Earl Robertson starts the series out on fire. He stops 27 shots for the opening game shutout, then allows just a single goal, making 14 saves in game two. Montreal gets the effort they need in game 3, coming back from a early 2-0 deficit to win 5-2. Bobby Bauer scored twice in the victory.

Game four heads to overtime where Toe Blake gets his 7th playoff goal to win the game. Game 5 is a wild back and forth affair. The lead changed hands four times before Toe Blake completed his hat trick and scored the cup winning goal with just 63 seconds remaining in the game. Chicago wins the game 6-5, and clinch their 4th straight Stanley Cup!!

1941 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Toronto has a great showing at the NHL awards. After a wonderful regular season, they win 3 awards, as they probably should. Milt Schmidt broke records this year, and wins the Hart. Bill Durnan proved he can play first fiddle and wins the Gardiner. Of course these are regular season awards, they failed when it counts!



Alot of Leafs and Hawks on the all-star teams this year, again, as there should be…



Roy Worters, Toronto Maple Leafs long time starting goalie has retired. Worters played 427 games, posting 68 shutouts, which is 5th all time. He’s also 4th all time in wins with 196. Worter’s number 30 will be retired by the team.



The Americans have changed their name to Brooklyn for the upcoming season. The team’s owner tried to move them to Brooklyn, but couldn’t find a suitable arena. Probably a little premature calling themselves Brooklyn, but here we are….



Another draft which contains alot of good talent. Howie Meeker falling to Montreal at 5 looks like a steal for me. I think he's gonna be a star.



If Gaye Stewart develops quickly, the Red Wings could really get back to winning titles, as they still have the talent to do so.

1941-42 NHL Regular Season

My big new years news is the New York Rangers. They haven’t really been relevant for some years now, but sit atop the NHL standings at the halfway point. Maurice Richard was drafted a few years ago, and has been developing quietly. Richard is having a breakout season but didn’t exactly struggle his first 2 seasons. He had a 27 point rookie year, and last season, approached a point a game with 44 points. Today, he’s sitting atop the scoring leaders with 35 points in 21 games. The Rocket is here, and he’s carrying the Rangers with him…

The Americans have really fallen on hard times. They have 5 wins in 32 games. The preseason outlook stated the Americans were a team that had a shot. WRONG.

They are losing a lot of money and rumours suggest that after failing to find an arena in Brooklyn, the owners will be folding the team after this season. Despite that horrible record, they have some real talent on this team. Frank Brimsek’s story has been documented, but Elmer Lach is a stud who at just 24, has 185 points in 241 games. Max Bentley, a former first overall pick, is on the verge of being a significant contributor. If Brooklyn folds, there will be some serious talent available to all!


Lach, the next NHL star?

One of the reasons for Toronto’s emergence, other then Milt Schmidt, is the ascension of Buddy O’Connor. Buddy was drafted 4th overall in 1934, and was seen as a 2 star potential player. He made his Leaf debut in the 1935/36 season, with 12 points, and just kept getting better. His point totals improved every year, and two years ago, at the age of 23, the Leafs paired him with Milt Schmidt. O’Connor is now a 4 star player, a legit first line center, who going to finish with a career high in points this year. His game ratings the last 3 years, 77! That’s insanely good. Only Apps and Schmidt put up higher numbers.



Final Standings



Buddy O’Connor and the Leafs pass the Rangers to finish first for the 2nd straight year. Chicago won’t get a bye though, as they will have to win three playoff series to win their fifth straight Stanley Cup.



Montreal’s Woody Dumart is the 2nd player to hit 75 points. The Habs have a new star! Maurice Richard has officially arrived, finishing the year with 62 points.

Syl Apps had a strong season after his injury last year. Apps gets 55 points in 40 games. Buddy O’Connor does set a career high with 58 points.

1942 NHL Playoffs

1st Round

The first round features a Stanley cup final rematch. Montreal and Chicago split the first two games of this short series, and saw game three go to overtime. In OT, Woody Dumart scored at 15:57, giving Montreal the first series win for anyone over Chicago in 5 years! The Black Hawks run is officially over!



Up one game to nothing, Syl Apps scored the second goal of game two, then left with an injury. Boston would come back to win the game and tie the series. Apps was diagnosed with a latissimus dorsi strain and would be off skates for 3 weeks. Without their star for the deciding game three, Detroit folded. The Bruins won a convincing game three, 5-1, and advanced to the semi finals.

2nd Round

Both Montreal and Boston were upset winners in the first round. Games one and two showed clearly who the stronger of the two teams was. Montreal got the shutout win in the opener and scored 8 goals in game 2. After splitting the next two, they returned to the Forum and saw the Habs dominate again to the tune of a 7-1 win eliminating Boston. The Habs outscore Boston 23-7 in the 5 game series.



