1978 Final - Cont'd

He outperformed his IRL AVG and OBP slightly, and was very close on SLG %. Kong significantly outperformed his IRL total numbers based on playing every day by +19 HR and +55 RBI:

04/19/1979 - Multi-HR Day for Kingman as Cubs Overpower Cardinals, 20-8

The Chicago Cubs downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 20-8, at Wrigley Field. Dave Kingman led the way, going 2-for-2 for Chicago. The Cardinals fall to 5-7 and continue their wobbly start to the 1979 season.

Early in the game, Kingman had a 2-run home run for Chicago off RHP Mark Littell. He later homered again off RHP Mark Littell to put the Cubs on top, 5-3.

"Enjoyed this one," Kingman told the Chicago Citizen. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

04/22/1979 - Expos Win at Chicago, 7-2

Rodney Scott left his imprint on the 7-2 Montreal win against the Chicago Cubs. Scott, who is tied for 4th in the NL in stolen bases with 5, was 4-6 with 4 singles. He drove in 4 runs. The Cubs fall to 7-7 and continue their uneasy start to the 1979 season.

With Montreal leading 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Scott hit a fastball from Lynn McGlothen for a run-scoring single. It was his 9th hit of the season and put the Expos ahead, 2-0.

"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Montreal manager .

Kingman homered late off LHP Ross Grimsley Jr.

04/24/1979 - Cubs Subdue Houston, 5-4

The Chicago Cubs defeated the Houston Astros, 5-4, in NL action at Wrigley Field. Bill Buckner received player of the game honors. The 11-year veteran was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs. Mike Krukow was the winning pitcher. Over 7.2 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. The Astros fall to 6-11 and continue their unimpressive start to the 1979 season.

Barry Foote's at-bat in the bottom of the sixth inning was a big one for Chicago. Coming to bat with one out, a runner on 3rd and Chicago leading 4-2, the catcher reached on an error by the SS, driving in 1 run.

Kingman homered off RHP J R Richard.

04/25/1979 - Astros Take Shellacking, Lose 15-2 to Cubs, Kingman

Chicago first baseman Dave Kingman was a significant contributor in his team's 15-2 triumph over the Houston Astros. He went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs off RHP Ken Forsch and a walk, while scoring 3 times and driving in 5 for Chicago. Dennis Lamp got credit for the win, improving to 2-1. He allowed 1 run on 7 hits in 8 innings. The Astros, now 6-12, continue their slow start.

Kingman contributed a big hit, a 3-run home run, for Chicago in the bottom of the first. With his team trailing 1-0, Kingman took a changeup from Ken Forsch and stroked the home run to right-center. His 5th home run of the season allowed the Cubs to leap in front, 3-1.

04/27/1979 - Braves Win Big over Cubs

The Atlanta Braves overcame a good performance by Chicago first baseman Dave Kingman to knock off Chicago, 15-6, at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Kingman belted 2 home runs, both off RHP Tommy Boggs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Tommy Boggs, who went 6.1 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 6 runs on 8 hits, while walking 4 and striking out 2. His record now stands at 2-3. The Cubs drop to 9-9 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1979 season.

Jeff Burroughs, who is tied for 10th in the NL in home runs with 4, aided the Atlanta cause with a 2-run single in the bottom of the second. For the game, the right fielder was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.

05/05/1979 - Cubs Shellac Braves, 16-0

A 3-RBI performance from first baseman Dave Kingman, who is a two-time All-Star, led the Chicago Cubs to a 16-0 win over the Atlanta Braves. The Braves fall to 9-17 and continue their unimpressive start to the 1979 season.

Early in the game, Kingman had a 2-run home run for Chicago off RHP Phil Niekro. It was his 9th home run of the season and put the Cubs on top, 2-0. He later hit his second longball of the game off RHP Rick Mahler.

"Getting a lot of baserunners and getting some timely hits, it's a good combination," said Kingman.

05/06/1979 - Cubs Solve Braves, 6-3

The Chicago Cubs grabbed a 6-3 win over the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field. Chicago first baseman Dave Kingman was 2 for 5 with a home run off LHP Larry McWilliams, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once to earn player of the game honors. The Braves fall to 9-18 and continue their lackluster start to the 1979 season.

Scot Thompson, who is rated as the 65th best prospect by BNN, aided the Chicago cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first. For the game, the right fielder was 4 for 4 with 4 singles.

"Winning the game is always the first objective," Kingman said.

05/13/1979 - Cubs Win at Houston, 4-3

The Chicago Cubs beat the Houston Astros, 4-3, at Astrodome. The win was largely due to the efforts of first baseman Dave Kingman, who captured player of the game honors. He was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. Bruce Sutter picked up the save for Chicago, his 6th of the year. The Astros drop to 12-25 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1979 season.

Kingman had a game-changing single in the top of the sixth. On a 1-0 fastball from Bert Roberge, he banged a run-scoring single to right, giving the Cubs a 2-1 lead. It was the 32nd hit of the year for Kingman. He had earlier homered off RHP J R Richard.

"I like the grit of this ballclub," Kingman said.

05/16/1979 - Phillies Get Close Win Over Cubs

The Philadelphia Phillies powered past the Chicago Cubs, 9-7, at Wrigley Field. Pete Rose Sr went 3 for 5 with 3 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2, to lead the charge. Nino Espinosa, who went 7 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 4 runs on 10 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 2. His record now stands at 5-3. Philadelphia is now riding a 3-game win streak.

Pete Mackanin hit a 2-run double off Donnie Moore in the top of the eighth, which put the Phillies in front, 6-4. In addition to the double, Mackanin had 1 single and 1 walk, while going 2 for 4.

