I'm a bit concerned. And I'm not sure about these latest trades. Julio Lugo for Chris Duncan, and two minor leaguers for Adam LaRoche. They might be OK deals, but I don't see that either will light a fire under the team.

I think these trades show how much the team (at least the FO) are concerned about the health of Lowell and Ortiz.
I agree with you though that these new players are not the impact players who will change the team instantly.

I hate to admit it, but not being able to get the Teixeira last winter is starting to have influences on the team now...

It is unbelievable how long this thread has been without any posts!
I guess it shows how miserable the second half of the season for the Sox has been.

Some upside for the team.

1) With the addition of Wagner, I think our bullpen is very, very deep.
Delcarmen, Ramirez, Saito for 6~7 innings, with Wagner as a lefty specialist, then Okajima and Paps for 8~9 innings.
Can't ask for more.

2) Wakefield will start tomorrow.
Hope he still has some left in him.

3) Dice-K is on a track for early September come back.
He will be a huge factor in September, and October if we were lucky to be in the playoffs.

4) Addition of Victor Martinez has been surely a good one, both offensively and diffensively.

5) Even though I still believe he should be pitching in AAA, Tazawa has shown some qualities that he will be a decent #3~4 SP in the near future.
I love his mentality, and I think he is a very clever pitcher.

I always seem to forgot about this thread! Wagner has been lights out thus far. I always liked Billy Wagner, and having a flame thrower from both the right and left side really adds new depth out in our pen. Definitely a major strength for us right now.

I'm not sure how bad Wakefield is hurt this time, but I was at Fenway for his first game back and he looked pretty good that night; hopefully him and Byrd can solidify our 4 & 5 spots down the stretch. At this point, I think Buchholz is our #3. I'm not counting on Dice-K for anything this season, anything he provides down the stretch or post-season will be a bonus (hopefully a good bonus!).

I was a little bummed out that we got Martinez instead of the rumored Adrian Gonzalez. I'm glad that I've been proven wrong thus far. Figuring that Youk, Ortiz, and Lowell stay healthy down the stretch. I'm thinking they have to sit Tek down in the playoffs. I think you need those big bats in the lineup.

I agree that Tazawa looked good, better than I expected. Probably another year in the minors before he figures into the rotation plans, but he looks like he could be pretty solid.

It is probably that this thread goes down to the bottom fairly quickly after a couple of posts from just you and me!

Let's keep this alive though...

What's this about Papelbon not liking Wagner on the team?

I do not think it is personal at all.

Almost every closer has to be told by everyone in the team everyday that he is THE one on the mound when the team is winning at the end of the games.
Probably you forgot their nature of mind, because you have someone like Mariano Rivera!

Paps has not been consistently dominating this season, (less velocity, more HR, more walks) and he knows it, team knows it.
I think we needed Wagner to make sure we at least have the alternatives to go to, when Paps is not as solid as he has been for the last couple of years come October.
Also, Wagner is perfect for the 8th inning set up role, if Okajima slows down a bit going forward. (And it seems to be happening right now. Okajima is little shaky for the last week or so)

Now we have to worry about Beckett I guess.

My thoughts coming down the stretch have been, they probably won't catch the Yankees, but as long as they hold it together and get into the wild card a Beckett/Lester one-two combo would be pretty tough to play against.

I figure he has to pitch game one of the series, who ever it's against, and if he gets roughed up bad in game one, that is pretty bad news. Hopefully they can figure out what's up with him, and soon.

Is it just me, or has this been a really long, tough season.

I guess we are the only Sox fans on these forums! I'll have to make a mental note to check in here more often.

I am really concerned about Beckett, too.
I still think our offense and Bulllpen will bring the team to playoffs, but there is no way, just no way we will be able to get through ALCS with this SP rotation. (I mean, get through Yankees...)

I know there are some great Red Sox fans on these forums, but somehow they just do not come here often...

Well, we took the last game of the series against the Rays!

Beckett looked better yesterday, but dropping three out of a four to a mediocre White Sox team is really concerning; especially coming down the stretch in must win games. With Texas playing .500 baseball lately, and Tampa falling apart, we should really be pulling away.

I'm losing confidence that this team is able to do any damage, even if it holds on to a post-season berth. Hopefully, I'll be convinced otherwise!

I do not think this is our year.
Just as a gentleman above me points out, we may really suck.

I still think we will be able to enjoy some Red Sox baseball games in come post-season though.

I'm writing this as a moderator and as a Yankees fan.

The rivalry between Sox and Yankees is a lot of fun this time of year, especially when both teams are still in it. All that I ask is that both sides keep it at a respectful level. This kind of post isn't called for. Please keep it a level higher than this.

Thanks

As a fellow Yankees fan, I agree with this. I've been enjoying the toned down rhetoric on this board over the past year or so, and I would not like to see it return to the childish nonsense of dropping s-bombs on each other's threads.

I came here, though, to urge you guys (meaning the BoSox, through their fans) to keep playing hard. I make it out to be only 2 games that you are up in the Wild Card race.

Bru,

I know.

I think we played hard, good baseball in the first half of the season, and somehow slowed down a bit lately.
It is pretty much because of the fact that the core of this team is getting, but looking at the way the Yankees are playing right now, I do not think we can make being old an excuse for it.

I still believe we are good enough to play in October, but I just can't picture this team beating you guys in the play-off games this year...

The Angels actually beat us once in the playoffs last year.

Red Sox vs. NYY: 9-6.

Don't be too happy if they do
