1955-56 NHL Season Preview

This season, instead of picking a best player and best goalie, I decided to take a shot of each team to let readers see each roster. See who is on the teams, and how good they are. All pictures are thumbnails. Click to enlarge.

Looks like Toronto needs to trade Worsley to the Rangers for something. The problem is, the Rangers don't have much either.

A goalie does end up being dealt during the season, just not involving these two teams!

Yeah, it would make too much sense for Toronto to do something rational like that (in this game, that is). Worsley for Delvecchio, maybe + Henry, would be perfect. Maybe the Leafs throw in a pick or two. Of course, you said it didn't involve those two teams. Did the Red Wings trade Bower or Pelletier to the Canadiens? That might also make sense. Oh, wait, that means that didn't happen either.

1955-56 NHL Regular Season

Montreal suffers a big blow early in the season.

Tom Johnson’s season is over. He’s the reigning Norris Trophy winner. Even though the defending champs have another Norris winner, and good depth, Johnson is in his prime, and you can’t replace him. Fractured skulls happen a lot in this game. Just saying…

Johnson is out for the season!

Johnny Bower is named goalie of the month in October. His teammate Marcel Pelletier is named goalie of the month in November. Toronto, the worst team in the league, has 2 elite goalies in Sawchuk and Worsley. Montreal, Chicago and Boston are all very happy with their goaltending. Only the Rangers have what I consider bad goaltending. The level of goaltending in hockey right now is ridiculously good. We need more teams or less goalies!

The first place Red Wings just lost Gordie Howe for 3 months. In his career, Howe has missed just 11 games in 9 seasons, so this is rare. Gordie had 36 points, in 26 games, leading the league in scoring, but tore ligaments in his ankle. He requires surgery and will be out around 3 months. Detroit is hoping he can be available for the playoffs. It will be tight! The playoffs are scheduled to begin 3 months from the day of the injury.

Gordie resting up!

At new years, its pretty much already decided who will make the playoffs. Toronto and New York just aren’t good enough. They are the bottom of the league right now. Toronto, in fifth, is 10 points out, and that’s actually better then I thought they would be. Detroit holds first place, but without Howe, Montreal and Boston should be able to pass them…

A weird and surprising trade

Marcell Pelletier leaves the Red Wings for Chicago of all places. Good for Detroit, finally making a choice. Now, Pelletier was having a great year. 20-11, with a 1.60 GAA and a .928 save percentage. He will now back up Glenn Hall who has a .931 save percentage! Hall is 24, so maybe this is insurance, but Chicago didn’t need Pelletier.

They give up Don McKenney. Don was the 1st overall draft pick for the Rangers back in 52 I believe. He’s 21 years old, and is a role player. 2nd/3rd line type. In the right situation, he could probably be a 50 point guy. His career high at this young age is 12 goals and 13 assists.

The very next day, the same two teams complete a blockbuster.

Allan Stanley is a top level defenseman, who has figured out how to provide offense in this goal-less era of the NHL. He had 32 points in 50 games when the trade took place, and plays 25 minutes a game. Ron Stewart is the key player going back to Chicago. He’s a good young center, who has 43 points in 48 games this year. Stewart is a excellent defensive option in addition to the offense he provides. Chicago does need to add offense to help out Beliveau. I think Stewart is the type of player who will always win. Does everything. Seems like an even trade, as both teams get something out of this. Stewart being only 23 is probably the reason Chicago got a slightly better deal.

Stewart getting his physical after reporting to Chicago.

Milt Schmidt just became the first player to play 1000 games!! Congrats to Schmidt, who at 37, is still playing every game for Detroit. He’s not the player he once was. He’s getting just 7 minutes a game these days, and has just 9 points on the year, but players in this game are usually retired by now, and Schmidt is still playing on a good team!

Schmidt is still going!

Final Standings

Detroit does fall from first place after losing Gordie Howe. Montreal didn’t seem to miss Tom Johnson at all. If Howe returns for the playoffs, their series vs Montreal will be something.

The Rangers beat the Leafs out by just 2 points avoiding last place. Toronto will get another chance at the number one pick, desperately needed to pick a stud, and then not trade him away for **** you don’t need!!!

Marcel Pelletier plays just 2 games with Chicago after the trade. He allowed 6 goals in those games.