Toronto, still looking to breakthrough and capitalize on their regular season success takes on the up and coming Rangers. Maurice Richard gets his first real look from the public in a important setting. Richard picks up an assist, but also his given a 10 minute misconduct as the Leafs win the opener. He’s held off the board in game 2, another 4-1 win for Toronto. The Leafs take game 3 aswell, putting the Rangers on the brink.

A 4-2 Rangers win just delays the inevitable. Toronto wins game 5, and takes the series. Milt Schmidt gets 8 points in the series, while Maurice Richard finishes with a single goal, and 18 penalty minutes. The Rangers will be back.

This is the first time Toronto and Montreal will meet for the Stanley Cup. It took 25 years, but it’s awesome for me being a Leafs fan! Montreal has the better offense. Woody Dumart had a all time great season, that rivals what Milt Schmidt did last year. He’s capable of winning this thing for the Habs. Montreal doesn’t have the defense that Toronto does, and Tiny Thompson in net isn’t a good thing. Bill Durnan is far better. This should be a entertaining back and forth series.

Haha, Tiny is now 39 years old, and he's stolen the job from stud Turk Broda. I guess it's cool the team is starting whoever they think is playing better, but Turk is a stud!!

No war sabatical's that i can see. Honestly, there are other issues with the game before i'd imagine something like that would get in. That's a great idea though for the future!

Game 1 is as advertised. Back and forth, open ice, lots of scoring! Toronto jumped out to a 2-0 lead early, but the Habs fought back. Woody Dumart collected 2 asssits, and after the period, they trailed 3-2. Both teams would score twice in the 2nd, with Dumart tying the game in the third to send the opener to overtime. In OT, Bryan Hextall nets his third goal of the playoffs at the 6:44 mark to win it for the Leafs!

Game 2 is a overtime affair and just like game one, it ends the same way. Bucko McDonald is the hero, blasting a point shot past Tiny Thompson at the 5:39 mark.

Back home in Montreal, Tiny Thompson posts a 22 save shutout to get the Habs back in the series. Bobby Bauer is the first star of game for with 3 points in a 4-1 game four win for Montreal. The series is tied at 2.


Thompson allows just one goal in games 3 and 4.

Back in Toronto, Milt Schmidt scored early, and gets an assist, while Bill Durnan makes 29 saves. The Leafs take the series lead with a 3-1 win. Game 6 continues the trend of Toronto not being able to score away from Maple Leaf Gardens. Thompson gets the shutout. Montreal wins 4-0 and we go to a game 7.

Game 7



Toronto has 1 goal away from home in this series, so being at the Gardens is a obvious advantage. Carl Liscombe scores first though. His ninth of the playoffs and it’s 1-0 Montreal.

Early in the 2nd, Cully Dahlstrom makes it 2-0, and Maple Leaf Gardens is starting to feel like Déjà vu. The Leafs are becoming the team that can’t win the big one…Neil Colville gives the fans some hope. He takes a Milt Schmidt pass and breaks the goose egg. 2-1 after two periods.

With tension rising , the Leafs control play in the third, finally, with 8 minutes remaining, Bryan Hextall puts a rebound into the next. His 5th, and we are tied at 2!!!

Just as it seemed this was gonna need overtime, Bob Carse, a 22 year old LW who is a part time player for Toronto, found himself on the ice. Carse, infront of the Montreal net, deflected a Jake Milford shot behind Tiny Thompson! GOAL! Only 14 seconds left!!! The Toronto Maple Leafs somehow come back to win the Stanley Cup!

1942 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Here are the top 10 scorers from the playoffs. If anyone following has anything they like seeing after a season, let me know. I tend to jump around and am not always consistent showing things…..



Schmidt and Durnan repeat with their Hart and Gardiner Trophies. Chicago’s Bob Fillion wins the rookie of the year with a 35 point season. The Hawks have some youth looking to help them back to the cup!





As expected, the Brooklyn Americans have ceased operations. The franchise won the 1926 Stanley Cup, and was home to Hall of Famer Buck Boucher, and future Hall of Famer, Aurel Joliat. Three huge talents are now available to everyone. Frank Brimsek, Elmer Lach and Max Bentley are difference makers. On the right team, they could start a dynasty….

With 6 teams in the league, the playoff format has changed. 4 teams will now make the playoffs. 1 will play 3, while 2 plays 4. The winners will advance to the Stanley Cup Final. All rounds are now best of 7 series.

