4 R 2RBI HR
HR STL: Stephen Piscotty(5)
HR MIL: Ryan Braun 2(5), Tyrone Taylor(1)
W: Adam Wainwright(6-1 2.93) L: Taylor Jungmann(1-1 7.27) SV: Jordan Walden(1 3.00)
Jungmann's second start was a mess but Ryan Braun had a big day and Tyrone Taylor hit his first MLB home run to keep it close... but the Cards avoid a 4-game sweep.

News:
Red Sox DH David Ortiz(40, 3.5*) blasted his 500th HR into the skies of Arlington today. The legendary slugger started his career with Minnesota, but really took off after joining the Red Sox in 2003... and has been there since. He is a career .284/.378/.542 hitter with 500HR, 1638RBI's and 2336H in 2281 career games. Ortiz is a 9x All-Star, a 6x Silver Slugger and has won three World Series rings.

Indians SP Corey Kluber(30, 4*) pitched 8.2 shutdown innings in a 1-0 win over the Twins, allowing five hits, no walks and collecting 9K's. The 2014 Cy Young winner has led the league in wins for two straight years now(18 2014, 20 2015) and is 4-3 2.87 48K in seven starts this year.

Rays SS Juan H. Diaz(27, 1.5*) had the biggest game of his career today in a 9-4 win Colorado, going 4-4 4R 2RBI DB HR. Diaz, who first signed as non-drafted free agent with the Indians where he appeared in five games in 2012, is a regular this year for the first time and is batting .267-2-13 .722OPS in 30 games.

Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera(33, 5*) has started to get into the groove with a 2-HR game in a 7-5 win over the Astros, going 3-4 2R 6RBI BB DB 2HR. Cabrera, a 6x (and reigning) Silver Slugger Award winner, is batting .284-5-20 .922OPS in 30 games so far.

Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton(26, 5*) was named NL Player of the Week after going 11-26 3HR 7RBI's. He officially is back after his abysmal 2015 and is batting .341-9-25 1.054OPS 2/2SB in 32 games, good for 2.0WAR for the NL East leading Marlins.

It's not a fun thing to tell your manager to change his lineup card, but the returns this week have been there. Logan, Kevin and I looked over the rosters and layed down Ron our thoughts and it was the pitching this week that costed us wins... as we scored 39 runs in seven games this week.

2016 Week 6

Week 6: 2vs Texas Rangers, 3@ Cincinnati Reds

May 9th

May 10th

Texas Rangers - Milwaukee Brewers 4-5
MIL SP Wily Peralta 7IP 5H 3R 3ER 1BB 8K
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 2-4 DB
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 1-4 R 2RBI HR
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 1-3 R 2RBI BB HR
HR TEX: Prince Fielder(9)
HR MIL: Mike Moustakas(5), Kennys Vargas(13)
W: Wily Peralta(3-3 5.10) L: Jake Thompson(0-1 3.42) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(8 3.24)
Peralta gave up two runs in the 1st on a Fielder homer, but settled in and we got him three in the bottom 1st on a Davis triple and a Vargas 2-run homer... and two more in the 3rd when Mous went deep.

News:
Dodgers SP Zach Greinke(32, 4.5*) has pitched a NO-HITTER against the D'backs today in a 3-0 win, allowing only one walk while whiffing K. Only Arizona LF David Peralta walked once to break up the perfect game. Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young Winner, is 4-2 2.63 43K in 7 starts this year.

The Astros and Pirates agreed to a deal that will sent SP Jordan Jankowski(26, 1.5/2*, 1-1 6.00 7GS) to the Pirates. In return, Houston acquires #207 prospect SP Mitch Keller(20, 2* HS, 3* OSA, R) and prospect RF Jeffrey Baez(22, 1*, A).

We had 12 hits and two walks but simply weren't able to come through with runners on and our closer had his first bad outing in May to lose it.

News:
Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista(35, 4.5*) collected home run #300 and #301 today, hitting two solo shots against the Braves. The 3x Home Run king and 4x Silver Slugger broke out in 2010 when he joined Toronto and has not looked back since. For his career, Bautista has played in 1438 games, batting .260/.373/.502 with 301HR, 827RBI's and 1259 hits.

Blue Jays SP Derek Holland(29, 1.5*) also pitched eight shutdown innings in a 2-0 win over the Braves, allowing 7H 2BB 11K. Picked up from the Rangers last June, Holland is 5-3 3.77 51K in 10 starts this year.

Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley(23, 2*) went eight scoreless in a 6-0 win over the Rangers, allowing seven hits, 2BB and striking out five. The former hot prospect made eight starts last year and is 3-5 4.92 49K in 11 games this year.

White Sox SP Trevor Cahill(28, 3.5*) delievered a great effort in his first start with his new team, beating the Cubbies 1-0 while going 8IP 5H 0ER 0BB 11K. The White Sox hold a team option worth $13M for 2017 for the 4-3 3.44 52K hurler in 9 starts.

Jungmann dominated till he didn't anymore in the 7th and left in a 5-3 game... before Khris Davis put the baby out of reach with a GRAND SLAM in the bottom 8th.

News:
Astros SP Jon Niese(29, 2*) went the distance in a 9-1 win over the Rockies today, allowing 4H 1ER 3BB 6K. Acquired from the Mets for a minor prospect last may, Niese is 3-6 6.83 38K in 11 starts and was really struggling up to this start.

Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi(26, 3.5*) dominated game two of a two away, two home Subway Series against the Mets, winning 3-0 and going 8IP 7H 0ER 0BB 5K today. The right hander pitches with an impressive fastball and is the reigning Gold Glover in the AL. He is 7-4 3.93 50K in 11 starts this year.

I decided to not go on the road with the team... and therefore met Mark Attanasio for a little chat. He told me that he is still not sold that trading away Carlos Gomez was a good move looking at what our center fielders(Taylor: .235-3-11 .715OPS, Schafer: .120) have done, and what Carlos Gomez(.277-5-26 .756OPS) has done in LA. He is happy with our financials and the record of course... as well as with the overall offense.

I told him in return that I'm not sure if we can keep it up(the same talk as last year) as there are some guys that could regress going forward, namely Jimmy Nelson, and that we have not alot of depth in case of injury... see Ryan Braun. He also asked me about a couple of... tense moments with our manager.

I explained him that I won't sit down and watch how he uses Schafer(.120) and Inagaki(.186) as everyday starter and places Taylor and Luis Sardinas on the bench... and that I want Jungmann to start, not Nicasio... and that the rest of the front office agrees to that and those things have worked and 'may' have sparked this run.

He just told me that Ron has a contract till the end of 2018 and that he wants a good replacement if I make a move... and that he expects some trade movement up at the deadline... and we talked about possible outfielders, shortstops and starters on one year deals but he understood my wish to wait till July for that chatter.

The group has been pretty good since we axed Cliff Lee, however I see regression coming our way here. Nelson has been great... with a .209BABIP and 5.1BB/9 and a 4.08FIP. Our defense was pretty sharp these days... but this calls for a bump in the road soon. On the other end of the spectrum has been Wily Peralta, who has a .368BABIP and a 3.80FIP, so his season has been a story of bad luck...

What a difference a year makes... and some improved defense I guess. This group is 2nd in the NL and that is despite O'Flaherty down and now Hatcher down. Logan really likes the Nesbitt claim and in the end, it was a low risk claim as he has a total of 91 days of service time and at age 25, is dirt cheap for a guy that could be a setup man moving forward. We also have a ton of options in AAA that should be able to fill in if needed, both left and right handed.

Lucroy once again has cooled off a after good April and Logan flagged him with 3.5* overall ratings by now. So, his great and flashy offensive days seem to be over... we have a team option for 2017 for him... but after that we need an answer beyond 2017 some time down the road.

The production of our corners has been great. Yes, Mark Reynolds and Moustakas are platooning and yes Ron doesn't like it a bit... but I have to go with things that work and boy, this is WORKING as they hit their matchups... and we always have a big pinch hitter out there. I see the point Ron is making on Segura and his average defense at shortstop... tho he actually is doing fine looking at the pure fielding stats.

Extending Vargas doesn't mean that we gave up on Bird in any way... but I recognize a bargain and a hot hitter when I see one. IF Bird becomes a star, we can still look for some kind of deal for Vargas, but for now he has lifted this team to where it is with a ton of crucial homers...

Losing Ryan Braun again for a two week period is a bit unlucky... but Khris Davis got warm at the end of May and Tyrone Taylor has been... decent enough I guess. We have a ton of talent coming up here and hopefully some of them also come though...

