I went and had a bath at 5 down in the top of the 7th.

Come back and there's my email summary saying that Wakefield was the winning pitcher... Reminds of the Mothers Day game last year, although that wasn't over two innings.

Yes, another big come from behind win!
The Red Sox SPs are not really winning the games, but the hitters have been killing the opponent bullpen late in the games to make the "Big Wins" happen lately.

Looks like the sox are having their way with TEX again even minus Manny and Varitek. Joe Thurston? Whatever happened to Kielty?

He was sent to Pawtucket at the end of March I believe, and has been on DL lately.

Kielty hurt his hand. Thurston is a backup IF/OF, anyway. Kielty wouldn't be up for Cora, which is who Thurston is replacing. Kielty would be up for Crisp if they decide that he must be DL'ed. Uhh, if Kielty wasn't hurt, that is.

All of these have not really been the problem for the Sox right now, at least if we look at the standings and results...

Life is good for me

So..., a great debut for Justin Masterson. (Ruined by the bullpen obviously )

He has a great sinker, with good slider, and that kind of "side throw-like " deceptive pitching form.
He should make a good #2,3 SP in a couple of years.

Below I thin is the likely rotation we will see in year 2009 season.

1 Beckett
2 Dice-K
3 Lester
4 Buchholz
5 Masterson

Not bad at all.

Keilty out for at least a month with hand surgery.

I REALLY like Masterson. (This is balanced by my not really finding much interesting about Bowden, Pauley, or any other starting pitcher for the Sox in the minors in 2008. Bard is now a reliever, while Caleb Clay, Austin Bailey, and now Nick Hadegone are out for the year with injuries.) Sinkerball/strikeout pitchers are a good combo, and it is rare that a sinker baller can keep that up on the ML level. (E.g., Pauley was considered a sinkerballer, until the stats showed that he was in AAA or the majors.)

I really don't think Lester is going to be the #3 pitcher in that fantasy rotation. And I think they sign a free agent SP - or trade for one - this off season. Next year could offer Anderson, Lin, Reddick, Kalish, and Lowrie all in AA or (in Lowrie's case) the majors. (Lin and Kalish may only be in high A. Tejada has a lot to show before he can thought of as a real prospect.) So, they are in the odd position - really, reversed from a year ago - of having some positional depth in the minors, but lacking real starting pitching depth. (Mainly, to be fair, because of injury.)

OK, 5 straight losses after 6 straight wins.
I know we have some ups and downs in a long season, but I guess the flu just killed the momentum we had like a week ago.

Sounds like our season as well so far. Meanwhile, fish and birds are swimming and flying above both of us in our division.

Well, let's not go too far -- the Sox are still in first, unlike the Yanks

Should I have said "zero games back" rather than 1.5?

I do not know about the Birds, but these fishes are tougher to beat than I thought...

The flu really did do a number on the clubhouse.

Question... Alex Cora hasn't been activated yet from the DL (he was placed on the 15-day retroactive to April 10) is he still hurt? Does that mean Lowrie goes back down if Cora is healthy?

I believe that to be the plan.
