Hall of Fame?

My first reaction when Johnny Bradley suffered a career ending injury during the 2015 European Baseball League playoffs was to go into the editor mode and reinstate him. I managed to resist.

My question to anyone who is interested is do you think he is Hall of Fame worthy. The league began in 2007 and as yet there is no-one in the Hall, but in 5 seasons time there is every chance the Hall will be beginning to make sense.

Least number if AB is 465 for any of these seasons. 162 game schedule. For each season I have included his league rank when he was in the top 10 and also the league rank for his career up to the end of the 2015 season.

His postseason career covered 47 games, in which he has a .892 OPS, 8 HR, 34 RBI and 29 R.

He had 7 All Star selections, 1 MVP award (2011), 5 Hitter of the month awards, hit for the cycle once, has two 5 hit games and holds the EBL record for runs in a season.

I have the player creation modifiers at 1.000 across the board so the the following info is probably relevant -

Black Ink Test - 22
Gray Ink Test - 115
HOF Standards - 43
HOF Monitor - 123.5

I thought the Hall of Fame required a minimum of ten years of service. If it doesn't in your league, then this guy should probably qualify.

It is your HOF. I say go ahead put him in. He may not have reached the career standards for the HOF, but for the seasons he played he was a great player. A great player is a great player regardless of the number of years he got to play.... You player actually got to play about half of a career and put up some decent numbers.

It is up to you but I would not put him in. He was great for too short a time.

Baseball-Reference.com

Go to Baseball-Reference.com and look at real hall of famers who had "real short" careers. This should give some perspective.

How did the guy perform in the field?

How many awards? Championships?

That's part of why the "real" Hall of Fame has a waiting period, no?

Short Careers. Great Players.

Roy Campanella, C

Ralph Kiner, OF

Satchel Paige, P

All great players. Short MLB careers for various reasons.

If the vote came across my desktop, he would get a thumbs down from me, as he did not have enough seasons, IMHO.

Campanella and Paige's inclusion rests on more than their MLB output. Especially Paige's, whose MLB career was rather bad for a Hall of Famer (him being in his 40's probably didn't help).

Campanella 3 Time MVP

My point was that sometimes players with short careers are recognized.

Campanella...3 Time MVP. Great Hitting Catcher...not to mention the era he played and the unfortunate environmental circumstances he had to endure.

You have to love baseball talk.

How does he compare to other players who played the same position over that period of time? Is he significantly better? If yes, then put him in.

Campanella and Paige are not appropriate to count in the short career category as they both played in the Negro Leagues. Campy was 26 when he joined the Dodgers and Satchel was about 125 years old when he joined the Indians.

Kiner is one of the best comparisons to use. He is also considerred to be one of the most questionable HOF players ever.

Thanks for the input guys. Helpful as always.

If anything, this player has caused me to rethink the point at which I was going to open up the Hall of Fame in my world. I am starting to think that it makes a great deal of sense to wait until 20-25 seasons after creation, in order to have at least some perspective on exactly how well a player performed.

I suspect that he may just sneak in. He was a great player who was cut down in his prime (only 30 at time of injury - probably might have been worth mentioning this in my original post)

Two questions, one more important than the other before I'd give my vote:

1. What position did he play?
2. Did he bat leadoff?

I always like to make it a bit easier on my league's pioneers, especially if the league started say halfway into their prime or later. Even in your guy's case, though, if he was important to the league's burgeoning popularity, I think gets at least a good long look.

I also like the idea of asking yourself: if you were to make an all-star team of the players during a decade, would this guy make the team? That way you help ensure that you'll get enough players at primarily defensive positions and not too many at primarily offensive positions.
