2073 Season (MLB All-Stars)

2073 All-Star Teams
It’s time to celebrate the best players in the Major Leagues! All-stars were announced today, see the results below. Sidenote: Los Angeles Lakers SS Donny Jeter made the All-Star Team! Our boy is using every single one of his 37 overall ratings points this year, tuning up opposing pitchers with a .347 AVG. Always the most selfish of the Jeter Bros, Donny will rub this in Derek and Darryl’s nose for years to come. This will be Donn’y 5th All-Star appearance… Derek only has 3. Darryl only has 1 – sympathy vote?

This year, the American League will be represented by these All-Star performers:

2073 Season (MLB All-Star Game)

2073 All-Star Game:
Great game… The NL put two on the board in the top of the 9th to take a 9-8 lead and CL Garett Hag of Orlando City fame closed it out for the AL.

Notable: Jeter didn't even get in the game (injured)... I'm going to pretend that he was out partying all night before the contest and was asleep when they called on him to pinch hit.

2073 Season (MLB July)

July 2073 (MLB):
Seattle’s fantastic play continued throughout July as they put up a 17-8 record. During the month they managed to win all but one series and swept the Cowboys in Dallas. Over the last couple of months, Seattle has become something of an offensive juggernaut… They lead the AL in Runs, AVG, and OBP. In other news, Josiah and the Jaguars crept up to the #2 spot while Montreal has started to take a low-key nosedive all the way down to the #6 spot.

Notable: Brooklyn’s SP Isiah Zuno had a great month on the mound and went a perfect 5-0. More importantly… look at the ‘stache! LOOK AT IT.

Also notable: The Dallas Cowboys are 1-9 in their last 10. Ouch.

Also, also notable: Portland’s Eloy Delando has cooled off a bit and is now ranked 5th in the league for HR’s at 23 & pacing to 35. He’s also still looking super aggro. Get that man a Voodoo Donut! He clearly needs a little pick-me-up.

July Power Rankings (Top 15):
1) Seattle Sounders
2) Jacksonville Jaguars
3) Oklahoma City Thunder
4) Los Angeles Galaxy
5) Pittsburgh Steelers
6) Montreal Impact
7) Vancouver Whitecaps
8) San Francisco 49ers
9) Brooklyn Citizens
10) Green Bay Packers
11) St. Louis Rams
12) Orlando City
13) San Diego Chargers
14) Houston Dynamo
15) Toronto Reds BC

2073 Season (Shortlist News)

Welp... SS Donny Jeter, fresh off of his All-Star Game no-show was traded to the Toronto Reds BC for a couple of bootleg relievers and a 12-pack of O'Douls... His great play has continued up north, so there is that.

2073 Season (MLB August)

August 2073 (MLB):
The New York Jets’ SP Santiago Dereau put together a fantastic month for his club as he went 4-0 in 6 starts. Meanwhile, his club did all they could to put themselves into the wildcard picture and now sit only 2 games behind the Dallas Cowboys for the final spot. Montreal managed to move up to the #4 spot in the power rankings after finishing the month 13-12 which tells you how good everyone else did in August. They did put up 22 runs at home against the Green Bay Packers, so they have that going for them. Josiah and the Jaguars refuse to go away, but Seattle has managed to keep their lead intact to finish the month with the #1 spot atop the rankings firmly in their grasp.

Notable: Philadelphia 3B Austin Tolzmann and Phoenix SS Derek Jeter both put their 2000th career hit on the board. Tolzmann managed to accomplish the feat one day before Derek. For the record, Derek was a year younger…

Also notable: LF Eloy Delando, of the Portland Timbers, is still super aggro. This guy needs to go to an anger management support group or something.

August Power Rankings (Top 15):
1) Seattle Sounders
2) Oklahoma City Thunder
3) Jacksonville Jaguars
4) Montreal Impact
5) Los Angeles Galaxy
6) Green Bay Packers
7) Pittsburgh Steelers
8) San Francisco 49ers
9) Brooklyn Citizens
10) San Diego Chargers
11) Orlando City
12) St. Louis Rams
13) Carolina Panthers
14) Toronto Reds BC
15) Dallas Cowboys

2073 Season (MLB September)

September 2073 (MLB):
September is the playoffs are set. If Seattle doesn’t win this thing… SMH.