Ron Stewart, brought in to provide Chicago with some offense after Jean Beliveau, gets just 11 points in 20 games. Chicago needs more scoring from him. Allan Stanely actually outscored Stewart after the deal, with 14 points!

Gordie Howe returned to the lineup on March 10th, and played the final 5 games of the season. He got a goal and 3 assists in those games.

1956 NHL Playoffs

Montreal Vs Detroit

With Johnny Bower as the undisputed starter in Detroit, I think…. The Red Wings are able to shut out the first place Habs in game one. Bower stops 20 shots, and Milt Schmidt is the first star with 2 assists. 3-0 Detroit. George Armstrong and Dickie Moore make sure Montreal isn’t shutout again scoring early in game two, but that lead won’t hold. Detroit is able to tie the game at 2’s to force overtime. In OT, Bobby Baun finds the back of the net on the power play, tying the series with a 3-2 Montreal win.

Bower with the game one shut out!

Down 2-1 in the third period of game three, Montreal’s Billy Harris tied the game, then Gerry Melnyk pots the winner with 75 seconds remaining. 3-2 Montreal, they lead the series 2-1. Detroit needs to win game four at home. They come out of the gate like they needed to. Pete Conacher scores twice, and Rudy Migay adds another for a 3 goal first period. The Wings coast the rest of the way to tie the series with a 6-2 win. Conacher gets the hat trick.

Pete Conacher with a hatty!

Gordie Henry(I saw Henry playing all season and assumed it was Sugar Jim! Guess not) and Johnny Bower each make 32 saves in game five, and allow just a single goal a piece in regulation, but something had to give. Red Kelly broke the deadlock at the 4:52 mark of OT, winning it 2-1 for Montreal. With elimination looming, the Wings again got off to a good start, leading 2-0 after a period. Montreal is able to bounce back and tie the game early in the third. New Red Wing Don McKenney’s 3rd of the playoffs is the go ahead marker, and the eventual winning goal. 4-2 Detroit forces a game 7.

Gordie Henry is playing net in Montreal

In game 7, both teams need their starts to step up. Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay have combined for 2 goals and 4 assists. Not the production expected. Don McKenney opens the scoring, his 4th. What a great trade picking him up!!

If the first period belonged to Detroit, the 2nd is owned by Montreal who record 17 shots, but can’t get one past Bower. 1-0 after two.
Just seconds into the third, Milt Schmidt takes a penalty, and the Habs take advantage. George Armstrong ties it at 1.

Halfway through the frame, someone steps up! It’s Gordie Howe!! His 2nd of the playoffs gives Detroit the 2-1 lead with 9 minutes left! 2 minutes later, Montreal’s big man replies! Ted Lindsay scores on a breakaway! 2-2! 30 seconds later, Red Kelly beats Bower on the short side! 3-2 Montreal leads! It’s their first lead of the game.

Detroit is gonna regret this one. They had this game and 30 seconds was enough to blow it. Montreal holds on to take game seven, 3-2, and wins the series in 7!!

Chicago Vs Boston

Newly acquired Ron Stewart scored the first goal of the series, but then Chicago’s biggest problem crept up again. Lack of depth. They couldn’t get another one past Jacques Plante. Boston was able to beat Glenn Hall 3 times though. 3-1 Bruins win the opener. Tod Sloan had a goal and an assist. Boom Boom Geoffrion, Vic Stasiuk and Fleming Mackell all also scored for Boston….In the first period!! That was enough to hold up. 4-2 was the final. 2-0 series lead for the Bruins.

Jacques Plante has his Bruins up 2-0.

Boston waited until the third period to score some goals this game. Doug Harvey got the winning goal as part of a three goal 3rd. 4-2 Bruins. Facing elimination, Chicago’s offense again couldn’t produce much, but their defense was great, holding Boston to 16 shots. They do manage to get 2 by Plante, enough to win it 2-1.

Hall has no margin for error.

Game 5 is a different story. Geoffrion and Pronovost get Boston up early, and the Blackhawks had no answer. Jacques Plante gets the shutout, as Boston eliminates Chicago with a 3-0 win! Jean Beliveau does get 4 points in the series, but that alone can't be enough to win. Chicago needs to continue building depth.

Montreal is a much deeper team then Chicago, so the Bruins will have a much different challenge on their hands. They limited Beliveau in the semi's and had a rather easy time against the rest of the Blackhawks. Montreal gets scoring from lots of places. It's why they have been so successful of late.

