1919 Cincinnati Reds
Decided to replay the 1919 season of the Cincinnati Reds. I installed myself as GM. Didn't make any trades because I felt that the team was set and ready to roll. The Reds had hired a good manager, Pat Moran, away from the Phillies. He'd won a pennant for them back in 1915. One thing Moran did that year was use a 5 man rotation that became a 6 man rotation at times. Dolph Luque alternated between starting and the bullpen. When a starter's arm got a little weary, Dolph would emerge from the pen and take his place for a turn in the rotation. This was 60 years before the 5-man rotation became fashionable.
By doing nothing and making no changes, the Reds are off to a 19-8 start. They just took three out of four at the Polo Grounds from the second place Giants and haven't lost a series yet. Hod Eller even beat Grover Alexander and those cute little Cubbies 2-1 at Wrigley Field. So why in the hell do I keep getting messages from my owner nagging me that the team needs upgrading in RF? My RF, Earle "Greasy" Neale is hitting over .300 and in real life he would go onto lead the Reds in hitting in that infamous World Series with the Black Sox. He's also in the NFL Hall of Fame as a coach for the Eagles. He led them to two NFL championships and is often credited as the inventor of the 4-3 defense. Sometimes I think these owners don't know their asses from third base. |

In case anyone is wondering how things played out the Reds finished 83-57 which was 13 games worse than the real Reds finished in 1919 but still good enough to win the pennant by three games over the Cardinals who finished 7th in real life. The Reds didn't face the White Sox in the World Series so no Black Sox scandal. The Sox finished second behind the Noo Yawk Yankees (with no Babe Ruth). It was a best of nine series that year and if it had been best of seven I would have brought a world championship to Cincinnati just like in real life only it wouldn't be tainted by scandal this time. But alas, Noo Yawk rallied from a 1-4 deficit to take the series in 9 games. When I went up in the series 4-1 I just knew the AI was going to screw me over and give the series to Noo Yawk. Some things don't change. The Yankees will always get favoritism from both humans and computers.
