Kim began his career 2-11-1, losing to Katsuo Saito, Tetsuya Kamagami, Hiroshi Kobayashi, Eigo Takagi and going 1-2-0 against Katsutoshi Aoki. He fought for the OPBF title twice in this 14 fight span including the third bout of his career; all 14 bouts were settled by decision in 10 or 12 rounds. Following this baptism by fire, Kim settled in for a decent career that saw him score some nice victories and take both the Korean and OPBF featherweight belts. He beat Jerry Stokes, Zensuke Utagawa, Kuwashi Shimizu, Shig Fukuyama, Ushiwakamaru Harada and drew with Antonio Gomez. He was stopped three times in 61 pro bouts.
