We one a 2-1 game, where Steve Cummings pitched 8 IP, give up 1 run on 8 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. It was his fifth start since moving into the rotation and in all 5 he give up 2 runs or less in at least 6.2 IP. Then we took 2 of 3 from the San Francisco Giants. Ricky Jordan made his debut and went 1 for4 with a double and Louie Meadows added 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and a SB. We won a 7-6 game in 12 innings where Darren Daulton had 5 hits, including 2 HRs and 4 RBIs. We were shut out in the finale. Then we ended May with 2 losses to the San Diego Padres, 4-2 and 5-4. In, the 1st game, Steve Cummings had his worst game, 4 ER in 8 IP, 3 of which were in the 8th inning. Dave Gallagher went 3 for 4 with both RBis. IN the 2nd, Mike Schmidt went yard, Milt Thompson added an RBI triple, but it wasn't enough as Tom Newell give up 4 ER in 6.2 IP. Gary Varsho made his MLB debut this week, going 3-24. After going 11-11 in April, we plummeted to 8-20 in May. THe offense ranks at or near the bottom in most categories while the Ptiching is all over the place. Hopefully, June and the draft bring better luck. |

BBN News Draft Recap - 6/7/1988
The 1988 June Amateur Draft concluded today in New York City. After much debate and mock drafts by the analysts, we finally know who the Chicago White Sox took with the first pick: Mike Piazza, a 19 year old C from a high school in Florida. 11/11/1988 - End of Year GM Report
It was another tough year for the Phillies as we finished 63-99, which was tied for last in the division and tied for the 5th worst in the majors. We scored 599 runs and allowed 796. A staggering differnce of -197. Our final Power Ranking was 23rd. This was a major disappointment as I expected to imporve towards 80 wins, but the season started off rough when we lost Von Hayes for season in the first week. We had some ups and downs and some of our younger players made some strides, whihc gives me hope for next year. Here is a position by position overview of the players who played for the Phils this season: Catchers
While, the counting stats were the same,Daulton cut his K% by 5% and improve his walk rate by 3 %. He will be the starter next year with Nelson, and [b}Prince[/b] fighting for the backup spot. I will look to add some FAs or some of the guys form my upper minors into the mix as well. |

Infielders
The infield was a mix of good and bad. After a slow start Walt Weiss caught fire in June and never looked back, finishing 3rd in ROY voting. Schmidt declined offensively but had a fantastic season defensively. Second base was a struggle until Tom Barrett took over. He played well, both offensively and defensively. I prefer him as a utility guy as he played well at 2B, 3B and LF. Plus with Weiss's lack of power, I'd like a better offensive 2B. All 3 of my first basemen were below average on offensive and defensive. I will probably keep Fielder as he has a ton of raw power and look to trade one of the other two. Amaral and Varsho will be fighting for bench spots. Legg most likely will be cut or in minors. |
