DR. STRANGELOVE SIGNS WITH METS
Signee makes immediate impact

The New York Mets made a high profile signing, acquiring former Pittsburgh Pirate and MLB all-star Dick Stuart. Stuart represented the Pirates at the all-star game in 1960, 1961, and 1962. He also won the NL Silver Slugger Award at first base in 1960.

The Pirates chose to not bring Stuart back, citing that he was asking for too much money. Stuart hit .261 with 30 homers and 67 RBI's for the Pirates last season.

Stuart will join the New York Mets. He will reportedly be paid $132,000, which is the third highest salary in the entire Continental League.

The Mets hope the large contract will pay off, and it certainly paid off in the Mets 11-0 drubbing of the New Orleans Alligators last night. Stuart went 2-for-5 in his Mets debut, hitting two home runs and driving in four runs.

After last night's win the Mets are 18-13 and are in second place in the Continental League's Eastern Division.

Pilots Sputtering

The once-hot Atlanta Pilots have lost eight straight games and have watched themselves lose their once firm grip on the Eastern Division lead.

Atlanta was swept by the Denver Doves, then swept by the Toronto Maple Leafs, before losing their first two against the New Orleans Alligators.

After losing to the Alligators 3-2 last night and the Mets winning over the Doves, the Pilots have dropped out of first place. The Pilots have either been in sole possession of or tied for first place since April 11th.

The Pilots look to get back on track tonight on the road against New Orleans. Chet Nichols Jr. will pitch for Atlanta.

Hey y'all, I know its been a while since I updated this. I'm on the home stretch with classes, but I wrap up tomorrow and fly home Tuesday, so I'll have a lot more time on my hands shortly. With the summer months ahead, I will have plenty of time to keep playing and telling this story

CLOSE CALL

The Continental League of Professional Baseball Clubs' trade deadline passed yesterday with no action, as both the races in the Western and Eastern Division are extremely tight.

The Mets sit atop the Eastern Division, going 46-33. A leaky bullpen has kept the team from running away with the division. The 4.64 bullpen ERA is last in the Continental League. The Atlanta Pilots and Toronto Maple Leafs are tied for second at 45-35. The Buffalo Lakers have trailed off after a better start to the year. They're 39-41. The Memphis Hound Dogs are in last place at 34-43.

The Denver Doves (42-37) lead the Continental League's Western Division. The normally lowly franchise has been one of the biggest competitors in the Western Division all year long. They are followed by the defending champion Dallas Texans (41-39). The Texans limped out of the gate in April, but a 15-13 month of May and a 16-12 month of June have put the aging ball club back in the thick of things down the stretch. The Houston Colt .45s are 40-39, good for third place in the division.

Those three teams have put a little bit of distance between them and the rest of the division. The New Orleans Alligators (36-44) and Minneapolis Millers (28-50) have quite a bit of work to do if they want back in the race.

MONDAY, JULY 27, 1964 HOUSTON, TEXAS -- The Nation's Sixth City

Colt .45s to Change Stadiums, Names in '65

The Houston Colt .45s will be moving to a new stadium next year. Construction has begun on the stadium, which will be located on 8400 Kirby Drive on the West side of town, near the current home of the Colt .45s.

Players on both the Colt .45s and opposing ballclubs have complained about the sweltering Houston heat. Temperatures are routinely near or at 100 degrees at first pitch. The stadium will be an indoor, domed stadium. It will be the first ever domed sporting venue in the world.

Former Houston mayor Roy Hofheinz has been instrumental in the building process. He says he has no doubts the stadium will be open in time for next season.

Colt .45s owner Craig F. Cullinan Jr., also said that the team will change names beginning next season. While he declined to reveal what the new name will be, he said it will honor the city and that fans will be pleased with the team's new look.

The .45s 50-53, but are only one GB in the mediocre Western Division. They play the Atlanta Pilots on the road tonight. Ralph Mauriello (7-7, 3.00 ERA) is slated to pitch for Houston. Don Larsen (4-7, 4.61 ERA) is slated to pitch for Atlanta. First pitch is at 6:05

Smith Hits For Cycle

Denver Doves outfielder Al Smith hit for the cycle Saturday night in the Doves 10-6 road win at Elvis Presley field over the Memphis Hound Dogs.