Brandon Guyer, Logan Schafer, Nieuwenhuis, Kalish... the list of outfielders that are borderline major leaguers simply doesn't end for us as it seems and we can without any doubt trade one or two of those at the deadline...

2016 Week 9 Part 2

Week 9: 2vs +2@ Minnesota Twins, 3@ Philadelphia Phillies

June 1st

Milwaukee Brewers - Minnesota Twins 11-3
MIL SP Tyler Thornburg 6IP 2H 3R 3ER 4BB 4K
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 2-4 2R BB
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 2-5 2R 2RBI 2DB
MIL DH Mark Reynolds 2-5 2R 5RBI HR
MIL C Jonathan Lucroy 2-5 2RBI DB
MIL SS Jean Segura 2-4 R DB
HR MIL: Mark Reynolds(11)
HR MIN: none
W: Tyler Thornburg(4-5 3.13) L: Jake Reed(3-5 6.91) SV: Shawn Kelley(1 1.03)
The game was basically over after the 4th as we were ahead 9-0 after some wild innings... including a Mark Reynolds grand slam. Shawn Kelley got on after a rain-shortened outing of our starter... and got a nine-out save.

News:
Nationals SP Jordan Zimmerman(30, 4.5*) pitched a complete game 6-1 win against the Orioles, going 9IP 4H 1ER 1BB 8K. He has led the NL twice in wins during eight seasons with the Nationals and he is 7-2 2.07 59K in eleven games.

Braves 3B Rio Ruiz(22, 3/5*) continues to roll with a 4-hit game in a 9-4 win over the Blue Jays, going 4-4 4RBI BB 2DB. Ruiz was another piece in the Gattis deal and he and Mike Foltynewicz are now building blocks in Atlanta. He is batting .303-5-20 .930OPS in 34 games.

The Dodgers continue to have injury problems as SP Brett Anderson(28, 1/1.5*) will be lost for 4-5 months with a torn labrum. Anderson was 5-2 3.90 36K in nine starts in his second year in LA.

San Diego also got some bad news as rookie 2B Taylor Lindey(24, 2.5/3.5*) broke bone in his elbow and will be out for 4-5 months aswell. For 2016, he is .219-3-17 .580OPS in 44 games.

June 2nd
It was pouring today in Minneapolis... and so the Twins got away unscrached today and the game was resheduled to June 20th.

News:
Astros CF George Springer(26, 4*) participated in a wild 12-11 win over the Rockies, going 2-3 4R 3RBI 2BB 2HR in a game they won after being behind 1-10 after three. Last year's All-Star is batting .204-10-23 .752OPS in the bad third year.

Toronto will be without their franchise player for the next four weeks as RF Jose Bautista(35, 4.5*) strained his hammy in today's game against the Braves. The slugger was batting .260-16-39 .962OPS in 53 games prior to the injury.

June 3rd

Milwaukee Brewers – Philadelphia Phillies 3-4
MIL SP Josh Johnson 5IP 9H 3R 3ER 3BB 5K, 1-2

MIL LF Khris Davis 2-4

HR MIL: Mark Reynolds(12)
HR PHI: Scott Van Slyke(8)
W: Henderson Alvarez(4-3 5.58) L: Josh Johnson(6-4 3.38) SV: Ken Giles(13 1.93)
Logan gave up the final run for the Phillies so the rally sparked by Reynolds in the 8th fell short.

News:
Giants SP David Phelps(29, 2*) defeated the Cardinals with one run of cushion in a 1-0 game, going 8IP 3H 0ER 2BB 8K. He lost 14 games last year with the Marlins and therefore only got a $640k contract this offseason... and is 3-3 3.52 65K in 11 games since.

SP Brandon Morrow(31, 4*)'s 180IP bonus won't trigger for 2016... as the White Sox hurler will require elbow ligament reconstruction surgery and will be our for at least a year. Morrow was 3-3 5.46 73K with a whooping .398 BABIP in 12 starts.

Two AL East teams agreed to a trade as the Yankees added SP Chris Tillman(28, 2.5/3*, 3-8 4.41 46K) from the Orioles. Baltimore will get #169 prospect C Luis Torrens(20, 3.5*, S A) and prospect 3B John LaPrise(22, 1* HS, 1.5* OSA, A).

Boston also made a deal as they traded AAA 3B Garin Cecchini(25, 1/1.5* HS, 3.5* OSA, .288-0-18 AAA) to the Kansas City Royals, getting prospect SS Raul Mondesi(20, 2* HS, 1.5* OSA, AA) in return.

June 4th

Milwaukee Brewers – Philadelphia Phillies 8-5
MIL SP Wily Peralta 5IP 6H 4R 4ER 2BB 4K

HR PHI: Maikel Franco(8), Adam Lind(4)
W: Wily Peralta(4-3 5.58) L: Robbie Ross Jr.(3-6 6.63) SV: Juan Nicasio(1 3.42)
We jumped on Ross Jr. and their relievers for nine runs from the 4th to the 7th and our pen held up after another lackluster start by Wily Peralta. Jeffress was underway to another save... when it started raining... and Nicasio finished the game, getting the final out after 93min of rain.

News:
Cardinals LF Matt Holliday(36, 2.5*) collected career hit #2000 today on a 1-4 day at Busch Stadium. Holliday played for the Rockies 2004-2008 and joined the Redbirds after a short stint with Oakland. He is a career 4x Silver Slugger and 6x All-Star and is batting .302/.381/.511 289HR 1138RBI 2000H in 1767 career games.

Marlins SP Tommy Milone(29, 0.5*) dominated the Mets in a 3-0 win today, going 8IP 6H 0ER 0BB 4K. Milone signed a minor league deal this April after starting 16 games in Minnesota last year and is 4-1 2.13 29K in five starts in Miami.

Pirates 1B Josh E. Bell(23, 4/4.5*) had a big day at the plate in a 8-0 win over the Reds, going 4-5 2R 5RBI DB HR. Drafted in the 2nd round in 2011, Bell is batting .290-6-31 .852OPS in his first full season.

Orioles 1B Christian Walker(25, 1.5/2*) collected his second 2-HR game of the season, going 2-4 2R 3RBI 2HR in a 6-5 win over the Tigers. Drafted in the 4th round in 2012, the rumors say the Brewers made push for him last year but ultimately fell short... and now he is batting .277-8-21 .801OPS in 55 games.

Rangers RF Joey Gallo(22, 3.5/5*) drove in a career high seven runs in a 16-14 slugfest win over the Royals, going 3-5 3R 7RBI 2DB HR. Drafted 39th overall in 2012, the hard hitting RF/3B is batting .180-7-25 .628OPS in 54 games in his sophomore season.

June 5th

Milwaukee Brewers – Philadelphia Phillies 3-1
MIL SP Jimmy Nelson 7IP 6H 1R 0ER 1BB 7K

HR MIL: Kennys Vargas(19)
HR PHI: none
W: Jimmy Nelson(5-0 1.52) L: Jonathan Pettibone(3-4 4.52) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(15 3.04)
Nelson somehow kept on rolling and we were able to carve out three runs out of Pettibone late in the game to give him and the pen a lead.

News:
Blue Jays SP Daniel Norris(23, 1.5/2.5*) pitched a 1-hit beauty in a 4-0 win over the Padres, going 9IP 1H 0ER 4BB 2K, losing the no-hitter on a leadoff Will Venable double in the bottom of the 9th. Norris won 14 games last year and is 4-4 3.21 58K in 12 starts this year, but often times struggles with control.

Cubs SP Ian Kennedy(31, 4*) gave his pen a day off in a 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks, going 9IP 3H 1ER 1BB 9K today. Lifted by his 2B Javier Baez(23, 5*, .235-8-22), who had a 2-3 2R 4RBI BB 2HR day, Kennedy improved to 4-4 2.94 82K in 12 starts.

Athletics SP Chris Bassitt(27, 2/2.5*) dominated through 8.1IP against the White Sox in a 3-0 win, allowing only 4 hits, no walks and striking out seven. The reigning AL Cy Young winner seems to have prooved... that he was a one-hit wonder as he is 3-6 4.93 43K in 12 starts this year.

Red Sox SP Matt Barnes(25, 2/2.5*) was pulled after eight innings with a 1-hitter going in a 1-0 win over the Yankees, allowing only 1BB and striking out eight in the process. After splitting time between pen and rotation last year, Barnes is a dominant 8-1 2.22 93K pitcher in 13 starts this year.