Notable: Seattle first baseman Austin Rollins had a season that places him among the greats, winning the 22nd Triple Crown in MLB history. Clearly one of the best players in the American League this year, he compiled a .343 batting average with 220 hits, 20 doubles, no triples, 41 home runs and 133 RBIs.

Also equally notable: There's a new Triple Crown winner - Sounders ace Bradley Hughes powered his way to the top of the American League in wins, strikeouts and ERA. He was the league's best in all three major pitching categories. In his superb year, the 25-year-old hurler chalked up 20 wins, totaled 331 strikeouts and posted a 2.32 ERA. Hughes finished the year 20-6. It looks like a Victor Pacheco Award might be in his future, too.

I mean… does that ever happen?

2073 MLB (Offseason)

As luck would have it, the OOTP Gods decided that Donny & Derek should be on the same team for what will be their 15th major league season. Donny signed a 1-year contract with the Naperville Nibblers of the Bush League for $14.1M which was then purchased by the Phoenix Suns. He starts the season as the DH while Derek gets the call to be the Suns' everyday 1B.

So, not because I want to, but because I have to, we will be following the Phoenix Suns series by series for the 2074 season. I'll post the NCAA Bracket, and highlight some stuff around the league, but, for all intents and purposes, Strangeverse just became a Phoenix Suns Dynasty...

Sidenote: Derek seems half happy, half confused about the situation if the look on his facegen is legit.

2074 Season (MLB April 2-8)

Phoenix starts the season in San Francisco where they will face one of the leagues most formidable Ace's in SP Landon Sampson. The 2-Time Victor Pacheco Award winner has a career ERA of 2.26. He finished second in the VP Award voting for 2072. San Fran finished the season at 84-78 and bowed out in the second round of the playoffs, losing to the NL Champion Oklahoma City Thunder in 6 games. After the three-game set in the Bay Area, our Suns head home to face the Vancouver Whitecaps, who, like the Suns, did not make the playoffs. The Whitecaps have one of the premier RP's in the game in Garett Hag. The 4-Time Kingston Cashmore Award Winner has a 151 ERA+ for his career and has earned 301 saves.

2074 Season (4/2-4/4 @ San Francisco)

4/2/74 (Game 1): Phoenix Suns (SP Isiah Zuno) @ San Francisco (SP Landon Sampson)
Dominant Performance by Sampson in 6-1 San Francisco Win
In his first at-bat in a Phoenix uniform the former Nibbler, Donny Jeter, hit a weak grounder to 1B Mateo Cruz for the unassisted out, the second of the inning. After looking at a ball and fouling back a cutter, Derek, sensing an opportunity to show up his brother blooped one in front of RF Kyle Denham. And, well, that was about it for the Jeter Bros. Combined they went 1-8 with 3 K’s (two for Donny). Zuno went 7.1 Innings giving up 6 runs (2 earned) with 2 walks, 4 K’s and a 2-run home run courtesy of LF Harry Duncan. The Suns committed 5 errors on the game… I. Zuno (1), P. Grant (1), J. Song (1), H. McDonnell 2 (2). 2 errors for Hamza McDonnell – we might have to give Donny some time at SS.
Player of the Game: SP Landon Sampson 8.1IP, 6H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 12K, 1HR (Our 3B Pepper Grant fouled one off to right before blasting the homer over the left field wall on the next pitch) (33rd overall pick out of Kentucky in 2067) . . . Not gonna lie, I really want to edit our boy Pepper so he becomes a stud, but I won't.

