In my MLB setup league.. here is where the AI does a GREAT job.
The Dodgers in the off season (2016) signed 1B Mike Napoli to a $25 MIL/2 year deal - then a couple weeks later, they traded 1B Adrian Gonzalez to the Brewers for some RP help. 1B Lind became a FA and went to LAA, so the Brewers filled their 1B gap and the Dodgers off loaded a 1B they would no longer need. So there are also many times where the AI does show its progression over the years. |

No AI is perfect but it is getting better.
Besides, it shouldn't be perfect. People aren't perfect. Real teams do really stupid things all the time (like maybe signing Hanley Ramirez to play left field...)

Transaction AI
I think this problem comes down to catchers being overvalued somehow in the game. I have not seen the problem of AI signing 2 or more players at the same position (especially in the same offseason) but I did notice the AI spending more money than usual on the catcher position even when they already have a legit starter there.
I think aging may be the culprit here also as I notice that the older catcher are being replaced with younger catchers (or catchers that haven't been hit with aging yet) So I would study this case more before making changes like dumbing down the AI to only approaching one player per position. The behavior from the original post is incorrect. Matt Arnold already identified it as a bug.

Mariners trading for Erik Bedard. Tigers trading Doug Fister. A lot of bad trades that would trigger a AI is broken threads if it happened in OOTP. That said, the OP was a bug, and I'm glad it's getting fixed. |