The Bruins have the horses to do it though. Doug Harvey, Tim Horton and Marcel Pronovost make up the best D unit in hockey. Jaqcues Plante is a much better goalie then Gordie Henry.

I'm thinking this series will be decided by Montreal's second line(which is good enough to be a top line). If Armstrong, Harris and Moore can score, the Habs will repeat!

The Stanley Cup opens with Red Kelly and Ted Lindsay scoring goals 24 seconds apart. Gordie Henry makes 37 saves, which speaks to how good Boston actually was in this game. They end up taking 28 penalty minutes, to 4 by Montreal. They still managed 38 shots!! Montreal takes the game 4-1, but Boston did great despite spending all game shorthanded. Game two sees Montreal take 26 minutes in penalties, compared to 12 from Boston. This game would need overtime though, and Boston would tie the series with a goal from Tod Sloan, on the power play. Through 2 games, Boston is 1/11, while Montreal is 2/12 on the PP. Special teams will decide the series.

Bruins and Habs during game 2.

Game three in Boston is pretty much penalty free, which makes sense, after my last statement! The Bruins jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Doug Harvey scores on the PP. Montreal is able to tie the game in the 2nd, but the Bruins again took the lead on a Marcel Pronovost goal. That lead stood, as the Bruins win it 3-2. Game 4 features another one sided penalty box. The Bruins spend 26 mins in the box, leading to 49 Montreal shots. The Habs can’t get a PP goal, but spend 25 less minutes in the box for them to attack, and they edge it out 2-1.

Pronovost scores the game three winner!

The way I see it, Montreal seems to only win, and barely, when they hold a huge man advantage so far. The back and forth continues. Montreal spends 29 minutes in the sin bin, while Boston gets just 5 in game five. The Bruins control the play because of it, and come out on top 4-2. Doug Harvey is having a great series, and nets first star with 2 goals and an assist.

Harvey with two goals in game 5!

Game 6 is Boston’s turn to take penalties, and they get 29 minutes, but they still jump out to the 1-0 lead on a Tod Sloan goal. Dean Prentice makes it 2-0, which stands until Ted Lindsay cuts the lead to one with just 80 seconds remaining. Montreal cannot tie it, and the Bruins win 2-1. Boston wins their 2nd Stanley Cup!

1956 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Here are the top 10 scorers from the regular season.

Here are the top 10 playoff scorers.

Jean Beliveau ends Gordie Howe's 5 years run of Hart Trophys! Gordie’s injury had something to do with that, but you can’t be the MVP if you aren’t playing!

Two New York Rangers retired in the offseason and the team has decided to retire both of their numbers. Butch Bouchard spent his whole career in NY, playing 958 games on the blueline. He was a very good player when the Rangers were good, and played a key role in their cup run. Bill Quackenbush was Bouchard’s d partner for his entire career. A more offensive player, Quackenbush also spent his entire career in NY, and played a big role in their titles. It’s kinda appropriate these two go out together!

There was no news story about it, but I looked, as I suspected it was coming. 38 year old Milt Schmidt has retired. Milt retires as the all time leader in games played with 1013, and points, with 977. The game as chosen not to retire his number. I will honour him with the Maple Leafs, who he spent most of his career with, and is the franchise leader in goals, assists, and points. Here is a look at his career.

Thumbnail

Before the draft, the Leafs and the Wings come together on a GOALIE TRADE!!

Toronto decides Terry Sawchuk is their man, and deal Gump Worsley to the Red Wings, who now have another 2 man goalie tandem in Worsley and Johnny Bower. Toronto gets a first round pick, which is 4th in the draft. Pretty smart deal for the Leafs. Worsley is really good, so it’s not bad for Detroit, just maybe unnecessary.

Worsley to Detroit.

With the first pick, Toronto hits the jackpot, getting Frank Mahovlich. He’s a superstar in waiting if things go well. They also use the Detroit pick to draft Carl Brewer, who is already good enough defensively to play on this team. Here are the draft results and a look at The Big M

Top Player

According to my highly scientific rating process, Pierre Pilote is the best player in hockey. He edges out teammate Gordie Howe and Jean Beliveau. Pilote has always been good, but I'm surprised he developed into a superstar.

Top Goalie

Glenn Hall is the top goalie in hockey. He edges out Terry Sawchuk by a single point. Sawchuk has 1 point over Jacques Plante. All three are great!