The Orioles went bananas in a 18-4 victory over the Tigers and two guys had a big hand in this one. LF Evan Gattis(29, 3.5*, .238-15-40 .751OPS) went 3-3 5R 5RBI 2BB 2HR and 1B Christian Walker(25, 1.5/2*, .286-10-27 .851OPS) continues to tear the cover off the ball with a 3-4 2R 6RBI BB DB 2HR day.

Pirates 2B Jung-Ho Kang(29, 2.5*) went deep twice to put the finishing touches on a four game sweep of the Reds in a 16-1 win, going 2-5 2R 5RBI 2HR. Kang joined the league prior to 2015 on a 5y/$16.25M deal and is in his second year, batting .246-7-34 .756OPS in 57 games.

2016 First Year Player Draft

Round 1 Pick 14: Milwaukee Brewers select 1B Griffin Keller(18, 4.5*) out of High School
The best consensus pick out there. Not your typical 1B, more of a contact OBP guy with 20HR power. Good teammate, can hold his own at first. Wants $2M, $130 over slot. Scout recommendation and I agree.

Round 2 Pick 14: Milwaukee Brewers select SP Alex Speas(18, 3* HS, 4.5* OSA) out of High School.
92-94mph heater with a curve and a change, good control, decent movement. Not a off the charts makeup but good enough. Both the OSA and Logan like him and he once again was the scout recommendation and I agree.

Round 3 Pick 14: Milwaukee Brewers select 3B Bo Bichette(18, 4* HS, 4.5* OSA) out of High School.
Can play 1B,SS,3B. Should end up with a high OBP, but will also whiff alot. Decent speed, decent contact, OSA things he could end up with alot of doubles. Scout recommendation and I agree.

Round 4 Pick 14: Milwaukee Brewers select C Cody Roberts(19, 4* HS, 2* OSA) out of Georgia Tech College(Atlanta, GA).
Has a great arm behind the plate, good guy to have in the clubhouse, should work hard. Hit .295-9-43 .827OPS against great competition.

Round 5 Pick 14: Milwaukee Brewers select SP Robert Peto(17, 2* HS, 4* OSA) out of High School.
Groundballer, already 88-90mph, fastball, curveball, slider, change with already good movement and good control. High stamina.

Round 6 Pick 14: Milwaukee Brewers select 2B Michael Massey(18, 3.5* HS, 5* OSA) out of High School.
Very hard to sign. Switch hitter, projects as 2B, OBP guy. Never takes a play off, can run a bit.

From here on, I let Logan have his way... as we were definitly clicking all the way and it seems we are on the same page here.

2016 Week 10

Week 10: 3vs Oakland Athletics, 4vs Philadelphia Phillies

June 6th

According to reports in the local press(Milwaukee Star...), the Brewers are entangled with the Rangers about a starter... as well as with the Blue Jays(starter) and the Twins(bat). No deal was finished, but it seems like K.C. Martin is looking for a move. (The rumors)

Oakland Athletics - Milwaukee Brewers 9-7
MIL SP Tyler Thornburg 4IP 6H 8R 7ER 2BB 5K
MIL C Jonathan Lucroy 1-3 2R 3RBI HR
MIL SS Jean Segura 1-3 RBI
MIL RF Logan Schafer 2-4 3RBI DB
HR OAK: Joe Wendle(8), Ike Davis(6), Matt Joyce(2)
HR MIL: Jonathan Lucroy(4)
W: Dan Otero(2-0 5.31) L: Tyler Thornburg(4-6 3.82) SV: Taylor Thompson(1 2.84)
Thorny had nothing today and got clobbered for homer after homer after getting a 5-0 lead handed to him after the 1st.

News:
D'backs C Dallas Tarleton(28, 1*) continued a hot rookie season in a 6-5 win over the Cardinals, going 2-2 2R 3RBI BB 2HR. Tarleton was a career minor leaguer until making the team this year, batting .277-7-27 .781OPS in 44 games.

Yankees 1B C.J. Cron(26, 4*) continues to mash for the Bronx Bombers, going 4-5 3R 4RBI TP HR in a 15-3 win over the Indians. Getting Cron from the Angels last year payed huge dividents this year as he is batting .283-14-38 .828OPS in 56 games.

The Red Sox announced that veteran closer Koji Uehara(41, 4.5*, 2-1 14SV 1.19) is out for the season with a fractured elbow suffered on a comebacker to the mound yesterday.

June 7th

Oakland Athletics - Milwaukee Brewers 5-2
MIL SP Josh Johnson 4.2IP 5H 4R 4ER 3BB 3K, 1-1

HR OAK: none
HR MIL: none
W: Sonny Gray(4-5 3.29) L: Josh Johnson(6-5 3.61) SV: Sean Doolittle(13 2.55)
We simply didn't come through against Gray to rally for Johnson...

News:
Nationals SP Jordan Zimmerman(30, 4.5*) continues to roll long with a complete game 12-1 win over the Mets, allowing 8H 1ER 0BB with 4K. Zimmerman is tied for the NL lead in wins with a 8-2 1.95 63K campaign. He got some quality run support by their young CF Michael A. Taylor(25, 4.5*, .242-7-27), who went 2-4 2R 3RBI BB 2HR.

Dodgers SP Chad Bilingsley(31, 1.5*) pitched eight innings of 1-hit ball in a 5-0 win over the Padres, walking two and whiffing 8. He returned to the team where he spent eight seasons to start his career as a free agent on a 1y deal and is 5-3 2.83 38K in 10 starts so far.

Cubs SP Jacob Turner(25, 1.5*) was in control against the Angels today, winning 5-1 while pitching a 8IP 2H 0ER 1BB 4K beauty. Turner spend time with the Tigers and Marlins before joining the Cubs in 2014 and he is 3-3 3.53 52K in 11 starts in 2016.

June 8th

Oakland Athletics - Milwaukee Brewers 3-5

HR OAK: none
HR MIL: none
W: Juan Nicasio(3-0 3.23) L: Jacob deGrom(3-7 3.97) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(16 2.93)
We gave Nicasio the start as we needed to do something to keep our manager happy... and he got a 4-run 3rd and rolled with it.

News:
Reds 1B Joey Votto(32, 4.5*) led his club to a 13-3 win over the Rockies, going 2-3 3R 3RBI 2BB 2HR. The 4x All-Star and 2010 NL MvP is having another rock solid season, going .288-11-27 .922OPS in 60 games.

Yankees 1B C.J. Cron(26, 4*) hit around again today in a 9-8 win over the Indians, going 2-3 2R 5RBI 2BB 2HR and improving to bat .285-16-43 .954OPS in 58 games.

MIL CF Tyrone Taylor 1-4
HR PHI: Maikel Franco(9)
HR MIL: none
W: Robbie Ross Jr.(4-6 5.90) L: Wily Peralta(3-7 3.97)
We once again got nothing working today...

News:
D'backs SP Patrick Corbin(26, 3*) went the distance today in a 5-1 win over the Cardinals, going 9IP 4H 1ER 2BB 8K. The lefty and 2013 All-Star returned from Tommy John last year and was good, but struggled a bit in 2016 with a 4-4 4.41 53K campaign in 13 starts.

Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg(27, 5*) went eight scoreless in a 3-0 win over the poor Mets, allowing four hits, 1BB and striking out eight. After winnning only ten games last year, he is 6-1 2.30 100K in 13 starts.

Dodgers CF Joc Pederson(24, 4.5*) hit two over the fence today in a 7-1 win over the Braves, going
2-4 2R 5RBI 2HR. Apart from today, Pederson continued to struggle in his sophomore year, batting .198-9-33 .678OPS in 59 games.

Padres SS Trea Turner(22, 1.5/3.5*) slugged his team to a 7-2 victory in Colorado, going 4-4 4R 3RBI BB DB 2HR. Named the #92 prior to 2015, this is his rookie season and he is batting .333-3-5 in 13 games so far.

W: Jimmy Nelson(6-0 1.62) L: Jonathan Pettibone(3-5 4.94)
We came out firing with the Moose being loose today... nice and solid win.

News:
Rays LF Kevin Kiermaier(26, 4.5/5*) saw a 21-game hitting streak end today in a 4-1 win over the Orioles. Kiermaier was a 31st round discovery in 2010 that developed into one of the better outfielders and won a Gold Glove last year. He is batting .350-4-25 .939OPS in 46 games.

June 11th

Philadelphia Phillies - Milwaukee Brewers 4-3
MIL SP Tyler Thornburg 5.1IP 6H 4R 2ER 5BB 8K

HR PHI: none
HR MIL: none
W: Severino Gonzalez(4-2 6.54) L: Tyler Thornburg(4-7 3.79) SV: Ken Giles(14 1.78)
Thorny's outing was derailed by a crucial error by Segura and we didn't hit their junkyard starter anyways.