Smith tripled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, homered in the 6th, and singled in the 9th. He finished 4-for-5 with 3 RBI's and 3 runs scored.

"I got good pitches to hit and was able to take advantage of their mistakes," Smith said.

The 36-year-old Smith signed with the Doves this past offseason, making the transition from MLB to the Continental League. He's been a big part of the Doves success, as they currently lead the Western Division. Smith is hitting .345 with 13 HR and 52 RBI's.

The Doves continue their series against the Hound Dogs tonight.

Texans Take Division Lead

1964 has been a struggle for the defending champion Texans, but with just over 20 games remaining, they've taken the Western Division lead. The Texans defeated the Eastern Division-leading Mets 8-4 last night to improve to 60-60 and propel themselves over the Denver Doves.

Choo Choo Coleman and Edwin Chasteen powered the offense. Chasteen went 3-for-5, driving in three runs. Coleman went 3-for-5 as well, driving in three runs.

Earl Wilson earned the win for Dallas, going 7.0 IP and allowing two runs. He also struck out six and walked four. The win improved his record to 12-8.

The 1964 season has been a mostly frustrating one for the Texans, but a weak division and a 9-3 start to August have kept them in the race. Their closest competitor, the Denver Doves, have lost four consecutive games. They begin a three game set against the Atlanta Pilots tonight. The Texans begin a three game set at home against the Buffalo Lakers.

Standings

Western Division
1) Dallas Texans (60-60)
2) Denver Doves (59-61, 1)
3) Houston Colt .45s (57-63, 3)
4) New Orleans Alligators (56-64, 4)
5) Minneapolis Millers (51-69, 9)

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1964 HOUSTON, TEXAS -- The Nation's Sixth City

PIERSALL'S STREAK ENDS

Houston Colt .45s Center Fielder Jim Piersall's 29-game hitting streak ended last night. The hitting streak was the longest in Continental League history.

Piersall wasn't just sour about the loss of his hitting streak, as the .45s lost to the Mets 7-0.

"I didn't do anything to help my team win today," Piersall said. "We're in a tight pennant race. I don't care if I had hits in my past 29 games. Today I didn't do what I needed to do to get the job done."

The Colt .45s (67-70) are three games back of the division leading Dallas Texans. With only seven games left to play, their chances of winning the division are slim.

Piersall signed with Houston in April after being cut by the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball. He represented the Boston Red Sox in the All-Star Game in 1954 and 1956.

METS TO MEET TEXANS IN FINAL

The New York Mets have clinched their second Western Division title in franchise history and will square off against the Dallas Texans in the Continental Series.

The Mets finished 84-60 and went over .500 in each month of play. They lead the CL in runs scored and were second in runs against. Dick Stuart paced the lineup, hitting .335 with 40 HR and 104 RBI's. That clip was good for third in the league in average, second in homers, and third in RBI's.

Dennis Ribant led the Mets pitching staff. He led the league in wins, piling up 21 of them. He had a 2.49 ERA in 30 starts and 249.0 IP. He is a candidate to win Pitcher of the Year, which would be his second in a row.

The Dallas Texans will represent the Western Division. They have won the Western Division all four years of the league's existence and are the league's defending champion.

The Texans won a weak Western Division and didn't look to be a competitor for a majority of the year, however a 19-10 month of August propelled them to the top of the division.

The Texans are 8th in the Continental League in runs scored and 5th in the league in runs against.

Roy White led the lineup, hitting .304 with seven HR and 58 RBI while swiping 21 bags. Earl Wilson led the rotation, winning 15 games in 29 starts. He had a 2.48 ERA in 221.2 IP.

The Continental Series begins play in New York at Payson Stadium on Thursday. The first pitch is at 1:35 ET. Dennis Ribant is expected to get the ball for New York, while Dave Debusschere is expected to get the ball for Dallas.