4/3/74 (Game 2): Phoenix (SP Oswaldo Flores) @ San Francisco (SP Matthew Townsend)
49ers Take Down Suns, 7-4
Donny got his first RBI on the season on a Sac Fly in the 3rd, Derek got another hit and stole his second bag of the season. In fact, Phoenix wrecked the base path in this one, finishing with 6 steals. 2B Kai-Fa Chiang stole 4 bases on the game (he stole 3rd twice – the man is a gazelle). But, the real story here is that our starter, Flores, pitched 1.1 innings and gave up 5 runs and 3 walks while SF’s starter, Townsend, put in 8-innings of 7-hit ball with 4 runs.
Player of the Game: SP Matthew Townsend 8IP, 7H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 2K (157th pick out of Wyoming in 2060)

4/4/74 (Game 3): Phoenix (SP Cleveland Cornejo) @ San Francisco (SP Justin Covert)
Suns Edge 49ers, 6-5
The Phoenix Suns knocked off the San Francisco 49ers, 6-5, at AT&T Park. Donny Jeter, who captured Player of the Game honors, was a big reason Phoenix won. The designated hitter was 4-5 with 4 singles. Not to be completely outdone, Derek went 2-4 with a 2-run homer that brought him and his brother home in the 1st inning – immediately after Donny got his first hit as a Sun on a hard-hit grounder that found its way past the first and second basemen. Side note: after stealing 7 bases in the first two games of the season, we stole zero in this one – but we did get our first win, so there is that.
Player of the Game: DH Donny Jeter 4-5, 1R, 1RBI (brought his average to .368)

Heading home to finish out the week against the Vancouver Whitecaps

2074 Season (4/6-4/8 Vs. Vancouver)

4/6/74 (Game 4): Vancouver (SP Julian Brooks 0-0, 0.00 ERA) @ Phoenix (SP Ash Newman 0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Whitecaps Slip Past Phoenix, 5-4
The only thing worse than losing your home opener is losing game 7 of the World Series at home. I might be being a bit dramatic there, I know it. We gave Old Man Donny the day off and Derek, lost without his brother in the lineup, went 1-4 with a run, a walk, and a strikeout looking. Ash only managed to pitch 2.1 innings – he left with arm soreness after only giving up 2 hits and 1 earned.
Player of the Game: SP Julian Brooks 6.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 5 K’s, and gave up a homer to PEPPER in the 3rd (107th pick out of the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2070)

4/7/74 (Game 5): Vancouver (SP Jake Renfer 0-0, 0.00 ERA) @ Phoenix (SP Del Miller 0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Suns Deal Whitecaps Painful Loss, Suns win 12-11.
We gave Old Man Derek the day off and he missed most of this long slog. 14 innings of back and forth baseball. Donny went 2-6 with 2 runs, an RBI, 2 walks, and 3 K’s. Derek pinch hit in the 8th and drew a walk. PEPPER went 3-6 (a single and two doubles) with 3 runs, 2 RBI, and a walk. I promise that I didn’t mess with his stats.
Player of the Game: 3B PEPPER Grant 3-6, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (64th pick out of Mississippi State)

4/8/74 (Game 6): Vancouver (SP Bill Marvin) @ Phoenix (SP Isaiah Zuno)
Welp… Zuno gave up 9 runs in the 2nd inning and got yanked… Both Jeter Bros. played in the game and went a combined 6-9 with 4 runs, 3 RBI, and 1 K… Derek went 4-4! Boss. PEPPER got 5 ribbies on 2 homers including a GRAND SLAM.
Player of the Game: 3B PEPPER Grant 2-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K (64th pick out of Mississippi State)

Note: PEPPER absolutely crushed his former team in this series. He won a World Series and ROTY with Vancouver, but couldn’t agree on contract terms in the offseason and ended up in Phoenix.

We welcome Oklahoma City to town for a three-game set next...

