The 2005-06 NHL Preview

With the NHL season about to get underway, the early Stanley Cup favourites appear to be the Detroit Red Wings, led by defenseman Nelson Koller. The 36 year old old Koller had 8 goals and 31 points in 72 games for Detroit last year. The Wings can expect a challenge from the Vegas Golden Knights and the Toronto Maple Leafs led by goalie Dan Anderson. Anderson is a rookie that was 39-6 with a 1.97 GAA and .904 Sv% in 53 games in the CHL last season.

Among the darkhorses, the Chicago Blackhawks could be a challenger with forward Issac Tokarski pushing them into contender status. The 23 year old Tokarski had 38 goals and 78 points in 72 games for the Blackhawks in 2004-05.

The scoring race will likely see Sabres Craig Tollison being challenged by Blackhawks Issac Tokarski and the Bruins Ronald Sutton. The 31 year old Tollison had 30 goals and 63 points in 71 games for the Sabres last year. The 35 year old Sutton had 28 goals and 81 points in 72 games with the Bruins in 2004-05.

The top defenseman in the league is generally considered Golden Knights blue liner Robert Petty, with Detroit's Nelson Koller and Dallas's Liam LaBelle also in the running. The 35 year old Petty had 10 goals and 34 points in 52 games with Vegas last season while the 28 year old LaBelle had 11 goals and 52 points in 72 games with the Stars.

Surprisingly without playing a game, a TSN reporter declared that the Leafs goalie Dan Anderson is among the best, while Sabres netminder Tony Lair and the Oilers Dusty Howell can also steal games for their teams. The 32 year old Lair had 12 wins with a 2.98 GAA and .898 Sv% in 38 games with the Sabres in 2004-05 while the 30 year old Howell had 29 wins with a 2.17 GAA and .910 Sv% in 62 games for the Flames last year.
