Newcastle Expansion

October 1 2019

ABL Announces Expansion Teams

Today the ABL announced the next two expansion teams. They are expected to join in 2020. The teams are the Newcastle Eagles and Geelong Baycats. Newcastle, will feature the tradition colors of Newcastle, Blue and Red and will take on the name of the old Hunter Eagles from the 1st ABL iteration. Geelong, meanwhile, sharing an ownership group with the AFL Geelong Cats, will be called the BayCats and will use dark blue and a sea green as their primary marks.

The ABL did not rule out further expansion, this brings the ABL roster to 10. Flowers had repeatedly stated a goal to get to 12 teams before the media contract is up (2022). Some speculate second Sydney and Melbourne teams while others see the ABL returning to successful sides such as Western Australia, South Australia, or even Brisbane.

Baseball Spiritual Home: A Second Team?

Today an ownership groups from Fremantle, Port Adelaide, East Melbourne, South Melbourne, East Sydney, and Ipswich met as their bids were listened to by the commissioners office.

The reason these bids are just now being accepted by the ABL, although not officially released, was a rumored "One City One License" clause in the original league constitution. If this truly expires in 2020. The next round of expansion, which could even occur in 2020, may include the first inter-city rivalries. This could be key in developing the passion, especially seen in the AFL and A-League derby matches.

Fans in Western Australia and South Australia are pushing for their states second teams in their states, even if in the same metro areas. One fan said, "Regional rivalries had claimed to be the focus of previous expansion efforts. We've observed this near Brisbane, in New South Wales, and Melbourne will be receiver her second team. Its time for me to be able to travel to a road game that takes less four hours to get to."

The ABL will announce whether the further expansion will take place in 2020 with Newcastle and Geelong or whether that would occur in 2022 or 2024 even. The ABL will also discuss the possibility of promotion regulation or a challengers division within the same league.

The ABL commish Ryan Flowers is expected to respond and have an answer for league expansion.

Thirty days left in the season and here are the first playoff odds released, Gold Coast and the Gong struggling still. Hopefully we see one of them make a run and begin to build some fan support.

Melbourne seems to be all but locked in. The real question will now be can they lock up home field in the Claxton Shield, the winner of that has a huge advantage when the series comes to them. Additionally, it is really nice to see Adelaide and Brisbane in the hunt with three teams still really with a shot of chasing on of them down.

Over the week Perth made a charge and Melbourne faltered as Brisbane came in to tie for the 1 position. While still a five team race, Canberra is on the outside looking in. Teams from New South Wales now reside in the bottom two slots. Is baseball really sustainable there?

Last update before the final standings

In the last week Gold Coast is making a charge while Adelaide has slipped. Adelaide and Canberra are virtually out of the running unless they manage to essentially win out. Gold Coast with a decent chance to win. The real battle will be for the one seed and who doesn't have to play in the Preliminary Series. Perth is the newspaper's pick to win the season, and they still have a less than 50% chance at the playoffs. Also going to take this time to congratulate a Brisbane team that has way outperformed expectations.

2019 Final Standings

What a week. Adelaide went on a charge losing only 1 game to wrap up the final playoff spot. Adelaide will face Brisbane (Melbourne owns head to head tiebreaker) in the Preliminary Series.

On another note, a great year for Wall and Colenutt. Should be interesting to see which one of them takes home the MVP.

Colenutt had a steller year but his team did not make the playoffs, while Wall's year (slightly less steller), did win the one seed.

Fremantle, Port, Sydney, and Melbourne To Form ABL Competitor

Today representatives from four clubs met just outside of Perth. As the ABL playoffs continue, with Brisbane defeating the powerful Adelaide Bite, this is a shock to many inside the league. This unnamed upstart representatives have said that it will reach out ownership groups in Queensland to further the league's reach and form a director competitor. League representatives from the ABL were unavailable to comment. With Fremantle and Port's ownership groups also engaged in talks with the ABL this could be a thorn in the side for their bids or even accelerate the process if the ABL feels they have a potential competitor to their product.

Expansion Draft 2020

ABL Expansion Draft and Plans Announced

The ABL has officially announced plans to expand with second franchises in Western Australia and South Australia. These licenses were awarded to Fremantle and Western Adelaide. This is after these two franchises and organizations from Melbourne and Sydney had began the process of creating an upstart league. This move by the ABL all but nips that process in the butt. Additionally, many believe this move will secure political backing from Western Australia and South Australia. Fremantle will ground share with Perth for the beginning of the year and will have their ground built on the harbour near the markets. Port Adelaide will be the name of the West Adelaide license. Port's facility will be completed along Port Creek near the Wharf and should be ready for the 2020 ABL Season.

These two additions along with Geelong and Newcastle, will position the ABL well to air on free to view TV. Bids have began to be submitted by Chanels 7,9, and 10. The ABL, should, with these expansions foster regional rivalries while creating a national competition.

The expansion draft will take place on February 20th.