2074 Season (4/9 - 4/11 Vs OKC)

4/9/74 (7 of 162): OKC (Tony Hultquist 0-1, 8.10 ERA) @ PHX (Oswaldo Flores 0-1, 33.75 ERA)
Hultquist Electric in 8-2 Oklahoma City Win
OKC starter, Tony Holquist, put a complete game on the board for the visiting Thunder. He was magnificent throughout, giving up only 5 hits and 2 runs (both came in the 6th inning). The Jeter Bros were meh, finishing 1-7 with an RBI (Derek) and 3 K’s (Donny, 2). OKC blew us up for 5 runs in the 9th as relievers Paul Williams and Johnny Dial stuck up the joint. Pepper came back to earth going 0-4 with a couple of embarrassing K’s.

4/10/74 (8 of 162): OKC (Tim Kelly 1-0, 1.13 ERA) @ PHX (Cleveland Cornejo (0-0, 13.50 ERA)
Suns Score Late to Upend Thunder, 4-3
After only lasting 2 innings in his season debut, Cleveland Cornejo gave us 8 solid innings. He gave up 7 hits and 3 earned on the contest and punched out 7 batters. Old Man Donny got the day off while Derek went 0-4 with 2 K’s. Pepper went 0-3 with a K, he’s in a tailspin. RF Jong-Hwan Song gave us the go-ahead run in the 8th on an RBI single, it’s his 1st RBI of the season.

4/11/74 (9 of 162): OKC (Carson Vu 0-1, 2.25 ERA) @ PHX (Ask Newman 0-0, 3.86 ERA)
Suns Prevail, 5-3, Over Oklahoma City
The Jeter Bros really showed their age in this one as they went a combined 1-8 with 5 K’s – they contributed back-to-back strikeouts twice in the game. TWICE. Donny contributed 3 while Derek put 2 of them on the board. Pepper is still in a bad way, he went 0-4 and struck out twice. Phoenix center fielder Mitchell Cusac helped the Suns to the win. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the 28-year old center fielder stroked a run-scoring single. For the game, Cusac went 2-4 with 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs. Ash went 7 strong with 9 K’s, 12 hits and 3 earned runs.

Pepper, oh Pepper... 0-11 on the series. Yikes.

Up next… a 4 ½ hour flight to Montreal for a 4-game set.

2074 Season (4/12-4/15 @ Montreal)

4/12/74 (10 of 162): Phoenix (Del Miller 0-1, 7.20 ERA) @ Montreal (Sarkis Canby 1-0, 2.25 ERA)
Suns Get Road Win, 5-2
The Jeter Bros. came correct after the long plane ride in Montreal today, going a combined 3-8 with a run scored. Not bad for a couple of old men. Pepper continued to suck going 0-4 with 3 K’s… the kid swings at everything. Catcher Yoshi Nakamura smashed for Phoenix going 2-3 with a 3 run dinger. Miller pitched well giving us 8-innings of 8 hit, 2 run ball. He rung up 6 batters and didn’t give up any free bags today – his command was a welcome surprise. Dig.

4/13/74 (11 of 162): Phoenix (Isaiah Zuno) @ Montreal (Norm Rodriguez)
Another day, another win for Phoenix – 6-3 over Montreal.
Big day for your boy Donny Jeter as he got his 2000th hit in 1676 games… Derek hit 2K first. Donny was 1-4 with hit #2K and 3 K’s – that’s kind of funny. Pepper, oh boy… 0-4 with 3 more K’s today. Where oh where has Pepper’s stroke gone?

4/14/74 (12 of 162): Phoenix (Oswaldo Flores) @ Montreal (Ferdinand Loving)
All good things must come to an end, Montreal wins 3-2
Pepper goes 0-2, but reaches base, finally, after taking a pitch to his bicep… shook it off like a champ and ended up scoring in the inning. Old Man Derek took a rest day… Donny went 0-4 – he could’ve used a day off.

4/15/74 (13 of 162): Phoenix (Cleveland Cornejo) @ Montreal (Dejuan Burns)
Add another tick in the W column, PHX wins 5-3
Yoshi is clutch again – put a difference-making 2-run double on the board to seal the deal. Old Man Donny took a well-deserved rest while Derek went 1-4 with a run, a walk and a strikeout. PEPPER is back baby – he went 2-3 with an RBI and a walk.