1956-57 NHL Regular Season

35 year old Maurice Richard looks to finally be healthy. Richard hasn’t played close to a full season since 1952/53 when he got 67 games in. This year, he’s played in all 21 of the Rangers games so far. He’s only got 4 goals, but he does lead the team in scoring with 15 points. For his career, Richard now has 433 goals. 67 off the fabled 500 mark. He’s still a 4 star player, so I don’t expect him to retire anytime soon, but he needs to pick up that goal scoring pace if he’s gonna get there!

Richard edging closer to 500

Gordie Howe suffers a bad injury for the 2nd straight year. The star tore his quad, which will keep him out for 2 months. Howe had 26 points at the time of the injury on December 1st. In the 15 games following Howe’s injury, the Red Wings went 5-10. They need their star healthy. They were in first before the injury!

Howe recovering.

At new years, Toronto again sits in last place, 4 points behind the Rangers. 18 year old Frank Mahovlich is playing in the NHL, on their fourth line. He hasn’t scored in 20 games, but he is getting experience. 20 year old Henri Richard is playing with 24 year old Andy Bathgate on the teams first line, and 23 year old Ron Murphy is looking like someone who can be a 30 goal scorer soon. If the Leafs keep losing, and get the top pick, they have the youth and the talent to be a top team very soon. I believe the top pick in next year’s draft is a big name!

Henri Richard, the Pocket Rocket

Scoring is also back up to the highest pace I a decade. We are now seeing 5.25 goals per game. The last time scoring was this high was the 1947-48 season, at 5.37 gpg.

With a month to go in the season, it’s time to take a quick look at whats happening in goaltending around the league. Specifically in Detroit and Chicago. The Red Wings have given the majority of their games to Johnny Bower. Bower has started 36 games, with a 19-14-3 record, and a SP of .914, while new teammate Gump Worsley has 25 starts, but an awful SP of .890. He doesn’t look comfy at all. If Detroit turns to Worlsey in the playoffs, this game is broken. He's got great ratings, but Bower has clearly outplayed him this season.

Detroit's goaltending tandem.

In Chicago, I can’t imagine Pelletier having a shot to take the job from Glenn Hall, and he isn’t. He’s got 18 games played, and a .907 SP, which is decent. Hall though has the same SP at .907, and a losing record in his 43 games. Maybe Chicago will give Pelletier a shot in the playoffs. The guy has excelled there!

Despite having a sub par season, Hall doesn't look like he's being challenged by Pelletier for his starting spot.

Final Standings

The Leafs again get edged out by the Rangers for meaningless 5th place, and will get a chance to add another huge talent this summer.

Boston has completely figured it all out, and even though Montreal is right there with them, I think they are hands down the best team in hockey.

Jean Beliveau has to be the favourite for the Hart trophy. Without him, Chicago would be fighting the Leafs and Rangers. They just have nothing around him. Give him some teammates to play with, and he’s capable of winning this team a cup.

Maurice Richard's quest for 500 inched forward, but doesn’t look good at this point. He got 15 goals in 59 games this year, which puts him at 444 goals. He needs 56 goals. That’s three 20 goal seasons, a number he hasn’t eclipsed in 5 years. He probably has 3 or 4 years left. It will be fun, at least for me, to watch! I'm rooting for him!

Boston vs Detroit

Tim Horton scores early, and adds an assist on a shorthanded goal by Red Sullivan, as Boston takes the opener 4-2. Boston jumps out to a 4-0 lead in the second game. Eric Nesterenko gets 2 goals, as the Bruins cruise to a 6-2 win. They have held Detroit to just 34 shots in the two games.

Horton getting Boston's title defense started right!

Detroit responds on home ice by getting 5 goals on just 18 shots. Pierre Pilote and Larry Regan each get 2 assists, while Billy Dea scores twice. 5-2 Detroit wins. Game four is all Boston. They out shoot the Wings 32-12. They dominated completely. Gump Worlsey is in net for Detroit though and he stops 31 shots. The Wings manage to score 3 times on those 12 shots, and despite being outplayed, win it 3-1!

Worsley surprised with game 4 start for Detroit!

