NHL 1978-79 - Minnesota/Cleveland Merger
In my 1978-79 season, Minnesota is listed in the Adams beside Cleveland when they were actually MERGED with Cleveland. There was effectively a contraction to one less team that season.
Possibly as a result of the extra team in the Adams division, there were 88 games played by each team in the Adams instead of 80. The rest of the league played the correct 80 games. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Barons_(NHL) |

As a result of not merging / folding Cleveland, they actually appear in the league every year afterwards.
So when 1980 comes along, they are there in the Adams. Six teams in the Adams. As a result every team in the Norris division is playing 90 games, and everyone in the Adams is playing 86. In the other conference it is not an issue, all teams playing their 80 games. |

Allowing a team to move to Cleveland was about the dumbest thing the NHL has ever done(except for awarding a team one point for losing in OT/Shootout).