News:
Padres RF Wil Myers(25, 4.5*) drove in four runs in a 9-1 win over the Rockies, going 4-4 R 4RBI today. Acquired from the Rays in a 3-team deal in the 2014/15 offseason, Myers is batting .314-9-42 .874OPS in 60 games.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Rangers announced that SP Yu Darvish(29, 4.5*) will be out of the year with shoulder inflammation. He was 3-3 5.37 78K in 13 starts, but despite this subpar numbers regarded as ace of the staff... and there was some interest in his services including the Brewers.

June 12th

Philadelphia Phillies - Milwaukee Brewers 1-2
MIL SP Josh Johnson 8IP 3H 1R 1ER 3BB 9K
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 1-3 R RBI HR
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 3-4 R
MIL C Jonathan Lucroy 2-3 RBI 2DB
HR PHI: none
HR MIL: Luis Sardinas(2)
W: Josh Johnson(7-5 3.40) L: David Buchanan(4-7 6.51) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(17 2.73)
Johnson out a stop to the Phillies and we somehow carved out two runs to get away with a 4-game split.

After the game, the Brewers announced that 1B/3B Luis Jimenez(28, 1*) was waived and DFA'd and RF Ryan Braun(32, 4*) was activated from the DL.

News:
Rays SP Chris Archer(27, 2/2.5*) was dealing today in a 2-0 win over the Orioles, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out 10. After posting a 5.16ERA and leading the league in walks issued, he is 3-3 3.38 40K in 13 games and seven starts.

The Braves added a once promising outfield bat in CF Jake Marisnick(25, 2/2.5*, .206-2-4 34G) from the Houston Astros, who demoted him to AAA this week. The huge surprise however is what is going to Houston... #7 prospect SP Kolby Allard(18, 2* HS, 5* OSA, R), the 14th overall pick of the 2015 draft.

Butler spend the first eight years of his career in Kansas City, winning a Silver Slugger Award in 2012, but also pulled his weight since coming over to Oakland, batting .295-3-28 .789OPS in 70 games.

Giants 1B Travis Ishikawa(32, 1*) drove in five in a 6-1 win over the Padres today, going 4-4 R 5RBI DB HR. Best known for his walkoff shot in the 2014 NLCS, Ishikawa is batting .377-3-10 in 18 games mostly as backup.

Royals 1B Eric Hosmer(26, 1/1.5*) had a two homer game today in a 7-4 win over the Indians, going 3-5 2R 5RBI 2HR. While he is a 2x Gold Glover, his offensive skills seem to be gone as he is batting .224-5-28 .643OPS in 68 games.

Blue Jays C Russell Martin(33, 3.5*) went yard twice in a close 7-6 win over Colorado, going 2-3 2R 4RBI 2HR. While his offense didn't really arrive in Toronto, his defense has been outstanding. He is batting .224-7-26 .674OPS in 62 games.

Interlude: Trade
It took some time to iron out the details, but the Brewers and Blue Jays have agreed to a swap. Toronto will get 28-year-old minor league RF Ryan Kalish, 25-year-old minor league RHRP Tyler Wagner, 23-year-old minor league RHSP Dylan Bundy and 28-year-old minor league SS Hector Gomez with Milwaukee receiving 23-year-old RHSP Aaron Sanchez in return. A source close to the trade talks said the two clubs were initially looking to make a bigger deal, but discussions broke off late last night. The two sides reconvened early today and eventually settled on this deal.

This should help our rotation short term and hopefully long term. Aaron Sanchez(23, 3.5/4*) was a cheap option... due to the fact that he is coming off a torn labrum suffered in 2015 and is regarded as fragile by the medical staff. Still, he can bring it and had a great start to 2016 and the asking price was pretty fair for a pitcher with his skills.

With Ryan Kalish(28, 1*), we say goodbye to one of our gazillion outfielders luring around in AAA. He provided some quality AB's last year with a .302 average, but there was no place for him in our team. Wagner(25, 0.5*) never quite panned out as starter or reliever and at age 25, there was not alot of upside hidden here.

The big name in this deal... is SP Dylan Bundy(23, 0.5/2.5*) who we saw as a cornerstone going forward one year ago... when we got him and Harvey for a package of veterans. In the end, it turned out that a.) Harvey seems to be the better prospect and b.) Bundy has more of a #4 upside. With all our pitching prospects, that means he was expendable and the fact that he got a $1.25M contract going didn't help him.

The final piece was SS Hector Gomez(28, 1.5*). He was blocked at 3B by Mous and Reynolds and at short by Segura and Sardinas, and while he would've been a nice piece of depth... he wasn't happy and this way, we got something big out of him.

To make room for Sanchez, Angel Nesbitt was sent to AAA... for a day as we need Jungmann to start tomorrow... before we sent HIM down to AAA. And this way, Ron can finally stop to slot in Nicasio as starter on monday... Jungmann on thursday... Nicasio on wednesday... and so on.

The Cubs are coming up hard with their young core and veteran additions... this is a interesting series for sure as they are 3.5G behind us.

News:
Indians SP Garrett Richards(28, 4.5*) pitched a NO-HITTER today in a 1-0 win over the Orioles, facing 27 batters but walking Jonathan Schoop(before erasing him on a DP). Richards struck out five today and while Cleveland is 33-44, trading for Richards seems to have payed off as he is 7-5 2.65 89K in 15 starts and is the fourth pitcher to throw a no-hitter since the start of 2015

Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos(24, 4/4.5*) saw a 25-game hitting streak end today in a 4-2 win over the Angels. Castellanos, wildly regarded as one of the more talented 3B going forward, is batting .306-10-41 .882OPS in 68 games in his third year in Detroit.

Kudos to our pen that kept the game in line after Thorny left... and kudos to the Moose who went over the fence twice to keep it tied at 3... so that a wild pitch could plate the winning run in the 8th. Now we are waiting for a call from our team trainer...

News:
The Pirates won 9-3 tonight in Seattle and two guys had a big hand in this one. Big talent SS Alen Hanson(23, 2.5/4*, .228-8-36 .633OPS) broke out for a 4-5 3R 5RBI DB 2HR day and CF Gregory Polanco(24, 4.5*, .332-8-36 .930OPS) assembled together a 3-5 2R 4RBI 2HR performance.

In a controverse discussed move, the Cardinals acquired reigning AL Cy Young Winner SP Chris Bassitt(27, 2*, 6-7 4.13 65K) from the Oakland A's together with prospect SS Yairo Munoz(21, 3* HS, 1.5* OSA, A). The A's get RF Stephen Piscotty(25, 4*, .235-5-19 .672OPS) back in this deal... who got the better end in this one...

The Phillies decided to part ways with RHRP Bryan Shaw(28, 1.5*, 2-2 1SV 2.72) while the Rays were willing to give up prospect C David Rodriguez(20, 1*, R) for him in a minor deal.

June 30th

The Brewers were happy to announce that SP Tyler Thornburg(27, 2.5*) came up with nothing more serious than a forearm cramp and will get his next start delayed by a couple of days.

W: Neil Ramirez(4-3 2.41) L: Juan Nicasio(3-2 3.41) SV: Edward Mujica(2 3.12)
'The wind was blowing out to left“ Yes, indeed. Sanchez had his problems and we had to use our poor pen once again... which worked until Alex Gordon homered top 12th and we had no answer left.

News:
Blue Jays SP Chad Jenkins(28 1.5*) pitched eight scoreless in Boston to lead his team to a 4-0 win, allowing four hits, one walk while striking out four. Jenkins spent most of his time in the pen the last years and is 2-2 4.44 17K in 24.1IP and 13G/2GS.

Indians SP Sam Dyson(28, 3.5*) dominated the Orioles in a 4-2 win, only giving way to their their pen...that gave up two earned in the 9th. Dyson, who normally struggles to go deep into games, allowed four hits, no walks and struck out five to improve to 7-5 3.13 72K in 16 starts.

With the calendar flipping over to July, Mark, myself, our head scout Logan White, assistant GM Kevin Towers and manager Ron Roenicke met after the latest loss to the Cubs to discuss the strategy going forward. Mark and I remained quiet and let the camps form. As expected by me, Logan defended his farm system like a lion and wanted no part of a big selling spree, stating it's 'bold to go all-in now, but even bolder to wait till our farm comes up and starts run for the playoffs'.

