It's nice to see Bronze Aparicio get some love at SS but I think he's slightly worse than Bronze Belanger, who has been putting up strong WAR totals for one of my FTP teams.

I'm wondering if anyone has ideas on Bronze pitchers? I have an all-Bronze team going, and the available pitchers (especially SPs) seem to be a gamble/crapshoot. With position players it's much easier to find undervalued gems in the lower tiers because there's a lot of different ratings in play. I find pitchers to be much more of a direct function of STU/MOV/CON, and therefore the higher rated ones are usually better.

I see the 66 OVR Alex Claudio used a lot in gold leagues as a reliever/lefty specialist.

The 69 OVR Larry Gura SP I've seen some also.

Charlie Lea, Rich Hill, Touki Toussaint, Daniel Norris and Shane Carle, who was my best bronze pitcher at the start of PT 20, but its a live card and he dropped a little since the start of the season. The best bronze pitchers are reliever like Colome and Claudio. Pitchers suck in bronze like you said in your post.

Your best best is to try and find pitchers with low stuff, but higher than average movement and control. I cannot think of any of the top off my head, but there are a few bronze pitchers like this.

1b 74 OVR McGwire was hitting 230 through 64 games and I had enough of seeing stat lines like 4 LOB and 3 K's every game so I picked up 69 Hardware Heroes Wes Parker for 35 PP. He's on an absolute tear through 14 games. I miss the HR rating with him but he's driving in runs with his 89 gap power rating.

I will add another to the bad fielder but good hitter low budget baller pick.

1944 All-Star Dixie Walker 74 OVR

Not a great outfielder. But has good contact and gap power and does not strike out much. Also has enough power to not be just a singles hitter. Walks are below average but not terrible.
In a platoon he is much better against RHP as well.
Not many go on sale so the sell price is a little bit high.

Addition>>2B Aurelio Rodriguez... decent hitter, and as good on defense (if not better) than Aparicio/Belanger

Bronze Aparicio/Belanger/Marion are the best defensive infielders in the game. Aurelio is not particularly close to them, but obviously still a good defender.

Rookie Sensation Richie Ashburn (71) is tearing it up for me so far. .360 average in 50 at bats. Reliable defense in the outfield, trains up to 97 in left, 84 in right, and begins as a 71 in center. Paid 205 for mine, you should be able to get him for around that, maybe a tiny bit more. Worth every point though.

Also, I have updated my list. Some players have had their latest 7-day values updated, and some have had their all-time averages slotted in due to a massively inflated or deflated 7-day average.

Both of those guys have identical defensive ratings...103 in range/arm/DP and 100 in error. The nice thing about Belanger is he's 6'0" so isn't as much of a drag to play at 1B compared to the shrimpier Aparicio (although it's kind of a waste to play either of them there).

Belanger has 82/72/89 in speed/stealing/baserunning whereas Aparicio is 92/92/91. Advantage Aparicio. Belanger has 44/2 in sac bunt/bunt for hit and Aparicio is 44/82. That 82 can't be understated as a way to get him on base!

Aparicio is ~5 points better in each of contact/power and 34 points better in avoid K. Slight edge to Belanger in gap power and 17-point advantage in to him in batting eye. Aparicio is a pull groundball hitter and Belanger is a spray groundball hitter.

From a purely defensive POV, these players are a wash outside of Belanger's height advantage. On offense, it's more that Belanger would fit a team that prioritizes taking walks while Aparicio would better fit a team that steals bases, bunts for hits, and tries to avoid striking out.

My team recently made it to Perfect level and Aparicio is on pace for 3.2 WAR. Just 12 games played so far, but with the right strategy settings he just might be level-proof.

I love the Aparicio love going on. Gonna pick him up on one of my other teams and see how it goes, since I can't do it on my National League theme team main.

I don't think you'll be disappointed...here are snapshots of how his career has gone for my team at multiple levels. I paid 1125 PP for Aparicio back when prices were higher--he's been going for 500 PP average over the previous week.

What are your settings? That sure seems easy on the eyes.

Oops. Sorry. I meant your screen. Mine is black, while yours is lighter colored. How do I change my settings to match that?

Main --> OOTP Settings --> change the skin from the default OOTP 20 dark to OOTP 20.

I'll throw in votes for the following:

66 OVR Larry Bowa (UT): He can train to 110/102/94 at 2B/3B/SS and he hits like a semi-wet noodle (as opposed to some guys.... like Aparicio.... who hit like a completely wet noodle!). He's also very cheap - I got him for my smallball team for 45 PP.

70 OVR Willie Davis (CF): goes for around 250. 87/63/69 in LF/CF/RF (starts out trained at CF). Hits surprisingly well. Weak against lefties but holds his own against RHP. I keep saying "I'll play him here until I get a better guy at CF" and he's still there 3 years later.

63 OVR Brian Harper (C): And Unsung Hero card but I got him for 37 PP. Hits like a demon. Terrible defense (he's like a 10 at catcher...). Did I mention he hits like crazy? Has a 95 Avoid K vs RHP.

70 OVR Al Dark (SS): I've had great success with him. Blue/Green ratings in the middle infield. He's hit well for me. Cost me 326 PP.

and one that may have been mentioned before:

79 OVR Merv Rettenmund (RF): Green in LF and RF. Hits well, with decent power. Suitable for use as a backup corner OF or a starter until you save up for a really good guy. Got him for 700 (is that budget still?).

I have Bowa on my main. Plays well enough splitting time with 70 Ozzie. I'm intrigued by the 63 Harper as a DH, but right now Felipe Alou's not doing terrible so I'll wait on him.

I considered Al Dark before I went for the cheaper Bowa. I'll revisit him once I fill a more pressing need in my rotation.

Rettenmund looks like a good platoon candidate against lefties. Couldn't see myself using him since the avoid K's rating is a bit low for my taste, and as a corner outfielder he's merely middle of the road. However, I could understand why he'd be a fine budget (sub-1,000 points) pickup.

Looking at guys on the auction house who I can't use on my main team, but could use on my other teams, I would suggest that people give Chris Singleton a try. Excellent defensive potential, with all three positions training up over 100. Left Field in particular could be trained up to 120. Borderline useless against lefties, but he looks like he could be a decent lead-off man or a sparkplug down the bottom of the order in a lineup vs righties.

Since he dropped to Silver this week, Daniel Murphy.

I have him at 1st base for the Totallers; he gets replaced in late innings for defense.

However, he has consistently hit around .300 for me, including PL last week. And he started PL on Monday with a .345 avg.

My ballpark is set to contact/gap.

Aparicio is my utility back up, having added Lou Boudreau late last week. If Lou doesn't start hitting a bit better, I may sell him and grab an upgrade elsewhere while putting Aparicio back in as a starter.

Ironically, I've had good results from Furcal on my Braves team (Bakery). He's consistently hitting and swiping bags, but that error rate hurts a bit. Aren't many high Def SS's for Atlanta (outside of guys like Simmons who is an Angels card).
Soroka who I picked up as a Silver is now a Gold, but he hasn't been as solid as he was in PT19. However, he keeps playing like he is, they'll need to do a bit of adjusting those starting assumptions if you ask me. He should have at least still had a future legend card.