Mets Demolish Texans, Take 1-0 Lead

The New York Mets took care of business in game one of the Continental Series, beating the Dallas Texans 14-9 at Payson Stadium.

The Mets took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Texans starter Dave Debusschere gave up a double to Mets third baseman Gil McDougald, scoring Dick Stuart. The Mets then tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second. A single from Jesse Fischer scored Harry Panaro and Dennis Ribant. A single by Stuart later in the inning drove in Fischer, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead.

The Texans made it a ballgame again in the top of the fourth, when Roy White smashed a 401 foot three-run home run over the fence in right-center.

However, the Mets answered back immediately, scoring six runs in the bottom half of the frame, all but sinking the Texans. A two-run home run to dead center by William Reynolds capped the rally and gave the Mets a comfortable 10-3 lead.

Neither team would score again until the bottom of the seventh, when Stan Palys hit a grand slam inside-the-park home run to give the Mets a 14-3 lead.

The Texans did score six runs in the top of the ninth, including another homer by White, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Mets captured the 14-9 win.

Dave Debusschere took the loss for Dallas. He lasted 3 2/3, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits and three walks. Dennis Ribant picked up the win for New York. He lasted 8 1/3, giving up seven runs on eight hits while striking out seven.

The Continental Series continues today at Payson Stadium. Earl Wilson will pitch for Dallas. Hal Kolstad will pitch for New York. First pitch is at 1:35.

TEXANS EVEN SERIES

Earl Wilson turned in a masterful effort as the Texans defeated the New York Mets 2-0 at Payson Stadium to even the Continental Series at 1-1.

Wilson pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only two hits. He did walk seven batters, but struck out five as well.

"I didn't have great command today, but I was able to gut out innings. I'm just happy I was able to help my team win," Wilson said.

Jim Lefebvre and Dick Stuart were responsible for both hits for the Mets.

Hal Kolstad also pitched a spectacular game for the Mets in a losing effort. He went the complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out eight and walked two.

The Texans took the lead in the top of the third inning when a sacrifice fly by Roy White scored the pitcher Wilson. The Texans scored their second and final run of the game the very next inning on a solo homer by catcher Chuck Staniland.

The teams have an off day tomorrow to account for travel from New York to Dallas. Rolf Scheel will pitch game three for the Mets. Carl Mathias will throw for Dallas.

METS TAKE BACK CONTROL

The New York Mets took back control of the Continental Series, defeating the Dallas Texans 3-1 at Turnpike Stadium.

New York Mets manager Bill Perry made a game day decision to start Paul Toth instead of Rolf Scheel, who was originally scheduled to pitch. Toth responded by pitching six innings, allowing only one run, picking up the win for New York. John Purdin pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn a hold. Bob Garibaldi pitched 2/3 scoreless innings, picking up the save.

Carl Mathias pitched admirably in a losing effort for Dallas. He lasted eight innings, allowing three runs (two earned).

The game stayed scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. Jim Lefebvre singled up the middle to score William Reynolds. Later in the inning, Dick Stuart singled to left field, scoring Toth.

The Texans trimmed the lead to one in the bottom of the seventh when Choo Choo Coleman drove in Donald Gordon. However, the Mets got that run back in the top of the eighth on a solo homer by Dick Barone.

The Continental Series continues today at Turnpike Stadium. Rene Valdes will pitch for the Texans. Rolf Scheel will pitch for New York. First pitch, 2:35

METS WIN SHOOTOUT

The New York Mets are one win away from capturing their second Continental League title, defeating the Dallas Texans 10-5 at Turnpike Stadium and taking a 3-1 Continental Series lead.

The Mets got out to a big lead early, scoring six run in the first two innings. Dick Stuart smashed a solo homer in the top of the first. A solo homer by William Reynolds, a three-run shot by Jim Lefebvre, and another solo shot by Stuart gave the Mets a five run second inning and a comfortable 6-0 lead.

The Texans scored their first run in the bottom of the third when John Baird drove in Edwin Chasteen on a single. Dallas scored again in the fourth when a double by Choo Choo Coleman drove in Chuck Staniland, making the score 6-2.