Ron and Kevin pleaded their case for a busy July, listing the big trade targets and how they would help us... tho Ron was a bit more hesitent and stated that he 'sees no need into adding a dozen guys and disrupt the tesm chemistry.' After 15 minutes of heated discussion, Mark ended the talk with a loud "OK", looked straight at me and said: "K.C., you pretty much brought the team where it is, who domyou think is right here?"

"Both. I agree with Kevin and Ron that this situation after 3 month of play and with the Cardinals out of contention barring a wonder, is too good to stand pat like we did last year and end up melting down like the 2014 team.. I also agree with Logan that our farm is waay to promising to deal away big parts and the crown jewels for this year's push. We don't want to end up like the Twins... an empty farm system, in the division cellar and underway to lose $15M."

"So, whats your proposed couse of action?" Mark asked quickly. "Dealing from our strength. We have a good young center fielder in Tyrone Taylor in the majors and Margot, Williams and Daz Cameron in the minors. I think we could deal Williams or Margot or both if the pieces coming back are right. In the corners, we have Braun and Davis up and Coultier and Papi in the farm... and I have a deal in mind I worked on while I visited the minor league teams." That I kept secret for weeks...

Logan was a bit puzzled by that statement but had to agree that we can make a move with those prospects and that (heavy-hearded), he would add a single A starter like Kodi Medeiros to that list. What I would target was the biggest question he had tho. I worked on that with Kevin and he summarized it quickly.

"With this limitations in tradable assets, we may ne able to get one big piece and maybe an expiring contract guy to help us out. That being said, the big piece has to be somebody in the twenties with team control left, so think more about Matt Harvey and Kevin Gausman with 3 years of arbitration left then Adam Wainwright and Zach Greinke with two more years and $50M+ left on their contract. The minor piece could be a reliever like Chapman or Mike Dunn or, if the Jays are willing to talk more, a guy like Jose Bautista, who is a free agent this winter."

Mark nodded and said he liked that move... and with the clock closing in to 1p.m., he ended the meeting shortly there after... but asked me to stay for a minute. "K.C., you mentioned 2014... is the team overachieving that much in your eyes?"

"Well, looking at preseason predictions, Logan's scouting reports and even the national press, it is a valid question. We have won alot of close 2-1 like games where good pitching picked up a bad offense and some 8-6 like games where it was the other way round. With another piece in addition to Aaron Sanchez, I would feel much more comfortable going forward, regardless if arm or bat." - "When will you start the dealing?" - "ASAP. Expect something as early as this week. Kevin and I separately explored some worthwhile deals that should come together rather quickly now. While I don't want to blow the farm, I don't want to be known as the guy that did nothing to help a playoff push twice now."

The lone guy on the MLB staff that has a crosshair on his back... is Wily Peralta... tho there are alot of walks in this group here and I still think Nelson is a implosion waiting to happen despite a 5-0 June... the guy is walking 4.3 per nine.

Trade options:
Orioles SP Kevin Gausman(25, 4.5*) 6-7 2.76 89K 17GS 120.2IP 3.71FIP $507,5k(arb)
Royals SP Drew Pomeranz(27, 3.5*) 3-9 5.34 78K 17GS 91IP 4.14FIP, $1.66M(arb.)
Mets SP Matt Harvey(27, 4*) 5-7 2.88 83K 16GS 100IP $606k(arb.)

Lots of costly veterans, #4/#5 starters that are basically equal to Peralta and some guys as costly as Gausman with similar stuff... Those guys would cost alot tho... and Pomeranz is borderline useful as it seems. There is a good chance that if our first offers don't get the other teams to bite... we move on and look for a bat.

I don't think we have a reason to mess with this group... that is second in the NL in ERA despite pitching ALOT of innings lately. Rosscup is doing well in AAA and he is not the only guy putting up solid numbers down there. The urge for another closer... kinda disappeared after 12 scoreless innings in June.

The one position of... not exactly need but trouble would be shortstop. Neither me nor Kevin found a good fit to trade for but it was Logan who asked the crucial question... why not go to Arcia now and maybe even flip Segura for something more useful...

The corners are pretty much set with Mous/Reynolds and Vargas and Sardinas has a every day spot anyways right now. There is chirping about Bird being available for the right piece... I wouldn't believe everything the Milwaukee Star writes folks...

The whole starting ourfield has heated up and especially Tyrone Taylor doing well comes in handy for me... tho Ron is still making a fool out of himself telling everybody that Schafer is the better outfielder... annoying the crap out of everybody. Ryan Braun has some slack to pick up I have to admit.

The backups have been very unimpressive but as soon as Schafer was chased out of the starting lineup, they didn't REALLY hurt us. Looking on the market, RF Jose Bautista(35, 4.5*, .264-16-41) may be available... but only plays right field and apart from him and Carlos Gomez(sure...) there are not alot of obvious options.

2016 Week 13 Part 2

Week 13: 3vs Chicago Cubs, 3@ Pittsburgh Pirates

July 1st

Milwaukee Brewers – Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3(11)
MIL SP Wily Peralta 7.1IP 5H 2R 2ER 1BB 8K
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 2-5 R BB SB(2)
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 1-4 2R 2RBI BB HR
MIL SS Jean Segura 2-5 R RBI SB(7)
HR MIL: Mike Moustakas(14)
HR PIT: Josh E. Bell(7)
W: Will Smith(3-1 3.30) L: Tony Watson(2-2 2.35) SV: Angel Nesbitt(1 1.15)
Our poor pen had to hold the fort for 3.2 innings tho it should've been only 1.2IP as Will Smith blew the save in the 9th... Yet, Ryan Braun broke a 0-5 spell with a RBI-infield hit to win it in the 11th...

News:
White Sox SP Trevor Cahill(28, 3/3.5*) pitched a NO-HITTER today in a 1-0 win over the Indians, allowing no walks, but hitting two batters while striking out six. Cahill was an All-Star back in 2010 with the Athletics but bounced around between Arizona, Atlanta and now Chicago after that. He is 7-4 2.99 83K in 15 starts and this was the fifth no-hitter of this dynasty.

Rays SP Matt Moore(27, 3.5/4.5*) dominated Detroit over 8.1IP in a 8-0 win, allowing only five hits, no walks and 4K. The lefty and 2013 All-Star has been great this year, going 7-6 2.84 116K in 17 starts.

Royals SP Kris Medlen(30, 0.5*) put zeroes on the board for eight innings in a 3-0 win over the Twins, going 8IP 4H 0ER 2BB 1K. Medlen played most of his career with Atlanta but left after Tommy John surgery in 2014, and signed with the Royals prior to the 2015 season. He is 5-5 4.2338K in 21G/11GS so far.

The Cardinals seemingly have decided to call it quits and have sent SP Lance Lynn(29, 3*, 5-4 2.41 89K) to the Mariners, grabbing propsect SS Christopher Torres(18, 3* HS, 1.5* OSA, R) and prospect SS Rafael Fernandez(22, 1.5* HS, 1* OSA, A) in return.

Cleveland and Texas dealed assets today as the Indians unloaded 3B Lonnie Chisenhall(27, 2*, .216-7-32) and $2.88M in cash to the Rangers for AAA LF Trever Adams(27, 1*).

July 2nd

The international FA signing period began today but as we exceeded the budget by a mile last year, we are only allowed to spent $250k per player... and offered some deals to some guys with good makeup that should be rather cheap.

Milwaukee Brewers – Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1
MIL SP Jimmy Nelson 7IP 5H 1R 1ER 3BB 5K
MIL 3B Mike Moustakas 1-3 R BB TP SB(2)
MIL C Jonathan Lucroy 1-3 R RBI DB

HR MIL: Mark Reynolds(17)
HR PIT: none
W: Jimmy Nelson(10-0 1.63) L: Jared Hughes(1-3 3.50) SV: Corey Knebel(2 3.03)
Hopefully, this outing by Nelson will be able to get our pen back into shape... The game was scoreless until both teams scored a run apiece in the 7th... with us adding on in the 8th and 9th.

News:
Mets SP Matt Harvey(27, 4*) pitched a complete game 8-1 win over the Nationals, going 9IP 8H 1ER 0BB 11K and improving to 6-7 2.72 93K in 17 starts. He got some quality AB's from his RF Cesar Puello(25, 1.5*) who surprised EVERYBODY with a 5-53R 3RBI 2DB TP day, batting .261-3-20 .726OPS in 39 games this season.

Angels SP Jered Weaver(33, 0.5*) also pitched a complete game win today, beating Houston 6-1 while pitching a 9IP 3H 1ER 1BB 2K beauty. Other than that game, the 3x All-Star has been scuffling this year, posting a 2-9 6.14 42K season in 15 starts.