The Bruins come out in game five the same way they played game four. Dominant. Boston outshoots Detroit 25-10 in this one, but they get a different result. Tod Sloan scores twice, and Johnny Bucyk gets two helpers. Plante doesn’t allow a goal. 5-0 Bruins. Detroit records their highest shot total of the series in game six. 20! They hold a 2-1 lead into the third, but Eric Nesterenko gets his 5th to tie it up, and with 2:34 remaining, Vic Stasiuk scores shorthanded, which is the series winning goal! Boston wins 3-2 and takes the series in 6 games.

Montreal vs Chicago

A late goal by Jean Beliveau forces overtime in the opening game of the series. OT didn’t last long. 38 seconds into the extra frame, Warren Godfrey wins it for Montreal 4-3! Jean Beliveau again scores in the third to tie the game for the Blackhawks. This time though, Montreal is able to break that deadlock before overtime on a Ted Lindsay power play goal. 3-2 Habs win to grab a 2-0 series lead.

Jean Beliveau is scoring, but it's not enough for Chicago.

Bob Pulford gets 2 first period assists, as Montreal scores 3 early goals, but Chicago is able to score twice in 40 seconds to get themselves right back in it. That was the only offense Chicago was able to muster though, as Montreal out shot them in the final two periods 22-6. Habs win 4-2. Chicago came out empty trying to avoid the sweep, and this was never a game. Ted Lindsay has 4 points. Chicago manages just 8 shots. They get crushed, and eliminated, with a 7-0 loss!

This is a rematch of last year's Cup final, won by Boston. Sugar Jim Henry is back in net for Montreal, and while he is a better goaltender then Gordie Henry, he will have to be great to beat his former team. The Bruins have the most complete team in the league. Yes, Montreal scores more, and has 3 Norris trophys on their blue line, but i would take Boston's group man for man over the Habs. Montreal is still really really talented, i just am enamored with Boston's blue line. Speaking of which, Tim Horton is questionable for the series, with an elbow injury.

Johnny Bucyk and Red Sullivan score 59 seconds apart late in the first to give Boston the early advantage in game one. Montreal works their way back, and ties it at the 15 minute mark of the final frame on a goal by Bob Pulford, but 68 seconds later, Ed Litzenberger gives the Bruins the lead back to keep. 3-2 Boston takes game one. Game two sees Montreal pepper Jacques Plante with 39 shots. Plante does great, stopping 37 of them, but Jim Henry stops all 19 shots he sees, as Montreal ties the series with a 2-0 win.

Jim Henry out-duels Jacques Plante in game 2!

Tied at one in the third, Doug Harvey breaks the tie with his first goal of the playoffs. Plante stops 35 shots, and the Bruins win it 2-1. Ted Lindsay and Nick Mickoski get Montreal a 2-0 lead in game four, and the Bruins can’t score until the 10 minute mark of the final frame. They can’t muster another one, and Montreal ties the series with a 2-1 win. It’s an extremely close and low scoring series.

Plante is having a wonderful series, stopping almost everything!

As soon as I make a statement, the flood gates open. Tied at 2 in the third, Boston explodes for 4 goals. 2 by Kenny Wharram, to cruise to a 6-2 win, putting them a single win from repeating. Montreal comes out facing elimination scoring two early goals to take the lead. The Bruins crawl back, and tie it with a Boom Boom Geoffrion goal halfway through the third. For the first time in the series, we need overtime. 9 mins into the 4th period, Tod Sloan takes a shot which is stopped, but Jean Guy Talbot, a 24 year old, who has never scored an NHL goal before, taps in the rebound, to win the game, and the Stanley Cup!!

Jean Guy Talbot, 324 minor league games, 32 NHL games. 1 NHL goal, which wins the Stanley cup! Probably the least likely guy to score an overtime clincher, but that's hockey! Talbot actually has 20 AHL goals in his career, so it's not his first professional goal.

Jean-Guy Talbot

Here are the regular season scoring leaders

Here are the playoff scoring leaders

Jean Beliveau repeats as Hart Trophy winner, no surprised there. Jacques Plane repeats, he had a great season. Montreal again takes the Norris trophy home. They are the only team to have a defensman win that award so far.

No Hall of Fame inductee's, number retiree's or important trades go down.

With the first pick in this years draft, the Maple Leafs grab Bobby Hull. Hull joins a talented young group, that could be great if they develop and stay together. Here’s a look at Hull and the rest of the draft. Of note, the Rangers get a potential goalie they can rely on, and the Blackhawks get a steal at 9 taking Chico Maki!

The Blackhawks changed their logo, and the Bruins added some stripes to their jerseys.
