10/15/1985 - NLCS Game 6
Don Mattingly and Terry Pendleton each drove in 2 runs and Mike Moore pitched 8 strong innings allowing 3 runs as the Expos won 5-3. Steve Bedrosian picked up his 3rd save of the series with a scoreless ninth and lowered his postseason ERA to 16.20. The winner take all Game 7 will be tomorrow, and we'll see if our comeback was all for nothing, or the Expos can advance to our first World Series. |

10/16/1985 - NLCS Game 7
The Reds struck first with 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth off Tom Browning. Dick Schofield singled home a run in the top of the 5th, but the Expos stranded 2 when Steve Sax flied out to end the inning. Browning pitched well until the bottom of the eighth when he allowed 2 more runs. That was too much for the Expos as we went down 4-1 and the Reds advanced to the World Series. Year 8 ends in disappointment for the Expos, like the previous 7 years. |

The Expos head into the Amateur Draft with some decisions. Our first move was to decline Garry Templeton's player option.
Our second task was to try and lock up Marty Bystrom to an extension. Our third item was to try and bring back pitching coach Carl Boles. We didn't get the second and third items done before the amateur draft. The Expos first pick came in the second round with the 19th pick of the second round. Catcher Ed Hearn was our pick. Reliever Dale Mohorcic was our third round pick. We selected another reliever, Mitch Williams in the fourth round, and 1B Pat Dodson our fifth round pick, and our final player selected. We'll be preparing for a record ninth season in Montreal. Let's hope they aren't the first team requiring double digit years. Montreal Expos - 57-105 (.352) 31 GB 1978 - Montreal Expos 57-105 (.352) 31 GB (Season Score - 1) 1979 - Montreal Expos 83-79 (.512) 11 GB (Season Score - 43) 1980 - Montreal Expos 82-80 (.506) 14 GB (Season Score - 22) 1981 - Montreal Expos 77-85 (.475) 15 GB (Season Score - 9) 1982 - Montreal Expos 78-84 (.481) 21 GB (Season Score - 1) 1983 - Montreal Expos 83-79 (.512) 12 GB (Season Score - 28) 1984 - Montreal Expos 84-78 (.519) 11 GB (Season Score - 32) 1985 - Montreal Expos 88-74 (.543) - GB (Lost to the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in LCS, Season Score - 67) |

Does it disappoint you that you cannot move on to another team, or are you happy to come back and try to get over the hump? Were you studying the standings to see who your next team would be and what they have? |

For the second part of your question I really try to avoid looking at the bottom of the standings and thinking about who is next. I've gotten in trouble in the past playing what if. |

12/3/1985 - Offseason Update
We signed Marty Bystrom to a 4 year extension, and brought aboard Billy Shantz as our new pitching coach. We weren't able to agree with our previous coach Carl Boles though, which was disappointing.
We'll be shopping this offseason for a catcher, shortstop, and outfield bat. |

Hopefully our offseason puts us over the edge, and I have a feeling it will one way or another. I'm hoping that my spending splurge doesn't force us into rebuilding.
SS Alfredo Griffin was our first signing, giving him $4,500,000 over 5 years. C Terry Kennedy was next with a 5 year $4,750,000 contract. Then last RF Lonnie Smith signed a 2 year $1,200,000 contract. It look at their stats last year: Smith - .285/.376/.387, 7 HR, 80 RBI, 30 SB Griffin - .305/.342/.415, 6 HR, 75 RBI, 39 SB Kennedy - .267/.311/.416, 19 HR, 65 RBI |

Our owner expects us to reach the playoffs this year, as do I. Unfortunately we've gotten off to a slow start going 8-10.
We haven't played that bad though, so I think we'll come around. We'll see what May brings before making any decisions though. |

The Expos finished our second straight losing month, and currently sit in fourth place. Our offense isn't playing as well as I would like, and our bullpen is struggling as well.
Jon Matlock now has 284 wins for his career, so at least there is one interesting thing going on with the Expos. |

The Expos went 16-11 for the month and pulled within 3 1/2 games of the first place Pirates.
We did lose both of our catchers, Terry Kennedy and Gary Carter to injury, along with Steve Sax. Jon Matlock went 3-1 with a 1.19 ERA this month in 6 starts to capture the NL Pitcher of the Month. Matlock now has 287 career wins. He's looking to join Ray Sadecki (340), Dean Chance (323), and Don Drysdale (311) as the only 300 game winners since the reboot. |