2074 Season (4/16-4/18 @ Orlando City)

4/16/74 (14 of 162): Phoenix (Ash Newman) @ Orlando (Steve Unger)
Suns edge City in extras, 7-6.

2B Lucas Milbrandt put six solid at-bats together for the Suns finishing 3-6 with 2 RBI, including a run-scoring double in the top of the 11th that sealed the win for the Suns. Through 14 games, former Boilermaker, Milbrandt, has hit 4 doubles for Phoenix. While Donny rode the pine in this one, Derek went 2-5, with 2 runs and a double in the 6th. While 3B Pepper Grant did strikeout 3 times in the game, he also managed to put up his 5th double in the 6th inning to drive in a run. Starter Ash Newman gave up 4 runs in 3 innings of work.

4/17/74 (15 of 162): Phoenix - Del Miller (1-0, 4.15 ERA) @ Orlando – Nacho Valadez (0-1, 7.71 ERA)
Multi-HR Day for Nakamura as Suns Overpower City, 9-6
Phoenix catcher Yo****aro Nakamura had a 3-RBI performance, which helped his team grab a 9-6 win over the Orlando City. Del Miller earned the win for Phoenix. He lasted 5 innings, allowing 5 earned runs on 6 hits, while striking out 1. With the win, he raised his record to 2-0. The City fall to 5-9 and continue their wobbly start to the 2074 season. Donny, after sitting out the previous game, went 0-4 with 4 K’s… Yikes. Derek went 1-5 with his only hit coming in the 1st inning. Brutal day for the Jeter Bros. Pepper went 0-3, but only had 1 K – that’s called improvement.

4/18/74 (16 of 162) Phoenix – Isaiah Zuno (1-1, 7.47 ERA) @ Orlando – Jacob Shartzer (1-1, 2.30 ERA)
City Hope Win Turns Around Slow Start
Getting a good performance from the second baseman Jaden Utley, the Orlando City defeated the Phoenix Suns, 7-5. Utley was 3 for 3 with 3 singles and 2 walks, while adding 2 RBI for the City. Orlando is still hoping to get on a roll. The win is just their 6th in 15 games. Utley came through with some timely hitting for Orlando. With the score 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth and one down, Utley hit a 2-1 fastball for a 2-run single. His 18th hit of the season made it 5-3, Orlando. The Jeter Bros went a combined 4-8 and Derek had 3 RBIs in the losing effort. Pepper? 0-4 with 3 K’s.

Note: San Diego Chargers SP Prior Balazs pitched a no-no at home against the Philadelphia 76ers. The former Texas Tech standout completed the first no-hitter of a Red Raider in the history of Strange Verse. Balazs faced 27 batters, had 9 strikeouts and gave up 2 walks in a dominating effort.

Phoenix @ San Diego (4/20 – 4/22)
17 of 162: Oswaldo Flores (0-3, 6.91 ERA) Vs. Arnaldo Romero (2-0, 0.36 ERA)
Flores Hurls Complete Game at PETCO Park
The Phoenix Suns picked up a win at PETCO Park, knocking off the San Diego Chargers, 11-2. Starting pitcher Oswaldo Flores was an essential part of his team's success. The Suns, now 11-6, have been playing some good baseball. Jeter Bros smashed, Milbrandt with another stellar effort, and our boy Pepper didn’t strikeout.

Chargers Topple Suns with Late Rally
Phoenix first baseman Derek Jeter was sensational. He went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. San Diego beat the Suns, 8-7. Jeter was named the player of the game despite the loss. The win brings the Chargers to 10-8, a promising start as the team looks to return to the playoffs. Donny sat (again) and Pepper had a good day in the box despite striking out twice. Cornejo got smashed.

19 of 162: Ash Newman Vs. Ryan Burg
Ryan Burg was superb against Phoenix. The right-hander, who is tied for 6th in the NL in strikeouts with 33, had a changeup that was virtually unhittable at times. The result was a 3-2 Chargers victory. The win gives San Diego a record of 11-8. We had 3 hits and 11 strikeouts, but Pepper only contributes one of them. Ash pitched well. We let him down.