Neither team scored again until the top of the eighth, when the Mets scored three runs. A single by Lefebvre and an ensuing throwing error by the left fielder Coleman allowed a run. Stuart followed that up with a two-run shot, his third home run of the day.

Dallas would score four runs in the bottom half of the frame, but it wasn't enough as the Mets scored again in the ninth to pick up the 10-5 win.

Rolf Scheel picked up the win for New York, pitching seven innings and allowing four runs (three earned). Rene Valdes picked up the loss for Dallas, lasting five innings while allowing six runs.

The teams play again today as the Mets look to wrap up the Continental Series. The pitching matchup will be a rematch of game one, with Dennis Ribant going for the Mets and Dave Debusschere going for the Texans. Ribant got the best of Debusschere in game one, as Debusschere couldn't even get out of the fourth inning and allowed nine runs.

CHAMPIONS

The New York Mets won their second Continental League title in three years, defeating the Dallas Texans 7-6 in a dramatic, extra-inning game five.

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Manuel Lopez drove in William Reynolds on a line drive single to left field, but the Texans tied the game in the bottom of the third when John Baird homered to left field.

The game didn't stay tied for long though, as Lopez drove in Reynolds for the second time of the day, this time on an RBI groundout, in the top of the fourth inning. Lopez picked up another RBI in the sixth, driving in Elio Chacon and giving the Mets a 3-1 lead.

The Mets scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-1 lead. Pinch hitter Frederick Hopke drove in Jim Lefebvre, and Harry Panaro drove in Dick Stuart. A homer by Steve Demeter in the top of the ninth gave the Mets a 6-1 lead, and it seemed the Texans were dead in the water.

In a questionable decision, Mets manager Bill Perry sent starter Dennis Ribant out for the ninth inning. Roy White led off the inning with a double for Dallas. Perry then removed Ribant and brought in Dick Hall. Donald Gordon tripled to score White, making the score 6-2. Chuck Staniland followed up Gordon with a single to make the score 6-3. Edwin Chasteen singled and then Hall beaned James Davis to load the bases. Pinch hitter Alfred Paschal doubled, clearing the bases and tying the game at six. That marked the end for Hall as Perry brought in Bob Garibaldi. Garibaldi retired the next three hitters, sending the game to extra innings.

Neither team scored again until the top of the 13th inning. Jesse Fischer led off the inning with a solo homer, giving the Mets a 7-6 lead. Dick Drott came on to pitch in the bottom of the 13th. While he did give up a single to Choo Choo Coleman, he didn't allow anyone to score. Joe Pignatano flew out to center field to end the game as the Mets dog piled on the mound.

It was the second title for the New York Mets in three years. They also won in 1962, defeating the Dallas Texans. The two titles ties the Texans for most in league history.

Jim Lefebvre won Continental Series MVP. He hit .462 with one home run and six RBI's. He also scored five runs.

YANKEES WIN THE PENNANT

The New York Yankees have won the American League pennant with a little less than a week to play in the regular season. They will most likely take on the San Francisco Giants in the World Series, although the Los Angeles Dodgers have an outside chance at capturing the National League.

The Yankees will be returning to the World Series after finishing fourth in the American League last year. They're looking to claim their first title since 1964.

The Yankees have been led by the potent three-four combo of Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. Maris is hitting .251 with 32 homers, while Mantle is hitting .301 with 34 homers.

HOUSTON, TEXAS, MONDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1964 -- The Nation's Sixth City

HOUSTON HONORS SPACE PROGRAM WITH NEW NAME

The Houston Colt .45s are now the Houston Apollos owner Craig F. Cullinan Jr. revealed at a pep rally outside the new stadium on Sunday. The name honors the Apollo space program that local government entity NASA recently started. The Apollo program intends to land a man on the moon in the near future. The first Apollo launch is scheduled for early 1965.

"I think it's a perfect name for our franchise," former Houston mayor Roy Hofheinz said. "Moving into this new stadium, we wanted to move in a new direction and start a new era of Houston baseball."

With the Apollos moving into a futuristic stadium, a domed stadium that is the first of its kind in the world, they will also have futuristic looking uniforms. Star outfielder Jim King modeled the new home uniform, while the hit streak king Jim Piersall modeled the away.