The Twins acquired AAA SP Asher Wojcierchowski(27, 1.5*) as well as the $507.5K needed to pay him from the Rangers, sending prospect C Austin Rei(22, 1.5* HS, 1* OSA ) back to Texas.

July 3rd

The Milwaukee Star published some inside information, stating that the Brewers are working hard to acquire some pitching from the New York Mets. Details were not available but experts say that it must be either Harvey, Wheeler or Matz they target.

Milwaukee Brewers – Pittsburgh Pirates 1-2
MIL SP Josh Johnson 7IP 5H 0R 0ER 2BB 7K, 1-2 RBI

Johnson was perfect and actually left with a 1-0 lead... but Shawn Kelley conceded a 2-run shot to Pedro Alvarez and our offense was in no shape today.

News:
Rockies CF David Dahl(22, 4.5/5*) saw a 22-game hitting streak come to an end in a 11-16 loss to the Giants today. Named the #89 prospect prior to the 2015 season, he is in his sophomore year batting .347-9-36 .901OPS with 13/26SB in 79 games.

2016 Week 14

Week 14: 4@ Washington Nationals, 3vs New York Mets

July 4th

Milwaukee Brewers – Washington Nationals 5-3

Thorny allowed a couple of runs early and he was gone when Braun tied it with a 2-run shot in the 6th... and got us ahead with a 2-run shot in the 8th.

News:
Brewers RF Ryan Braun(32, 4*) drove in four in a 5-3 win over the Nationals today, going 2-3 2R 4RBI BB 2HR. Braun, a 4x Silver Slugger and 2011 NL MvP has been fighting injuries the last three years(as well as a suspension) but is batting .272-12-42 .753OPS in 67 games this year.

Reds 3B Ryan Rua(26, 3.5*) bashed two over the wall at home today, beating the Giants 7-1 with a 2-3 3R 3RBI BB 2HR day. Rua came over for LHRP Sean Marshall and a prospect in July 2015 and is batting .219-8-33 .625OPS in 82 games this year.

July 5th

Milwaukee Brewers – Washington Nationals 0-3
MIL SP Aaron Sanchez 6IP 3H 1R 1ER 6BB 6K

HR MIL: none
HR WSH: none
W: Blake Treinen(4-9 4.34) L: Aaron Sanchez(6-8 2.86) SV: Addison Reed(18 2.45)
Sanchez wasn't exactly bad and kept the damage to one run... but we didn't get anything going with the bats.

News:
Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw(28, 5*) had his A-stuff today most of the time and pitched a complete game 10-2 victory in Colorado, going 9IP 5H 2ER 0BB 10K. The 4x Cy Young winner is 8-3 2.50 118K in 16 starts this year.

D'backs SP Josh Collmenter(30, 1*) was masterful against the Mets today in a 2-0 win, going 8IP 5H 0ER 0BB 7K. He has been in the organisation since getting drafted in 2007 in the 15th round but provided little more than innings this year, going 4-8 4.82 80K in 17 starts.

White Sox CF Adam Eaton(27, 2.5*) and his team had a 18-hit barrage of Orioles pitching going in a 13-3 win, going a perfect 5-5 2R RBI TP SB. The speedy outfieder is in his third season in Chicago, but is struggling with a .239-1-23 .642OPS 7/11SB campaign in 74 games.

Baltimore traded away one of their starters in SP Matt Shoemaker(29, 2/2.5*, 3-6 4.37 69K) to the the Braves, getting prospect RF Chandler Taylor(20, 2* HS, 1.5* OSA, R) and prospect SS Johan Carmargo(22, 1*, AA) in return.

A similar deal happened when Boston dealed SP Zeke Spruill(26, 2/3.5*, 4-3 4.42 49K) to the Giants, getting prospect CF Mikey Edie(19, 1*, R) and RF Gustavo Cabrera(20, 1.5* HS, 3.5* OSA, S A) in return.

July 6th

Interlude: Trades

The Milwaukee Brewers addressed a concern today, coming to terms with the Baltimore Orioles on a trade that will send 20-year-old minor league LHSP Kodi Medeiros, 24-year-old minor league LF Victor Roache, 22-year-old minor league RF Clint Coulter and 26-year-old SS Jean Segura from the Brewers to the Orioles in exchange for 25-year-old RHP Kevin Gausman.

The goal was to acquire a frontline starter that has some team control, and after two weeks of talks and, after the calendar flipped to July, serious negotiations, we netted SP Kevin Gausman(25, 4.5*) from the Orioles. He was the 4th overall pick in the 2012 draft and made his debut in 2013 between rotation and pen. After going 7-7 3.57 in 20 starts in 2014, he won 16 starts last year and has been pretty good for a bad team this year.

In this deal, the Brewers say goodbye to LHSP Kodi Medeiros(2, 1* HS, 3* OSA). He was the 14th overall pick by us in the 2014 draft, but looking back, neither the old nor the new scouting department saw a top of the rotation upside and with us being stacked with pitching prospects, he was the guy we agreed on.

Victor Roache(24, 2.5* HS, 1.5* OSA) and Clint Coulter(22, 4*) are two of our better corner outfield prospects and especially Coulter was already close. Both players were high picks in our 2012 draft class, however with Mike Papi in AA and another deal that happened later(see below), we can cope with this loss.

The heartbreaking piece in this deal however... was SS Jean Segura(26, 1.5/2.5*), a Brewer since 2012 and a 2013 All-Star. He never really repeated that year and was not quite the defender we hoped he would be. He will leave the Brewers having played in 549 games, batting .265/.307/.365 with 25HR, 157RBI and 92/123SB. He was the reason this deal took so long to work out.

-----

Milwaukee and Minnesota announced some roster changes today as the Brewers acquired 25-year-old LF Oswaldo Arcia from the Twins in exchange for 19-year-old minor league CF Dazmon Cameron, 29-year-old 2B Hirokichi Inagaki, 21-year-old minor league CF Manuel Margot, 34-year-old minor league SS Alexei Ramirez and $396,000 in cash. Representatives from both teams say they are pleased with the deal.

While I was visiting our minor league system, I made a stop in Minnesota to talk about the makeup game last month... and while I was chatting casually with Gerardo Soto... the name Oswaldo Arcia(25, 5* HS, 4.5* OSA) fell... and he told me his asking price... and I was into it right away. This will add a dangerous left handed bat into our lineup, something we have been missing apart from Mike Moustakas.

What we had to pay... was last year's first rounder Daz Cameron(19, 3* HS, 4* OSA) who has drawn massive interest in the league and I'm kinda sad to have to let him go. 2B Hirokichi Inagaki(29, 3* HS, 2*OSA) has simply not worked out and I doubt these scouting ratings right away.

CF Manuel Margot(21, 2/4* HS, 3.5/4* OSA) would've been a defensive force and a speedy option, but I personally doubt his ability to be consistant with the bat... and Alexei Ramirez(34, 1*) was signed on a cheap minor league deal anyways.

----

In order to fill out the roster, we traded RHRP Chris Perez(31, 0.5*) to the New York Mets, acquiring 3B/2B Luis Valbuena(30, 1.5*). In addition, SP Wily Peralta was optioned to AAA, and AAA SS Orlando Arcia(21, 1.5/3.5*) was called up to the majors to man shortstop. OF Brandon Guyer(30, 2*) was waived and DFA'd.

Milwaukee Brewers – Washington Nationals 7-1

There still was baseball to be played(that I didn't see... sleeping in my office), and controversely Gausman was asked to start as well as Oswaldo Arcia and Luis Valbuena... and things went surprisingly well as Gausman dominated today.

News:
Phillies SP Robbie Ross Jr.(27, 1.5*) put a stop to the Pirates today, winning 3-0 and pitching a 8IP 3H ER 2BB 2K beauty. Ross Jr. originally was a 2nd rounder in 2008 by the Rangers and was traded to Boston and later to the Phillies for Cody Asche. He is a decent 7-7 4.65 72K in 18 starts this year.

Astros SS Carlos Correa(21, 4.5/5*) collected a multi HR game today in a 5-2 over Tampa Bay, going 3-3 2R 2RBI BB 2HR. The young phenom and former #7 prospect struggled last season with a .206BA in 75 games, but is on a better path this year, batting .277-7-38 .761OPS in 81 games.

We sparked some trading today as the Rays added LHRP Tim Collins(26, 3.5/4*, 2-2 2SV 4.56 25.2IP) from the Kansas City Royals. Kansas added #32 prospect SP Brent Honeywell(21, 1.5* HS, 4,5* OSA, R).