Rose Sr called the triumph "a good team win."

Kingman homered off RHP Nino Espinosa.

05/17/1979 - Phillies Get Road Win, 5-1

The Philadelphia Phillies picked up a win at Wrigley Field, knocking off the Chicago Cubs, 5-1. On the mound for Philadelphia was right-hander Jack Kucek, who played a pivotal role in the win. Kucek, now 3-2, was the winner. In 6 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 4, walking 1, and allowing no earned runs. Philadelphia has now won 4 in a row.

Manny Trillo drove in one run for Philadelphia. The 28-year old second baseman had a key at-bat in the top of the sixth. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Mike Krukow. It was his 14th RBI of the season.

Kucek expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end.

Kigman homered off RHP Warren Brusstar to avoid the shutout.

05/18/1979 - Victory Pushes Cubs Record to 19-17

Chicago starter Dennis Lamp pitched effectively against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field. The right-hander led his team to a 3-1 win. The Cubs bumped their record to 19-17 with this latest triumph.

The Cubs got a big at-bat from left fielder Bill Buckner. For the game, Buckner went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk, while adding 2 RBI. In the bottom of the third, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 10th double of the season gave Chicago a 2-1 lead.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," Buckner said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."

Kingman homered off RHP Joe H Coleman.

05/22/1979 - Cubs Lose, 4-2, at Shea Stadium

It was a fun time at Shea Stadium, where the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets tangled.

The New York Mets stymied the Chicago Cubs, 4-2, at Shea Stadium. Joel Youngblood, who had a good day at the plate, was named player of the game. He went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for New York. Dale Murray nailed down his 5th save.

Barry Foote had a chance to do some damage in the top of the ninth. With Chicago trailing 4-1, Chicago had runners on 1st and 3rd. Foote hit into a double play. But it was not enough. Chicago would not finish the comeback.

New York currently is in last place in the NL East Division at 17-22.

Kingman took RHP Mike Scott deep.

05/25/1979 - Phillies Beat Cubs in Extras, Despite Big Game by Kingman

Dave Kingman had a good game, but he could not keep the Chicago Cubs from falling, 5-4, to the Philadelphia Phillies at Veterans Stadium. The Chicago first baseman went 4-4 with 2 home runs off RHP Dick Ruthven, and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 in the loss. Chicago's current losing streak has reached 5 games.

The Phillies got a big at-bat from second baseman Manny Trillo. For the game, Trillo was 2-5 with 2 singles. In the bottom of the tenth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 35th hit of the season gave Philadelphia a 5-4 lead.

05/27/1979 - Cubs Roll to 11-3 Win Over Phillies

The Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-3, at Veterans Stadium. The Cubs got a fine performance from first baseman Dave Kingman, who captured player of the game honors. He went 3 for 5 with a home run off RHP Warren Brusstar and a double. He scored 3 times and drove in 2. The Cubs' win now puts them at 21-23.

Chicago used the clutch hitting of Ivan de Jesus to capture the win. The shortstop drilled a 2-run double in the top of the second inning to give the Cubs the lead, 4-0. For the game, de Jesus had 1 single and 2 doubles in 5 at-bats.

de Jesus told a Chicago Citizen reporter that he was "more than satisfied" with the win.

05/30/1979 - Pirates Stay Hot, Beat Cubs; Kingman Hits 20th Before End of May

The Chicago Cubs got a superb performance from third baseman Steve R Ontiveros, but the Pittsburgh Pirates still won the game, 6-3. Ontiveros was named the player of the game despite the loss. He was 2 for 2 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks. He scored 2 times. The save was Kent Tekulve's, his 9th. The winning streak has now reached 5 games for Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, left fielder John Milner hit a 2-run home run that set the crowd abuzz.

"We took advantage of our opportunities," Milner told the Pittsburgh Herald. "It's as simple as that."

Kingman homered off RHP Don Robinson to continue his hot start to the season.

05/31/1979 - Cubs Need Extra Frames to Get Past Pirates; Kong Clobbers 2 More

Dave Kingman added some punch to the Chicago offense, helping them outmuscle the Pittsburgh Pirates, 16-7. In the game, Kingman, who leads the NL in runs scored with 43, belted 2 home runs (both off LHP John Candelaria), while scoring 4 times and driving in 6. Bill Caudill picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Kent Tekulve was tagged with the loss. The Cubs' win now puts them at 23-25.

Steve Macko hit a 2-run double off Kent Tekulve in the top of the 14th, which put the Cubs in front, 9-7. In addition to the double, Macko had 1 single, while going 2 for 4.

Cubs manager wasn't all too pleased, despite the win, telling reporters that the performance highlighted some clear areas for improvement moving forward. He refused to be more specific, however. "I'm not gonna publicize our weaknesses," he said. "That stuff stays in the clubhouse."

06/02/1979 - Giants Win in Extras; Another Huge Day for Kingman

With first baseman Mike Ivie leading the charge, the San Francisco Giants defeated the Chicago Cubs, 12-8, at Wrigley Field. Ivie, who is tied for 6th in the NL in extra base hits with 23, was 4 for 6 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Reliever Phil Nastu picked up the win. His record improves to 1-0. Donnie Moore took the loss. The Giants bumped their record to 27-27 with this latest triumph.

San Francisco right fielder Hector Cruz delivered a grand slam home run in the top of the 12th. Overall, he went 3 for 6, including 1 home run, 1 single, and 1 double. He scored 2 runs and batted in 5.

"We got the victory," said Ivie. "That's all that matters at the end of the day."

Kingman homered twice off LHP Dave A Roberts.