2074 Season (4/23 - 4/25 @ LAL)

Phoenix Suns (11-8) @ Los Angeles Lakers (9-10)
Outside of scoring a lot of runs we aren’t much different than the Lakers. We both sit in the bottom half for AVG and OBP, we are tied for 1st in home runs with 24 each, our starters are bad & our bullpens are competent enough to pick up the slack (or at least stop the bleeding most nights). A bounce here and a bad hop there and we can easily have our records flipped. This is a well-matched series featuring two teams who should finish outside of the playoffs this year. I mean, it’s been a fun month for the Suns, but we should come back to earth soon.

20 of 162: Del Miller (2-0, 5.50 ERA) @ C.J. Crush (Great name, better facegen) (2-0, 3.18)
SS Hamza McDonnell opened the game for us with a triple off CJ Crush, the Jeter Bros followed that up with a K and a pop-out before 2B Luca Milbrandt brought Hamza home. The Lakers tied it up in the 2nd, but Derek answered back for us in the top of the 4th with a towering solo shot to make it 2-1. After scoring again in the top of the 6th we gave up another run to the home team and in the end won the game 5-2… Nice start to the series for us. Donny went 0-4 with 3 K’s and your boy Pepper went 0-3 with 1 K. Pepper is now batting .219 – not wonderful. SP Del Miller went 8 strong innings, fanning 10 and only giving up 2 runs.

Elsewhere… SP Harper Johnese (Carolina Panthers) pitched a 6-hit shutout in New York. He struckout 7 and walked 4 for the game as the Panthers beat the Jets, 1-0. He also has a solid mustache game… So many players in this universe have strong mustache games.

21 of 162: Isaiah Zuno (1-2, 6.86 ERA) @ John Aivazian (0-3, 10.13 ERA)
Donny gets the day off… Luca Milbrandt hits a double in the 1st, Derek leaves him there… we did, however, manage to put 2 on the board in the top of the second, courtesy of your boy Pepper who hit a 2-RBI triple – it’s all or nothing with this guy. Pepper strikes again in the 4th with an RBI single. Legend. We gave up runs in the 4th and 5th, but with the 3 runs that Pepper brought in today, it just wasn’t enough for the Lake-Show. Phoenix wins 3-2.

Elsewhere… SP Max Harrington (Golden State Warriors) shut out the Los Angeles Galaxy in a 1-0 win for the Bay Area stalwarts. He posted 10 K’s and no walks – the kid has been for real so far going a perfect 4-0 with a 2.34 ERA. He wears a really unfortunate chinstrap beard. Nobody likes it.

22 of 162: Cleveland Cornejo (2-0, 6.20 ERA) @ Julen Morales (2-2, 3.45)
Old Man Donny gets another day off… Pepper is sitting as well (lefty problems)… 3B Kai-Fa Chiang blasts a solo shot in the top of the first & Derek follows it up with a nice base knock up the gut – we settle for the one, but I like what I see so far. LA tied it up in the bottom of the 4th, but C Yo****aro Nakamura gets it back with an RBI single in the top of the 6th and later in the inning LF PJ Amador drives in three on a double to put us up 5-1. The Lakers chip away at it a bit in the bottom of the 6th & 7th, scoring a single run in each frame before we put it out of reach with a 2-run top of the 9th to take the lead at 7-3. That’s where we left it – bring out the brooms!

Elsewhere… SP Arnaldo Romero (SDC) pitched a 3-hit clean sheet against OKC – my man punched 12 out and gave freebies out to three lucky batsmen. Killer ‘stache on this guy – I’m telling you, man, 2074 is a good year for lip eyebrows.

Next up we head to Phoenix for some home-cookin' and welcome San Fran to town for 3 followed by a 4-game set against the Chargers...