The Astros finally found a taker for SS Jed Lowrie(32, 1.5*, .257-2-21 .651) and his $7.5M, dealing him to the Angels. In exchange, they got AAA CF Billy Burns(26, 1*. .268-1-15 19SB AAA) and prospect C Angel Molina(18, 1.5* HS, 1* OSA, R).

July 7th

Milwaukee Brewers – Washington Nationals 5-4

Vargas jumped on Fister for a 1st inning 2-run homer but Nelson was singled to death in a four run 5th for the Nats... and it was a Luis Valbuena RBI-double off their closer that won us the game top 9th. Orlando Arcia also collected his first MLB hit today.

News:
Rangers SP Jake Thompson(22, 1/1.5* HS, 1.5/4* OSA) pitched a complete game 6-hitter today, winning 8-0 against the Mariners and allowing no walks while collecting 5K's. The young right hander has spend his rookie year between pen and rotation, going 3-6 2SV 4.96 44K in 23G/11GS and 74.1IP.

Dodgers RF Yasiel Puig(25, 4.5/5*) supported his teams pitching with a great night in a 5-0 win in Colorado, going 3-3 2R 3RBI 2BB 2HR. The 2x All-Star and reigning Silver Slugger has been a consistant 5+WAR player since joining the league, batting .304-13-54 .860OPS in 83 games.

Astros LF Preston Tucker(26, 3.5*) helped his team win a close 8-6 battle against the Rays, going 2-3 3R 3RBI BB 2HR. Drafted in the 7th round in 2012, this is his rookie season and he already has two grand slams in 82 games, batting .248-17-55 .804OPS.

In a deal that will shake up the NL East quite a bit, the Braves added OF Carlos 'CarGo' Gonzalez(30, 4*, .269-12-41 .777OPS) from the Rockies. To get him, they dealed over four prospects, starting with 3B Dustin Peterson(21, 3.5* HS, 2* OSA, A), as well as C Kevin Reiher(22, 1*, A), SP Chad Sobotka(22, 1.5* HS, 2* OSA, A) and C Ruben Perez(20, 1*, R).

W: Jenrry Mejia(4-2 2.84) L: Juan Nicasio(3-3 3.51) SV: Josh Edgin(5 2.43)
Johnson was great, but Knebel allowed the tying run and Nicasio served up a 2-run homer to Chris Davis, and our rally in the bottom 11th against Edgin fell short.

News:
Indians SP Allen Webster(26, 3/4*) pitched a complete game 1-hitter with his only blemish being a solo shot by Steven Moya, winning 7-1 against the Tigers with a 9IP 1H 1ER 0BB 11K performance. Webster came over in July 2015 from the D'backs and is 5-7 4.42 81K in 16 starts this year.

In the same game, his right fielder Brandon Moss(32, 3*) went over the fence twice with a 2-3 2R 5RBI BB 2HR day. Moss is coming off a career high 38HR and 111RBI season with the Tribe last year and is batting .213-16-41 .709OPS in 72 games this year.

The same Indians made a rebuilding deal today, sending SP Sam Dyson(28, 3.5/4*, 8-5 3.01 76K) to the Diamondbacks. Dyson has been pretty good in general, but has a low stamina. In return, the Tribe collected #55 prospect SP Ricardo Sanchez(19, 3* HS, 4.5* OSA, A) and prospect LF Matt McPhearson(21, 2* HS, 2.5* OSA, A).

News:
Brewers SP Tyler Thornburg(27, 2.5*) collected a 2-0 win over the Mets today, shutting them down with a 8IP 2H 0ER 3BB 11K performance. Thornburg, a 3rd rounder in the 2010 draft, made his rotation debut last year with a 12-12 3.45 showing and is 6-7 3.43 90K in 18 games this year.

Indians SP Garrett Richards(28, 4.5*) continued a great season with a complete game 5-1 win over the Tigers, going 9IP 5H 1ER 0BB 12K. Unfortunately for him, he has been one of only few bright spots for a 39-48 Indians team, going 9-5 2.44 108K in 17 games... with a no-hitter.

After adding Sam Dyson, the D'backs pulled the trigger on a deal that will add SP Steven Matz(25, 2/2.5*, 6-5 2.47 87K) to their rotation. In exchange for him, the New York Mets receive prospect CF Colin Bray(23, 2* HS, 1.5* OSA , A).

Well, rumors were right, we were in deep trade talks with the Mets since July 1st, but Sandy Alderson, their GM, miraculously kept asking for another player on and on... and after five day of fruitless negotiation I called Orioles GM Stef Vleugel to find out how the deal we offered the Mets would match up for Gausman... and it turned out he liked our outfield prospects more than New York.

As for Arcia, he is more of a scouts dream, waiting to break out big with a 30+HR year. He had 24HR last year and we will see how he matches up with us... We decided to offer a couple of long term extensions for both anyways.

We reached deep into our pockets and got two big pieces instead of the one I envisioned, tho I had the Arcia deal in my pocket since June. Gausman and hopefully Sanchez as well as Johnson could be the anchors for our rotation in the next two years with Berrios and later Urias and Harvey/Burkhalter dropping in.

2016 Week 15

Week 15: 3vs Cincinnati Reds, 4@ Arizona Diamondbacks

July 11th

Cincinnati Reds - Milwaukee Brewers 5-7
MIL SP Kevin Gausman 6.1IP 8H 3R 3ER 0BB 8K
MIL RF Ryan Braun 2-4 R RBI HR
MIL PH/CF Logan Schafer 2-2 R
MIL SS Orlando Arcia 1-4 2RBI
MIL PH Mark Reynolds 1-1 R 2RBI HR
HR CIN: none
HR MIL: Ryan Braun(13), Mark Reynolds(18)
W: Will Smith(4-1 3.19) L: Nick Christiani(3-2 4.02) SV: Juan Nicasio(3 3.43)
Gausman threw alot of strikes but unfortunately found alot of lumber in the 7th and Angel Nesbitt provided no relief... in a 5-run Reds inning. After Smith got us out of the inning, Mark Reynolds sparked a 3-run bottom half to win it tho. Bad news, Tyrone Taylor legged out a double that inning... and left the game injured, diagnosis pending.

News:
Yankees SP Michael Pineda(27, 4*) collected eight scoreless in a 3-0 win over the Royals, allowing 3H 0BB 10K. Acquired from Seattle for C Jesus Montero and SP Hector Noesi, the 2011 All-Star is 9-3 2.83 112K in 19 starts this year.

Funny enough, Twins SP Hector Noesi(29, 1*) also pitched eight scoreless today, beating the Rays 2-0 in Tampa and allowing 6H 0BB 3K. Noesi was signed as minor league free agent this April and is 2-2 2.17 14K in just four starts in the majors so far.

July 12th

The diagnosis on CF Tyrone Taylor(22, 2/3*) is... that he bumped a bit rough into second base with his elbow and will be DtD for the next four days. So I can exhale again

Cincinnati Reds - Milwaukee Brewers 6-9
MIL SP Jimmy Nelson 5IP 7H 6R 6ER 5BB 2K
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 2-4 2R BB 2SB(24)
MIL RF Ryan Braun 2-3 2R 2BB SB(4)
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 2-5 R 3RBI HR
MIL LF Oswaldo Arcia 2-4 R 3RBI HR

HR MIL: Kennys Vargas(26), Oswaldo Arcia(15), Khris Davis(14)
W: Juan Nicasio(4-3 3.35) L: Aroldis Chapman(5-3 3.03)
Jimmy Nelson found his masters in Cincinnati as they collected his walks for two runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th to chase him trailing 6-5. We waited all the way till the 9th... to tie it on a Khris Davis pinch-hit solo shot... and to walk off on a 3-run Vargas blast.

News:
Astros SP Jon Niese(29, 2*) pitched a complete game 9-1 win in a interleague matchup against the Cardinals, going 9IP 4H 1ER 1BB 4K. Niese was drafted in the 7th round by the Mets in 2007, but left the team last May in a trade for a minor right field prospect. He is 8-8 4.88 66K in 19 starts for the 41-49 Astros.

Rays 1B John Jaso(32, 1.5*) had a career night in a 10-2 versus Minnesota, driving in SEVEN with a 4-4 2R BB DB HR night. The Rays actually were his first team, but he got traded away in 2011, but returned prior to the 2015 season. He is batting .211-5-48 .646OPS in 84 games.