Montreal has signed Frank Brimsek to a contract. A huge get for the Habs, who then trade Tiny Thompson, whose 39, to Detroit, for a 2nd round draft pick. I can’t believe Thompson has that much value, as he can’t play that much longer. Turk Broda, who didn’t really play this year, is still rated as one of hockey’s best goalies, and he’s 28. It would probably be smart to send him to a team like Chicago, or Boston, who need some goaltending.

Elmer Lach has decided to join Syl Apps in Detroit! Lach has become a top line player. Despite the Red Wings struggles, they remain dangerous. Adding Lach is going to make them that much better. A huge signing by the Wings.

Max Bentley decides to join the NY Rangers. Bentley is still developing, but had 16 goals last year, and is close to being that first line player NY really needs. He can now pair himself next to Maurice Richard, and veteran Charlie Conacher to form an extremely dangerous line.

The Hall of Fame announced 3 new inductees. Legends Howie Morenz, Charlie Gardiner and King Clancy have joined the shrine.



Two huge names headlined this draft, and they were taken with the first 2 picks. Doug Harvey is the highest potential player ever drafted. A full on 5 stars. He’s a member of the Boston Bruins. At 17, I don’t know if he can crack the lineup just yet, but I’m excited to see how he does.



Picked 2nd is Johnny Bower(RIP), who became one of hockey’s greatest ambassadors. It will be weird seeing him with the Red Wings, but it’s really the only pick they could make. The Red Wings adding Elmer Lach and Johnny Bower in the offseason is franchise altering. I assume Bower will watch for a season until newly acquired Tiny Thompson retires.

1942-43 NHL Regular Season

I wanted to reference the amount of top end talent around the league these days. Milt Schmidt is the only 5 star skater, and Frank Brimsek is the only 5 star goalie in hockey. After Schmidt, there are only 4 skaters higher then 4 stars. Syl Apps, Elmer Lach, Toe Blake and Maurice Richard. That’s it. There are another 5 skaters at the 3.5 mark, but you can see why top talent makes such a huge difference.

On opening night in Detroit, the Red Wings hosted the Black Hawks. 13 goals later, it was the largest win in Detroit history! Elmer Lach gets 6 points for his new team. Former first overall pick Gaye Stewart records 3 assists, and three players get hat tricks. The craziest stat of the night. Syl Apps didn’t get a single point. Detroit wins 12-1, and nothing for Apps!!

The 6 team NHL is fascinating. At new years, 5 teams are within 3 points of each other, while the Habs, who added the all world goalie they didn’t need, are in last place 7 points behind everyone! Max Bentley and his brother Doug are 2 and 3 in league scoring. Maurice Richard is officially elite, and Tiny Thompson leads the league in wins!! Predicting this league is impossible! Lets see how it all ended up!

Final Standings



I'm surprised the Rangers are out of the playoffs, while the Bruins get in. Maurice Richard and Max Bentley combined to score 48 goals, but obviously, it wasn’t enough. The Bruins improve from last place, and still have Doug Harvey listed as their 6th best dman. They will be getting much better. Detroit ascends back to first place!



Tiny Thompson and Elmer Lach worked out well for Detroit. Lach puts up the 2nd highest point total in hockey history! Milt Schmidt missed 13 games cuz of injury this year, and still put up 50 points. The Leafs might have challenged Detroit for first with Schmidt healthy.

1943 NHL Playoffs


It needs to be said. 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4 is stupid. Toronto has a much easier path to the finals then the team that finished higher then them. I guess I need a pretty powerful time machine to explain that to the powers that be!

1st Round

Billy Reay got Chicago off on the right foot scoring the overtime winner in game one for Chicago. Game 2 goes the way of the Red Wings 3-2. Getting that split was big for the Hawks as Detroit was 17-5 at home this year. Now all they need to do is take care of business on home ice.

Chicago scores twice late in the third of game three to steal the 4-3 win and take the lead in the series. Detroit responds again to tie the series behind a Pete Morin hat trick.

Tiny Thompson makes 37 saves in game 5, and Syl Apps gets 3 points. Detroit wins it 4-0, heading back to Chicago with the series lead. Nick Metz scored twice in game 6, and Tiny Thompson made 35 saves. A hard fought game and series comes to an end with a 3-2 Red Wings win. Detroit goes back to the Stanley Cup for the first time in 6 years!



Toronto avoids the game one upset waiting almost all of the first overtime before Gordon Sherritt would win the game with a shorty! Boston hangs tough in game 2 before the Leafs pull away in the third with a 6-3 win.

The Leafs need overtime in game 3, but get the big goal from Doug McCaig. After 3 hard fought games, it looks like Boston had nothing left in the tank. Toronto dominated game four, 6-0, to sweep the series.