"I'm ready to fill up this stadium in blue and red," King said.

The move to blue and red marks a shift from the navy blue and orange of the Colt .45s era.

Cullinan and Hofheinz also revealed the new logo at the pep rally.

YANKEES WIN FALL CLASSIC

The New York Yankees have won the World Series in six games, defeating the San Francisco Giants 10-3 at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.

The game was tied until the bottom of the fifth, but the Yankees busted open for five runs, taking a 6-1 lead. Lee Thomas, who won series MVP, hit a three run shot in that inning. The Yanks scored four more in the eighth, two off a homer by starting pitcher Don Cardwell.

Cardwell also pitched magnificently, going the complete game and allowing just three runs. He scattered eight hits and walked two while striking out four.

The Yankees become the second New York team to win a title in professional baseball this year, as the New York Mets of the Continental League defeated the Dallas Texans to win the Continental Cup last month.

"We're the best team in baseball," New York Yankees owner Dan Topping said. "We are the nation's true champion."

New York Mets executive William Shea took offense to the comments by Topping. "They won 86 games in their regular season and we won 84, but they played about 20 more games than us," Shea said. "I guarantee if we played them it wouldn't go well for them."

The title marks the 20th in Yankees history, far and away the most by a single baseball franchise.

ST. LOUIS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1964

CARDINALS OFFICIALLY CEASE OPERATIONS

With the official end of the league year on Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals have ceased operations. The Cardinals finished their final season 76-78, two games below .500. It marked their 18th straight season without winning a pennant, and their seventh straight season finishing under .500.

The only difference between this year and year's past was the attendance numbers. Hoping to save the ballclub, Cardinals fans came out to the ballpark in droves, coming third in Major League Baseball and second in the National League in attendance.

"It's a sad day for St. Louis," owner Gussie Busch said. "The fans of this city obviously love this team. I love this team. We just couldn't operate under Major League Baseball's business model."

All of the players from the Cardinals became free agents with the demise of the franchise. While the team struggled on the field, players like Ken Boyer, Curt Flood, Bob Gibson, and Jim Fregosi will be attractive names on the free agent market.

YANKEES, METS TO MEET IN EXHIBITION SERIES

The New York Yankees and New York Mets will play a three game exhibition series at Yankee Stadium beginning tomorrow. It has been named the Battle for New York.

Both teams had successful seasons in 1964, as the Yankees won the World Series and the Mets won the Continental Cup. Yankees owner Dan Topping and Mets executive William Shea have traded jabs since the end of the World Series. The two decided that the best way to settle the score was to meet on the field.

"I don't care that our league is new. I don't care that they have 20 titles. We are the best team in the world and I expect this series to prove that," Shea said.

"The only reason we're entertaining them is because I respect Mr. Shea, but this won't even be a competition," Topping said.

Yankees Bomb Mets

The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets 8-2 in game one of the Battle for New York on Wednesday. Mickey Mantle led the way for the Yankees, smacking two home runs.

The Mets came to play, scoring in the top of the first inning. Jim Lefebvre singled off Yankee starter Don Cardwell to start the game, then later scored on a bases loaded walk by Dick Stuart.

The Yankees struck back in the bottom half of the frame when Mantle hit the first of his two home runs. This one was a two-run shot into the upper deck in right field. Mantle supplied the Yankees with their next run in the third, when he lined a homer just over the right field wall to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

The Mets narrowed the lead in the top of the fifth when third baseman Gil McDougald homered to left field. The Yanks would answer back in the bottom half of the inning when World Series MVP Lee Thomas hit a two-run shot. The homer chased Dennis Ribant, who took the loss.

The Yankees scored two more in the seventh on a two-RBI single by Roger Maris and then again in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Maris. The sacrifice fly would be the last run of the game for either team as the Yankees won 8-2.

The Battle for New York returns tonight. Paul Toth will pitch for the Mets and Vernon Kemp will pitch for the Yankees. The Mets will be the home team even though the game is being played at Yankee Stadium.
