The Official Boston Red Sox 2009 Season Thread
I'm shocked that nobody bothered to create this before me.
Anyway, we're doing good so far. Beckett was incredible tonight compared to Burnett. He really put the Yankees in their place. Ortiz also hit a home run!! Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. I bet he'll hit another one this series. |

1st -- Please keep it respectful in here as the Red Sox fans do the same in our thread (I know you didn't say anything nasty, but it did sound like you were looking to "pick a fight").
2nd -- There was nothing lucky about last night's drubbing. Face it, Burnett stunk and Beckett was threading a needle with his pitches. The Red Sox kicked the tar out of us last night, plain and simple. Now, as for putting the Yankees "in their place", we'll see about that There are still 13 games ahead of us head to head so there's plenty of baseball left to be played. I'll guarantee you that the Yanks don't go 0-19 against you guys this year

Also, we beat the Yankees again! 6-5! Sabathia vs. Penny is going to be a great match up. Hopefully they both bring their A game. |

I hate to say this, but I love watching the Yankees first base man play.
He is one beautiful ball player. I love Youkilis, but he is far from something beautiful.

I did not expect the Sox to come back and win tonight's game.
Perhaps the long top of the 8th inning had some effects on Sabathia. 9 straight wins against the Yankees? Wow...

Hats off to the BoSox so far; 0-8, gosh. Still a long way to go, though. Over 100 games, I think?

No one can say I'm a frontrunner. I'm joining the thread on a day when the boys stunk up the joint.
What do we do with our 73 starting pitchers? Is Smoltz ready? Is Penny getting traded? Is DiceK going on the DL with a phantom injury/ rehab assignment? (and yes, that is Luis "Loooooie" Tiant as my avatar. )

We are loaded with SP. I think the Sox will try to trade Penny, and I hope they will do it to get a IF who can play decent SS. As we all know very well, Daisuke has a non-trade, and I think it makes the situation almost no brainer to trade Penny. He has been good, and I think it is time to sell him now...

Papi is coming around. I think it's safe to say that Rice was right and he'll hit twenty-five for the season.

I think I am going to enjoy this moment as much as possible, since it is unrealistic for us to expect him getting back to 2003-2006 Papi form anymore.

It is really nice to see Ortiz finally swinging a good bat. I agree we aren't going to see him look like Papi from 3 seasons ago, but I'll be happy with a guy that can hit 15 to 20 homers and upwards of .270 the rest of the way.
It's also nice because it allows the Sox to sit on Penny and see what they have with Smoltz because there is no urgency to fill a need at this point. With Papi hitting, and Green more than serviceable at short, the team doesn't have a real big weakness. Did anybody really expect when we signed Penny & Smoltz, that we would be looking at a scenario where we had 7 guys (including Bucholz) vying for a starter spot. My only remaining concern is Dice-K; but I think he will come around. |

I think he should take his time, see what the real problem is, and come back when he is really ready, because we CAN afford losing him even for several months, with Smoltz and Bucholz waiting eagerly for their turns...

Beckett was dominant tonight. He's been in great form for the majority of his recent starts. This bodes well!

great call, I hadn't thought of that but it's dead on! I like that the team bounced back with a big come from behind victory after that fall apart game. I told the guy I work with that game was an anomoly (he's a Yankees fan and was all over me about it). When it looked like they might lose the next game, I thought I was going to hear about it all week! The Yankees and Rays are playing good ball right now, so I'm glad to see us get some home cookin for the next 10 games heading to the break. Hopefully we can win 7 or 8 of them and gain another game or two heading to the break. |

Now, should we be concerned?