2074 Season (4/27-4/29 Vs San Francisco)

San Francisco 49ers (12-10) @ Phoenix Suns (14-8)… 4/27 – 4/29
So far in this young season, we have lost two series – one in San Diego and the other in San Francisco. California is a problem. Donny has been mostly relegated to the bench due to his poor play… hopefully, he’ll turn it around to contribute during this homestand as we’ve sold a lot of tickets on the back of our Jeter Bros ad campaign. On paper, the 49ers is a good club – they’ve played in poor form of late (going 5-5 in their last 10) – but the talent is there. They have a really good rotation and stout defense that currently sits at 3rd in the National League for runs against, they are 2nd in starters ERA, and 4th in defensive efficiency. Their bullpen is a problem, so we’ll need to make their starters work, and they are a middling club at the plate. Good opportunity to make a good impression on the home fans… let’s hope our club doesn’t squander it.

23 of 162: Justin Covert (2-2, 2.45 ERA) @ Oswaldo Flores (1-3, 5.01 ERA)
Note: Oswaldo went the distance in his last outing against the Chargers and only gave up 2 runs. It was our only win of that series… also, his ‘stache game? On fleek.
First and foremost, we gave Donny the start at DH today, because, well, why not… and he struck out during his first at-bat, because, well, why not… Derek did his best ‘whatever you can do, I can do better’, and struck out looking right after him. This was not the start we were looking for. In the bottom of the 3rd, RF JR Marsh hit a leadoff triple, and your boy Pepper hit a nicely placed almost-sac fly – but Marsh duck-waddled home and was called out on a one-hopper hucked by the 49ers Center Fielder. We finally broke through in the bottom of the 5th when your boy, my boy, everybody’s boy PEPPER hit a 3 run jack off of Colvert to put us up 3-0… C Nakamura hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 6th, stole 3rd and then scored a run on a wild throw to put us up 5-0 – DIG. And then the rails came off as the 49ers pulled the ol’ San Francisco treat out and put up 5 on us in the top of the 7th to tie it up. Great. Not to worry though – Yoshi strikes again with another RBI double to re-secure the lead… for a minute. San Fran scored again in the 8th, but PEPPER wasn’t having it – your boy put another baseball into the cheap seats and secured the eventual 7-6 win. Score one for the good guys!

File under awesome: Pepper was named the #2 Performance of the Day after going 2-3, with 2 ding dongs, 4 riblets, 2 runs and…. Wait for it… wait for it… a walk.

24 of 162: Ryan Wiggins (0-2, 5.85 ERA) @ Ash Newman (1-1, 4.57 ERA)… We got ourselves a pitching duel folks!
Guess who was tired today? Old Man Donny… what else is new? After giving up 2 runs to the 9ers through the top of the 7th, we finally got some offense going in the bottom of the 7th when Wells hit a solo shot followed by a couple more runs courtesy of LF PJ Amador and RF Jong-Hwan Song… Derek hit his 5th jack of the season in the 8th to cushion the lead and that was all she wrote. We got a good thing going here – 5 wins in a row (3 without old man Donny).

25 of 162: Landon Sampson (2-2, 2.00 ERA) @ Del Miller (3-0, 4.50 ERA)
Listen, Landon Sampson is tough – really good pitcher – so we will take whatever we can get today. The 2-time Victor Pacheco award winner had a tough go his last time out – let’s hope that he’s still in poor form today… San Francisco wasted no time getting a run across the plate in the first and Donny, back from his day of rest, wasted no time getting caught rubbernecking a slider. This one went to extra innings after 9-innings of run-scoring quid pro quo… the 49ers scored in the top of the 10th and we did nothing in the bottom of it – Suns lose, the Jeter Bros finish a combined 2-for-10, and Pepper went 0-for-5 with 2 K’s. Win streak snapped at 5… the struggle is real you guys.

For the season we are an imperfect 3-3 against the 49ers. Lame.