Yankees C Gary Sanchez(23, 2.5/4*) helped his team to a 10-1 win over the Royals with a 2-2 3R 4RBI 3BB 2HR night. Sanchez made his debut last year, playing in 35 games, and is batting .240-10-27 .705OPS in 71 games this year, starting in 64 of them.

Marlins CF Marcell Ozuna(25, 2/3*) hammered two over the wall in Marlins Park in a 8-7 win over the Braves, going 2-4 2R 4RBI 2HR. Signed as a non drafted free agent years ago, Ozuna is their starting center fielder for three years now, batting .256-13-49 .738OPS in 88 games this year.

The Indians took another blow... as they had to announce that SP Corey Kluber(30, 4*) will have to undergo Tommy John surgery due to a partially torn UCL. The 2014 AL Cy Young winner was 7-9 3.17 108K in 18 starts prior to the injury.

July 13th

Cincinnati Reds - Milwaukee Brewers 9-4
MIL SP Josh Johnson 5IP 6H 3R 3ER 6BB 6K, 1-2 R

HR CIN: Ryan Rua(10)
HR MIL: Orlando Arcia(1), Luis Valbuena(2)
W: Jose Cisnero(8-5 3.74) L: Will Smith(4-2 4.60)
Smith allowed 5ER in 0.1IP. End of story.

News:
Rockies SP Jordan Lyles(25, 1.5*) pitched a 8 inning beauty in a 8-0 win over the Padres, allowing 5H 0BB 6K. While Lyles lost 14 games last year, he had a 4.14ERA, respectable in Colorado, and he is 8-4 3.70 85K in 19 starts this year.

The Astros announced that LF Preston Tucker(26, 3.5*) won't play again this season as he fractured his ankle in today's game. Tucker was pretty good in his rookie season, batting .248-18-59 .802OPS in 87 games.

July 14th

Milwaukee Brewers – Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2
MIL SP Tyler Thornburg 7.2IP 4H 1R 1ER 4BB 5K
MIL 2B Luis Sardinas 2-4 2R 2SB(27) HBP
MIL 3B Mark Reynolds 1-2 2R RBI 2BB
MIL 1B Martin Maldonado 1-3 2RBI BB DB
HR MIL: none
HR ARI: none
W: Tyler Thornburg(7-7 3.28) L: Archie Bradley(4-9 4.76) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(25 2.05)
A three run 1st did the trick today as Thorny gave us some length and we 'only' needed three relievers to get the game home.

News:
Yankees 3B Chase Headley(32, 3*) drove in four with two longballs in a 8-5 win over the Royals, going 3-4 2R 4RBI BB DB 2HR. Acquired from the Padres at the 2014 deadline, he is batting .262-9-30 .771OPS in 65 games. His teammate 1B Jeff Hobbs(21, 1/3*) also went 2-3 2R 3RBI 2HR in the win. Hobbs joined them from the independent league last year and is batting .375-5-9 in 13 games since getting the callup two weeks ago.

July 15th

The Brewers surprisingly announced a couple of contract extensions, locking up SP Kevin Gausman(25, 4.5*) for 8y/$88.26M in a backloaded contract with a team option, and LF Oswaldo Arcia(25, 5*) on a 7y/$68.29M deal with a team option aswell.

Milwaukee Brewers – Arizona Diamondbacks 4-5
MIL SP Aaron Sanchez 7IP 3H 3R 3ER 4BB 5K
MIL 1B Kennys Vargas 1-4 R 2RBI HR
MIL C Jonathan Lucroy 2-4 R
MIL CF Logan Schafer 4-4 R
HR MIL: Kennys Vargas(27)
HR ARI: Zach Borenstein(5), Dallas Tarleton(10)
W: Oliver Perez(4-2 3.79) L: Aaron Sanchez(7-9 2.75) SV: Joe Nathan(2 2.89)
Sanchez gave us a fair chance to win, but we never had a lead and Corey Knebel then blew up for two more in the 8th.

News:
Mariners SP Jake Peavy(35, 2*) pitched a complete game 3-hitter today in a 5-0 win over the Angels, walking two and whiffing 7. He busted as a deadline acquisition last year, going 4-6 5.35 in 13 starts, but is doing better this year with a 6-6 3.90 106K in 20 starts.

Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton(26, 5*) went yard twice in 6-3 win over the Nationals, going 3-5 2R 4RBI 2HR for the day. Stanton really erased his abysmal 2015 with his hot start, batting .300-19-60 .958OPS in 79 games.

The Yankees added another bat today as RF Chris Parmelee(28, 2*, .271-15-51 .805OPS) joins them from the Houston Astros. Going back in the deal is their 4th rounder in 2015, RF Bryant Harris(19, 3* HS, 2.5* OSA, R).

July 16th

HR MIL: Kennys Vargas(28)
HR ARI: none
W: Kevin Gausman(8-8 2.82) L: Sam Dyson(9-6 3.04) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(26 2.00)
Gausman was in control and got the W as Kennys Vargas continued his power surge with a 3-run homer in the 4th.

News:
Cubs SP Jacob Turner(25, 1.5*) was great today in a 6-0 win over the poor Cardinals, pitching 8.1 scoreless with 3H 0BB 8K. Turner was a 1st rounder by the Tigers and spent some time with the Marlins before joining Chicago in 2014. He is having his best year so far, going 7-5 3.32 76K in 18 starts.

Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista(35, 4.5*) continued to roll along in the 9-0 win over the Orioles, driving in SIX with a 4-52R 6RBI BB DB HR day. The 3x AL home run king is batting a .266-17-50 .922OPS clip this year in only 69 games.

The Athletics lost SP Jacob deGrom(28, 3.5/4*) for basically the rest of the season to shoulder inflammation. The 28-year old right hander left his start three days ago in pain, and his season will go into the books as 6-8 3.27 86K year in 19 starts.

Washington added a power bat as LF Evan Gattis(29, 3.5*, .226-25-58 .727OPS) will return to the NL East, leaving Baltimore in exchange for SP Blake Treinen(28, 1.5*, 4-9 4.45 54K).

July 17th

HR ARI: Paul Goldschmidt(16)
W: Jimmy Nelson(11-0 2.41) L: Patrick Corbin(6-7 3.83) SV: Jeremy Jeffress(27 1.96)
And going into the All-Star break... Jimmy Nelson is unbeaten.

News:
Mariners ace SP Felix Hernandez(30, 4.5*) added to his resumee with a 4-hitter of the Angels today, allowing no walks and 11K's in a 4-0 win. The 7x All-Star(including this season), is 9-5 2.79 132K in 21 starts this year.

Marlins C J.T. Realmuto(25, 3/4*) went 2-4 R 5RBI DB HR in a 11-3 win over the Nationals today. Drafted in the 3rd round in 2010, Realmuto developed into a good defensive catcher and team leader. He is batting .230-5-39 .658OPS in 83 games.

The Mets added a starter in SP David Buchanan(27, 2*, 4-11 7.08 59K 20GS) from the Phillies. Buchanan is having a horrific season, yet the Mets did sent prospect 2B Milton Ramos(20, 3.5* HS, 2.5* OSA, S A) and prospect SP Blake Taylor(20, 1* HS, 1.5* OSA, S A) over to get him.

News:
Red Sox SP Eduardo Rodriguez(23, 4/4.5*) went the distance in a 11-0 win over the Yankees at Fenway, allowing only four hits, no walks and whiffing 6. The lefty is in his rookie year, posting a 10-7 4.81 112K year in 21 starts... but hoping for a big second half.

Dodgers SP Zach Greinke(32, 4.5*) opened up the second half with a complete game 7-hitter, beating the Nationals and Max Scherzer 7-0 while allowing 7H 2BB 9K. The veteran right-hander has kept his ERA under three the last three years and is on pace to do so again with a 9-6 2.76 113K campaign in 20 games.

Johnson saw two unearned runs(Sardinas & Maldonado errors) cross the plate and walked too many to go deep into the game...but there is nothing like finishing a 4-game sweep with a walk off single bottom 10th courtesy of Oswaldo Arcia.

News:
Blue Jays SS Jose Reyes(33, 2*) became the latest player to reach the 2000-hit plateau today, going 2-3 in a 6-3 win over the Astros. Reyes spent his first nine years with the Mets, leading the NL in stolen bases three times and winning a batting title in 2011. After a one year stint with Miami, he joined the Blue Jays via trade.... where his skills eroded a bit. Reyes is a 5x All-Star and 2006 Silver Slugger Award winner, batting .288/.337/.428 2000H 120HR 664RBI 476SB for his career in 1662 games.