No better options than Schofield and Griffin?
You need your bats to come alive. I have faith in Ed Hearn. lol

Depth is not my strength with the Expos! Something needs to happen with out bats. At least my pitching and defense is holding up somewhat, and I hope we can survive with Ed Hearn and Dick Scheduled until Sax and a catcher come back. I'm actually starting to believe that either Ken Griffey or Rickey Henderson cursed the Expos when I traded them, I just don't know who yet.

The Expos struggled in July going 13-14 and now are in 3rd place, trailing the Cardinals by 3 games, and the Pirates by 6 games.
We'll be without Cecilio Guante for the next year after he went 0-3 with 13 saves and a 2.39 ERA. We may have to part ways in the offseason, since he can't stay healthy. The Expos sent Jon Matlock, Don Mattingly, and George Bell to the All-Star Game. |

The Expos returned to winning going 16-14 this month, but it wasn't enough to close the gap with either the Cardinals or the Pirates.
Injuries continue to strike the Expos, as we lost both George Bell and Dan Pasqua. |

Another year, another disappointing finish for the Expos. We finished the year with an 82-80 record in fourth place.
Jon Matlock was 5-0 with a 1.66 ERA in September to win the Pitcher of the Month. He now has 297 career wins. The Expos are now officially my worst team, and I don't even know if we are heading in the right direction. I feel like I've lost my way. 11/1/1986 - Amateur Draft
The Expos were drafting 14th in the amateur draft, and with our top pick selecting SP Tom Glavine. We didn't draft again until the fourth round, and selected reliever John Davis. Reliever Logan Easley was our final draft pick.
I made the decision to decline arbitration for Frank DiPino, Cecilio Guante, Steve Simpson, and Reid Nichols. Jon Matlock was named the National League Cy Young Award winner after his 18-7 season with a 1.74 ERA. |

The reshuffling begins as the Expos dealt SP Marty Bystrom and SS Alfredo Griffin to the Royals in exchange for C Lance Parrish.
This was a two part deal though as Lance Parrish didn't stick around long, going with Joe Cowley, Dick Schofield, Bob Kipper, and Wayne Tolleson to the Rangers in exchange for C Bob Brenly, SS Dale Sveum, and RF Dion James. Since Gary Carter will be departing as a free agent Brenly will fill our need for a catcher, Sveum will be our new shortstop, and James our right fielder. We also have the added bonus of saving $1 million on the two deals. Also departing is Don Aase, Steve Bedrosian, Steve Sax, and Dave Henderson. |

The Expos sent SP Neal Heaton and MR Mark Clear to the Giants in exchange for 2B Marty Barrett, and relievers Andy Replogle and Rich Bordi.
We also dipped into the free agent well one more time, signing CF Mookie Wilson to a 4 year $4,100,000 contract. For the most part this will be the team we enter the year with, for better or worse. |

4/6/1987 - Opening Day
Season 10 begins with the Expos today, on the road against the Reds. Through a series of bad moves, bad luck, impatience, and who knows what else, the Expos become the first team to have to go 10 seasons. I'm hoping that we can get off to a good start, stay productive all season, and return to the postseason.
We made one addition right before the start of Spring Training. We needed a utility infielder, and in this world Ozzie Smith fit the bill. The Wizard of Oz signed a 1 year $243,800 contract to flash the leather. Smith hit .207 last year in a similar role for the Pirates. With 297 career wins, Jon Matlock got his first crack at win number 298 today. Through no fault of his own, Matlock left the game after 8 innings with a no decision after allowing two runs. The Expos would go on to lose Opening Day 3-2 in 12 innings. |

4/15/1987 - Matlock wins 298th of career
Since he's so close I figured I would be following Jon Matock's starts until he gets to 300 wins. Today Matlock go the start against the Cardinals, and he pitched 8 strong innings, allowing 3 earned runs to pick up the W. Matlock struck out 5 while walking nobody.
His win allowed the Expos to remain in a first place tie with a 4-2 record, tied with the Pirates, Mets, and Cubs. |