2074 Season (4/30 – 5/2 Vs San Diego) – Part I

San Diego Chargers (14-11) @ Phoenix Suns (16-9)
At #9 in the most recent power ranking, San Diego, not unlike San Francisco, is a team that is better than ours on paper. They boast lights out pitching from their starters, but their bullpen is leaking and they haven’t hit a lick. They sit last in the national league for runs scored and bullpen ERA, and, with the way things have been going for us lately, they’ll need more than that. During our visit to San Diego earlier this month we were humbled after our lopsided 11-2 victory in the last two games of the series – good opportunity for some get back. They are anchored on defense by their Right Fielder, Kelford Johnson. The 2-time Gold Glove winner is struggling a bit with his hitting, but his defensive efficiency is among the best in the game. Their pitching staff is led by Ace Burt McElheny, he’s putting together a nice campaign thus far with a 1.63 ERA and a 227 ERA+ - we have our work cut out for us.

26 of 162: Burt McElheny (2-2, 1.63 ERA) @ Isaiah Zuno (2-2, 5.59 ERA)
The Chargers opened the scoring with a run in the top of the 3rd, but Zuno, ultimately, navigated the self-inflicted jam well. Through 5, we only manage to get three hits, all singles, all weak… they get another across in the 6th and with the way McElheny is dealing it’s looking like a long night for our boys in the eggplant purple and burnt orange. Another run in the 7th for the Chargers – they just keep chipping away at us – real nice discipline at the plate for the visiting team. Through 7 we only manage 4 hits, while the Chargers have put 12 on the board – they get ‘em on, just rarely across. Holding on to a 5-hit shutout in the bottom of the 9th, we finally get the crowd on their feet with a couple of base knocks (with one belonging to your boy PEPPER) before CF Mitchell Cusac, batting #8, hits a 3-run bomb to tie up the game. The Chargers get another across in the 10th, but Derek, after hitting a double, is moved over to 3rd by Milbrandt and scores on an errant throw home from CF Smith Wells – tied up! Skip brings Jong-Hwan Song in to pinch hit and he promptly sends the second pitch he sees out of the park for a 2-run walk off home run. Phoenix wins 7-4! What a game!

Elsewhere: OKC SP Josh Allen hurled a shutout in Vancouver BC – he gave up only 4 hits and 2 walks while dealing 9 K’s. Easily his finest performance so far this season.

Note: As we move into May, I will post an update on the NCAA Top 25 – Tourney start on 5/20 – and put up a quick April Recap for the MLB… Standings, Statistical Leaders, Players of the Month – you know, the usual… After that, I’ll pick up this series and post the final three of the 4-game set. Then it’s a 12-game road trip that has us up north in Chicago & Toronto before heading to OKC and then back up north to Vancouver BC – racking up those miles! Digging the series-by-series play, may just swith to this format going forward - Also, Looking to bring 12 more teams into the league over the next 6 seasons to grow it up to 36 teams - dunno... I have the MLB club logos I want to use but have to figure out what I want to do for their AAA teams.

2074 Season (End of April - NCAA)

As we enter May, with only 20 days left in the NCAA regular season, the Vanderbilt Commodores appear to have separated themselves from most of the pack, with only the Iowa Hawkeyes earning a few first-place votes in the Top 25 Poll. With a 23-10 record and a #1 ranked offense, Vanderbilt has won every series they’ve played in except for a 4-game set against Georgia Tech that saw them drop 3 in a row. The Commodores are led by Senior SP Vincent Urquhart who looks like a late first round or early second round pick in this year’s draft class. Of note: The rankings have a surprising number of unaffiliated clubs making an appearance in the top 25 with the inclusion of Ridgemont Community College, PCU, Blue Mountain State, and University of Alaska Fairbanks – looking forward to an interesting tournament in May!

1) Vanderbilt Commodores
2) Iowa Hawkeyes
3) Purdue Boilermakers
4) Kentucky Wildcats
5) Ridgemont CC Tasty Waves
6) Nebraska Cornhuskers
7) Oklahoma State Cowboys

9) Michigan Wolverines
10) Oklahoma Sooners
11) PCU Whooping Cranes
